Davis, Mark. “The Longleaf Industry Branches Out.” Atlanta Journal Constitution. Atlanta

Journal Constitution, 22 January 2010. Web. 14 March 2011.

Mark Davis in the article, “The Longleaf Industry Branches Out,” explains that several

organizations are trying to increase the amount of longleaf pine trees bot in Georgia and the

entire nation. Davis supports his explanation by listing both federal and state organization’s plans

for the future, along with their previous actions, concerning the longleaf pine. The author’s

purpose is to show people that a tree that was once nearly extinct is now back on the rise so that

they see the importance of the longleaf pine’s role in nature. The author writes in a positive tone

that looks towards the future for concerned Georgians.

The article is relevant because it is aimed towards college level or older people, and discusses

advancements in the number of longleaf pine trees; it is a secondary source. The article is from a

large newspaper company and the information is aligned with my previous research which leads

me to believe that it is credible. This source presents enough evidence, and gives a fair counter

argument that although they are at a low, the longleaf pines are on a rise. This article is timely

because it’s only a year old.

This article describes the America’s Longleaf Initiative, which was founded in 2005. They were

founded in order to conserve and sustain the longleaf pine, and its surrounding environment. The

article explains the ways support has been raised, and many organizations have been formed

around the initiative. The purpose is to explain the purpose and history of America’s Longleaf

Initiative and hopefully gain support for a visitor to the website. The tone is explanatory for an

audience with little to no knowledge of the issue at hand.

The article is relevant because it explains the longleaf pine forest problems, and how it’s being

solved; it is a secondary source, and is aimed at mature, environmentally concerned individuals.

The writing is credible because it is representing a nation wide organization and the content

aligns with previous sources that I’ve read. The article makes dew assertions with much

evidence and is well balanced, with slight bias. The article is timely because it was made within

the last 2 years.

“Longleaf Pine Forests.” Southern Environmental Law Center. Southern Environmental Law

Center, 14 July 2010. Web. 14 March 2011.

In this article, the efforts to revive and restore the amount of longleaf pines is addressed. It is

done so by presenting a plan contributed to by professionals. The article also calls for National

recognition of the longleaf pine issue. It overall, addresses how and how much is going into the

longleaf pine recovery.

This article is relevant because it is secondary and is aimed for an older audience, and addresses

how the issues of the longleaf pine will be resolved. The source is credible because Southern

Environmental Law Center is a well known source with generally accurate details, and the

information matches my other research. The coverage is balanced because it gives a before and

after view, and doest make the information narrow. The article is timely because it is under a year

old.

Martin, Laura C. “Longleaf Beauties Support a Diverse Ecosystem.” Georgian Magazine.

GEMC, September 2007. Web. 14 March 2011.

Martin in the article, “Longleaf Beauties Support a Diverse Ecosystem,” asserts that the longleaf

pine trees support a very diverse ecosystem that rely on the trees. Martin supports her assertion

by listing different types of animals and plants that depend on the longleaf pine. The author’s

purpose is to show the importance of the trees which are quickly reducing in amount so that

people may take action. The author writes in a concerned tone for an audience equally as

concerned for the faith of the longleaf pine forests.

The article is relevant because this secondary source is for a mature audience and addresses the

importance of the longleaf pine forest in ecosystems. The author is credible because she is

writing for a magazine which carries the name of the state of Georgia and she is a specialist on

the longleaf and has written 26 nature-related books. The coverage is balanced because it looks at

a wide variety of impacts the longleaf pine has on nature. The article is timely because it was

written under three years ago.

Ray, Janisse. Ecology of a Cracker Childhood. Minneapolis, Minnesota: Milkweed Editions,

1999. Print.

In the book Ecology of a Cracker Childhood Janisse Ray explains the important role of the

longleaf pine in the rest of nature. Ray supports her explanation by giving examples of specific

parts of the ecosystem that depend specifically on the long leaf pine. The author’s purpose is to

show how important the longleaf pin is so that people learn to embrace and respect it. The author

writes in a reminiscent tone for those who haven’t seen what she has.

The book is appropriate because it is about longleaf pine trees in georgia, and is aimed at young

adults. The author is credible because she is specialized in science and has seen the downfall of

the longleaf firsthand. The author is slightly biased but shows both the good and bad of the

longleaf pine. The book is not very recent but it gives ground and history for what is going on

today.
