HP Laserjet IIIP printer control panel


NOTE: Procedures for using printer control panels are similar from one HP LaserJet
printer model to another.

Control panel layout


To access the function listed on the top of a control panel key, momentarily press and
then release the key. To access the function listed on the bottom of a key, hold down the
ALT key, then press the desired key. For example, to reset the printer hold down the
ALT key and press RESET.
ON LINE Press ONLINE to place the printer online and offline. The printer is
online and ready to receive data when the online indicator is lit. To use
Reset any of the other keys on the control panel, the printer must be offline.

Hold down ALT and press RESET to reset the printer and return all
Printing Menu settings to their control panel defaults. Resetting the
printer also deletes temporary soft fonts, macros, and the print buffer.
MENU Press MENU to access the Printing Menu and the Configuration Menu.

Print Hold down ALT and press PRINT FONTS to print one or more pages of
Fonts sample text showing all of the currently available fonts. See Font
Printouts.
ENTER Press ENTER to save the currently displayed choice while in the Printing
Menu or Configuration Menu.
Test
Hold down ALT and press TEST to print a PCL self-test and Cleaning
Paper.
FORM Press FORM FEED to print any data remaining in the print buffer
FEED (indicated by an illuminated form feed light). The FORM FEED key is
disabled when the PostScript (R) language is running.
Continue
Hold down ALT and press CONTINUE to clear an error message and
return the printer to online status.
ALT Hold down ALT to access the functions listed on the bottom of the other
control panel keys.
+ Press + to scroll or step forward through menu item choices.

- Hold down ALT and press - (minus) to scroll or step backwards through
menu item choices.
Control panel menus
Use the information that follows to change HP LaserJet IIIP printer menu settings.

1. Press ON LINE to take the printer offline.


2. Press MENU repeatedly until the setting you want to change appears. To access
the Configuration Menu, press MENU repeatedly until DEVICE CONFIG
appears, then press ENTER.
3. Press + or - to select the desired setting.
4. Press ENTER to save selections. An asterisk (*) will appear to the right of the
setting.
5. To make another selection, return to step 2. To exit the menu, press ON LINE.

Printing menu items


MP SIZE = LETTER*, LEGAL, A4, EXEC, COM10, MONARCH, C5, or DL

This is for the size of media loaded in the MP tray; menu item does
not appear when TRAYS LC ONLY is selected.
COPIES = 1* to 99

Default number of copies


FONT SRC = I*, C, or S

PCL default font source: Internal, Cartridge, or Soft


FONT NUM 0* to 999

PCL default font number
PT. SIZE = PCL default point size for scalable typefaces
PITCH = PCL default pitch (cpi) for scalable typefaces
TRAYS = Both, LC TRAY, MP TRAY, or LC ONLY

Default input tray; menu item appears only when an optional Lower
Cassette is installed.
JOB SIZE = LETTER*, LEGAL, A4, EXEC, COM10, MONARCH, C5, or DL

PCL default print image size; should match the size of media being
used.
ORIENT = P* or L

PCL default print orientation: Portrait or Landscape

Printer interface selection; OPTIONAL appears only when an


optional interface is installed.
BAUDRATE = 300 . . . 9600* . . . 19200

Data transfer rate for serial communication.


ROBUST XON = OFF or ON*

XON signal frequency for serial communication: OFF for once,


ON for once every second.
DTR POLAR = HI* or LO

Data terminal ready signal polarity for serial communication


STARTPAGE = OFF* or ON

PostScript startup page


LANGUAGE = ENG*

Appears when using PostScript.


REt = DARK, MEDIUM*, LIGHT, or OFF

Resolution Enhancement Technology adjustment
