pianist who left the Soviet Union.
She will execute a variety of

On May 1st, the Julliard String
Quartet will make its first appear-
ance tin Erie. According to Sam
Rotman, the ^director of the
D'Angelo School of Music, "it took
three months of negotiations to get
them into the Mercyhurst College
series." The Quartet has made over
150 recordings on the CBS Master-
works label.
The outstanding element of the
series is the cost. Unfortunately,

according to Rotman, "the
President's Card does not cover
the cost of these events." Fortu-
nately, a ticket for every event in
the series, five outstanding con-
certs, is only $10. An individual
ticket for an event, if available, is
$5, and can be purchased the day

Biden's Plagiarism Raises Question of Cheating O n

he cheated on a law school
paper, but cheating re-
mains widespread on
American campuses today,
various sources say.

all college students say
they've cheated during
their academic careers, re-

offenses - from the 1985-
86 to the 1986-87 school

At Duke, accusations of
cheating increase when
individual professors take
steps to curb academic
dishonesty, said Dean of
Student Life Sue Wasiolek.
Twenty-three students
were chargedtwith cheat-
ing during the 1986-87
academic year, she said; 14
were charged the previous
year and 12 were accused
of cheating during 1984-
85. |j
The increase is not due to
a campus-wide, organized
crackdown, Wasiolek said,
but', because individual
faculty^ 'members have
become more aware of the
problem.
On Sep. 17, Biden - a
candidate for the Demo-
cratic presidential nomi-
nation - admitted that he'd
turned in a paper as a first
year law student at
Syracuse University in
1965 that included 5 pages
lifted directly from *a
published law review ar-
ticle.
Biden also misrepre-
sented his academic rec-
ord during a recent cam-
paign appearance, accord-
ing to Newsweek. Biden
reportedly said he gradu-
ated in the top half of his
law school class, but actu-
ally finished 76th in a
class of 85. Biden report-
edly also said he attended

school to let him take the

"I did something very
stupid 23 years ago,"

review board may show
mercy to an undergradu-
ate for Biden's offense,
but, for law school stu-
dents, "ignorance is not an
acceptable defense. Law
