PLAYING WITH WORDS: Summer Creative

Writing Day Camp (organized in conjunction with
the Aegean Arts Circle)
A program for students in grades 8 – 10.
July 5 – July 8, 2011 (9:00 – 12:30 daily; individual conferences
1:00 – 3:00, by appointment)

Come with an open mind, paper and pen. We will do what the course title says:
play with words. No grades. No judgments. Supportive small group will be
comprised of students who like to write and who will provide feedback on all
writing done in the workshop. Who knows, some of the topics we will touch on
might give you ideas for college application essays and themes for projects you
might want to tackle on your own.

Playing with words is designed to get you thinking outside the box. We will have
four days to play with our own writing – that could mean that we start off with a
simple writing exercise or a journal entry or a description of a photograph and
end up with a wildly interesting short story, the beginnings of a novel or an
outline for a screenplay – the possibilities are endless.

Instructor Amalia Melis is creator and organizer of the Aegean Arts Circle
Creative Writing Workshops. Her short story “Immigrant Daughter” won second
place for new writers in Glimmer Train in 2006. Two other stories were named as
finalists in the 2005 and 2007 Glimmer Train awards competition. She has
finished writing her first novel and is currently working on a second. She is a
freelance feature writer and, when avoiding the blank page, she makes
wire/metal sculptures out of found items.

Minimum of 5 students required for course to run. Maximum number of

students who can be enrolled: 15.

ALGEBRA II AND TRIGONEMETRY

A course for students entering grades 10-12
June 22– July 22, 2011 (10:00 – 1:00 daily)
WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS JULY 4TH.

The summer Algebra and Trigonometry class has been designed for the
following students:
o Students who failed the Algebra Trigonometry class and wish to
retake it again Students who wish to refresh or enhance their
Algebra skills in preparation for the next academic year.
o Students who want to better prepare for the SAT exams
o Incoming students who wish to be exposed to the ACS Algebra
curriculum in preparation for their first year at ACS Athens

Students who successfully complete the course (including receiving a

satisfactory grade on the final assessment will receive .5 elective credits,
which will be applied towards meeting ACS Athens graduation
requirements.
This course contains both content that reviews or extends concepts and
skills learned in previous grades and new, more abstract concepts in
algebra. Students will gain proficiency in solving linear and quadratic
inequalities, systems of linear equations, quadratic equations,
investigating polynomials and rational expressions and a thorough
introduction to Trigonometry. Students will also investigate exponential
and logarithmic functions.

Students will be actively engaged using concrete and virtual materials and
appropriate technologies such as graphing calculators and computer
software. Students will also identify and apply real-life applications of the
mathematical principles they are learning to science and other disciplines
they are studying.

Mathematics has its own language, and the acquisition of specialized

vocabulary and language patterns is crucial to a student's understanding
and appreciation of the subject. Students are encouraged to use correctly
the concepts, skills, symbols, and vocabulary identified in the course.

Problem solving is integrated throughout the different components of the

curriculum. The development of problem-solving skills is a major goal of
the mathematics program at ACS. Instruction in the process of problem
solving will help students develop a wide range of skills and strategies for
solving a variety of problem types.

Course 5
SCULPTING FOR CREATURE DESIGN
AND ANIMATION PUPPETS – CREATING
FOR THE MOVIES
Open to students entering grades 10 - 12
June 22 – July 8, 2011 (10:00 – 1:00 daily)
WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS ON JULY 4TH

A hands-on sculpting course dealing with creature design and puppet

making for stop- motion animation.
A scaled character in clay is still the easiest and most direct way to create
and express a character design. In this “digital era” expressing a
concept/design as a physical object, during and after its completion, has
never been more pertinent. Sculptures are very often scanned in 3D to
make virtual models for SFX and video games. Creature design has never
been more popular. Stop-motion animation is the easiest way to bring an
inanimate object to life without strings and has seen enormous growth in
popularity in the past 10 years, both in the amateur arena and the high-end
professional one.

Students taking this class will have the chance to create a character
design/puppet from scratch using clay and learn the same methods a
professional in the entertainment industry would use. Real examples from
the workplace will be lectured about throughout the 12 day period. These
examples will help keep the students engaged and motivated to work on
getting an intensive hands-on experience and a real feel for the process
during the course.

Students will first design a character in 2D and then translate it into a real
model(3D). They will be also be encouraged and shown how to make their
own tools.

Use of the computer will be suggested only for the purposes of aiding in
the research & development of the character design via finding images on
the Internet of textures, animals, art and other examples of creature design
and puppet sculpting.
The finished result will be something every student can take home with
him/her to use as point of reference if they wish to explore the field further.
If students choose to work on an exceptionally ambitious project, they can
continue to work on it after the class is over using the methods/techniques
learned and eventually add it to their portfolios.

After working for 10 years on Film and TV productions in Montreal as a

model-maker/sculptor/designer, instructor Dimitri Kaliviotis has recently
relocated to Athens, Greece. He graduated from ACS Athens in 1995 and
went on to get a degree in design/art at Concordia University in Montreal.
He has also given lectures on building and sculpting techniques
concerning for stop-motion animation for university students.

Minimum enrollment: 5 students. Maximum enrollment: 15 students

Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 Arts credits in

fulfillment of ACS Athens graduation requirements.
