As in English language, the German language has also modal verbs. We use “can, may, must, shall,”
to express different situations. In German language such modal verbs are also used.
They are:
können = to express possibility or capability (can)
Kann ich zehn Euro wechseln? (Can I change 10 Euro?)
Können Sie mir helfen? (Can you help me?)
Ich kann gut schwimmen, (I can swim well.)
wollen = to express an intention
Ich will heute ins Kino gehen. ( I intend to go to a film)
Sie will mich zu ihrer Hochzeit einladen.
(She intends to invite me to her marriage.)
möchte = to express a wish
Ich möchte eine Tasse Kaffee trinken. ( I have a wish
to drink a cup of coffee.)
Am Sonntag möchte er einen Ausflug mit seiner Frau
machen. (On Sunday he has a wish to make an
excursion with his wife.)
mögen = to like
Ich mag Fisch (I like fish)
Er mag kein Fleisch (He does not like meat.)
müssen = to express one’s own decision strongly
Er muß zum Arzt gehen. (He must go to the doctor.)
Sie muß Deutsch üben. (She must practise German)
sollen = to express a demand or an offer
Soll ich Sie begleiten? (Shall I accompany you?
Soll ich meinen Schirm mitnehmen?
(Shall I take my umbrella with me?)
dürfen = to ask for permission (may)
Darf ich hier mein Auto parken?
(May I park my car hier)
Ist der Platz frei? Darf ich hier sitzen?
(Is the place free? May I sit here?)
Frau Lakshmi Goel bleibt immer zu Hause. Sie muß immer die Hausarbeit
machen. Ihr Mann ist Lehrer in der Universität. Die Kinder gehen zur Schule.
Aber Frau Goel will nicht immer allein zu Hause sein. Sie möchte wieder als
Verkäuferin arbeiten. Zur Zeit sucht „das Kaufhaus MORE“ Verkäuferin.
Deshalb möchte Frau Goel dort mal fragen. Frau Goel kann English und Indisch
sprechen. Aber sie kann nicht Tamul gut sprechen. Und sie hat noch einen
Wunsch: sie möchte nur halbtags arbeiten.
You may see that the conjugated modal verb “muss” is in 2 nd place of the sentence
and the main verb remains at last place in infinitive. This is the word order for
affirmative sentences. In question form the conjugated modal verb goes to 1 st position
and the main verb is in last place as in affirmative sentence.
Sie dürfen das Auto hier um die Ecke parken. Die Kinder dürfen nicht hier spielen
In der Oper darf man nicht laut sprechen. In den Zügen darf man keinen Alkohol
trinken. Darf man nicht auf die Straßen spucken.
