It is amazing how kids have been bitten by the digital bug. It is estimated that
millions of young children are Internet users. Young kids, some as young as three years
old are logging on. These are three-year-olds who have been watching their older
siblings logging on and want to log on as well.
Young children from pre-school to teens are forsaking their Ferrari model cars,
Beanie Babies and Barbie Dolls and logging on to child-friendly sites such as Wekinz
Club, Club Penguin and Stardoll which are virtual communities inhabited by pets and
cartoon characters with whom they interact. These are different from computer games
that come with equally fanciful names such as Everquest and StarCraft. The children sign
in and create their own characters, dress and house them and buy them clothes, toys and
others with virtual or real currency. They can play games with the characters and those
created by their real friends who may be playing at the same time on their computers.
They can enter each other’s virtual rooms. When they win games and do virtual chores
such as feeding their pets and clothing their characters, they win points and convert it to
buy even more stuff. Like adults and teens on Facebook or Myspace, they can compose
their own web page and send cards and messages to friends.
The question to ask is, where this new cyberware is taking us. Too much screen
time is no good for kids but how do they reduce it? Parents, in particular have a lot to
worry about. It is addictive and it is a passive activity. There could be hidden costs as
well, because many sites are linked to advertisers who want to do business. Therefore,
parents need to get a grip on this new craze. They had better be aware of what their
young kids are going in for.
