General Specification

Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) up to 1600A

1 - Standards a) MCCBs will be manufactured to meet the general requirements of IEC/EN60947-2. b) MCCBs will have isolation characteristics to fully satisfy the requirements of IEC/EN60947-2 and main switch characteristics to fully satisfy the requirements of IEC/EN 60 204-1. c) MCCBs will satisfy the requirement for Protective Measures as defined in chapters 41 48 of IEC/EN 60 364. That is: Protection against thermal influences Protection of cables and wiring against over-current Protection against under-voltages Provision for isolation and switching Provision for the application of additional protective measures Selectivity of protective measures determined by external influences

2 - Performance a) MCCBs will have a range of short circuit capacities from 25kA to 150kA; selection will be determined by the prospective short circuit at the point of installation. b) MCCBs will be available as 3 pole or 4 pole devices throughout the current range. c) MCCBs will be suitable for the protection of a variety of common load types. As a minimum requirement this must include: System protection Cable protection Generator protection Motor protection

d) Where an MCCB is selected for the protection of an individual motor then the device must provide single phasing sensitivity in accordance with IEC/EN60947-4 or a separate motor overload device must be fitted to provide this. e) MCCBs will be able to operate in ambient temperatures up to and including 50 degrees centigrade without any de-rating of the device or modification of the trip setting. f) MCCBs must be suitable to operate with voltages up to 690V AC 50/60Hz. g) Thermal & Magnetic releases must be independently adjustable from the front of the device. h) When a motor drive (remote operating) mechanism is fitted the system must allow for local, manual activation (opening & closing) of the device, with or without the motor drive being electrically connected. i) MCCBs must have the option of electronic sensing systems for ratings of 100A and above (with a minimum thermal setting of 50A) j) When an electronic sensing system is selected, local indication of the pre-set load threshold must be provided on the front of the MCCB by means of an LED. k) When an electronic sensing system is selected, all MCCBs must be able to provide, without the addition of any interposing devices, diagnostic information to show: The serial number of the device Trip history, including type of trip Phase loading by individual phase Current trending The setting of all externally adjustable parameters

3 - Connection a) Main terminals must be capable of accepting the largest recommended conductor size/type for the rating of the device without the need for extension or modification of the terminals. b) Main terminals must be adaptable to accept all commonly used conductor and termination types, including round copper, flat copper laminate, solid copper, aluminium and bolt-on lugs. c) Rear connection should be facilitated by the provision of rear extension terminals. The fitting of these rear extension terminals should not increase the footprint of the MCCB or compromise the Ingress Protection (IP) standard of the whole installation. d) Where a control circuit derives its supply from one of the main terminals of the MCCB this must be provided for by the addition of a separate control termination point. This extension terminal must be insulated to IP20. Under no circumstances should control cables be bundled with the connection in to or out of the main terminals. e) Control circuit connections should be fitted with screw heads capable of accepting Phillips, Possidrive or standard flat-faced screw drivers and have self-lifting clamping washers. f) For applications where a high degree of vibration can be anticipated then bolted main connections should be used and control circuit terminals must be fitted with sprung clamp terminals or flying leads.

4 - Construction a) All main and control circuit terminals will be clearly marked to the current IEC standard in dark grey/black text on a light grey background. b) All markings should be permanently etched or embossed onto the device. Any printed markings must be resistant to any chemicals routinely or occasionally used in industrial processes. Self-adhesive labels are not acceptable under any circumstances and must not be used. c) MCCBs must be able to accept the retrospective fitting of auxiliary contacts without the need for the device to be disconnected or removed from the installation. d) Auxiliary contacts must be able to indicate on/off/trip and it must be possible to accommodate these within the footprint of the MCCB. e) MCCBs must be able to accept the retrospective fitting of shunt or under-voltage releases without the need for the device to be disconnected or removed from the installation. f) When a shunt or under-voltage release is fitted it must be possible to accommodate these within the footprint of the MCCB. g) MCCBs will be toggle-actuated with ON, OFF and TRIPPED positions clearly marked. From the TRIPPED position it must not be possible to reset the device without first moving to the OFF position. h) A rotary drive mechanism and range of direct-mounting and cover-interlocking handles must be available for all MCCBs. When a cover-interlocking handle is used, the drilling pattern must be identical for all handles at all frame sizes, in order to simplify engineering. i) When a rotary drive mechanism and handle are used then the handle must have ON, OFF and TRIPPED positions clearly marked. From the TRIPPED position it must not be possible to reset the device without first moving to the OFF position. j) When a rotary drive mechanism and cover-interlocking handle are fitted then the extension shaft must be mechanically supported to maintain an angle of 900 to the front face of the switch. k) When a rotary drive mechanism and cover-interlocking handle are fitted then the mechanism must include a system to accommodate variations/movements in the cabinet door of at least 5mm in every direction.
