Aaron Aruliah TOPIC: 1) Explain why innovation is important for business.

Using examples from a company that you are familiar with (or an example on your university campus), outline the difference between innovation and change. INTRODUCTION: -Organisational innovation Definition according to McWilliams, 2010. (Innovation begins with creativity which is useful ideas). -As an outcome to organisational innovation businesses must be prepared by enforcing organisational change to remain competitive and stay in business. BODY 1/Argument 1: Innovation is important for businesses for many reasons... BODY 2/Argument 2: Innovation can be viewed as a positive or destructive force to an organisation... BODY 3/Argument 3: What change can refer to? And the difference between change and innovation at Kodak, and how they help each other through innovation streams. BODY 1: -Reasons by which innovation is important to a business -> because business competition growing in the modern world it is absolutely essential for an organisation to innovate as innovation is a vital ingredient for survival and profitability in the information age ; (Read; 2000) -keep up to date with competitors in the same industry. -To gain a competitive advantage. -Can cause technological lockouts which businesses want to avoid. BODY 2: -Innovation is an important driving force for business; however it can also be a detrimental force on an organisation: Positive driving force- "required in all organisations to take advantage of business opportunities and to solve problems", (Rouse, Morello-Urso, Whittaker 2009). Detrimental/ negative reasons -Reasons being, if a company is not continually innovative, they will fail and gain a competitive disadvantage. (Mention Kodak from McWilliams, 2010). -In relation to small businesses it can be very hard to adapt to the ever changing nature of innovation. Because it is forever

changing and it can be costly for small businesses to enter the market and survive in it. (Premkumar, Roberts; 1997) BODY 3: -According to Todnem, 1997, change management goes by the definition: the process of continually renewing organisational direction, structure, and capabilities to serve the ever changing needs of external and internal customers. -Change can be done to the corporate structure, eg: change to matrix structure if there is a departmental function and a project manager, management style eg: could use autocratic style for immediate decisions, etc. could even be change in outsourcing, or suppliers, market, new technology processes or procedure, ( Graetz, Rimmer, Lawrence, Smith, 2006). -Outline the differences between innovation and change with, using the example of the business: Kodak. -Where innovation is the successful implementation of creative ideas in organisations, change is the opportunity to obtain a competitive advantage whereby responding to internal and external forces. CONCLUSION: Concluding statement: All of the concepts explained above all lead to the conclusion that organisational innovation is absolutely essential for an organisation to maintain in a profitable and marketable business.
