1.0 Introduction
Many commonly used sequestering agents such as NTA, EDTA and phosphorus derivatives
are becoming increasingly undesirable in industrial formulations due to safety and
environmental issues. NTA is non-biodegradable and difficult to handle. EDTA is a
suspected carcinogen and banned from use in certain countries eg Germany. The use of
phosphates and phosphonates is also of concern due to their accumulation in the
environment.

Crodaquests are a range of biodegradable sequestering agents with are readily

biodegradable, non-hazardous, easy-to-handle and EDTA-free. This report compares the
Iron and Calcium sequestration power of various Crodaquest compounds against market
products. The products evaluated were:

Crodaquest A300 (Sodium Heptonate, 87.5% active)

Crodaquest AB85 (Sodium Heptonate, 26%)
Crodaquest B95 (Sodium Heptonate, 33%)
EDTA (Disodium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 98%)
NTA (Nitrilotriacetic acid, 99%)
Sodium Hexametaphosphate solution, 18% (SH)
A combination of polyphosphonic acids, 40% (PPA)
Diethylenetriaminepentamethylene phosphonic acid, 47% (DPA)

They were tested at pH 7 upwards and at different caustic concentrations for Iron
sequestration and at different caustic concentrations for Calcium sequestration.
