The Moorestown Sun
By the 2015-16 school year,
there will most likely be 474 to 507
fewer students enrolled in
Moorestown Township public
schools than there are today.
That projected figure is the re-
sult of a demographic study com-
pleted and presented at a recent
Board of Education meeting by
Richard S. Grip, executive direc-
tor of Statistical Forecasting
LLC an educational consulting
firm that provides demographic
services for local schools.
The study projects that by 2015-
16, there will be somewhere
around 3,748 to 3,781 students en-
rolled in Moorestown public
schools, compared to the current
enrollment of 4,255 students. In
the study, Grip noted enrollment
has dropped 85 students since the
2005-06 school year and that the
total capacity for students in all of
the schools combined is 5,095 stu-
dents.
According to Grip, the project-
ed drop in enrollment is due to
negative kindergarten replace-
ment, a decline in the birth rate,
and a low percentage of females
in the 20-to-34-year-old age group.
Grip used district historical en-
rollments, birth data, and new
housing starts to come up with
grade-by-grade enrollments for
2011-12 through 2015-16.
One of the issues discussed in
the study called negative kinder-
garten replacement occurs when
the number of graduating high
school students is greater than
the number of kindergarten stu-
dents replacing them in the next
yearsomething Moorestown has
experienced in four of the last
five years, Grip said. He noted
that because the district has half-
day kindergarten, he used first
grade students for the study. The
study concludes that the district
has lost 50 students in 2010-11 due
to this because 349 seniors gradu-
ated last year and were replaced
by 299 first grade students.
Grip said that the median age
for Moorestown is 42.1 years old,
which is higher than both the na-
tional median average of 36 to 37-
years-old and the county median
age of 40.4 years old.
Grip also points out a fairly sig-
nificant drop in Moorestowns
birth rate combined with the fact
that demographics show women
within the 20-to-34-year-old age
bracket, considered to be of the
childbearing age, are lacking in
the Moorestown population.
The study examines new hous-
ing developments and how they
may affect student enrollment in
Student
population
to drop?
Demographic study predicts nearly
500 fewer students by 2015-16

The Moorestown Sun
The show will go on. Thats the
decision a citizens committee in
Moorestown decided about the In-
dependence Day Parade.
Dave Schill, who heads up the
committee, said the group has
been trying to resuscitate the pa-
rade since it went on hiatus two
years ago during a round of town-
ship budget cuts.
Schill said the group has raised
about $5,200, a bit more than the
$4,000 needed to have adequate
police presence at the event.
Its a celebration of our free-
dom, we want to do it up in a big
way. But we have a limited budg-
et. Well work our way up, Schill
said.
The committee of about 20 resi-
dents has been actively dis-
cussing plans for the parade since
last fall and is planning to meet a
few more times before the event
to tie up any loose ends, Schill
said.
The parade will kick off at
noon at Chester and Central
Streets. From there, the parade
will head up to Main St. and then
turn down Church St.
The parade will host dozens of
veterans, floats and cars. The pa-
rade is still seeking a marching
band, however, to play the popu-
lar holiday tunes.
Schill said the theme of this
years parade is 1776. Business-
es, organizations and residents
can donate at three levels; red
level donors pledge $17.76, white
level donors pledge $177.60 and
blue level donors pledge $1,776.
Schill said the group did receive
one anonymous donation at the
blue level.
Also part of the Fourth of July
festivities is a storefront decora-
tion contest, which urges busi-
nesses and shops to support the
holiday by decorating their win-
dows with red, white and blue.

Time to show support
for sports clubs
Its time for supporters of the
Moorestown sports clubs to
show their support.
The sports clubs have prom-
ised $800,000 of club monies to
improve the Wesley Bishop ath-
letic fields using membership
money to pay one-fourth of the
costs for the improvements they
have planned during the last two
years.
The other three-fourths of the
costs are planned to be paid by
Moorestown taxpayers using
open space funds, a 15 year bond,
and other financial instruments.
The likely lifespan of the arti-
ficial turf fields will be around
10 years.
The projections are that a new
artificial field will be needed to
replace the one proposed now
five years before the bond is
paid.
As the parents and kids in
2021 will want good fields, too,
they will likely float another
bond and pay for two bonds for
five or so years.
Most of the 4,000 kids in
Moorestown now will be long
gone by 2021, off to establish
their lives drawing on lessons
modeled by their parents, peers,
mentors and coaches.
How the supporters meet
their $800,000 or more financial
obligation to the township for
the modernized fields will show
the kids principled and practical
ways to meet financial responsi-
bilities.
One way is for supporters to
pony up the $800,000 they have
promised to pay via legal instru-
ments. They dont need to make
future club members cover their
bills and obligations.
To show a sense of equity and
community spirit they might
promise the township that they
will pay the 2.5 to 3.0 million dol-
lars outright rather than asking
others to cover their incurred ex-
penses. If parents of the 4,000
kids put up just $1,000 per kid,
the sports clubs problems would
be solved for the next five to 10
years at this one athletic field
site. It is time for the club sup-
porters to rally their clubs for
the fields needed this fall.

Dont balance budget
on the backs of elderly
With the continuous increase
of our national debt, our nation
adds more and more to the eco-
nomic burden that our children
will be forced to carry. Should
this be fixed? Yes. Must this solu-
tion include drastic cuts to
Medicare and Social Security?
Absolutely not. Budget propos-
als that promote arbitrary
spending limits will likely lead
to Medicare and Social Security
cuts that will directly harm our
most vulnerable citizens.
Weve worked our entire lives
and many older residents rely al-
most entirely on Social Security
payments to help pay for our
utilities and cover daily expens-
es.
In New Jersey, 22 percent of
Social Security beneficiaries
rely on the program for 90 per-
cent or more of their income.
Social Security and Medicare
cuts put our financial stability in
jeopardy by decreasing our in-
come and increasing our costs
with increased co-pays for med-

Too much to do
Pressing issues demand Congress time
T
he public is quick to jump on members of Congress for
doing nothing when it comes to important issues con-
fronting the country. The public needs to keep things in
perspective. These folks have busy schedules.
The most recent example:
Congressman Anthony Weiner,
who, according to The Associat-
ed Press, had a lewd photo sent
from his Twitter account and,
according to other reports, has
been sending out photos of
himself shirtless along with
explicit text messages.
And lets not forget: Idaho Sen. Larry Craig and his misad-
ventures in an airport mens room; another New York Con-
gressman, Chris Lee, and his shirtless photo; former Congress-
man Mark Foley and his interest in pages (and we dont mean
the contents of a book); John Edwards and his mistress (al-
though that might have taken up his time after he left Con-
gress); and, well, you get the picture. The list could go on and
on.
How, as reasonable American citizens, can we expect these
folks to address the economy, Social Security, taxes and more
when they have all of these other things going on in their lives?
And thats just Congress. Governors have to walk the Ap-
palachian Trail, fly in helicopters to a kids baseball game and,
well, entertain housekeepers.
We humble regular people should recognize the super-human
skills and abilities these individuals must possess to just
squeeze all of these activities into a 24-hour day. Were lucky
to make it home after work, walk the dog and catch part of a
Phillies game. After that, were beat and ready to go to sleep.
So the next time youre ready to lament government inaction,
stop yourself and consider this: Could you run a government
and still find time to shoot a hunting partner in the face? Didnt
think so.

There was also potential for a
mini marathon before the parade,
Schill said, but that idea will now
be put on hold until next year
when there is more time to plan
for it.
Schill said he encourages all
residents to come out and support
the holiday in town. Schill said he
remembers how important it was
to him to be involved in a Fourth
of July parade.
As a child we decorated our
bikes. It was meaningful to be in
the parade, Schill said. Today,
its one way to implant freedom in
our minds and the veterans
marching is important to see.

The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders Farmers
Market recently marked its sea-
son opening.
Located at the Burlington
County Community Agricultural
Center in Moorestown, the mar-
ket is celebrating its fifth season
selling Jersey Fresh fruits and
vegetables, baked goods and
unique crafts.
The farmers market will be
open every Saturday, rain or
shine, through October.
The market is open from 8:30
a.m. to 1 p.m. for shoppers to find
a wide assortment of fresh pro-
duce in season at the time of their
visit each week.
The Farmers Market is a
great place for Burlington County
residents to have access to the
freshest locallygrown and pro-
duced products, said Burlington
County Freeholder Bruce Gar-
ganio.
This year we are adding farm-
ing demonstrations sponsored by
Rutgers Cooperative Extension to
the markets program.
Demonstrations will include
plowing, planting, and harvesting
crops such as hops, sunflowers
and corn.
Also for the 2011 season, the
number of market vendors has
increased and shoppers will find
an increased assortment of sea-
sonal Jersey Fresh produce such
as blueberries, sweet corn, heir-
loom tomatoes, asparagus and
other organic vegetables, as well
as free-range poultry, pot pies,
cheese, baked and prepared foods,
fresh flowers and herbs.
The farmers participating at
this market are dedicated to offer-
ing locallygrown fresh food,
picked at its peak maturity to en-
sure the highest quality and taste.
Since the food is grown locally,
the need for chemical preserva-
tives and irradiation to artificial-
ly extend shelf life typically
found in produce offered in most
supermarkets is greatly reduced
or eliminated.
Each week will feature differ-
ent live musical performers and
educational workshops.
Special events and themed pro-
grams are also planned for the up-
coming season, including a corn
roast, tomato and peach festivals,
watermelon bash, ice cream so-
cial, and pumpkin painting.
The countys Agriculture Cen-
ter also features a community
garden with about 60 partici-
pants. In addition, a new Commu-
nity Supported Agriculture
(CSA) farm enables members to
purchase advance shares of pro-
duce grown on a section of the
property leased by Growing
Homes, Inc.

think so.

High praise
for county services
I was most pleased to see that
once again the Chosen Freehold-
ers of Burlington County have
blessed us with their generosity.
Their aptly named Farmers Mar-
ket has opened for the season!
And here I thought it was just
the popular senior citizen bus
service they were kind enough to
bring to us.
Now there are at least two
things that we should be eternally
in their debt for providing to us
humble taxpayers.
I will keep both of these self-
less acts of charity in mind this
summer when I receive my not in-
significant County tax bill. At
that time I will remind myself
that it is not simpleton taxpayers
like me who pay for or provide
anything it is truly the Chosen
ones who do it.

Still more to do for
Fourth of July parade
As the chairman of
Moorestowns July 4th parade
committee, sponsored by the
Moorestown Business Associa-
tion, I want to update you on the
status of this celebration of our
freedom.
One of the items Council cut
from the budget was the funding
of the parade, so if we are to have
one each year, the citizens need to
pay for it themselves.
As a result, a committee was
formed made up of residents
from around town who have been
working on the issue for many
months.
One of the major components
weve taken on is how to pay for
the parade. Our solution was the
1776 fund raising campaign
which has been is going well, but
were still short of necessary
funds.
Our 1776 fund raiser is a sim-
ple concept, and if everyone con-
tributes, we will have a parade to
end all parades. Individuals and
families can contribute at the red
level of $17.76, organizations and
businesses at the white level of
$177.60, and major sponsors at the
blue level of $1,776.
Were confident that every fam-
ily in Moorestown will be happy
to give $17.76 to see our parade off
to a rousing start in 2011. Its a
small price to pay to celebrate our
freedom.
Right now, weve received over
$5,200.00 in contributions, but
that is essentially what it will cost
for the required police and traffic
control. In the next few weeks,
lets come together and con-
tribute to make our parade a huge
success. There is no question that
we can have a parade that will be
the best in South Jersey. Its up to
all of us in Moorestown to make
it happen.
How can you contribute?
There are two ways: You can
write a check to the Moorestown
Business Association, with July
4 parade in the notation section,
and mail to PO Box 358,
Moorestown, NJ 08057.
Or you can contribute online,
at the Moorestown Business As-
sociations website:
www.moorestownbusiness.com,
and click the Join/Renew tab at
the top. From there, you can con-
tribute at any of the donor levels,
by credit card.
An additional change from pre-
vious announcements about
whats taking place that weekend
is the fact that weve deleted the
run that was supposed to take
place just before the start of the
parade. So, no run this year.
Look for us on Facebook and
we will see you along the parade
route on July 4, at noon.

One deal per day for 10 days. 10 deals in total. Starting June 20. Here are the first six.
the coming years. Grip said that
only a few large-scale develop-
ments in the township are
planned.
Mews at Laurel Creek is pro-
jected to have 122 age-restricted
housing units, which, he said,
should have little impact on the
districts enrollment. There also
exists the potential for 53, new
non-age-restricted housing units
in the township. In total, 39 public
school children are projected
from the development, he said.
That number is based off of Rut-
gers University Center for Urban
Policy Research, which publishes
yields for housing units in New
jersey based on housing type, geo-
graphic region, number of bed-
rooms, housing value, and own-
ing vs. renting.
