PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Gentiva Health Services
3/2008 - 10/2009: Senior Health Specialty Director/Gentiva Health Services
Director in St. Paul, MN for one of three Gentiva sites nationwide to pilot a
nursing specialty program. Assisted the corporate team to develop, implement ,
manage, educate and train individuals for a nursing specialty that uses a true i
nterdisciplinary approach to providing homecare. Also responsible for sales and
marketing of the program garnering referrals from physicians, hospitals, nursin
g homes assisted living facilities and TCUs. This specialty has since grown fro
m three pilot sites to 15 sites nationwide with another 30 sites poised to launc
h the program in 2009.
Minnesota Department of Health, St. Paul, MN
9/2007 - 12/2007: Deputy Commissioner of Health
Appointed by the Governor to facilitate a smooth transition between appointment
s of Health Commissioners. Functions included executive leadership and manageme
nt of all operating and regulatory functions and programs of agency. Agency has
1400 employees, three metro offices and 7 districts offices and a budget of $46
9M. Also included continuation of responsibilities outlined below as Assistant C
ommissioner.
5/2003 - 9/2007: Assistant Commissioner of Health
As a member of this senior leadership team, functions included direct supervisi
on of division directors who in turn managed 225 employees. Managed an annual bu
dget of over $253M, external relations, strategic planning, policy development,
human resource planning, systems analysis, program and project management, commu
nication and media skills, conflict resolution techniques and public speaking to
a wide and diverse group of individuals and organizations. Interacted with sta
te government representatives and senators as well as private sector counterpart
s in development of public health policy and implementation of public health leg
islation.
Mercy Hospital and Health Care Center, Moose Lake, MM
11/1990 - 5/2003: Director of Education, Training and Development
Designed, developed and implemented an Education Department from the ground up.
Managed, assessed, developed, designed, facilitated and tracked all education
and training for 300 staff and management of acute care, long-term care, outpati
ent rehab, assisted living and ancillary services. Coordinated the transition of
staff to a web-based training curriculum for all required training. Developed
and taught continuing nursing education courses.
Accomplishments include:
- With the University of Minnesota, coordinated and facilitated a 12-week, commu
nity specific, interdisciplinary Rural Health Program for advanced practice heal
th care students in multiple healthcare curriculums and from multiple Minnesota
colleges
- Designed and facilitated a health careers course for local junior and senior h
igh school students. Program received state recognition
- Established facility as a certified Nursing Assistant Training Site
- Provided initial and ongoing training for staff choosing to work in the Alzhei
mer's and memory care unit
- Consult and contract with other Minnesota health care facilities for managemen
t training, staff development and continuing education courses.
- Presented at local, state and national workshops and conferences.
Superior Memorial Hospital
9/1987 - 10/1990: Education Manager
Managed, assessed, developed, designed, facilitated and tracked all staff devel
opment and continuing education for hospital staff and community including, but
not limited to, new employee orientation, CPR/ACLS training, prenatal/birthing c
lasses, state required education, new employee orientation, nursing continuing e
ducation and community outreach programs.
6/1983 - 9/1990: OB/GYN STAFF NURSE
Clinical nurse for L&D, Postpartum , Nursery and Gynecology patients. Rotate
regularly as charge nurse and unit manager. Oriented nursing staff to OB clinica
l practice, authored and produced patient education materials and developed and
taught childbirth education classes.
