Biology

Paper 2
Time 2 hrs

Instructions: This paper consist two sections, A & B. Section A

has TWO questions and section B TWO questions. You are
expected to answer all FOUR questions.

Question # 1

Catalase is an enzyme that is found in the tissues of living

organisms. This enzyme protects body tissues by breaking down
hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) which is toxic; into water (H2O) and
oxygen gas (O2) so that body tissues are not damaged.

Note: whenever a gas is produce in a reaction, bubbles are

usually seen.

A student carried out an experiment using pieces of rat liver to

investigate the activity of catalase under different conditions.
The student placed the rat liver in hydrogen peroxide under
different conditions.

Observe the students results in the table below and answer the
questions which follow.

Liver in H2O2 + Boiled liver in Crushed liver Whole liver in

Based on the results, give a reason no bubbles were seen for liver
placed in hydrochloric acid.
