IN THE NEWS
Police hunt for vicious bank robbers TWO robbers wearing balaclavas carried out a terrifying raid on the NatWest Bank in High Street, Tarporley, last month. They attacked two members of staff and stole cash from the tills. Police found what they believe to be the getaway car, burnt out in a field just out of town. Cheshire Police spokeswoman Jacqui Hanson said: Police believe the offenders may have left via fields at the rear of the bank and are asking anyone who may have seen anything of relevance to contact them. A report was received of a car on fire in a field near to the Tarporley Roundabout at the junction of the A51 and A49. Police are looking at the possibility this vehicle may have been used by the offenders at some point and are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a car driven onto or parked on the field at any point. Police are asking for information about the robbery which took place on Wednesday 8th June. Call Chester CID on 0845 458 0000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Fighting for better care for the elderly

The Bunbury Agency is delighted to announce their new association with Sarah Sharkey. Sarah is a qualified Social Worker and previously worked within the Cheshire County Council Chester Patch Team for the elderly for five years. Having discovered that important services for vulnerable people were often overstretched and lacked funding, she set up her own business, Sarahs Support Service, to provide bespoke professional assistance and information for people in need, which will help them to remain living independently in their own home.

Do you require additional assistance to support a relative or friend?

Sarah has a vast amount of knowledge and experience in this field and will visit people in their own homes assisting them with all manner of things ranging from ensuring they gain access to local services and entitlements, support with medical appointments to managing paperwork and shopping. Sarah is CRB checked through the Agency and will be acting as our Consultant on these issues. If you need some daily or respite care she can liaise with us on your behalf, making sure you have the care you require. Like us, Sarah believes it is vital to promote and support peoples well being and independence in the home especially those who do not qualify for local authority support. Organising support at home can be very daunting; having someone who can visit you in your own home to help you identify local services and entitlements which can benefit you, can often make the process much easier. If you would like to speak to her please telephone the Agency and we will arrange for her to call you.

Stop press!
If you have experience in Caring or Companion/Housekeeping please contact us on 01829 730 201

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

Busy year for the parish council

THIS year we have held 11 Parish Council meetings as well as extra planning and special interest meetings. Speakers have been invited to brief us on such as the changes in planning regulations; social housing and The Localism Bill. We also received reports from our local police and our Police Community Support Officer, our local Borough Councillors and members of the public who wished to bring matters to our attention. Through the monthly articles we have written for Tarporley Talk and through our web site www.tarporley.org.uk we have endeavoured to keep residents in touch with Parish Council matters. During the year our contractors have kept the village clean and tidy; picked up litter; kept footpaths clear; painted the village benches; cut the grass in the cemetery; watered the hanging baskets and planters on High Street and so much more. Some improvements we have initiated this year are having the yellow lines and zebra crossing in High Street repainted; new external lights outside the public toilets and more dog waste bins. The success of all this work was rewarded when in September it was announced that Tarporley had won the Best Kept Village Award and were also the overall winner of the Community Pride Award. The Parish Council has provided grants to local organisations, to St Helens Church and the Baptist and Methodist Church towards churchyard maintenance; to the Community Centre towards a new heating system; as well as amounts to, for example, the Girl Guides and Tarporley Silver Band. The Parish Council once again ran its Christmas Lights event in December; attended the Village Carnival in July and the Remembrance Service in November. This year we were pleased to sponsor a successful Tarporley Then and Now exhibition of Photographs in March at the Community Centre. We also distributed a flyer to all homes encouraging people to contact the police when they see incidents or crimes being committed. Our new project for the year was our winter gritting scheme. A team of volunteers gritted the pathways and some road junctions when they became icy. We also campaigned to see the day centre for older people continue running, and the formation of Rural Community Services (West Cheshire) to take over running it.

Finances 2010-11
The year opened with a bank balance of 47,564, with a planned precept income of 56,000 and a budget of 61,790, other income accrued in the year was 7,398. Expenditure during the year amounted to 56,180 up from 53,268 in 2009-10; increases in outgoings included a grant towards the Community Centre heating system and the cost of constructing the cemetery garden, this left a year-end balance of 54,782. The balance being carried forward includes provision for asset replacement and for agreed projects such as the outstanding Parish Plan implementation project. The declared total value of fixed assets increased from 145,674 in 2009-10 to 149,034 due to index linking.

New heart screening service could be a life saver

Chester based businessman, tim savidge, is at the helm of a new company providing a vascular screening service. Joining forces with Anna hughes, who lost her sister to a heart attack and had her own brush with serious cardiovascular illness, the business, Young@heart aims to help people take control of their health through early detection and prevention. Operating from local clinics, Young@heart offers a new and innovative service using a wrist sensor to pick up arterial pulse waves. this provides a measurement which is used to assess the age of the arteries. Pulse wave technology was recently featured on BBC Breakfast and radio 4 as a way to measure blood pressure as it leaves the heart (CAsP) rather than the traditional test on the arm (known as the brachial pressure). Gradual stiffening of arteries is a natural part of the ageing process. however, lifestyles, level of activity, diet and hereditary factors all have an effect on how quickly this happens. A higher than average reading is a good indicator for cardiovascular disease and reduced life expectancy. tim savidge says this test is great for people who may not show outward signs of cardiovascular disease but may later develop problems. those who have a family history of heart attack or stroke are at greatest risk. Identifying a health problem before it becomes serious is vital. We find that many clients have far higher readings than expected. this has been helpful in allowing people to consider their options. By offering a follow up scan were able to provide the added benefit of being able to measure the effect of our recommendation. Anna hughes concludes, I cannot know for certain this screening would have saved my sisters life but Im convinced it could save others. the consultation takes half an hour and results are explained during the appointment.

Appointments now available at the Zenchi Clinic, nr Tarporley.

Tarporley Health Store celebrated five years in business last month by showcasing some of the healthy and natural foods. Area fund raiser Jenny Challoner, whose son Christopher is serving with the RAF, was collecting cash for the charity. Dodging the showers at Tattenhall fete

AFTER a blazing April and a sunny May, we were lucky to get away with a rain-free afternoon on the Park School playing fields on Saturday 11th June, writes Anne McGrath. A massive downpour at 12 noon put the fete in jeopardy and delayed the setting up of some of the attractions but luck prevailed and the afternoon was sunny but temperatures were distinctly lower .... reflected in the queues for the BBQ and the Coffee and Cake Cafe. There was little time for lingering after 4pm when another deluge brought the Fete to a close. It was lovely to see so many families out enjoying the attractions and the money raised going to support St. Albans. No Fete is possible without the dedicated work that goes on behind the scenes by the organising committee and a huge thank you goes to them all. Our thanks also go to the many businesses both in and around Tattenhall for their generous support and knowing that these are difficult times it is especially appreciated. Thanks also go to the many locals and visitors who attended the Fete and spent generously... without you all there would be no Fete !!. In the meantime lets hope that we are in for the amazing summer weather we were promised and a big thank you again for everything !!

health & beauty

with Angela Bartlett
Q. I have very sensitive skin and Ive spent a lot of money on different moisturisers only to find that after a few applications it starts to irritate my skin. What should I avoid, in a moisturiser? A. Sensitive skin is a common problem. Check your skincare ingredients list and avoid synthetic fragrance, fragrant plant oils, menthol, alcohol and citrus extracts which all have the potential to cause skin irritation. Irritation from skincare ingredients is very harmful to the skin as it creates inflammation which results in the skins immune system becoming impaired. This affects your skins capacity to produce healthy collagen thereby leading to premature skin ageing. If you have oily skin the irritation can also trigger increased oil production which is the last thing that you need! If the moisturiser is from a good skin care company and it causes irritation you should be able to send the product back and redeem your money. Its not just ingredients that can cause irritation, for other common skin irritants to avoid to keep your skin looking beautiful visit the newsletter page of my website www. angelabartlett.co.uk Q. I am getting married to my girlfriend at the end of the summer. I have very oily skin and I am concerned that the shine on my face will ruin the wedding photographs for her. I dont want to go appear vain by letting the makeup artist loose on me. What can I do! A. There are many effective skin care and, dare I say it, makeup products available for men now. You may have seen me on The Apprentice last month demonstrating makeup products for men on one of the candidates! There are now products which are designed with men in mind to address the particular concerns men have without looking as if they are wearing makeup. Track down some Antishine powder and dust it over areas that are most likely to become oily nose, forehead and chin. You will look good for the photographs and no one will know that you are wearing it! For the top 5 makeup products for men visit the newsletter page of my website www.angelabartlett.co.uk

Flowers For July

GardeninG by Janet HeatH

Many of us buy plants in spring because it is the traditional time to start gardening but the plants we buy are mostly spring flowering and that can leave your borders feeling a bit let down in mid-summer so now is a good time to visit your local garden centre and buy some plants for summer colour.
Consider some of the following perennials which will flower year after year. Campanula lactiflora is a tall plant with stems of bell shaped flowers in pink, white or blue. Plant it at the back of a border in sun or light shade. The Shasta daisy, Leucanthemum x superbum Snowcap, has white daisy flowers and also likes a sunny position. I love the sword shaped leaves of Crocosmia so try taller varieties with their clusters of red, yellow or orange flowers. They like a sunny place and do best in moist soil that does not dry out. In dry years flowering can be disappointing but when happy, some tall varieties like Lucifer, will reach 1 metre in height.

Penstemons are also good for flowering from summer into autumn with tubular bell flowers in a wide range of colours. Last winter my 2 plants were killed by the prolonged cold spell but they had survived 5 years. Its easy to take cuttings from them. Cut off new green shoots (not woody stems) about 10 cm long and remove the lower leaves. Place in a glass of water and you may find that some will produce roots after a few weeks if you change the water regularly. Pot up into compost when there are lots of roots. In July cut back flowering shrubs such as lilac, weigela and philadelphus, just after they finish flowering, if you want to reduce them in size. Cut off dead flowers from roses, penstemons, delphiniums, centaurea, nepeta and lupins and you may well get a second flush of flowers in late summer always a bonus! Dead heading annuals in pots will keep them flowering and do remember to keep pots well watered in dry weather. Sow salad seeds of radishes, rocket, lambs lettuce and lettuce for autumn cropping.

FOOTBALL TALK... TARPORLEY V

TARPoRLEY Vics first team have received the positive news that they escaped relegation and will remain in Division one of the Cheshire League for the 2011/2012 season.
Northwich Villa (Northwich Vics Reserves) have been accepted into the Northwest Counties League which leaves only one team relegated and two promoted to ensure the First Division has sixteen competing teams next season. Denton Town & Grappenhall Sports are the two promoted Teams from Division One. The end of season Presentation Evening was attended by over seventy people at Tattenhalls Recreation Club. After enjoying a Hog Roast provided by Rob Hales of the Hot Hog Company the awards were presented by Andy Williams and Steve Lloyd. Reserves squad awards went to Jack Heaton, Dan Ball and Matt Dean with Ed Pattinson, Steve Wright, Nick Abson and Richie Moss all receiving First Team awards. Chairman Clive Wilson presented the Special Achievement Award to Andy Williams for his exemplary work behind the scenes especially keeping the Clubs finances in order. Victoria Lloyd and Wendy Williams also received gifts from the players and the Club for their unstinting work behind the scenes, as well as for their patience in supporting Steve & Andy in their management roles for Tarporley Vics. Tarporley Vics FC used the evening to thank all its sponsors for their continued support throughout the season. With match

referees and their assistants alone costing in excess of 2,000 for 2010/2011 every penny that is contributed is appreciated and goes towards ensuring football is not too expensive for our local young players. Tarporley Vics are also extremely grateful of the support shown with regards to setting up our new junior section. The Round Table have contributed towards the necessary Coaching Courses for management team Andrew Moreton & Dave Windsor. Peter Jones (Livestock Ltd) has sponsored the kit, Rob & Clare from the Village Butchers have provided training tops and the Co-Op Community Fund has also provided money for T-Shirts for all the players. Our thoughts now turn to next season, and further devolving the squads as well as the club as a whole. New sponsors are always welcome and support opportunities start from as little as 25. New players are always required to freshen up the squad so if you are new to the area please come along to pre-season training which starts on 9th July. Go wild about art

One of the jewels in the crown of the Cheshire summer; the national exhibition of Wildlife Art (neWA) will be showcasing almost 400 paintings and sculptures of the highest quality in a dazzling variety of styles. each July, this delightful exhibition, now firmly established at the award-winning Gordale garden centre at Burton, on the Wirral, promises an experience the whole family can enjoy for free. And, during its first three days, the exhibition will be augmented by live art demonstrations by celebrated British wildlife artists. each day of neWAs Wildlife Weekend will feature at least three artists showing and sharing their skills on behalf of conservation charities. On the opening day of the show, Friday 15th July, Pollyanna Pickering will be demonstrating her immensely popular painting technique alongside the Born Free Foundations Chris Wright. Saturdays guests include Wirral-born artist Clare Shaughnessy and the local Wildlife Trusts, while Sunday 17th will see bird painters and woodcarvers joined by representatives of the RSPBs neighbouring Inner Marsh Farm reserve. The exhibition continues at Gordale until Sunday, 31st July. For more information visit our Facebook wall via www.newa-uk.com

This fun day of participatory activity, on Sunday 10th July, at The Kings School (Chester), is open to all young Cheshire violin students and is absolutely FREE! The Violin Open Day will provide a unique opportunity to bring together a mix of violin students of different ages, abilities and learning backgrounds to join in fun and interactive workshops.
