Santa Claus would likely ap-
prove of a new plan presented to
council by the appearance com-
mittee, but unfortunately he
wont have much of a say from
his workshop up in the North
Pole.
Members of council showed in-
terest in, but didnt fully commit
to, a plan that would see more
than $33,000 spent on holiday dec-
orations for Main Street this year.
Appearance committee mem-
bers Gina Zegal and Vickie Sewell
pitched their plan to council last
week, asking the members to con-
sider the allocation of $33,790 for
the purchase of 62 light fixtures
that would be affixed to each light
pole on Main Street from the in-
tersection near Friendlys to just
east of Chester Avenue.
Mayor John Button, liaison to
the committee, said its an issue
that is brought to his attention
just about every year during the
holiday season.
I hear over and over and over
again about our decorations or
lack of them on Main Street, he
said.
The council frequently talks
about bringing more attention
and visitors to the downtown
business district, he said, and this
would possibly be an attraction
during the holiday season.
Sewell explained that the gen-
tleman who will decorate Main
Street is a professional decorator
for several established commer-
cial districts and malls through-
out the area, including the Cher-
ry Hill Mall and the Promenade
in Marlton. Hes also a
Moorestown resident, she said,
and is quoting the same price for
the project that he gave the com-
mittee in 2005.
Its about having a sense of
pride in the community, Zegal
said. Having something like this
adorned on the majority of street
lights along Main Street in the
downtown area would bring visi-
tors downtown and improve the
aesthetics of the township.
However, the decorator would
need to know the councils deci-
sion by mid-July at the latest to be
able to prepare everything for the
2011 holiday season, Zegal said.
Councilwoman Stacey Jordan
said its an interesting idea, but it

The Moorestown Sun
Its been at the Swedes Run
Field since the 1800s, but is the
township willing to spend several
thousand dollars on necessary re-
pairs for the old farmhouse on the
property?
The historic farmhouse is not
on the states historic registry, but
it has come to be a symbol of
Moorestown Townships past.
Township Manager Tom
Merchel and Director of Commu-
nity Development Tom Ford
posed a question to members of
council last week, gauging their
interest to see if township fund-
ing was worth being spent to re-
pair the antiquated structure.
The most pressing problem of
the structure, Merchel said, is the
farmhouses roof.
Its rapidly deteriorating and
either needs to be repaired or
completely replaced, which
would most likely be an expensive
proposition, he said.
Merchel asked council if $1,500
could be allocated for an engi-
neering report on the structure.
Until a report is complete, he
said, the township wont know
the exact repairs necessary for
the farmhouse or how much it
would cost. Theres also a ques-
tion of whether the existing
structure could even support a
new, modern roof.
We all like the building, Mayor
John Button said, but we have to
come to a point where we see if
its worth saving or not.
Council member Stacey Jordan
echoed his feelings, saying that if
the price is right it would be
worth saving the structure.
I want to at least explore some
possible options, she said. Im
not saying that I want to spend
$100,000 in tax dollars for the
structure, though. Thats not fis-
cally responsible.
The council agreed to look at
various solutions in conjunction
with the historical society and
the open space committee before
committing funding to this proj-
ect.
Worth the funding?

Recently, 11 Moorestown High
School students were awarded
$2,000 Rotary scholarships during
a special ceremony, totaling
$22,000.
They were also honored at the
Rotary Lunch Clubs meeting re-
cently where Rotarians had the
opportunity to hear from each of
them as to where they were plan-
ning to attend college and what
they planned to study.
Students who received regular
scholarship awards were: Nic-
hole Bancroft (planning to attend
Drexel University, major undecid-
ed), Rebecca Cicales (planning to
attend Arcadia University to
study English/Education), Caro-
line Coriell (planning to attend
Fairleigh Dickinson University to
study Psychology), Victoria (Tori)
Lee (planning to attend Brown
University to study Mechanical
Engineering), Chloe Martianou
(planning to attend Rutgers Uni-
versity, New Brunswick, to study
Pre-med/Pre-dental), Nicholas
Mastroianni (planning to attend
Fairleigh Dickinson University to
study Business Management),
and Rhianna Werst (planning to
attend Rutgers University, New
Brunswick, to study English Lit-
erature).
Students who received special
scholarship awards were:
Nicholas Birbilis, Music Instru-
mental, (planning to attend Hel-
lenic College to study Theology),
Pamela Derickson, Music Vocal,
(planning to attend the University
of Vermont to study Biochem-
istry), Brandon Pugh, Interact,
(planning to attend American
University to study International
Business), and Daniel Schroeder,
Scott Coffee Memorial, (planning
to attend The College of New Jer-
sey to study Nursing).
The scholarship recipients
were selected on the basis of
scholastic achievement, extracur-
ricular activities, and financial
need, said Jeremy Countess,
who chairs the Scholarship Selec-
tion Committee. Ive done it for
years. This is a volunteer posi-
tion you just cant quite give up
because it is so satisfying to assist
these deserving students with
their goal of going to college.
In 48 years of scholarship giv-
ing, the Rotary Club of
Moorestown has awarded $487,000
to promising high school seniors.
Rotarians raise funds for the
scholarships through community
service projects such as the Ro-
tary Scott Coffee 8K (Memorial)
Run, held this year on June 4, the
Rotary Pancake Breakfast, typi-
cally held in early March, and the
Rotary Travel Adventure Series,
held throughout the year.

EDITORIAL
So just who is going
to pay for all this?
In reading Mr. Williams com-
ments in the June 8-15, issue, I
wondered if It was true? Does
one plus one still equal two?
But, hey, Mr. Williams, you left
out the main point in your story
failed leadership, having wast-
ing $3 million of taxpayer
money and counting.
As a taxpayer, I find little cred-
ibility in how a supposed proven
building professional (team) has
wasted almost $3 million and
counting on a building project
prior to a brick being placed.
Furthermore, it seems like more
money will be wasted since the
library folks arent on board ei-
ther with this project. How did
this happen with such profes-
sional advisers?
The citizen taxpayers of
Moorestown never voted or ap-
proved this wasteful venture.
Mayor Button and the Republi-
can Town Council do not have
the backing of the taxpayers of
Moorestown. Why is this? What
ever happened to We the peo-
ple?
Mr. Williams revisionist fic-
tion about the failed town hall
project is simply a failed story
from the start.
Have you noticed there is no
talk of how are we going to pay
for this? Ironically, there is talk
of taxes being lowered. How
strange that the Republican
Party of Moorestown has not
taken more control of these seri-
ous issues facing Moorestown
taxpayers poor enabling leader-
ship in denial about what really
matters using taxpayer money
unwisely. Lets not bring up the
plastic fields controversy raging
in town.
Who is going to pay for this
wasteful town hall venture?
Maybe Mr. Williams and compa-
ny should start passing around
the hat?
Edward Carilli
But what happens
if we do nothing?
I read with great interest Ms.
Cliffords letter to the editor. I
congratulate her on being such a
huge advocate for AARP. But is
she really a big advocate for sen-
iors?
She asks, Does a balanced
budget do much good if it bank-
rupts elderly citizens? The an-
swer is unequivocally no!
What she does not ask are the
following questions:
What happens if we do noth-
ing to try to lower spending and
balance the budget, and instead
end up bankrupting our entire
nation?
Does grandma want to put her
grandchildren in the wheelchair
and push them off a cliff ? I dont
think so!
The Medicare debate is not
just a concern for our seniors.
How we handle this debate will
affect our entire nation and all
future generations. The time to
act is now. If we wait much
longer it will be too late.
Politicians from both sides of
the aisle got us into this mess.
More of the same partisanship
and special interests deals will
only worsen it. Now is the time
to have a real Medicare summit,
but I propose we leave the politi-
cians and special interests at
home. Let those truly involved,
such as our seniors, doctors, hos-
pitals and all the other health-
care workers who care for them,
come up with a plan to save
Medicare, for all generations.
As for voting against any
budget proposal that threatens
Medicare, I think Ms. Clifford
should heed her own advice. I
think I heard somewhere that
Obamacare took half a trillion
dollars out of Medicare and yet
AARP was a big supporter.
Why was it alright then, but
not now?
Was AARP looking out for
seniors when Obamacare was
passed or were they looking out
for AARP?

Not a crime
But sexting raises parenting questions
H
eres a statistic for you: Roughly one in five teens in-
cluding 11 percent of girls aged 13 to 16 have sent a
nude or semi-nude picture or video of themselves to
friends or posted one on a Web site.
That statement comes from a
press release from Assembly-
woman Pam Lampitt, who cites
a 2008 survey by the National
Campaign to Prevent Teen and
Unplanned Pregnancy. The ac-
tivity is called sexting.
Frankly, we are shocked.
The purpose of Lampitts press release was to announce that
her bill had unanimously passed the Assembly a bill that
would mean that kids who do this sort of thing receive intense
education instead of criminal prosecution.
Well, yeah, that makes sense. Kids do stupid things some-
times. Sexting doesnt necessarily make them kiddie pornogra-
phers or sexual predators.
Yet it seems that some overly zealous prosecutors in several
states have charged youngsters with crimes, including distribu-
tion of child pornography, according to Lampitts recent press
release. So, unfortunately, the new law is necessary.
Still, how many of you, as youngsters, OK, even as adults
(and, member of Congress, we are not talking to you), ever
thought about snapping a quick photo of your naked self and,
say, tacking it up to a telephone pole or dropping it into the mail
to a buddy? Zero?
This issue isnt about technology. Its about values, instilling
a sense of right and wrong in the young ones and, when they
screw up, punishing them so that they learn that doing stupid
things leads to consequences.
Sure. Pass the bill. But maybe there should be a parental edu-
cation element added to it.
If your kids dont know the dangers of sexting, it shouldnt
require state intervention to teach them.

Wigs for Kids, a local
Moorestown charity, is still going
strong in Moorestown Township
as it enters its seventh year of ex-
istence.
Emily Lubin, a Moorestown
High School student, started the
Wigs for Kids Moorestown Chal-
lenge when she was a third-grad-
er at Baker School in 2004. Her
initial goal was to get 50 donors
by Mothers Day 2005.
She just finished her sopho-
more year at Moorestown High
School and donated her third
ponytail last week. When she ar-
rived at Kris Cole Salon in Delran
she had the good fortune of meet-
ing another benevolent little girl,
4-year-old Madalyn Poore of Cin-
naminson. Madalyn recently told
her mother that she wanted to do-
nate her hair to a little girl who
needed it. Last week she made
her dream a reality when Manag-
er and Stylist Theresa McDo-
nough Peterson donated Mada-
lyns haircut.
The Wigs for Kids Moorestown
Challenge is nearing 300 donated
ponytails since its inception. Kris
Cole Salon has been a very active
partner in the Challenge for
many years. All of the stylists do-
nate the haircuts as their contri-
bution and this is just one of the
many charities Kris Cole employ-
ees support.
If anyone is interested in do-
nating their ponytail to Wigs for
Kids, they can learn more by vis-
iting www.wigsforkids.org.

The Moorestown Travel
Lacrosse Clubs eighth-grade girls
team captured the championship
title at the recent OutBack
Shootout in Toms River on June
5.
After winning all four games in
their bracket, the team advanced
to beat North Brunswick in the
playoffs.
From there, they went on to
win 11-8 against West Windsor
Lightning.
According to representatives,
the girls forced key turnovers
from West Windsor Lightning as
a result of the aggressive defense
played by Alexandra ODonnell,
Jessi Button and Miranda
Chrone.
The eighth-grade girls domi-
nated control of the draw and
Gabby Cooper dominated in goal
with eight saves during the game.
Goals were contributed by Mel
Becker, Emily Troy, Kendall
Couglin, Kiera Dalmass and Adri-
ana Pendino with assists by
Alexandra ODonnell, Adriana
Pendino and Maggie Handlan.
Defensively, we played togeth-
er as a unit, successfully double
teaming the ball and shutting
down Lightnings offensive op-
portunities, coach Liz Borucki
said.
Our patience on attack and
well-placed shots helped us to
overcome an early three goal
deficit.
Throughout the day, our de-
fensive unit came up big for us, al-
lowing very few shots on goal.
When there was a shot on goal,
Gabby came up huge, making
save after save.
Offensively, we moved the ball
well, remaining patient and look-
ing for scoring opportunities. We
capitalized on loose balls all over
the field, and collectively worked
together as a team to win the
tournament and finish the day 6-
0.

By JEN ANDERSON
Special to The Sun
Under a clear and beautiful sky
on Friday, May 13, Our Lady of
Good Counsels Blessed Mary was
honored at the schools annual
May Crowning.
All the children from the
school met at the statue of the
Blessed Mother in front of the
school to pray in her honor. Dur-
ing the procession to the church,
the children, using their own per-
sonal rosaries, prayed aloud.
At the church, eighth-grader
Rachel Kueny crowned Mary out-
side the entrance of the church,
in front of the entire school and
staff, as well as many parents and
family members, while being at-
tended by Kimberly Ravold,
Sarah Dignam and Marissa
Topolski.
Following the crowning, a spe-
cial Mass was celebrated by Fa-
ther Damian and Deacon Chris
Piccollo.
The entire eighth grade sang a
very moving rendition of Marys
Song, which can still be viewed
on the school website at www.olgc-
nj.org. During the Mass, special
readings, prayers and songs were
celebrated by all in honor of our
Holy Mother.

Not so explosive end for town hall
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
For residents hoping to see a
massive implosion, clouds of
dust, and debris shooting out
through Moorestown Township
during the upcoming town hall
demolition, we have some bad
news for you.
Township Manager Tom
Merchel reported last week that
the town hall will be demolished
by a bulldozer.
There will be no explosives
used in the process, he said. The
demolition process will take
about 60 days to complete, he said,
and will most likely be finished
by August.
The fire-damaged building on
West Second Street must have its
electricity isolated before the
process begins, because the utili-
ties feed into the library building
adjacent to the town hall, Merchel
said.
