INTRODUCTION
Throughout histor0( prophets ha!e called on their tribes to belie!e in the )ne and
)nl0 Allah and to ser!e onl0 %im/ The0 rela0ed the Di!ine religion to humanit0 and
demonstrated the human moralit0( #hich can gain Allah's appro!al b0 their o#n li!es/
Thus( these chosen ser!ants of Allah represent the !er0 finest model of superior
characteristics( proper moral !alues( and ideal beha!ior and reactions to e!ents/ 6ust as
the0 ser!ed as role models for their societies( Allah re!eals in the 7ur'an that the0 also
sho#ed all future belie!ers ho# to li!e in a manner that pleases Allah=
You have an excellent model in the Messenger of Allah, for all who put their
hope in Allah and the Last Day and remember Allah much. (Surat al-Ahzab: 21)
ach prophet possesses !irtues that are praised in the 7ur'an/ Therefore( belie!ers
must carefull0 stud0 e!er0 detail of these 7ur'anic accounts so that the0 can ta*e these
men's li!es( moral !irtues( and deep de!otion to Allah as models for themsel!es/ ach
prophet #as sent to his o#n tribe( e>perienced different situations( and used !arious
methods to e>plain Allah's e>istence/ 8or that reason( the natures of the prophets' tribes(
and their reactions to the prophets( as #ell as the difficulties e>perienced b0 those #ho
became belie!ers and the prophets themsel!es( pro!ide us #ith important information
about ho# #e can please Allah/
This boo* introduces the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)( #ho is praised in the 7ur'an in
these terms= "You have an excellent example in Abraham and those with him" (1urat
al$Mumtahana= 5)( so that he can ser!e as role model for our o#n li!es/ 1ince e!er0 piece
of information about the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) contains considerable #isdom( #e shall
e>amine his life closel0 in this boo* so that #e can follo# his e>ample/
The Prophet Abraham(pbuh)
You have an excellent example in
Abraham and those with him.
(Surat al-Mumtahana: 4)
Characteristics of the Prophet Abraham`s (pbuh)
Tribe
Allah re!eals that the first prophet #as the Prophet Adam (pbuh)/ The Prophet
Abraham (pbuh) li!ed after the Prophet "oah (pbuh) and according to the 7ur'an( he is a
descendant of the Prophet "oah (pbuh) ( 1urat as$1affat= 24)/ Man0 of the Prophet
Abraham's (pbuh) descendants #ere prophets as #ell( such as the Prophets Isaac( Ishmael(
6acob( 6oseph( Moses( Aaron( Da!id( 1olomon( Facharia( 6ohn( 6esus and Muhammad
(peace be upon them all)/
%istorical sources record that the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) li!ed in Mesopotamia/
The 7ur'an informs us that he and his son( the Prophet Ishmael (pbuh) built the GaHbah/
This confirms the historical accounts that the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) did indeed li!e in
the Middle ast/
Allah states in the 7ur'an that the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) tribe follo#ed
paganism/ In fact( historical sources state that nearl0 all Middle astern tribes at that time
either #orshipped hand$made idols or !arious celestial bodies (e/g/( the Moon and the
1un)/ >ca!ations in Mesopotamia ha!e unco!ered information and remains of temples
(Aiggurats) built for such #orship( as #ell as the remains of man0 stone and cla0 statues/
In short( both the historical and archaeological facts sho# that the ma<orit0 of the
Middle ast( at the time of the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)( #as a pagan land/ Allah chose
the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)( b0 honoring him #ith prophethood( as %is pure ser!ant to
represent the Di!ine religion and proper moral !irtues in the midst of these misguided
pagans/
)ur Iord re!eals that the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) tribe car!ed statues made of
stone or #ood and then as a great de!iance the0 regarded them as false deities and
#orshipped them/ Although de!oid of po#er and life( these pagans belie!ed that these
idols could either harm or help them/ Due to these superstitious beliefs( the0 blindl0
follo#ed the misguided belief s0stem of their ancestors and passed it on to the ne>t one/
Allah re!ealed to the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) that %e #as the Creator of
e!er0thing in the uni!erse and that those #ho belie!ed other#ise #ere utterl0 mista*en/
Although his tribe #anted him to li!e and thin* li*e them( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
turned his bac* on his tribe's traditional belief s0stem( re<ected its false deities( and
declared that onl0 Allah trul0 e>isted/ In order to deepen and reinforce his faith( Allah
sho#ed the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) proofs of %is po#er and dominion=
Because of that, We showed Abraham the dominions of the heavens and Earth
so that he might be one of the people of certainty. (Surat al-An'am: 75)
Although he gre# up among pagans( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) e>hibited such a
!er0 superior character and such an e>cellent moral understanding that he finall0
separated himself from them and de!oted himself to Allah/ @ut he did not content himself
#ith this separation alone( for he then sought to e>plain Allah's e>istence to them and
called them to belief in %im/ Most people of his tribe( ho#e!er( refused to accept the
truths he told them out of lo0alt0 to their ancestors' superstitious religion/ As Allah states
in the 7ur'an=
When they are told: "Follow what Allah has sent down to you," they reply:
"We are following what we found our fathers doing." What, even though their
fathers did not understand a thing and were not guided! (Surat al-Baqara: 170)
)ne of the reasons #h0 his tribe refused to abandon their traditional paganism is
found among all people #ho are distant from true religion= According to them( the ideas
of the ma<orit0 are considered to be right( e!en though the0 are de!iant and superstitious/
According to this distorted logic of these people( Duestioning( researching( or criticiAing
#idel0 held ideas are unacceptable/ This mista*e is so important that Allah states it in the
7ur'an and tells all people to a!oid it( as follo#s=
If you obeyed most of those on Earth, they would misguide you from Allah's
way. They follow nothing but conjecture. They are only guessing. (Surat al-An'am:
116)
The Prophet Abraham (pbuh)( li*e all prophets and belie!ers( did not ma*e this
mista*e/ %e ne!er abandoned the truth( e!en #hen his relati!es and friendsCin fact( his
#hole tribeCopposed him/ %is belief in Allah #as unsha*able( and no difficult0 or
pressure could turn him from his chosen path/
Allah Bestows Prophethood upon Abraham (pbuh)
All societies ha!e been a#are of Allah's e>istence( )neness( Infinite Might and
Po#er? of the Da0 of 6udgment? and of #hat Allah #ills from %is ser!ants/ Allah re!eals
this truth in the follo#ing !erse=
We sent a messenger among every tribe saying: "Worship Allah and keep
clear of all false deities." Among them were some whom Allah guided, but others
received the misguidance they deserved. Travel about the land and see the final fate
of the unbelievers. (Surat an-Nahl: 36)
Prophets are special people #hom Allah selected and endo#ed #ith superior
Dualities/ Their po#erful faith( pleasing moral !irtues( superior character( and e>emplar0
beha!ior al#a0s attracted those around them( and e!entuall0 the0 #ere forced to mo!e
a#a0 from their pagan and misguided societies/ )ne of the most important Dualities
setting them apart is the fact that Allah re!ealed the truth to them/ As Allah re!eals in the
7ur'an=
We have revealed to you, as We revealed to Noah and the prophets who came
after him. And We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, 1acob, the Descendents,
1esus, 1ob, 1onah, Aaron, and Solomon. And We gave David the Psalm. (Surat an-
Nisa: 163)
Allah's use of prophets to spread %is re!elation among their people #as a great
blessing for humanit0( for %is re!elation continues to sho# people the #a0 to the true
path( teach them ho# to #orship( describe proper moral !alues( and ma*es %is religion
*no#n to those people #ho li!e after the time of the Prophet Muhammad (ma0 Allah
bless him and grant him peace)( the last prophet/ )ur Iord informs us that %e has re!ealed
to the prophets ho# their follo#ers should beha!e and #orship %im=
We made them leaders, guiding by Our command, and revealed to them how
to do good actions, perform prayer, and give alms. And they worshipped Us. (Surat
al-Anbiya: 73)
Throughout their li!es( the prophets sought to gain %is good pleasure and
compassion( as #ell as %is Paradise/ Thus( the0 li!ed e>emplar0 li!es b0 full0 compl0ing
#ith %is commands/
Allah besto#ed prophethood( an honorable position attained b0 %is chosen
ser!ants( upon the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) after a period of testing/ Allah re!eals this in
the follo#ing !erse=
Remember when Abraham was tested by his Lord with certain words, which
he carried out perfectly. He Allah] said: "I will make you a model for humanity."
He Abraham] asked: "And what of my descendents?" He Allah] replied: "My
contract does not include the wrongdoers." (Surat al-Baqara: 124)
As stated in this !erse( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) obe0ed our Iord during this
test and perfectl0 fulfilled all of %is commands/ 6ust li*e the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)( all
belie!ers ha!e the same responsibilit0/ %is unconditional obedience to Allah and
submission to %is commands are fine models for all belie!ers/
Allah endo#ed the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) #ith prophethood at an earl0 age
(1urat al$Anbi0a= .3)( and re!ealed the truth to him=
Or do they in fact envy other people for the bounty Allah has granted them?
We gave the family of Abraham the Book and Wisdom, and We gave them an
immense kingdom. (Surat an-Nisa: 54)
In other !erses( Allah re!eals that %e ga!e te>ts to the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) and
his descendents=
. although the Hereafter is better and longer lasting. This is certainly stated]
in the earlier texts, the texts of Abraham and Moses. (Surat al-A'la: 17-19)
Or has he not been informed what is in the texts of Moses and of Abraham,
who fully discharged his mission]? (Surat an-Najm: 36-37)
This sho#s that Allah had sent do#n te>ts to the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) before
%is re!elation of the Torah to Prophet Moses (pbuh)/ These te>ts contain the true religion(
#hich is based on the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) submission to Allah/ The hadith
literature records the follo#ing con!ersation=
I [Abu Dharr] asked: "O Messenger of Allah, has anything from the pages
of the Prophet Abraham pbuh! and the Prophet Moses pbuh! been sent do"n
to you#" $e replied: "O Abu Dharr," ["%es," he said, "su&h 'erses "ere
re'ealed," and began to read them:] "('eryone "ho &leans himself "ell, re&alls
the name of the )ord, and performs the prayers has a&hie'ed his hopes*
Perhaps you hold the life of this "orld to be superior* +ut the $ereafter is
more auspi&ious and more &onstant* ,hese [truths] also e-ist in pre'ious
pages, the pages of Abraham pbuh! and Moses pbuh!*"

The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) Religion
Who could have a better religion than someone who submits himself
completely to Allah, is a good-doer, and follows the religion of Abraham, a man of
pure natural belief?... (Surat an-Nisa: 125)
People continue to argue o!er #hich religion the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
follo#ed/ 6e#s regard him as a 6e#ish prophet and claim to follo# his path/ Christians
also consider him a 6e#ish prophet( but claim that he follo#ed the Prophet 6esus (pbuh)(
#ho came after him/
In the 7ur'an ho#e!er( Allah re!eals the truth of this matter b0 pro!iding certain
information=
Or do they say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, 1acob, and the Descendents were
1ews or Christians? Say: "Do you know better, or does Allah?" Who could do
greater wrong than someone who hides the evidence he has been given by Allah?
Allah is not unaware of what you do. (Surat al-Baqara: 140)
Moreo!er( other !erses e>pose <ust ho# irrational this debate reall0 is=
O People of the Book. Why do you argue about Abraham when the Torah and
Gospel were only sent down after him? Why don't you use your intellect? You are
the ones who argued about that of which you had knowledge. But why do you argue
about something of which you have no knowledge? Allah knows; you do not know.
(Surah Al 'Imran: 65-66)
Allah pro!ides in the 7ur'an the most accurate information about the Prophet
Abraham (pbuh)( for it is the onl0 uncorrupted boo* of Allah/ If people ta*e other sources
as guides( the0 fall into great error and interpret matters in the light of their o#n ideas and
beliefs/ As in all matters( ho#e!er( belie!ers ta*e the 7ur'an and the 1unnah of our
Prophet (ma0 Allah bless him and grant him peace) as the onl0 true sources of information
about the prophets and their lines( for teaching falsehoods and engaging in speculation and
guess#or*( particularl0 about the prophets( displeases Allah/
)nl0 Allah states in the 7ur'an the #hole truth about the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)=
Abraham was neither a 1ew nor a Christian, but a man of pure natural belief
-a Muslim. He was not one of the idolaters. (Surah Al 'Imran: 67)
In the 7ur'an Allah calls the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) a hanif, instead of a Jew or a
Christian. Hanif means a devout, upright, and righteous person who submits to Allah's
command and never moves away from His religion. The most hanif characteristics of the
Prophet Abraham (pbuh) #ere his belief in the )ne and )nl0 Allah and his submission to
%im/
In another !erse( our Iord commands the Prophet Muhammad (ma0 Allah bless
him and grant him peace) to abide b0 the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) religion=
Then We revealed to you: "Follow the religion of Abraham, a man of pure
natural belief. He was not one of the idolaters." (Surat an-Nahl: 123)
Allah #ishes people to turn to religion in a hanif manner( as pure belie!ers/ Allah
clearl0 emphasiAes that hanif people do not ascribe partners to %im=
So set your face firmly towards the Religion, as a pure natural believer, Allah's
natural pattern on which He made humanity. There is no changing in Allah's
Creation. That is the true Religion-but most people do not know it. (Surat ar-Rum:
30)
As can be understood from se!eral !erses( the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) religion
#as essentiall0 the same as Islam/ In an0 case( all di!inel0 re!ealed religions are( in their
original and uncorrupted forms( essentiall0 built on earning Allah's good pleasure(
compassion( and Paradise/ The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) children and grandchildren( as
#ell as other de!out indi!iduals from his line( adhered to this religion after his death/ 8or
e>ample( Allah tells in the 7ur'an the Prophet 6oseph's (pbuh) address to his fello#
prisoners=
I hold fast to the creed of my forebears Abraham, Isaac, and 1acob. We don't
associate anything with Allah. And that is how Allah has favored us and all
humanity, but most do not give thanks. (Surah Yusuf: 38)
All hanifs( regardless of #hen the0 li!e( are distinguished b0 their glorification of
Allah #ithout ascribing partners to %im/ )ne of the prophets' main duties #as to rescue
people from their misguided belief s0stems and #orld!ie#s( as #ell as those practices and
!alues that transgressed the limits set do#n b0 Allah for humanit0( and to call their people
to the true religion/ )ne hadith informs us of the follo#ing=
Abu Barah !ra" relates that# $%he &essenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, once ased# ''hall ( inform you of a great sin, one of the greatest
sins) ...*(t is+ to ascribe a partner to Allah.'$
.
In one !erse( Allah re!eals that Islam is as eas0 as the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh)
religion=
... He Allah] has selected you and not placed any constraint upon you in the
religion-the religion of your forefather Abraham. He named you Muslims before,
and also in this, so that the messenger could be witness against you and you could be
witnesses against all of humanity. So perform the prescribed prayers, give alms, and
hold fast to Allah. He is your Protector-the Best Protector, the Best Helper. (Surat
al-Hajj: 78)
According to the 7ur'an the people #ho turn to Allah and li!e b0 %is religion in its
true sense are &uslim/ The #ord &uslim comes from the Arabic #ord salam and means
one who has achieved well, being or who has submitted !to Allah". The essence of being
Muslim lies in submitting to Allah and li!ing in the ensuing peace and securit0/ The
prophets( all of #hom guided their people to the true path( submitted totall0 to our Iord
and #ere sincerel0 de!oted to %im( are role models for us/ @0 turning to and then
submitting to our Iord( see*ing refuge in %im( ta*ing %im as their onl0 friend( and as*ing
for help onl0 from %im( the0 are all called &uslim in the 7ur'an/
8or instance( Allah commanded the prophet "oah (pbuh) to tell his tribe "My wage
is the responsibility of Allah alone. I am commanded to be one of the Muslims"
(1urah 'unus= JK)? the Prophet Moses (pbuh) told his tribe "My people. If you believe in
Allah, then put your trust in Him, if you are Muslims" (1urah 'unus= 25)? and the
Prophet 1olomon (pbuh) addressed his tribe in these terms= "Do not rise up against me,
but come to me in submission as Muslims]" (1urat An$"aml= 4+)/ In the 7ur'an Allah
re!eals the follo#ing to %is follo#ers=
When I inspired the Disciples of 1esus] to believe in Me and in My Messenger
1esus], they said: "We believe. Bear witness that we are Muslims." (Surat al-
Ma'ida: 111)
As can be seen from the abo!e !erses( sincere belie!ers are those people #ho
submit to Allah( li!e solel0 b0 religious moral !alues( and ha!e pure faith/ Allah honors
such people #ith the name &uslim.
The Prophet 6oseph's (pbuh) pra0er as stated in the !erse is a fine e>ample for us in
se!eral areas/ Allah re!eals it in the follo#ing !erse=
... You have granted power to me in the land and taught me the true meaning
of events. O, Originator of the heavens and Earth. You are my Friend in this world
and the Hereafter, so take me as a Muslim at my death and join me to the people
who are righteous. (Surah Yusuf: 101)
The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) <o0ful faith in Allah( his deep lo!e for %im( his
submission to all of %is commands( as #ell as his obedience and superior moralit0( are
e>plained in the 7ur'an/ 1ome of these !erses read=
Our Lord, make us both Muslims submitted to You and our descendents a
Muslim community submitted to You. Show us our rites of worship and turn toward
us. You are the Ever-Returning, the Most Merciful. (Surat al-Baqara: 128)
When his Lord said to him: "Become a Muslim," he Abraham] said: "I am a
Muslim who has submitted to the Lord of all the worlds." (Surat al-Baqara: 131)
!er0 Muslim must ta*e the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) pleasing moralit0( sincere
faith( and total submission and obedience to Allah as role models/ In fact( his discernment
and determination in presenting Allah's message are among the important traits that all
people #ho call themsel!es Muslims should adopt/
)riginall0( all di!ine religions #ere based on the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh)
religion/ %o#e!er( Christianit0 and 6udaism #ere corrupted o!er time and so mo!ed a#a0
from their original nature= not ascribing partners to Allah (the greatest sin) and li!ing
solel0 to earn %is good pleasure/ As a matter of fact( there are man0 parts conforming to
true religion and good morals in the Torah and the Bospel of our da0/
The lo!e and respect felt b0 both present$da0 Christians and 6e#s for the Prophet
Abraham (pbuh) unites them in a common foundation #ith Muslims/ Members of these
three di!inel0 re!ealed religions therefore share a common belief in Allah( #hich the0
ha!e inherited from the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)( and see* to ser!e %im/ )n the other
hand( it is clear that the error of trinit0 held b0 some Christians is a de!iant belief and a
great sin( and this is re!ealed in the 7ur'an/ %o#e!er( the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) pure
natural belief is a common #ord bet#een the Muslims and the People of the @oo*/ Allah
re!eals in the 7ur'an that Muslims ha!e in!ited them to this common #ord=
Say: "O People of the Book Christians and 1ews], come to a proposition that
is the same for us and you-that we should worship none but Allah, associate no
partners with Him, and take no one of us as lords besides Allah." If they turn away,
say: "Bear witness that we are Muslims." (Surah Al 'Imran: 64)

When those who do not believe were plotting against you to imprison you, kill

As stated earlier( the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) tribe #orshipped statues that their

All of these characteristics made him a courageous and determined indi!idual/ Allah
re!eals some of his #ords in the 7ur'an( as follo#s=
His tribe argued with him. He said: "Are you arguing with me about Allah,
when He has guided me? I have no fear of any partner you ascribe to Him, unless my

with Him, when you yourselves apparently have no fear of associating partners with
Allah, for which He has sent down no authority to you? Which of the two parties is
more entitled to feel safe, if you have any knowledge?" (Surat al-An'am: 80-81)

The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) Conversations
with His Father
All Muslims are responsible for in!iting people to belie!e in Allah/ In the 7ur'an
Allah refers to this as commanding what is right and forbidding what is wrong. This dut0
arises out of the fact that people must be #arned( in other #ords informed and reminded
of certain important truths( such as that Allah created the uni!erse from nothing( that
e!er0 human being is responsible to our Iord and #ill ha!e to account to %im in the
%ereafter( and that the0 #ill be re#arded in the %ereafter for #hat the0 did in this #orld/
Those #ho shoulder this responsibilit0 are de!out Muslims #ho sincerel0 belie!e in
Allah and #ho hold %im in a#e out of a deep$rooted respect/ Allah has gi!en them the
po#er( #isdom( and intelligence to distinguish bet#een right and #rong/ In e>change(
the0 are to e>plain %is religion in the light of the addressee's character( state of mind( and
!ie#point on life in the most pleasant and appropriate manner possible/ In addition( the0
must properl0 e!aluate the addressee's reaction and response and adapt their methods in
order to effecti!el0 communicate the di!ine message/ As performing this obligation calls
for considerable effort( #arning #hole societies and e>plaining the religion to tribes
whose fathers have not been warned( namel0( communities that are far from religion's
moral !alues( is a hea!0 responsibilit0/ In fact( Allah tells belie!ers to spread %is religion
with wisdom and pleasant advice( as the follo#ing !erse re!eals=
Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and fair admonition, and argue with
them in the kindest way. Your Lord knows best who is misguided from His way. And
He knows best who are guided. (Surat an-Nahl: 125)
ach Muslim is entrusted #ith e>plaining and ad!ising others about Allah's
e>istence and the 7ur'an's beauties/ To enable them to carr0 out this responsibilit0( Allah
has re!ealed in the 7ur'an the most suitable and appropriate methods/ 8or e>ample(
belie!ers should in!ite their friends and famil0 members first to belie!e in Allah and the
Da0 of 6udgment=
So do not call on any other deity along with Allah, or you will be among those
who will be punished. Warn your near relatives. (Surat ash-Shu'ara: 213-14)
The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) #ords to his father are e>emplar0 in this respect/ %e
e>plained to his father( in a most #ise manner( that #orshipping idols #as eDui!alent to
ascribing partners to Allah and that a person should ser!e Allah alone/ 1ome of these
#ords are re!ealed in the 7ur'an=
Remember when Abraham said to his father, Azar: "Do you take idols as
gods? I see that you and your tribe are clearly misguided." (Surat al-An'am: 74)
Remember when he Abraham] said to his father: "Father, why do you
worship that which can neither hear nor see, and is of no use to you at all? Father,
knowledge that never reached you has come to me. So follow me, and I will guide you
to the right path." (Surah Maryam: 42-43)
)ne of the most important elements of this con!ersation( #hich should be ta*en as
a model( is that no matter ho# arrogant and difficult an unbelie!er ma0 be( a belie!er
must remain patient #hile rela0ing the message and beha!e in the most pleasant manner
possible/
The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) approach here is e>actl0 the same as that of the
Prophet Moses (pbuh) to#ard Pharaoh/ The Prophet Moses (pbuh) also emplo0ed a
temperate and patient st0le #hen rela0ing Allah's message to Pharaoh( in compliance #ith
Allah's command to "speak to him with gentle words so that, hopefully, he will pay
heed or show some fear" (1urah Ta %a= 55)/
Allah re!eals the message that the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) ga!e to his father( as
#ell as his father's reaction=
Abraham said:] "Omy father, do not worship satan. Satan was disobedient to
the All-Merciful. Father, I am afraid that a punishment from the All-Merciful will
afflict you, and turn you into a comrade of satan." He his father] replied: "Do you
forsake my deities, Abraham? If you do not stop, I will stone you. Keep away from
me for a good long time." He Abraham] said: "Peace be upon you. I will ask my
Lord to forgive you. He has always honored me. I will separate myself from you and
all that you call upon besides Allah, and I will call upon my Lord. It may well be
that, in calling upon my Lord, I will not be disappointed." (Surah Maryam: 44-46)
These con!ersations Allah re!ealed in the 7ur'an contain important #isdom/ 8irst
and foremost( the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) courageous and humble attitude is most
stri*ing/ %e carried out Allah's order( e!en at the ris* of his o#n life( and in!ited his father
to the true path/ %e ris*ed losing his father's lo!e( help( and goods? refused to be
intimidated b0 his father's threats( and displa0ed the greatest humilit0 and patience #hen
told to lea!e/
Gno#ing that Allah #ould help him and sho# him the right path( he beha!ed
according to the comfort and securit0 that such *no#ledge imparted/ The #a0 that he
immediatel0 pra0ed to Allah after being un<ustl0 forced to lea!e the house in #hich he
li!ed( and his faith that his pra0er #ould be heard demonstrate the e>emplar0 modest0 and
purit0 reDuired of a Muslim/ Moreo!er( he displa0ed a most pleasing moral attitude
to#ard his father( #ho #as Duite hostile/ %e maintained his moderate st0le and continued
to call him my father/ All Muslims should adopt this e>ample of a !er0 superior moralit0
#hen calling people to the truth/
%e approached his father #ith great affection and modest0( and humbl0 in!ited him
to the true path/ Ehen his father persisted in his denial( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
immediatel0 sought refuge in Allah and remo!ed himself/ This attitude sho#s that
Muslims are to #or* onl0 for Allah's good pleasure( and to lo!e #hat %e lo!es and hate
#hat %e hates/ Allah re!eals this Dualit0( #hich e!er0 Muslim should possess( thus=
It is not right for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the
idolater-even if they are close relatives-after it has become clear to them that they
are the Companions of the Blazing Fire. Abraham would not have asked forgiveness
for his father but for a promise he made to him. And when it became clear to him
Abraham] that he his father] was an enemy of Allah, he renounced him. Abraham
was tender-hearted and forbearing. (Surat at-Tawba: 113-14)
Another note#orth0 feature of this con!ersation bet#een the Prophet Abraham
(pbuh) and his father Allah re!ealed in the !erses of the 7ur'an( is the latter's de!otion to
paganism/ 1o strong #as his de!otion that it led him to threaten his son #ith death b0
stoning( a son #ho #as of his o#n blood( #hom he had raised and *ept b0 his side( and
#ho treated his father so respectfull0/ The onl0 reason for his father's #rath #as that the
Prophet Abraham (pbuh) #orshipped onl0 Allah and re<ected his tribe's paganism/ This is
an e>ample of the unbelie!ers' cruel( uncompromising( and oppressi!e natures/
The Unbeliever Advised by the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
Allah refers in the 7ur'an to an unbelie!ing ruler #hom the Prophet Abraham
(pbuh) met #hen calling people to belie!e in Allah/ Gno#n as "imrod in !arious
historical sources( Allah re!eals in the 7ur'an that he and the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
engaged in an important con!ersation=
What about the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord, on the basis
that Allah had given him sovereignty? Abraham said: "My Lord is He Who gives life
and causes to die." He Nimrod] said: "I too give life and cause to die..." (Surat al-
Baqara: 258)
As this !erse ma*es clear( "imrod had become !er0 arrogant due to his goods(
propert0( and rule/ Ehile tal*ing #ith the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)( he made the
enormous and irrational claim that he also possessed the po#er of Creation/ @0
proclaiming his o#n di!init0 in utter ignorance( as he #as so proud of his #ealth and
chattel( he #as( in fact( den0ing Allah/ @ecause of his pride( he re<ected to see Allah's
might and po#er o!er the uni!erse/
After informing "imrod of Allah's e>istence and oneness( this unbelie!er #ho gre#
arrogant against Allah( irrationall0 enters into debate #ith the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
and he ma*es a most #ise and rational statement b0 the inspiration of Allah=
"Allah makes the Sun come from the East. Make it come from the West." And
the disbeliever Nimrod] was dumbfounded. Allah does not guide wrongdoing
people. (Surat al-Baqara: 258)
All prophets ha!e al#a0s emplo0ed #ise and rational arguments( such as the
e>ample gi!en abo!e/ Allah has enabled those belie!ers #ho spread %is message to do so
most effecti!el0( thus refuting the unbelie!ers' mista*en #orld!ie#/ 1uch arguments
al#a0s lea!e unbelie!ers( #ho belie!e themsel!es to be on the right path and #ho trust in
their #ealth( po#er( and idols( unable to mount a serious defense of their belief s0stems/
Therefore( the0 are al#a0s condemned to be defeated and at a loss for #ords/
Another important #isdom in the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) response as seen in the
!erses is his honest0 and naturalness/ A sincere and honest e>planation al#a0s influences
peoples' hearts and consciences/ Allah's e>istence is e!ident( and the belie!er's
e>planation of this manifest truth from the heart al#a0s touches other people/ @ut e!en if
the0 are so influenced( some unbelie!ers persist in their unbelief/ 1uch people( #ho
generall0 are far remo!ed from religion( un#isel0 gro# proud out of the belief that their
#ealth( attracti!eness( or status are the results of their o#n efforts/ The0 un<ustl0 regard
themsel!es as superior and forget about Allah/ 1atan encourages their pride and uses the
po#er and position that the0 mista*enl0 consider their o#n( to pre!ent them from ser!ing
Allah/
@elie!ers encounter man0 people as the0 spread Allah's message/ Man0 people( due
to their pride( cannot see Allah's might and po#er/ In such situations( belie!ers must gi!e
e>amples that sho# people <ust ho# helpless the0 reall0 are in order to eliminate their
pride/ As a result( unbelie!ers #ill realiAe that their arrogance and pride in their
possessions are of no significance/ Braduall0( the0 #ill realiAe that their strength and
po#er are limited( that e!er0thing #ill end #ith death( and that Allah is the onl0 absolute
being/
The mode of e>plication used b0 the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) to rela0 the truth to
"imrod sho#s <ust ho# important the use of rational( #ise( and target$oriented speech is
in spreading %is message/ @elie!ers must ne!er engage in pointless arguments? rather(
the0 must al#a0s use effecti!e and rational e>planations to defeat the audience's
superstitious beliefs and demonstrate Allah's e>istence b0 anal0Aing the audience
members' ps0chological states and logical frame#or*s/ Clearl0( onl0 people #ith deep
faith( #ho scrupulousl0 adhere to Allah's commands and #ho hold %im in a#e( #ill be
able to de!ise such an effecti!e and #ise mode of e>plication/ This is true( because
#isdom is a di!ine blessing that must be sought from Allah/ Allah imparts this secret to
us( as follo#s=
He gives wisdom to whoever He wills, and he who has been given wisdom has
been given great good... (Surat al-Baqara: 269)
The Prophet Abraham (pbuh) Calls His Tribe
%o# should belie!ers beha!e #ith those #ho den0 or re<ect the truthL Allah tells
belie!ers to spread %is message in a #ell$considered st0le and method/ There is more than
one #a0 of calling people to the truth/ "aturall0( the method changes according to the
audience members' positions( conditions( ideas( and beliefs/ 8or e>ample( Allah refers to
the Prophet "oah (pbuh)( #ho e>plained %is e>istence both publicly and privately b0
using indirect methods to turn them to#ard %is religion/ (1urah "uh= ,)
Another one of the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) most note#orth0 methods #as to
incite his tribe's consciences and to emplo0 methods that #ould encourage them to thin*/
%e as*ed them Duestions( thereb0 e>posing the irrational and confused nature of their
beliefs/ %e sho#ed them that their idols #ere nothing more than unconscious pieces of
#ood and stone( and used a cle!er plan to con!ince their hearts and minds of this/ As he
caused his tribe's traditional pagan #orld!ie# to collapse b0 spreading Allah's truth( he
also e>plained Allah's e>istence and oneness/ In the 7ur'an Allah describes the Prophet
Abraham's (pbuh) method in the follo#ing #ords=
When night covered him Abraham], he saw a star and said: "This is my
Lord!" Then when it set, he said: "I do not love that which sets." Then when he saw
the Moon come up, he said: "This is my Lord!" Then when it set, he said: "If my
Lord does not guide me, I will be one of the misguided people." Then when he saw
the Sun come up, he said: "This is my Lord! This is greater!" Then when it set, he
said: "My tribe, I am free of what you associate with Allah! I have turned my face to
Him Who brought the heavens and Earth into being, a pure natural believer. I am
not one of the idolaters." (Surat al-An'am: 76-79)
The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) comments regarding the Moon( the 1un( and stars in
these !erses abo!e are probabl0 not his o#n thoughts( but rather a means of
communicating Allah's message to his tribe/ (Allah *no#s the truth/) The Prophet
Abraham (pbuh) *ne# that the Moon and stars #ould disappear #hen the 1un rose( and
that the 1un #ould sin* again after it had risen/ 1ince his pagan tribe #ere not reasoning
and <udging in the light of true faith( ho#e!er( he ma0 ha!e chosen to emplo0 the gradual
e>planation outlined abo!e/
As #e mentioned earlier( in a gra!e irrationalit0 the pagan societies in the Middle
ast at that time #orshipped celestial bodies( such as the 1un and the Moon( in addition to
idols made b0 themsel!es and their ancestors/ Therefore( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
ma0 ha!e #ished to use the Duestion$and$ans#er method to e>plain #h0 these supposedl0
di!ine ob<ects #ere not actuall0 di!ine/ And so he first portra0ed the stars as di!ine in
order to dra# his tribe's attention to them( and then pro!ed( as Allah inspired him( #h0
these could not actuall0 be deities/ Allah re!eals the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) e>pression
in a !erse( "I do not love what sets" (1urat al$An'am= J.) is also an important message
aimed at his tribe( for he indirectl0 e>plained that a di!ine entit0 #as immortal and
indestructible/ (Allah *no#s the truth/) In fact( these are some of our Iord's names= al,
Ba-i (%e Eho continues( the immortal one) and al,.a'im (%e Eho persists)/
After this( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) ma0 ha!e emplo0ed the same method #ith
regard to the Moon( another so,called deit0( to sho# his tribe that it #as not di!ine/ %e
ma0 ha!e used the same logic for the 1un( particularl0 b0 emphasiAing that it #as the
greatest/ %is e>planation that it #as not di!ine dealt a ma<or blo# to their pagan
#orld!ie#( because be0ond the 1un there #as no greater ph0sical being !isible to the
tribe/
Eith the #ords Allah re!eals in the 7ur'an as "I am not one of the idolaters"
(1urat al$An'am= J,)( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) e>plained that Allah created all of
these things( that %e #as the true Allah( and that he ascribed no partners to %im/ Bi!en
the abo!e( #e can see that the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) *ne# a great deal about his tribe's
pagan belief s0stem/ %e put for#ard all of these e>amples to spread Allah's message and
to e>pose their defecti!e logic and misguided beliefs/ In fact( it seems that his tribe sought
to debate #ith him=
His tribe argued with him. He said: "Are you arguing with me about Allah,
when He has guided me? I have no fear of any partner you ascribe to Him, unless my
Lord should will such a thing to happen. My Lord encompasses all things in His
knowledge, so will you not pay heed?" (Surat al-An'am: 80)
In calling his tribe to the truth( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) acted upon #hat %e
inspired in him/ This is clearl0 e!ident from the methods he emplo0ed and the e>amples
he ga!e/ In the !erse ;This is the argument Ee ga!e to Abraham against his tribe/ Ee
raise in ran* an0one Ee #ill/ 'our Iord is All$Eise( All$Gno#ing; (1urat al$An'am= 24)(
Allah re!eals that %e ga!e the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) !arious proofs to use against his
tribe/
This manner of communication sets an e>ample for all Muslims/ In other #ords(
belie!ers must demolish the other side's false and groundless beliefs and then present
indisputable proof of Allah's e>istence and oneness/ 8ollo#ing this( the0 must call on the
other side to belie!e in Allah and ser!e onl0 %im/ If the other side cannot abandon its
misguided belief s0stem and distorted logic( it #ill be difficult for them to belie!e in Allah
and become true Muslims/ True faith can come about onl0 #hen people abandon all of
their idols and superstitious ideologies and philosophies/
The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) lo!e of Allah( <o0ous faith( and scrupulous
adherence to %is commands can be clearl0 seen in ho# he conducted himself #ith others/
The #a0 in #hich he communicated #ith his father and tribe sho#s in the finest possible
#a0 that he #as chosen b0 Allah( Eho made him superior to all others/ In the 7ur'an
Allah re!eals=
Recite to them the story of Abraham, when he asked his father and his tribe:
"What do you worship?" They said: "We worship idols and will continue to cling to
them." He asked: "Do they hear you when you call? Do they help you or harm you?"
They said: "No, but this is what we found our fathers doing." He asked: "Have you
really thought about what you worship, you and your fathers who came before?"
(Surat ash-Shu'ara: 69-76)
As can be seen in the abo!e !erses( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) used !arious
methods and analogies to e>plain to his tribe ho# futile and irrational it #as to #orship
idols/ Their onl0 response #as that the0 #ould continue to follo# their ancestors' path as
Allah states in the !erses/ This !astl0 un#ise response is freDuentl0 encountered in
societies that are far from religion and is often used to <ustif0 superstition( although it has
no foundation in the face of di!ine religion/ In the continuation of these !erses( the
Prophet Abraham (pbuh) calls his tribe to faith and introduces them to our Iord=
"They are all my enemies-except for the Lord of all the worlds: He Who
created me and guides me; He Who gives me food and drink; and when I am ill, He
heals me; He Who will cause my death and then give me life; He Who I sincerely
hope will forgive my mistakes on the Day of Reckoning." (Surat ash-Shu'ara: 77-82)
As Allah states in the 7ur'an( the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) tribe freDuentl0 stated
their determination to persist in their paganism/ %e responded b0 praising our Iord #ith
%is finest names/ )nl0 Allah creates or destro0s e!er0thing in the uni!erse( animate or

Prophet Abraham (pbuh) re!eals( our Iord Allah heals sic* people( b0 restoring them to
health/ &nless Allah #ills( no medicine or doctor can restore an0one to health/
Allah creates humanit0 and( in the same #a0( #ill ta*e each person's soul at the
moment of his or her death/ !en before a person is born( Allah has alread0 established
the length of his or her life( #hat #ill happen to them( and all that the0 #ill sa0 and do/ In
other #ords( people do not control their destin0( for Allah has #ritten it e!en before the
person is born/
Allah created this #orld as a testing arena and then sent messengers to lead others
to the true path b0 means of re!elation/ )n the Da0 of 6udgment( e!er0 human being #ill

Remember that human beings ha!e no po#er to bring others to the true path( for
their onl0 responsibilit0 is to rela0 %is message/ In fact( this is a religious obligation for
all belie!ers/ Ehether or not an unbelie!er turns to faith depends totall0 on Allah's
guidance( for no one can belie!e unless Allah so #ills/ Indeed( despite the strength that the
Prophet Abraham (pbuh) acDuired from his faith in Allah( his pagan tribe( #ho had no fear
of Allah and ignored their consciences( persisted in their denial/ In fact( the0 #ent so far
as to threaten the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) #ith death b0 fire/ Thus( all belie!ers must

In one !erse( our Iord states that "... It is the truth from your Lord; so let

"Perhaps you will destroy yourself with grief because they will not become

The Prophet Abraham (pbuh) Entraps the Idols
According to the 7ur'an Allah gi!es those #ho fear and hold %im in a#e the ability
to distinguish between right and wrong. This great *indness and superior blessing is
restricted to the belie!ers/ The methods the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) used to call his tribe
to belief( as #ell as his decisions and st0les of presentation( are all important e>amples of
this great blessing/
)ne e>ample is the trap he laid for his tribe's idols/ Bi!en that he #as all alone and
operating in a dangerous en!ironment( he too* certain precautions to pre!ent bodil0 harm
and to ma*e sure that Allah's message #ould be heard/ 8or e>ample( he told the
unbelie!ers around him that he #as ill so that the0 #ould go a#a0=
And Abraham] asked his father and his tribe: "What are you worshipping? Is
it falsehood-deities besides Allah-that you desire? So what are your thoughts
about the Lord of all the worlds?" He looked at the stars and said: "I am sick." So
they turned their backs on him. ( Surat as-Saffat: 85-90)
After sending the unbelie!ers a#a0( he #ent up to the idols and smashed them=
He turned surreptitiously to their deities and asked: "Don't you eat? What is
the matter with you that you don't speak?" He turned on them, striking out with his
right hand. ( Surat as-Saffat: 91-93)
He broke them in pieces, except for the largest one, so that they would have it
to consult! (Surat al-Anbiya: 58)
Iea!ing the largest idol untouched sho#s great #isdom/ Ehen his tribe sa# #hat
had happened and that onl0 the largest idol remained( the0 immediatel0 began loo*ing for
the person #ho had done this/ 1ince the0 #ere a#are of the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh)
opposition to their idols and paganism( the0 Duic*l0 realiAed that he #as responsible and
so sought him out to ta*e their re!enge=
They exclaimed: "Who has done this to our deities? He is definitely one of the
wrongdoers!" They said: "We heard a young man mentioning them. They call him
Abraham." They ordered: "Bring him before the people's eyes so they can be
witnesses!" They asked: "Did you do this to our deities, Abraham?" (Surat al-
Anbiya: 59-62)
That Duestion re!ealed #h0 the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) did not destro0 the largest
idol=
He said: "No, this one, the largest of them, did it. Ask them, if they are able to
speak!" (Surat al-Anbiya: 63)
%earing this response( the unbelie!ers ine!itabl0 began thin*ing and understanding
that their idols #ould ne!er ha!e the po#er of speech/ And so his plan succeeded( for it
caused them to Duestion their pagan belief s0stem/ Allah sa0s=
They consulted among themselves and said: "It is you yourselves who are
wrongdoers." (Surat al-Anbiya: 64)
%o#e!er( their regret did not last long/ Despite ha!ing understood the truth( the0
again decided to oppose the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) in order to maintain their traditional
pagan belief s0stem( #hich #as in line #ith their o#n transitor0 #orldl0 interests=
But then they relapsed back into their disbelief: "You know full well these
idols cannot talk." He said: "Do you then worship, instead of Allah, that which
cannot help or harm you in any way? Shame on you and what you worship besides
Allah! Will you not use your intellect?" They said: "Burn him and support your
deities, if you are resolved to do something." (Surat al-Anbiya: 65-68)
The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) approach Allah re!eals in these !erses displa0s a
finel0 calculated plan and #isdom b0 Allah's inspiration/ 1ending the people a#a0 b0
telling them that he #as ill( he then smashed all but the largest idol in the hope that the0
#ould respond as he e>pected/ This trap sho#s that he acted under Allah's inspiration and
had superior intelligence and foresight/ &nder di!ine inspiration( he de!ised a brilliant
trap and( b0 Allah's #ill( achie!ed a most pleasing success/ After smashing the idols( he
tested his tribe's belief s0stem b0 sa0ing that the largest idol had destro0ed the others/
)ne aim of this plan #as to ma*e his tribe realiAe <ust ho# irrational their belief

their deeds( he *ne# that the0 #ould <ust ma*e ne# idols and persist in their paganism/
The important thing( therefore( #as to ma*e them understand that such superstitious
#orship #as contrar0 to faith in Allah and %is re!elation/
It is totall0 irrational to thin* that statues can eat( drin*( mo!e( or do an0 harm or

difficult0( the0 see* their idols' help and refrain from displeasing them/ The0 do so due to
their fear of their idols and their irrational and illogical belief that lifeless idols created the
uni!erse and all li!ing things( direct e!er0thing #ithin the uni!erse( and besto# health and
plent0( as #ell as dail0 bread( po#er( and understanding( upon humanit0/ Allah describes
their great mista*e in the follo#ing terms=
. who are not capable of helping them and cannot even help themselves? If
you call them unbelievers] to guidance, they will not follow you. It makes no
difference if you call them or stay silent. (Surat al-A'raf: 192-93)
Do they have legs with which they can walk? Do they have hands with which
they can grasp? Do they have eyes with which they can see? Do they have ears with
which they can hear? Say: "Call on your deities, try all of your wiles against me, and
grant me no reprieve." (Surat al-A'raf: 195)
%o#e!er( such a lac* of understanding is not limited to the Prophet Abraham's

and We will abandon them to wander blindly in their excessive insolence. Even if We
sent down angels to them, the dead spoke to them, and We gathered together
everything in front of them right before their eyes, they would still not believe unless
Allah willed. The truth is that most of them are ignorant. (Surat al-An'am: 109-111)
As #e ha!e seen( claiming that unconscious atoms( minerals( and blind chance

their idols( Dar#inists use such concepts as the self,organi/ation of matter and nature's

This can be clearl0 seen in popular publications that support the theor0 of e!olution/

Professor Philip 6ohnson( a contemporar0 critic of Dar#inism( describes the theor0 of
e!olution and modern materialist philosoph0 in general as a *ind of idolatr0=
1 denial is always a temptation, and outright atheism is only the most superficial
form of denial1 Another time, honored strategy *of denial+ is to ... *substitute+ something
we can control. %his is called idolatry. 2rimitive tribes mae idols of wood or clay.
'ophisticated modern intellectuals mae idols of their theories, still employing the word
3od 1 but in such a way that it adds nothing to chance and the laws of nature. All who
pursue this strategy are substituting the created thing for the Creator, and this is the
essence of idolatry.
/
Indeed( substituting the created and helpless entities for our Iord( Eho created the
#hole uni!erse from nothing (surel0 Allah is be0ond all that #hich the0 falsel0 ascribe to
%im)( has al#a0s been one of paganism's main themes/ The Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
struggled against this !er0 #orld!ie#( as Allah re!eals in the follo#ing !erse=
Remember when he Abraham] asked his father: "Father, why do you worship
what can neither hear nor see and is of no use to you at all?" (Surah Maryam: 42)
. when he asked his father and his tribe: "What are these statues you are
clinging to?" They said: "We found our fathers worshipping them." He said: "You
and your fathers are clearly misguided." (Surat al-Anbiya: 52-54)
Clearl0( it is a great mista*e to suggest that matter is conscious and( as a result(
ascribe consciousness to material things/ Atoms( molecules( mudd0 #ater( and

The Wish to Burn the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
Angered that their idols had been smashed( the pagans decided to ta*e their re!enge

In another !erse( Allah re!eals their hostilit0( as follo#s=
The only answer of his Abraham's] tribe was to say: "Kill him or burn him!"
But Allah rescued him from the fire. There are certainly signs in that for people who

Although the0 could clearl0 see the proofs of Allah's e>istence( their great anger
dro!e them to thro# the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) into the fire/ This is an important
e>ample of their hatred and intolerance of Allah's prophets and belie!ers/ In fact( in the

Planned Behavior and Sequential Thinking
As #e ha!e sho#n abo!e( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) used se!eral plans and
methods b0 Allah's inspiration #hen calling his tribe to belief in Allah/ )ne method #as
to consider the li*el0 dangers and reactions in order to prepare effecti!e precautions/
Allah re!eals in the 7ur'an that %e supported all prophets( ga!e them superior #isdom and
understanding( and enabled them( through di!ine inspiration( to function as ser!ants #ho
too* the most rational and effecti!e precautions and #ho possessed great foresight/ The
Prophet Abraham (pbuh) had all of these superior characteristics in the most perfect form/
Thus( he fulfilled his Bod$gi!en responsibilit0 in the best possible manner and did his best
to call his tribe to the truth/
The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) tribe( #hich #as Duite numerous( threatened him
#ith mart0rdom( stoning( and e>ile/ %o#e!er( he sought to *eep his distance from them
b0 telling them that he #as ill as Allah re!eals in the !erses=
And Abraham] asked his father and his tribe: "What are you worshipping? Is
it falsehood-deities besides Allah-that you desire? So, what are your thoughts
about the Lord of all the worlds?" He looked at the stars and said: "I am sick." So
they turned their backs on him. (Surat as-Saffat: 85-90)
This method reflects a most #ise and rational attitude( for his tribe left him alone
out of fear that the0 themsel!es might become ill/ Ieft alone( he gained enough time to
smash the idols/ This cle!er plan( designed to free his tribe from the sin of ascribing
partners to Allah( is one of the finest e>amples of acting based upon his lo!e for and fear

In the 7ur'an( there are other e>amples of portraying something as flawed and thus
escaping the clutches of the cruel( such as Ghidr (pbuh)( #ho tra!eled #ith the Prophet
Moses (pbuh) for a short time/ The !erses read=
They continued until they boarded a boat, and he Khidr] caused it to sink.
Then Moses said: "Did you cause it to sink so that its owners would be drowned?
This is truly a dreadful thing that you have done!" (Surat al-Kahf: 71)
Khidr said to Moses:] "As for the boat, it belonged to some poor people who
worked on the sea. I wanted to damage it because a king was coming behind them,
commandeering every boat." (Surat al-Kahf: 79)
Ghidr (pbuh) #as chosen b0 Allah and gi!en special *no#ledge through Allah's

emerged=
He said: "No, this one, the largest of them, did it. Ask them, if they are able to

This repl0 confronted the pagans( #ho belie!ed the nonsense that their idols

Another element of the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) method #as to undermine his

#isdom( superior understanding( and the po#er of effecti!e communication( all of #hich

The Angels Allah Sent to the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
)ne of Allah's greatest blessings to the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) #as to support him
#ith angels/ According to the 7ur'an t#o angels came to the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) in
human guise and sta0ed in his house=
Has the story reached you of the honored guests of Abraham? When they
entered his dwelling and said: "Peace," he replied: "Peace, to people we do not
know." (Surat adh-Dhariyat: 24-25)
Our angels brought the good news to Abraham. They said: "Peace," and he
too said: "Peace" and brought in a roasted calf without delay. (Surah Hud: 69)
As #e see( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) realiAed immediatel0 that these guests #ere
not ordinar0 guests/ %e sho#ed a superior hospitalit0 to them( although he had ne!er seen
before( and immediatel0 offered them pleasant refreshments/ 1uch an act s0mboliAes his
superior moral !alues/ And( offering such refreshments before his un*no#n guests made
an0 reDuests is an e>ample of the fine thin*ing that Muslims need to adopt/ Another
model #orth0 of adoption is the #a0 he prepared the refreshments #ithout gi!ing an0
indication that he #as doing so=
So he slipped off to his household and brought a fattened calf. He offered it to
them and then exclaimed: "Do you not then eat?" (Surat adh-Dhariyat: 26-27)
The Prophet Abraham (pbuh) did not as* his guests #hether the0 #ere hungr0 or
tell them that he had made an0 preparations/ This is the height of good manners( for a
guest ma0 feel sh0 to reDuest some refreshments( and his or her self$respect ma0 pre!ent
such a reDuest from being made/ The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) handling of this situation
indicates his respect for and interest in his guests/
%e offered them a roasted( fattened calf( #hich people of that time considered to be
a most pleasing and delicious meal/ %is reDuest that the0 eat is one of the finest e>amples
of his superior moralit0 and thought/
The Angels' Glad Tidings
%o#e!er( his guests did not eat the food placed before them( because=
When he saw that their hands were not reaching for it, he suspected them and
felt afraid of them. They said: "Have no fear. We have been sent to the tribe of Lot."
(Surah Hud: 70)
The #a0 that his guests declined to eat( e!en though he had treated them !er0
#arml0 and offered them food( sho#ed the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) that something
e>traordinar0 #as happening/ These angels( #ho came to him in human guise( displa0ed a
most noble and blameless moralit0/ Indeed( he treated them #ith such enormous
hospitalit0 because he realiAed that the0 #ere most #orth0 guests/ The angels then
re!ealed their true identities and ga!e him the glad tidings of a righteous son=
When they came in to him, they said: "Peace." He replied: "Truly we are
afraid of you." They said: "Do not be afraid. We bring you the good news of a boy of
great knowledge." (Surat al-Hijr: 52-53)
The Prophet Abraham (pbuh) and his #ife #ere astonished( for both of them #ere
Duite old/ In addition( his #ife #as barren/ The Prophet Abraham (pbuh) replied #ith the
follo#ing #ords=
He asked: "Do you bring me this good news despite the fact of old age having
reached me? What kind of good news are you bringing me?" They said: "We bring
you good news of the truth, so do not be among those who despair." (Surat al-Hijr:
54-55)
His wife was standing there, and she laughed out loud. So We gave her the
good news of Isaac, and beyond Isaac, 1acob. She exclaimed: "Woe is me! How can I
give birth when I am an old woman and my husband is an aged man? This is indeed
an astonishing thing!" (Surah Hud: 71-72)
This #as ne#s of a great miracle/ In response to his #ife's Duestion( #e read in the
!erse( ;The0 said= 'That is #hat 0our Iord sa0s/ %e is the All$Eise( the All$Gno#ing';
(1urat adh$Dhari0at= 43)/ As Allah re!ealed in another !erse( the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)
and his #ife #ere told not to be astonished=
They said: "Are you astonished at Allah's command? May Allah's mercy and
His blessings be upon you, People of the House. He is Praiseworthy, All-Glorious."
(Surah Hud: 73)
The angels also reminded the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) of something else=
They said to Abraham]: "We bring you good news of the truth, so do not be

Iosing faith in Allah is a spiritual state pre!alent among people #ho li!e far

Other News Brought by the Angels
The first ne#s the angels brought to the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) is the glad tidings
of a son/ The angels then informed the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) that Prophet Iot's (pbuh)
tribe #ould soon be destro0ed because of their homose>ual lifest0le/ (This #ill be
discussed in greater detail later on/) Allah states in the 7ur'an=
He Abraham] inquired: "What, then, is your business, O emissaries from
Allah?" They said: "We have been sent to a tribe of evildoers to unleash upon them
lumps of clay earmarked by your Lord for the profligate." (Surat adh-Dhariyat: 32-
34)
Allah also gi!es more details about this con!ersation in other passages/ 8or
e>ample=
When Our emissaries came with the good news to Abraham, they said: "We
are going to destroy the people of this city. Truly its inhabitants are wrongdoers." He
said: "Lot is in it." They said: "We know very well who is in it. We are going to
rescue him and his family-except for his wife. She will be one of those who stay
behind." (Surat al-Ankabut: 31-32)
When the feeling of fear left Abraham and the good news reached him, he
disputed with Us about the tribe of Lot. Abraham was forbearing, compassionate,
and penitent. "Abraham, turn away from this! Your Lord's command has come. A
punishment is coming to them that cannot be repelled." (Surah Hud: 76)
They said: "We have been sent to a people who are evildoers-with the
exception of the family of Lot, all of whom We will save, except for his wife. We have
decreed her to be one of those who stay behind." (Surat al-Hijr: 58-60)
Allah re!eals in the 7ur'an that %e #ill ne!er destro0 a societ0 that contains
belie!ers/ 8or that reason( the angels told the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) and the Prophet
Iot (pbuh) to lea!e the region/
The Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) Sons: Prophet Ishmael
(pbuh) and Prophet Isaac (pbuh)
The angels told the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) that Allah had accepted his pra0er for
a righteous child=
"My Lord, bestow on me a righteous child!" (Surat as-Saffat: 100)
The Prophet Abraham (pbuh) did not as* Allah for a child from his o#n line

*eep the religion ali!e after his death/ The fact that he #as not e>pecting a son can be seen

fact of old age ha!ing reached meL Ehat *ind of good ne#s are 0ou bringing meL; (1urat
al$%i<r= -5)/ %o#e!er( Allah #illed to create a righteous line of descent for the Prophet
Abraham (pbuh)( and so made his elderl0 and barren #ife fertile/ As #e stated earlier( %e
sent angels to inform the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) and his #ife of this miracle=
And We gave him the good news of a forbearing boy. (Surat as-Saffat: 101)
This e>ample also applies to Prophet Fachariah (pbuh)( one of the Prophet
Abraham's (pbuh) descendants/ In the 7ur'an Allah informs us of the Prophet Fachariah's
(pbuh) pra0er and of his being gi!en the glad tidings that his #ife #ill bear a righteous
son=
Remembering your Lord's mercy to His servant Zachariah, when he called on
his Lord in secret and said: "My Lord, my bones have lost their strength and my
head is crowned with white, but in calling on You, my Lord, I have never been
disappointed. I fear my relatives when I am gone and my wife is barren, so give me
an heir from You to be my inheritor and the inheritor of the family of 1acob. And
make him, my Lord, pleasing to You." "O Zachariah. We give you the good news of
a boy named 1ohn, a name we have given to no one else before." He asked: "My
Lord! How can I father a son when my wife is barren and I have reached advanced
old age?" He Allah] replied: "It will be so. Your Lord says: 'That is easy for me to
do. I created you before, when you were nothing.'" (Surah Maryam: 2-9)
Ii*e the Prophet Abraham (pbuh)( Prophet Fachariah (pbuh) as*ed for a de!out

We purified their sincerity through sincere remembrance of the abode. In Our

And in addition to that, We gave him Abraham] Isaac and 1acob and made

worshipped Us. (Surat al-Anbiya: 72-73)
We gave him Abraham] the good news of Isaac, a Prophet, one of the

Allah praises in the 7ur'an that the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) for turning to Allah in

Abraham's (pbuh) submissi!e attitude in the face of all troubles and difficulties is an

"Our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring by Your Sacred House in an
uncultivated valley. Our Lord, let them perform prayer. Make the hearts of
humanity incline toward them and provide them with fruits, so that, hopefully, they
will be thankful." (Surah Ibrahim: 37)
Allah describes the great blessing %e has placed on the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh)
descendents in the follo#ing terms=
"Accordingly, your Lord will pick you out and teach you the true meaning of
events and perfectly fulfill His blessing on you, as well as on the family of 1acob, just
as He fulfilled it perfectly before upon your forebears Abraham and Isaac. Most
certainly, your Lord is Knowing, Wise." (Surah Yusuf: 6)
In other !erses( Allah re!eals the follo#ing information about this blessed line=
We gave him Abraham] Isaac and 1acob, and placed prophethood and the
Book among his progeny. We gave him his reward in this world, and in the Hereafter
he will be among the righteous. (Surat al-Ankabut: 27)
And remember Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and 1acob, men of true strength
and inner sight. We purified their sincerity through sincere remembrance of the
abode. In Our eyes, they are among the best of chosen men. (Surah Sad: 45-47)
When he Abraham] separated himself from them and what they worshipped
besides Allah, We gave him Isaac and 1acob, making each of them a prophet. We
endowed them with Our mercy and made them highly honored. (Surah Maryam: 49-

)ur Iord further informs us that %e has made the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) famil0

Allah chose Adam and Noah, as well as the family of Abraham and the family

Or do they, in fact, envy other people for the bounty Allah has granted them?
We gave the family of Abraham the Book and wisdom, and We gave them an
immense kingdom. (Surat an-Nisa: 54)
"Those who believe and do not mix up their faith with any wrongdoing, they
are the ones who are safe; it is they who are guided." This is the argument We gave
to Abraham against his tribe. We raise in rank anyone We will. Your Lord is All-

THE DECEPTION OF EVOLUTION
Dar#inism( in other #ords the theor0 of e!olution( #as put for#ard #ith the aim of

theory, which claims that life emerged by chance from inanimate matter, was

living things, as well as by the discovery of about 300 million fossils revealing that

the universe and the living things in it. The propaganda carried out today in order to
keep the theory of evolution alive is based solely on the distortion of the scientific

The theor0 of e!olution posits that all li!ing species e!ol!ed from a single li!ing
cell that emerged on the primiti!e arth 4/2 billion 0ears ago/ %o# a single cell could
generate millions of comple> li!ing species and( if such an e!olution reall0 occurred( #h0

theor0 cannot ans#er/ %o#e!er( first and foremost( #e need to as*= How did this "first

Since the theory of evolution ignorantly denies Creation, it maintains that the
"first cell" originated as a product of blind coincidences within the laws of nature,

The Compl ex St ruct ure of Li f e
The primar0 reason #h0 the theor0 of e!olution ended up in such a great impasse
regarding the origin of life is that e!en those li!ing organisms deemed to be the simplest
ha!e outstandingl0 comple> structures/ The cell of a li!ing thing is more comple> than all
of our man$made technological products/ Today, even in the most developed
laboratories of the world, a living cell cannot be produced by bringing organic
chemicals together.
The conditions reDuired for the formation of a cell are too great in Duantit0 to be
e>plained a#a0 b0 coincidences/ The probability of proteins, the building blocks of a
cell, being synthesized coincidentally, is 1 in 10

for an average protein made up of
500 amino acids. In mathematics, a probability smaller than 1 over 10

is considered
to be impossible in practical terms.

It is extremely improbable that proteins and nucleic acids, both of which are

The second important point that negates Dar#in's theor0 is that both concepts put
for#ard b0 the theor0 as ;e!olutionar0 mechanisms; #ere understood to ha!e( in realit0(
no e!olutionar0 po#er/
Dar#in based his e!olution allegation entirel0 on the mechanism of ;natural

Dar#in also ga!e similar e>amples/ In his boo* %he 9rigin of 'pecies( for instance(

Thus( natural selection fell out of fa!or as an e!olutionar0 mechanism/

there is an outright scientific fact that totall0 undermines this theor0= Mutations do not

random effects can only harm it. The American geneticist @/ B/ Ranganathan e>plains
this as follo#s=
8irst( genuine mutations are !er0 rare in nature/ 1econdl0( most mutations are harmful since

The sub<ect most often brought up b0 ad!ocates of the theor0 of e!olution is the
sub<ect of the origin of man/ The Dar#inist claim holds that man e!ol!ed from so$called
ape$li*e creatures/ During this alleged e!olutionar0 process( #hich is supposed to ha!e
started 5$- million 0ears ago( some ;transitional forms; bet#een present$da0 man and his

scenario( four basic ;categories; are listed=
1. Australopithecus

H. Homo sapiens
!olutionists call man's so$called first ape$li*e ancestors Australopithecus( #hich

!olutionists classif0 the ne>t stage of human e!olution as ;homo(; that is ;man/;
According to their claim( the li!ing beings in the %omo series are more de!eloped than
Australopithecus/ !olutionists de!ise a fanciful e!olution scheme b0 arranging different

Signs from the Story of the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) for the Present Day
In the verse, "Fire, be coolness and peace for Abraham" (Surat al-Anbiya: 69), Allah
reveals that the fire did not harm the Prophet Abraham (pbuh). As a result, the
pagans' snares were neutralized and they could not harm him. This verse also
contains an important indication for the present day. (Allah knows the truth.)
As we know, all kinds of fabrics and materials are now produced by high technology.
Among them are fire-proof clothing and vehicles. For instance, fire-resistant clothes
protect their wearers against fire, flames, and other effects of burning, for they catch
fire less easily, burn slower, and put themselves out when the flame or the fire's
source is removed. Such clothing gives people more time to remove their burning
clothes or extinguish the blames.
Fabrics made from glass, aramid, novoloid, sulphur, and saran fibers do not catch
fire and resist very high temperatures. These fabrics are the result of different fibers
joined together, through a series of tests, to protect the wearer against fire. Shirts,
pants, jackets, sweaters, shoes, gloves, socks, and headgear designed from such fire-
resistant materials are used by workers in oil refineries, chemical substance
producing plants, electricity and natural gas facilities, steel and aluminum factories,
welding plants, the air and space industry, the construction industry, and emergency
and fire-fighting personnel. (American Firewear Product Specifications;
http://www.firewear.com/spcgide.htm)
The above verse may be pointing to this major scientific development, which will
emerge during the End Times, and indicating the production of these fire-resistant
fabrics and materials. (Allah knows the truth.)

Urfa appears in historical sources as the region in which the Prophet Adam (pbuh),
the Prophet Abraham (pbuh), the Prophet 1ob (pbuh), the Prophet Shu`ayb (pbuh),
and the Prophet Elisha (pbuh) all lived. According to various accounts, an important
part of the Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) life was spent in Urfa. The Gospel's Book of
Acts indicates that the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) lived in Haran.
To this, he replied: Men, brothers, and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared
to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran
