LP Problem : Zippy motorcycle manufacturing produces two popular pocket bikes (miniature motorcycles with 49cc engines): the

Razor and the Zoomer. In the ocming week, the manufacturer wants to produce a total of up to 700 bikes and wants to ensure that the number of Razors produced does not exceed the number of Zoomers by more than 300 Each Razor produced and sold results in a profit of $70 and each Zoomer results in a profit of $40. The bikes are identical mechanically and differ only in the appearance of the polymer-based trim around the fuel tank and seat. Each Razor's trim requires 2 pounds of polymer and 3 hours of production time, and each Zoomer requires 1 pound of polymer and 4 hours of production time. Assume that 900 pounds of polymer and 2400 labor hours are available for production of these items in the coming week. a. Formulate an LP model for this problem b. Sketch the feasible region for this problem c. What is the optimal solution? hide problemAttachment(s):

Solution :

The Points obtained from the inequation (2) are G(700 , 0 ) and H( 0 , 700 ) The points obtained from the inequation (4) are A(450 , 0) and B(0 , 900 ) The points obtained from the inequation (5) are C(800 , 0 ) and D( 0 , 600) We sketch the above inequations in the following graph to obtain the feasible region.

In the above sketch the shaded portion represents the feasible region for this LP Problem. In the above sketch we see that the feasible points are A(450 , 0) , I(240 , 420 ) and D( 0 , 600). Below we calculate the values of the Objective function (Z) at the feasible points.

Feasible Points A(450 , 0) I(240 , 420 ) D( 0 , 600)

Value of the Objective function ( Z ) 70 450 + 40 0 = 31500 70 240 + 40 420 = 33600 70 0 + 40 600 = 24000

In the above table we see that the maximum value of the objective function is 33600 which is at the point I (240 , 420).

Therefore, the solution for this LP problem is x1 = Number of Razors to be produced = 240 x2 = Number of Zoomers to be produced = 420 And the Maximum profit by the above number of production = $ 33,600 The output obtained using the Excel solver (Computer solution ) to this LP Problem is given in the following.

Solution by Excel Solver :
