684,000 hectolitres (-7%) of Bordeaux wines were exported in 2009 (i.e. 91 million bottles) with a turnover
of 697 million Euros (-22%).
Amongst non-EU countries, only the dynamic Chinese and Hong-Kong markets held up well. Doubling its
Bordeaux wine imports in 2009, China has become the #1 non-EU importing country by volume for Bor-
deaux wines.
The U.S.A., now the second non-EU importing country in terms of volume, still leads by value.

Exports of Bordeaux wines to Russia enjoyed constant growth between
2000 and 2007, with volumes tripling over 8 years. 2008 registered a marked
decline that continued in 2009, with 12,000 hectolitres exported (-35%) and a turnover of 6 million Euros (-46%).
Russia is now the 13th destination for Bordeaux wines by volume and the 22nd by value.

Top10 destinations
for Bordeaux wines in 2009
Ranked by volume
252,000 hectolitres of Bordeaux wines (-14%) were exported to Germany in 2009 with a turno-
ver of 119 million Euros (-18%). Performance versus 2008.
Although the decline observed in the early 2000s had stopped by 2005, the crisis put Bordeaux
wine shipments back on a downward trend. Nevertheless, Germany, the world’s top wine
importer, remains the largest export market by volume for Bordeaux wines. Value is lower be-
cause of the significant weight of the Bordeaux regional appellation within the mix.

2Belgium
2009 exports
Having stabilized in 2006, the situation deteriorated again in 2008 and 2009. Belgium, however, remains
a crucial market for Bordeaux wines: this country is the second largest market by volume and the 3rd by
value. Bordeaux wines maintain their leadership position in this market, with a notable 15% share of the
red wine market.
Even though Bordeaux red wines make up the large majority of shipments, Belgium has also become the
top customer for Bordeaux white wines (18% of total), ahead of the UK.

3United Kingdom
2009 Exports
Since mid-2008, due to the effects of the economic crisis, Bordeaux wine purchases by the United
Kingdom, the world’s second biggest importer of wine, have clearly declined.
The 3rd biggest customer country for Bordeaux wines by volume, the United Kingdom re-affirmed its
leadership by value in 2009. Despite the downturn, within the 80% of red wines exported, the regional
A.O.C. does not make up the bulk of sales.

4China
2009 Exports
137,000 hectolitres (+97%) were exported to China in 2009 with a turnover of Euros 74 million
(+40%). Performance versus 2008.
Exports of Bordeaux wines have steadily increased since the 2000s, when only 2,000 hectolitres were
exported. Exports have since accelerated and today stand at 137,000 hl.
China therefore became the top non-EU destination for Bordeaux wines in 2009.
Most of the growth has benefited Bordeaux red wines, which already comprise most of the shipments
(96.5%), as well as entry-level and mid-range appellations.

5 U.S.A.
2009 Exports
116,000 hectolitres of Bordeaux wines (-27%) were exported in 2009 to the U.S.A., with a
turnover of 139 millions Euros (-44%). Performance versus 2008.
Although the U.S. remains the second customer country for Bordeaux wines by value, it has dropped
one place in the rankings by volume. The level of Bordeaux shipments to this market is always very much
affected by the success of certain vintages. In addition to the economic crisis, 2009 Bordeaux wine
exports suffered from the after-effects of the influence of the 2005 vintage shipped at the end of 2007
and early 2008.

2009 Exports
116,000 hectolitres of Bordeaux wines (-18%) were exported to Japan in 2009, with a turnover
of 92 millions Euros (-28%). Performance versus 2008.
Between 1993 and 2002, Bordeaux exports generally increased, reaching their highest level in
2002 (excluding 1998, a record year related to the “French Paradox” effect).
After a slowdown period, Bordeaux wine shipments increased again from 2006 to 2008 until
the economic crisis led to a decline in 2009.

2009 Exports
69,000 hectolitres of Bordeaux wines (-9%) were exported to Canada in 2009, with a turnover
of 53 millions Euros (-21%). Performance versus 2008.
Between 2005 and 2008, Bordeaux exports to Canada generally increased. 2009 marked the
end of this trend as volumes shipped declined by -9%. A breakdown analysis of shipments
shows the increasing weight of red wines, whose sales hold up better, due to the growing
importance of the regional Bordeaux red appellation.

2009 Exports
58,000 hectolitres of Bordeaux wines (-11%) were exported to Switzerland in 2009, with a tur-
nover of 98 million Euros (-35%). Performance versus 2008.
The more marked decline in 2009 turnover was due to the weight of the 2005 vintage within
2008 Bordeaux shipments. Switzerland therefore fell back to 6th place by value in 2009.
The Médoc appellations, including the communal appellations (Listrac, Margaux, Moulis,
Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien), make up more than a third of Bordeaux exports,
ahead of the Bordeaux red A.O.C.

2009 Exports
58,000 hectolitres of Bordeaux wines (-31%) were exported in 2009 to the Netherlands, with a
turnover of 37 millions Euros (-20%). Performance versus 2008.
The period between 2004 and 2007 seemed to indicate the end of a phase of significant sales
loss from which Bordeaux wines had been suffering for about a decade. 2009 confirmed the
extent of a decline that began in 2008, putting the Netherlands in 9th place by volume and
10th by value.

2009 Exports
42,000 hectolitres of Bordeaux wines (+24%) were exported to Hong Kong in 2009, with a tur-
nover of 109 million Euros (+46%). Performance versus 2008.
In 2009, Hong Kong, along with China, was one of the rare destinations for Bordeaux wines that showed
growth. The 10th customer by volume, Hong Kong, reconfirmed its interest in top-of-the-range products,
unlike most countries. More than one bottle in five is a communal appellation (Listrac, Margaux, Moulis,
Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien), as a result of which Hong Kong has established itself as 5th
export buyer by value.
