Flood Relief Efforts

In late July 2010, Pakistan was hit by floods resulting from heavy monsoon rains in the Khyber, Pukhtunkhwa, Sindh, Punjab and Baluchistan regions of Pakistan and affected the Indus River basin. Approximately one-fifth of Pakistan's total land area was underwater, approximately 796,095 square kilometers. The floods directly affected about 20 million people, mostly by destruction of property, livelihood and infrastructure, with a death toll of close to 2,000 .

At this disastrous flooding in the country, AMSA Pakistan team worked with great enthusiasm. The total donations collected by the team exceeded Rs. 300000 cash along with clothes, medicines and food supplies. The collection of donations and purchasing was managed by Miss Mariam Tahir (Secretary of Membership and Development) and the distribution was made by Miss Maryam Noor Malik (General Secretary).

Miss Maryam Noor herself went to the following cities ; (Daira Deen Panah, Pabbi, Kot Addu, Rajan Pur, Jam Pur, Nowshehra) . She was present with the team of Pakistan Youth Alliance, with the partnership of whom we carried out the relief camp work.

A Visit to Mashal School

23rd October was an unusual day from the very beginning. As we drove towards our destination, The Mashal School, troubles kept interrupting us with frequency, but we did not falter. First, there was no flash drive to carry the presentation we had prepared on Basic Hygiene. No USB in the 21st century! Ultimately, we copied it into a memory card and took a card reader with us. Then we stopped by at one of our friends where her mother gave us some delicious breakfast. We set out once again, but thats when problem number two hit us! We had no poster paints for face painting. CNG was low and what was more, it was 9 in the morning and the markets were closed!

Thats when I took the matter in my hands! I convinced the shopkeeper to open the shop especially for me, and finally we got our paints! Just when we thought that everything was now perfect, we remembered that we have a bat but no ball! We looked for shops on our way and eventually reached Bari Imam where a little kid helped us find a ball! Then came the trouble of finding the school. When we had roamed about Bari Imam for a good half an hour, we decided to call someone from the school to come and show us the way. While we were waiting, the principal of the school Mrs Zeba Hussain herself showed up and led the way! Finally we were at the school. Maam was kind enough to introduce the whole school to us. The school comprised of two sections, one for toddlers and one for slightly older kids. After the orientation, Maam took her leave and the students gathered in the yard for the lecture. Dr Zahra gave them a lecture on Basic Hygiene. The kids were interactive and listened to the lecture with great interest. After the lecture there was a question-answer session which showed that the kids understood the lecture and were ready to follow the advice given to them. The lecture was followed by a Poem competition in which little kids sang in cute tunes, the poems they knew. Their excitement could be seen from their faces. Kids looked lovely with colorful stars, butterflies and flowers painted on their faces. Little kids were seen flaunting their faces when we took the pictures. In no time, all students had gotten their faces painted. They looked excited and very cute. After face painting, chocolates were distributed to them and they were particularly instructed not to throw the litter around. At around 2 oclock, we took our leave among numerous handshakes and goodbyes. It was heart-warming to see how they climbed up the wall to wave us and some of them even followed our car and we had to stop again. All in all, it was a successful event and we all brought with us memories well remember for times to come.
