NOTE: Before presenting this lesson, instructors must thoroughly prepare by studying this lesson and identified reference material.

ALERT: CONDUCT A RISK ASSESSMENT PRIOR TO START OF TRAINING. Particular attention must be given to Army core values (ACVs) identified within the lesson. Instructors must be role models and mentors to help Soldiers assimilate ACVs by briefly noting the values and associated behaviors applicable to the training. Reinforced Values: Duty.

ORGANIZATION FOR TRAINING: Prior to Soldier arrival: Primary Instructor (PI): 1. Brief Group Instructors on how this lesson will be conducted. 2. Ensure the following guidelines are met:: a. All Vehicle Commanders must be NVG Qualified IAW AR 600-55, FK Reg 385-22 and TC 21-305-22 Chapter 4, dated 4 Sep 98. b. All Vehicle Commanders must meet the requirements to use AN/PVS-7Bs as prescribed in TC 21-305-22, Chapter 4. c. IET Soldiers that are not licensed IAW FK Reg 385-22 will not drive on Range Roads at any time. d. A Ground Guide will be placed at the AVLB crossing throughout the duration of this LP. 3. The NVG Qualification must be noted on their SF 348 and military drivers license. 4. Instruct the Group Instructors to set the Training Site as follows: a. Park the vehicles in sets of two close enough together so a set of Slave cables can be used. b.Place one set of Slave Cables on the hood of one of the vehicles per set. c. Place 2 sets of AN/PVS-7B NVGs on the TC seat of each HMMWV. 5. Emplace the ground guide at the AVLB crossings and give them the following instructions: a.During daylight operations. Gain control of the vehicle as it approaches and guide it across using the proper hand and arm signals.

c.During night operations. Gain control of the vehicle as it approaches and guide it across using a red lens flashlight. Group Instructors (GI): 1. Set the training site IAW the PIs instructions. 2. Perform before operations PMCS, ensuring the vehicle is operational and that all safety standards are met. 3. Perform before operations PMCS on each set of Slave Cables. 4. Perform before operations PMCS on both sets of AN/PVS-7B for his vehicle. After Soldier arrival: Primary Instructor: 1. Conduct the safety briefing and introduction as a group, 2. After the introduction, organize the soldiers into groups of three and assign a Group Instructor to each group. 3. Monitor the training and assist the Group Instructors as needed. 4. Once 6 Soldiers have successfully negotiated the course, gather them together and select a TC as a Convoy Commander (CC). Give the Convoy Brief to the group and supervise the CC as needed. 5.The Convoy Brief will include as a minimum: a.Speed of no more than 20 MPH, with a catch up speed of 25. b.Distance between vehicles. Group Instructors: 1. Take the groups to their vehicles and reinforce the safety briefing and rollover procedures using GTA-55-03-030. 2. Start the training by having the Soldiers perform before operations PMCS as a crew. 3. After the third Soldier has driven your vehicle, have the Soldiers conduct During Operations PMCS as a crew. 4.Have the Soldiers conduct the Convoy and follow the designated Convoy Route.

Motivator

As a Cavalry Scout, you may be assigned to a HMMWV equipped scout platoon. If so, one of your duties will be to drive the HMMWV. Driving a HMMWV in todays environment requires a Soldier to think and adapt. Our enemy can attack utilizing multiple means from direct contact with small arms fire and anti-tank systems to improvised explosive devices placed in inconspicuous locations. You may be required to drive a HMMWV on both paved roads and across terrain. As a skilled driver you will allow your crew the ability to perform actions against an enemy that is determined in destroying you, your crew, and your vehicle.

Terminal Learning Objective

Drive a HMMWV Provided with a HMMWV with operational checks completed, Protective mask and a driving course that provide daylight and darkness driving. Using the procedures in the vehicle operators manual and complying with the instructions of the vehicle commander you must: 1. Start the vehicle using primary power. 2. Slave start the vehicle. 3. Negotiate the driving course unmasked during daylight for 10 minutes and 5 minutes wearing the protective mask. 4. Negotiate the driving course during darkness for 10 minutes.

Standards:

Safety Requirements

1. Tell Soldiers to remove rings, watches, bracelets, and chains before working on the vehicle. Jewelry can catch on equipment and cause injury or may short across an electrical circuit, resulting in burns or electrical shock. 2. Never move the vehicle in an assembly area or other congested area without a ground guide. 3. 4. 5. Do not leave the drivers station when the engine is running. Do not walk between vehicles with the engines running. Wear your seat belt properly whenever the vehicle is moving.

6. Make sure all mirrors are adjusted so you have a clear view around the sides of your vehicle. 7. Follow all CAUTIONS, WARNINGS and NOTES listed in the operators manuals.

8. Never operate any vehicle without a qualified, licensed driver and vehicle commander or if the vehicle does not meet the vehicle safety standards per system PMCS tables, section II of AR 385-55, or local SOP. 9. During operation/movement, operators, crewmembers, and passengers must wear appropriate personal protection equipment. Hearing protection (helmet and earplugs) will be worn at all times, by all crewmembers while vehicles are being operated. 10. Distance between vehicles for this lesson: a. Normal visibility - 50 meters. b. Degraded visibility - 100 meters (more if required). 11. Rollover procedures: a. All crew members will keep arms, elbows and head inside of vehicle when it is moving. First Soldier to notice vehicle beginning to rollover shouts"ROLLOVER!" b. Driver: Release accelerator. Keep hands on the steering wheel with extended but not locked arms, tucks head and chin and braces for impact. Yell "ROLLOVER!" Hang on, wait to vehicle comes to a complete rest, turn engine off, unfasten seat belt, checks for injuries, ID evacuation route. Retrieves fire extinguisher, exit vehicle on the up hill side of vehicle if possible. Check for fire and fuel leaks or spills, attempt to contain fire and spills. Account for occupants and sensitive items. Seek medical help and radio for help. c. Rear seat passengers: Tucks head and chin and braces for impact. Plant feet firmly on the floor while holding on to a stationary object yell "ROLLOVER!" Hang on, wait for vehicle to come to a complete stop, unfasten seatbelt, check for injuries, exit vehicle from the up hill side of vehicle if possible. Account for personnel and sensitive items. Seek medical attention and assist driver. d. Observer: If riding in the observers hatch, get inside vehicle tuck head and chin, plant feet firmly on the floor while holding on to a stationary object yell "ROLLOVER!" and braces for impact. Wait for vehicle to come to a complete stop, exit vehicle from the up hill side of vehicle if possible. Assist driver. WARNING: NEVER ATTEMPT TO JUMP FROM A ROLLING VEHICLE. 12. A qualified, permanent party, Cadre will be the Ground Guide to be used during the AVLB Crossing. Follow the hand and arms signals from the ground guide. Once the Ground Guide assumes control of the vehicle, take all commands from the Ground Guide.
Risk Assessment Level Environmental Considerations

NOTE: It is the responsibility of all Soldiers and DA civilians to protect the environment from damage.

Stationary vehicles must have drip pans placed underneath to prevent any possible leaks into the ground. In the event of an accidental spill of hydraulic fluid,

fuels, oils, solvents, acids, or coolants, action must be taken to contain and clean it up immediately. Floor dry sweep material is the most effective material to contain and clean up spills. The Soldiers will report the incident to the instructor immediately; the instructor will direct appropriate clean-up action. The instructor will then report the incident IAW local school SOP.
Evaluation

You will be evaluated on this task during the practical exercise using the Training Site Certification Checklist provided in Appendix C of this lesson plan. You will be evaluated on driving a HMMWV off-road during the STX. Once the briefing is completed you will be organize into groups of three Soldiers each and assigned to a Group Instructor. Your Group Instructor will then move you to the vehicles to explain and demonstrate the correct procedures for start/slave start the HMMWV, driving it during daylight on roads and cross country, driving it in a contaminated area, and driving the vehicle at night under blackout conditions and while wearing night vision devices. After the explanation and demonstration, your Group Instructor will talk each of you through the procedures to start and drive the HMMWV. Your ability to start/slave start and drive the HMMWV will be evaluated during the practical exercise.

SECTION III.

PRESENTATION

NOTE: Prior to beginning instruction, have the Soldiers perform before operations PMCS as a crew. Emphasize that drivers must always perform before operations PMCS prior to operating the vehicle. 1. Fuel conservation. a. Accelerate as slowly as possible. b. Maintain a steady and constant speed. NOTE: Inform the Soldiers that for training purposes they will not exceed 20 mph on the course. c. Do not leave the engine idling for extended periods of time. d. Perform all services in a timely manner. e. Keep air flow as clear as possible. f. Keep oil at proper levels and lube frequently.

g. Ensure clean fuel is used. h. Areas of concern for fuel efficient driving: (1) Engine speed and temperature (2) Engine load. (3) Engine idle time. NOTE: Position yourself in the driver's seat and conduct explanation and demonstration IAW the vehicle operator's manual. Emphasize all applicable warnings, cautions, and notes. Emphasize the importance of wearing the seat belt at all times while operating or riding in the vehicle. Explain the proper wear of the 2-point and 3-point seat belts. Remind Soldiers of the requirement to wear head and hearing protection when operating or riding in the HMMWV. 2. Start the HMMWV using primary (vehicle) power.

WARNING: For M1097 and all A1 and A2 model vehicles only, hearing protection is required for driver and passengers when engine is running. Noise levels produced by these vehicles exceed 85 dBA, which may cause injury to personnel a. Apply the parking brake.

b. Adjust the driver's seat. NOTE: Emphasize that the engine must not be running when adjusting the driver's seat. c. Adjust left and right side view mirrors. d. Ensure windows are clear. e. Fasten and adjust seat belts. WARNING: Ensure all slack from two-point seatbelt adjusting strap or three-point seatbelt is removed. Two-point seatbelt retracts but does not lock in any position. Three-point seatbelt retracts and will lock only during sudden stops or impact. Injury to personnel will result if an accident occurs and seatbelt is not used or adjusted properly. (1) Fasten unused seatbelts to protect the belt ends from damage or dirt contamination. f. Place transmission shift lever to Neutral position and transfer case shift lever in appropriate range. NOTE: Explain the range positions available for the transfer case shift lever and inform the Soldiers that the transfer case shift lever will be set to "H" (high) range throughout this training. WARNING: The automatic transmissions on M998 and "A1" vehicles do not have a "PARK" position. Whenever the vehicle is parked or the transmission is in "NEUTRAL", the parking brake MUST BE APPLIED. Damage to equipment and injury to personnel may occur if these instructions are not followed. The automatic transmissions on the "A2" vehicles have a 'PARK" position. Never use the transmission shift lever in place of the parking brake. Set the parking brake. Make sure the transmission shift lever is in the "P" (park) position and transfer case shift lever is NOT in the N" (neutral) position. Damage to equipment and injury to personnel may occur if these instructions are not followed. WARNING: Chock blocks will be used when parking a vehicle with inoperative parking brakes, when operating in extreme cold conditions, when parking on inclines, or whenever and wherever maintenance is being performed. Failure to do so may result in injury to personnel or damage to equipment. g. Place rotary switch to "RUN" and wait until the "WAIT TO START" light goes out. CAUTION: Do not leave rotary switch in "RUN" once WAIT-TO-START lamp assembly goes out. Batteries will continue to discharge and lead to a no-start condition. Continued attempts to start the vehicle with low batteries could lead to failure of the glow plug system. CAUTION: Glare from the sun may make it difficult to tell if the wait-to-start lamp assembly is illuminated. If this occurs, shade the light with your hands to ensure that the wait-to-start lamp assembly goes out before attempting to start the vehicle. CAUTION: Starting the engine before the wait-to-start lamp goes out can result in starting problems.

h. Place rotary switch to START. Release lever after engine starts. Lever will return automatically to RUN" CAUTION: If ambient temperature is above 0F (-18C), do not operate starter continuously for more than 20 seconds; wait 10 to 15 seconds between periods of starter operation. Failure to do this will result in damage to the starter. CAUTION: If any instrument reading is not normal, stop engine. Failure to do this will result in damage to the engine. Refer to the troubleshooting table in the operator's manual. CAUTION: If engine does not start, leave rotary switch in "RUN" position and wait 10 to 15 seconds before trying to restart. Failure to do this will result in damage to glow plugs or starter. CAUTION: If you accidentally turn the rotary switch to "ENG STOP" position after an unsuccessful attempt to start, wait 90 seconds before trying to restart. Failure to do this will result in damage to glow plugs. NOTE: Before the engine reaches operating temperature, the WAIT-TO-START lamp may flicker and a clicking noise may be heard. This is due to glow plug relay cycling and is a normal condition. i. Allow engine to warm up for approximately one minute and ensure instruments indicate the following: (1) Oil pressure gauge should register above approximately 6 psi with engine at idle. (2) Voltmeter should register in green area. (3) Fuel gauge should indicate fuel level in fuel tank. (4) Air restriction gauge should not register within the red zone. j. Stop engine if any of the following conditions occur: (1) Excessive engine vibration. (2) Oil pressure does not register or suddenly drops to or less than approximately 6 psi with engine at idle. (3) Air restriction gauge is within the red zone. CAUTION: Stop engine if coolant temperature gauge suddenly increases beyond approximately 230F (110C), or damage to engine will result. k. If engine overheating occurs: (1) Park vehicle, allow engine to idle. (2) Observe coolant temperature gauge for steady cooling.

(3) If engine coolant temperature continues to increase, or does not decrease, as indicated by engine temperature gauge, stop engine and perform troubleshooting procedures. NOTE: Explain how to stop vehicle and engine. Stop engine before conducting training vehicle light control. 3. Stopping the vehicle and engine. a. Release accelerator pedal b. Depress service brake pedal to bring vehicle to a gradual stop. NOTE: The automatic transmission of "A2" series vehicles has a PARK position. Proceed to steps f and g for "A2" series vehicles. c. Move transmission shift lever to "N" (neutral). d. If vehicle must be backed into parking position, have another person act as a ground guide to direct reverse operation. NOTE: Remind Soldiers of TM warnings about the transmission neutral and park positions and about the use of chock blocks. e. Once vehicle is completely stopped, apply parking brake lever. NOTE: Some vehicles have parking brake levers that do not lock. If equipped with a chain lock, secure parking brake lever with the chain lock to prevent accidental release of the parking brake. If not equipped, refer to unit maintenance for installation procedures. NOTE: Steps f and g apply to "A2 series vehicles only. f. Once vehicle is completely stopped, apply parking brake lever.

g. Move transmission shift lever to "P (park). h. Turn light switch to "OFF" i. Place rotary switch to "ENG STOP. If there is engine run-on, pinch the fuel return line with your fingers or a pair of pliers to stop the engine. Notify unit maintenance. j. 4. Lock steering wheel with cable and chock wheels if tactical situation permits.

Operation of vehicle light control. a. To illuminate instrument panel: (1) Lift unlock lever to UNLOCK and hold in position. (2) Turn selector switch lever to any "ON" position except "B.O. MARKER. (3) Turn auxiliary lever to "DIM" or "PANEL BRT" (bright).

NOTE: Explain to the Soldiers that the panel lights are kept off or dim during tactical operations. b. For normal daylight driving, turn selector lever to "STOPLIGHT." c. For night driving, turn selector lever to "SERVICE DRIVE." The headlight dimmer foot switch is depressed to provide high beam service light operation. The indicator light on the instrument panel should illuminate when high beams are operating. d. In blackout operations: (1) When driving vehicle, turn selector lever to "B.O. DRIVE." or "B.O. MARKER" as needed or as directed for the tactical situation. (2) When vehicle is parked, turn selector lever to "B.O. MARKER." e. To illuminate parked vehicle at night (if situation requires parking lights): (1) Keep selector lever in "SERVICE DRIVE." (2) Turn auxiliary lever to "PARK. This will turn off the headlights while the parking lights are lit. The headlights cannot be turned on when auxiliary lever is in the "PARK" position. f. Move turn signal lever up for right turns, down for left turns.

g. For hazard warning lights (blinking lights): (1) Turn selector lever (1) to "SERVICE DRIVE" or "STOPLIGHT." (2) Pull warning hazard tab out and move turn signal lever up to lock lever in place. (3) To deactivate, move turn signal lever back to neutral. WARNING: When activated, the warning flashers override operation of the brake lights. h. For horn operation, turn selector lever to either "STOPLIGHT" or "SERVICE DRIVE." 5. SLAVE STARTING OPERATION.

WARNING: Ensure all battery cables in disabled vehicle are properly connected before connecting slave cable. Damage to batteries, cables, or serious injury to personnel may result from improperly connected batteries. a. Position slaving vehicle and disabled vehicle close enough for cable hookup. b. Stop slaving vehicle engine. Ensure all electrical switches in both vehicles are turned off. c. Remove cover from slave receptacle of disabled vehicle and slaving vehicle. d. Connect slave cable to the slave receptacle of both vehicles.

CAUTION: Use a twisting motion when installing slave cable to the receptacle. Forcefully pushing the cable onto the receptacle may cause damage to the receptacle mount. e. Start slaving vehicle engine. f. Start disabled vehicle engine.

g. After engine starts, disconnect slave cable from both vehicles. CAUTION: Use a twisting motion when disconnecting slave cable from the receptacle. Forcefully pulling the cable from the receptacle may cause damage to the receptacle mount. h. Install receptacle covers on both vehicles. (1) Screw-on type covers must be fully tightened to ensure a proper seal. (2) For ease of removal, apply hand cleaner NSN 8520-00-965-2109 on the inside of the cover before installing receptacle covers. i. Clean and stow slave cable.

NOTE: Prior to beginning instruction, reinforce the Safety Brief and update the risk assessment as needed. The Safety Brief will include, at a minimum: Roadmarch and catch-up speeds. Distance between vehicles. Actions at a halt. 1. Roadmarch speeds: This is the required speed all vehicles will keep throughout the roadmarch, unless falling behind. 2. Catch-up Speed: This is the maximum speed to be used to catch-up to a convoy, if falling back, or to link-up with a convoy, if joining on the move. 3. Vehicle spacing: This is the distance between vehicles in column. The reason for the distance is for several reasons: a. Allow for safe breaking distance. b. Ensure maximum coverage with crew-served weapons. c. Ensure that, if ambushed or attacked, only a minimum number of vehicles are caught in the Kill-Zone. The distance will allow for vehicles to react to, and back out of, an attack, go around disabled vehicles, and provide cover and/or concealment for vehicles and personnel.

You will also drive in a convoy negotiating obstacles along the course. As a Cavalry Scout, you may be assigned to a HMMWV equipped Scout Platoon. If so, one of your duties will be to drive the HMMWV. Driving a HMMWV in todays environment requires a Soldier to think and adapt. Our enemy can attack utilizing multiple means from direct contact with small arms fire and anti-tank systems to improvised explosive devices placed in inconspicuous locations. You may be required to drive a HMMWV on both paved roads and across terrain. As a skilled driver you will allow your crew the ability to perform actions against an enemy that is determined in destroying you, your crew, and your vehicle.

Negotiate the driving course unmasked during daylight for 10 minutes and 5 minutes wearing the protective mask. 4. Negotiate the driving course during darkness for 10 minutes.

Safety Requirements

1. Tell Soldiers to remove rings, watches, bracelets, and chains before working on the vehicle. Jewelry can catch on equipment and cause injury or may short across an electrical circuit, resulting in burns or electrical shock. 2. Never move the vehicle in an assembly area or other congested area without a ground guide. 3. 4. 5. 6. Do not leave the drivers station when the engine is running. Stationary vehicles must have drip pans placed underneath to prevent any possible leaks into the ground. In the event of an accidental spill of hydraulic fluid, fuels, oils, solvents, acids, or coolants, action must be taken to contain and clean it up immediately. Floor dry sweep material is the most effective material to contain and clean up spills. The Soldiers will report the incident to the instructor immediately; the instructor will direct appropriate clean-up action. The instructor will then report the incident IAW local school SOP. Fasten and adjust your seat belt before allowing the driver to start the engine. 8. Begin the day driving course with Soldier 1 driving. The driver will accomplish the following tasks while driving: a. Lap 1: Drive around the course road at normal speed. (1) Drive the vehicle around a right turn, a left turn, and negotiate a hill. (2) Negotiate a series of tight turns. NOTE: The turns may be setup using orange cones if available, or the VC can direct the driver to turn the vehicle as if traveling through trees from the VCs seat. (3) Drive the vehicle in reverse in a straight line without a ground guide. NOTE: For this exercise, the VC will stand in the gunners hatch and direct the driver to drive and stop in reverse. b. Lap 2: Drive around the course at normal speed and negotiate an obstacle. (1) Drive the vehicle around a right turn, a left turn, and negotiate a hill. (2) Drive the vehicle in reverse, while turning, without a ground guide. NOTE: For this exercise, the VC will stand in the gunners hatch and direct the driver to turn the vehicle as if traveling through trees. (3) Cross the AVLB bridge. (a) Approach the bridge site slowly, stop short of the bridge or when signaled to do so by the ground guide. (b) Follow the ground guides Hand and Arm signals until told to continue down the course road and you have successfully crossed the bridge. WARNING: If at any time any wheel comes off the bridge, immediately stop the vehicle, set all brakes, turn off the engine, and call for assistance. Have Soldier 3 move to the passenger seat behind the driver. Have Soldier 1 occupy the passenger seat behind the vehicle commander. Make sure all Soldiers put on and properly adjust their seat belts before you assume your position as vehicle commander. Fasten and adjust your seat belt before allowing the driver to start the engine. Repeat the process with Soldier 2 driving. When Soldier 2 has completed the required laps, rotate the Soldiers again to have Soldier 3 drive. d. Evaluate each Soldier IAW the Training Site Certification Checklist (TSCC). Complete a TSCC for any Soldier who does not meet task standards. Conduct a brief after actions review after all three Soldiers have completed the day driving course. 9. Once all 3 Soldiers have successfully completed the course, link-up with the PI for the Convoy Driving Course. A minimum of 3 laps will be completed in convoy with each Soldier driving at least 1 of the laps. The following steps are to be completed by each of the Soldiers to complete this task: a. The following must be completed on the course: (1) Drive on the course road at the speed designated by the Convoy Commander. (2) Complete left and right turns. (3) Drive up and down a hill while maintaining proper distance between vehicles. (4) Conduct proper actions at a halt, ensuring vehicles do not bunch up. b. Once the first group has completed the convoy, rotate the drivers as before until all Soldiers have completed the course. 10. Brief Soldiers prior to the night driving course. 11. Having Soldiers 1, 2, and 3 occupy the same seats as for the beginning of the day driving course. Make sure all Soldiers put on and properly adjust their seat belts before you assume your position as vehicle commander. Fasten and adjust your seat belt before allowing the driver to start the engine. NOTE: Prior to negotiating the Driving Course at night, the driver will properly adjust the head harness. If available, the Rhino Mount will be adjusted also. The Rhino mount, if available, will be mounted to one Soldiers Kevlar and that Kevlar will be rotated to each Soldier. Ensure each Soldier has a Kevlar being worn properly prior to moving the vehicle. 12. The Soldier driving the vehicle will use the AN/PVS-7 Night Vision Goggles to experience NVG operation on the move. The instructor will keep the other NVG and will choose whether or not to wear it based on the circumstances. Have the driver turn on the blackout drive lights. Service drive headlights will not be used on the course except in an emergency or at the direction of the NCOIC. 13. Drive the HMMWV at night. a. Lap 1: Drive around the course road at normal speed. (1) Drive the vehicle around a right turn, a left turn, and negotiate a hill. (2) Drive the vehicle in a straight line, while in reverse, without a ground guide. NOTE: For this exercise, the VC will stand in the gunners hatch and direct the driver to turn the vehicle as if traveling through trees. (3)Cross the AVLB bridge.
