July 1, 2011 Dear Friend, When Israel settled in the promised land, they enjoyed a time of freedom like

few people have ever enjoyed. Few people appreciate or understand the foundation of that freedom and what it took to maintain it. God didnt give Israel everything on a silver platter. They had to fight for the land, to fight for their freedom, and to work for their prosperity. None of that would have worked without the foundation of freedom. So what was that foundation of freedom? Israel was given a law, and a system of worship designed to maintain that law, to implant the law in their national memory, and to shape the national conscience. Heres what Moses said to Israel: Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee. . . . I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed (Deuteronomy 4:23-26). The common assumption here is that there would likely be some supernatural curse on Israel, that God would destroy them. Not necessarily. The national rot that would set in would take care of the whole thing. Later in the same speech by Moses: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up (Deuteronomy 6:4-8). There are two very big things here. One is the danger of idolatry and the natural result of it in the decay of the moral fabric of the people. The other is the Law of God, not in the legalistic sense, but in the moral sense of a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. This is the first of two, yes, even three things. The truth is that the first of these two thingsthe system of worshipis the more crucial of the two. The system of worship draws people back to God when they have gone astray. Almost everyone misunderstands the Law. They misunderstand both aspects, ceremonial and moral. They take off from the legalistic assumptions of the strictest Jewish sects, and position themselves both for and against the Law. If I keep the Law, God will bless me and save me. If I break the Law, God will curse me and hate me. Both ideas are dead wrong about the Law. Another common mistake: I keep the Law, not because I have to, but because I love God. It will make God happy if I keep the Law. That makes three ideas that are dead wrong. Let us take a look at a different idea. The Apostle James speaks in James 1:22-25 of the perfect law of liberty, and says that a person who works within that law shall be blessed. Now what does James mean by the perfect law of liberty?
