It is
flammable and is fully miscible with water and with most organic solutions. Hydrogen peroxide
is a strong oxidizing agent that is slightly acidic and completely miscible with water. There is a
potential in mixing ethanol with hydrogen peroxide to increase the amount of energy as well as
reducing hazard substances produced during combustion. So this is what I am testing in the
experiment. So far I have done research for this project. From this point I need to do the
experiment and collect my data. There might be a problem with mixing all of these materials as
well as burning the substances with some assistance.
Materials:
- 1 Beakers
- 1 Tripod
- 1 Burner
- 1 Lighter
- 1 Thermometer
- 1 Gauze
- 1 Timer
- 1 pair of Goggles
- 1 pair of Gloves
Procedures:
For Trial 1:
2) Pour 75mL of water into the beaker; place a thermometer into the beaker
3) Then place the beaker on top of a tripod with the burner being placed directly under the
tripod and the beaker.
4) After all the preparations, light the sample on fire with a long wooden stick.
5) Measure the temperature of the water in the beaker every 30 seconds and record the total
time that the sample burns for.
6) After the flame dies out, then rinse and clean and prepare the apparatus for the next sample.
For Trial 2:
3) Put the container into a steel pan filled with 105mL of water and place the pan on top of a
cup.
4) Place 45mL of into a beaker on top of the sample with the use of a tripod.
5) After all the preparations, light the sample on fire with a long wooden stick.
6) Measure and record the final temperature of the water in the beaker and the pan as well as
the total time that the sample burns for.
7) After the flame dies out, then rinse and clean and prepare the apparatus for the next sample.
This experiment can take a few days to complete. On 2/19/11 I will gather all the materials and
2/26/11and 2/27/11 conduct the experiment doing trial 1 and trial 2 respectively, doing this with
the utmost care. Finish experiment and interpret data 2/28/11.
