ABOUT QUALITY & DETAIL OF OUR HUMAN SKELETONS
any characteristics distinguish our human skeletal reproductions from others, but primarily it is the
detailed retention of the organic elements of bone that are essential for advanced study. Such detail
includes sites for muscle and ligament attachments, small landmarks such as nutrient foramina, fine detail
such as that required by forensic investigators (for example, the pubic symphysis), and accurate weight.
Our aim is to create a reproduction that is virtually indistinguishable from the original. In fact, as real
human skeletons have become difficult and costly to obtain, Bone Clones skeletons are being used as an
alternative to real bone.
Casting from originals that present diverse osteological characteristics, each Bone Clones skeleton cast
is hand-made from start to finish. The process involves many steps. It is our belief that no single step is
more important than any other; from the selection and preparation of the original specimen to making the
mold, casting, finishing, and articulating the piece, each step is performed with meticulous care.
In addition to devoting the time it takes to assure the finest quality and accuracy, we offer a unique
selection of replicated human skeletons that include three different fetal, child, and adult skeletons. We
recently added the skeleton of an adolescent and a skeleton that captures the complex osteological
evidence of dwarfism. In pursuit of providing models that medical and forensic professionals are interested
in, we continually evaluate our product line to determine how we can enhance it and in what way we can
contribute further.

Strange Bones: Curiosities of the
Human Skeleton will focus on how the
human skeleton is extremely interesting
and adaptable, and the many strange,
odd, and curious things that happen
to our skeletons. The exhibition
will highlight examples of skeletal
curiosities, bone remodeling (Wolffs law
of bone transfiguration), and adaptation.
Themes or sections will include: bone
biology (normal bone growth and
development);
skeletal
congenital
anomalies (bone abnormalities some
people are born with); diseases that
disfigure the skeleton; strange healing
patterns of traumatic injuries; and
cultural modification of the skeleton
and teeth. The Museum of Man has a
world-renowned collection of skeletal
pathology which will be highlighted in
this exhibit. However, our collection
will also be supplemented with loaned
specimens
from
other
scientific
institutions. Strange Bones will definitely
have great human interest appeal,
and will teach our visitors about the
biological forces behind certain skeletal
diseases and disfiguration.

San Diego Museum of Mans permanent exhibit, Footsteps Through Time: Four Million Years of Human
Evolution, is designed to engage visitors of all ages in a 65 million-year journey through time. Bone
Clones casts assist in documenting the evolution of primates from Lucy to Neanderthal to Homo
sapiens. Visitors are also able to compare brain, femur, hand and foot size of various living primates,

Fossil Hominids:
A collection of recreations that represents the
most important finds and time periods of hominid
evolution, including Ardipithecus ramidus,
Australopithecus afarensis (skull and skeleton),

Human Anatomy:
A large selection of human skulls and skeletons
ranging from prenatal to elderly, including sex
and ancestry differences. Bone Clones offers the
worlds only fetal osteology reference set to span
the intrauterine growth period from 13 weeks
to full term. Available also are several skulls
designed to teach advanced anatomy. These
include calvarium cut, sagittal cut, disarticulated
and color-coded skulls.
Extant Animals:
An impressive collection of skulls, skeletons,
talons, horns, and teeth of animals including
great apes, lesser primates, modern cats, bears,
birds, dogs, sharks, reptiles, amphibians, hippos,
rhinos, giraffes, marine mammals and other small
mammals.
Extinct Animals:
A fascinating array of skulls and skeletons that
includes sabertooth cats, the cave bear, the shortfaced bear, the elephant bird, the mammoth, the
sarcosuchus, thoosuchus, and the dire wolf.
Forensic Science:
A collection of rare specimens, carefully selected
by experts in forensic science. Enhanced by
licenses to cast from originals in both the San
Diego Museum of Man and the Maxwell Museum
of Anthropology, this includes skeletal elements
affected by trauma (e.g., blunt, sharp, firearms

he first half of our catalog concentrates on Bone Clones of primates: humans, hominins, apes, and lesser primates. ExT
panding on all aspects of primate anatomy, we have added several new skeletons and offer many postcranial parts. Based on
feedback from our customers who teach anatomy and anthropology, we produce casts that are essential in demonstrating certain
structures of the skeleton, variations and conditions of bone, comparisons from one species to another, evidence of adaptations
to environment.
The second half of our catalog contains a large selection of Bone Clones of animals, both extinct and extant. Many regions of
the New and the Old world, as well as many species, are represented. Some of the newest zoological Bone Clones are shown

ne Clones, Inc has been granted exclusive license to reproduce and market the reconstruction of Peking Man, Homo erectus (also known as Pithecanthropus pekinensis (Sinanthropus) made by Gary J. Sawyer and Ian Tattersall. Combining casts made from the original fragments found in the caves
at Zhoukoudian, China, they were able to reconstruct what has become the
definitive Peking Man skull image.
Presented with the unique opportunity to cast and distribute this important
hominid skull, reconstructed from original materials by two eminent experts in
their fields, we are pleased to add Bone Clones BH-038 Sawyer/Tattersall

rom Madagascar, the Indri is the largest of all modern prosimians and may reach
a length of 4 feet with its legs extended. They live in trees and are climbers and
jumpers. Their skeleton shows evidence of strong, muscular legs and long limbs
which facilitate moving from tree to tree. The log shown here is a cast and is supplied

were prepared by Evan Matshes, M.D., co-author of Human Osteology and Skeletal Radiology, or Karen Ramey Burns, Ph.D.,
anthropologist and author of Forensic Anthropology Training Manual.
The reports contain sections regarding general characteristics of the specimen, as well as sections concerning the age, sex and
race of the skull or skeleton, with a clear indication of the non-metric measures that went into the determination (or inability to
make a determination) of such. Pathologic or traumatic features are also assessed.
A listing of reports available can be found on our website under the Human Analysis Reports category. A printed version of the
4-8 page report is sent with each Bone Clones purchased for which a report exists.

originals we cast from, and concentrate on retaining the
organic elements that are essential for study.
Our custom formulated polyurethane resin, developed by us at
inception in 1993, simulates bone detail, weight and appearance.
An outstanding feature of our skulls is the enamel finish of the
teeth, which are poured separately and from a different material
than the bone material. These details, while time consuming,
were developed to achieve the incomparable realism of our
product.
In this catalog you will find an extensive selection of human
skulls ranging from prenatal to elderly and covering sex and
ancestry differences, as well as trauma and pathology.

his skeleton is exemplary of an extremely muscular body. The deltoid tuberosities are large and the humeral
torsion is impressive. All of the bones are very dense. Educators may want to use this skeleton, along with
a more gracile male skeleton, to demonstrate the range of male forms and the changes that can take place
with increased muscle mass. The skull displays traits overwhelmingly associated with maleness. These include a
massive jaw, square chin, large supraorbital ridge, large mastoid processes, and projecting occipital protuberance.
The estimated age of upper 20s (range 23-35) is based on the fact that developmental changes are complete but
degenerative changes have barely begun.

ristine examples of adolescent skeletons are rare finds in teaching

collections. After much searching, Bone Clones has acquired an excellent example of an adolescent skeleton. The developing skeleton
is very different from adult skeletons -- the numerous ossification centers
and growth plates can dramatically change the appearance of individual
bones. Learning how to assess and gauge the degree of skeletal maturation is a very basic but critical skill for students of anatomy. Thus, having
such a specimen available for laboratory teaching purposes is invaluable.
Furthermore, as even the busiest forensic osteologists and anthropologists
only rarely encounter the skeletonized remains of adolescents, this specimen may serve as a useful reference tool during the evaluation of individual
cases. The totality of features of this specimen, including those of the skull,
dentition, epiphyseal union and bone length, suggests an age between 15
and 18 years. While race and sex cannot be reliably determined on subadult
remains, the features of race of this individual are overwhelmingly Asian.
Sexual attributes are suggestive but not diagnostic of male sex.

particular bones, the fusion of others, as
well as the length of long bones, are also
important indicators of age.
For the sake of simplicity, we refer to these
skulls by a specific age. We realize that it
is not possible to attribute so particular an
age to a skull and that assigning a range
may be much more accurate. In fact, such
a range has been assigned to each skull
in a report prepared by Evan Matshes,
M.D. and co-author of Human Osteology
and Skeletal Radiology. These reports are

chondroplasia is a genetic condition that results in abnormal body proportions. In normal development cartilage converts to bone in
most places. In individuals with achondroplasia, that conversion process malfunctions, especially in the long bones of the arms and
legs, resulting in disproportionately short limbs. This skeleton is known to be from a female around 60 years of age. The short, malformed limbs, spinal scoliosis, and fragile, edentulous jaw, among other features, provide a moving record of a difficult life. Bone Clones

The Maxwell Museum of Anthropologys Laboratory
of Human Osteology, at the University of New
Mexico, specializes in numerous facets of physical
anthropology. The laboratory serves as a repository
of human remains and includes prehistoric, historic,
documented, and forensic remains.
Established in 1984 by Dr. J. Stanley Rhine, the
Maxwell Museums Documented Skeletal Collection
has grown to include 237 individuals encompassing
both sexes, all ages, and many population groups.
The skeletal remains are obtained by donation, either
by the individual before death, or by the family of a
deceased loved one. Information on the sex, age,
population affinity, and cause of death is available for
the majority of these individuals, allowing students
and visiting researchers to develop and test new
techniques and theories.
Since 1995, prospective donors or their families
have been asked to provide health and occupational
data as well. With this information, researchers
are able to examine the skeletal manifestations of
particular diseases including degenerative joint and
disc diseases, lymphoma, and osteoporosis, as
well as the reaction of bone to repetitive motions
and trauma.
Recent research has included
efforts towards the identification of handedness
in individuals, determination of body mass from
the skeleton, and variation in cranial damage
from various projectiles. The importance of the
Documented Collection cannot be overstated. No
other institution in the American West has as large
a collection of human skeletal remains with such
extensive demographic data.

truck. The perimortem fractures clearly show the damage
caused by the intense blunt force trauma. This is especially
true of the clean breaks in the innominate, one of the
strongest bones of the body. Also, the fracture of the femur

recognize that racial categories are predominantly
culturally constructed. However, there is a benefit in
recognizing the collection of physical characteristics
typical of skeletons, and especially skulls, from particular geographic regions of the world. Knowledge
of the ancestry of an individual can be as important
as knowledge of sex, age, or stature for purposes of

Fossil Hominid Introduction

Interest in the evolution of man
continues unabated. Each new
discovery feeds into the stream
of information about our ancient
human history. Skeletal material that is millions of years old
can, amazingly, be connected
and threaded into the process
that led from then to now. It
takes dedicated researchers
many years to unearth a skull
or a skeleton, whole or partial,
and many more years in the lab, documenting and analyzing each fragment in order to understand the significance of the find. Each discovery revives discussion and
furthers knowledge.
In the meantime, those dedicated to teaching human
evolution follow developments very closely. They are
dedicated to bringing the best, and the latest, information to their students. The Bone Clones Fossil Hominid
Series is a response to these educators. Casts made
from original finds are, generally speaking, hard to
obtain for use in the typical anthropology classroom, lab
or lecture hall.
Teachers are eager to teach and students are eager to
learn about our human ancestry.
Fifteen years ago Bone Clones, Inc. began casting a
series of skulls in this field of study. Each hominid is
carefully researched and re-created based on some
or all of the following: casts of the original fossils, the
latest literature (descriptions and/or published measurements) input from the scientific community and full color,
life-size photographs. Every effort is made to re-create
accurately anatomical details of size, shape, reconstructed areas, color and bone/fossil texture.
We continue to sculpt new finds as they happen, waiting for original papers to be published and enough
data obtained so that we may re-create casts as
precisely as possible. The hominid replicas offered
in this series are high quality recreations that can
be advantageously used by educators as important
visual aids in the classroom. They are not intended
for advanced graduate work or to be measured for
research purposes.
Judging from the positive feedback that we consistently
get from professionals teaching Anthropology, Bone
Clones provide a meaningful physical dimension to the
discourse on evolution in the 21st century.
Homo ergaster Skeleton, KNM-WT 15000

Nariokotome Boy, Articulated
Bone Clones reconstructed the Nariokotome Boy skeleton by
using bones from the disarticulated version, which were based
on the original find. In addition, by extrapolating from published
data, relationships to other bones, and partial bone fragments,
we reconstructed several vertebrae and the sternum, painting
these reconstructions black to differentiate them from the found
bones. We used brass parts to indicate other missing bones.

1.6 MYA. Discovered in Nariokotome, Kenya. The completeness
of this skull allowed scientists to get accurate measurements of
brain size. Many other skeletal parts were also recovered, giving
anthropologists a great deal of information regarding body size, limb
proportions, age of death (probably 12 or 13 years) and whether or
not language was possible. The pelvis reveals a greater ability to run
than modern humans, and some skeletal parts reveal a closer affinity
to australopithecines. Skeleton is provided disarticulated along with
a numbered photo.

Farpoint Clovis Spearpoint
The 8-inch Farpoint Clovis Spearpoint was found in 2005 by
Edgar Perez at a residential construction site in Malibu. The first
such artifact found on the West Coast, the Clovis Spearpoint
indicates the presence of Clovis people 11,000 years ago and
raises questions about the origins of the earliest inhabitants of the
Americas. It is currently curated at the Santa Barbara Museum of
Natural History.

ramidus was discovered by Tim White and
associates in 1994 in
the Afar region of Ethiopia and published in
2009. The partial skeleton ARA-VP-6/500, now
is considered by many
to be the oldest skeleton
of a supposed human
ancestor. The discovery
teams examination of
the pelvis indicates that
this species was able
to walk upright, not with
the same fluidity of later
humans or even Lucy
but with much more
efficiency than chimArdipithecus ramidus Skull
panzees. However, the

lower part of the pelvis
offers evidence that the
species possessed the musculature required for tree-climbing. The bones of
the wrist indicates, according to the discovery team, that while moving quadrupedally, weight was placed on the palms of the hands rather than on the knuckles. White and associates hypothesize that Australopithecus is a descendant
of Ardipithecus, while others hypothesize that Ardipithecus might be an extinct
sister species to Lucys genus. Note that the skull, pelvis, left hand and foot are
currently available. The remainder of the skeleton is in process.

Serving an anchoring function for the
tongue, the hyoid is implicated in the
evolution of speech development.
The most complete Neanderthal skeleton

ever offered, this skeleton was reconstructed
and articulated by anthropologists Gary J.
Sawyer, of the American Museum of Natural
History, and Blaine C. Maley, of Washington
University. It was based primarily on the La
Ferrassie 1 specimen, with missing or incomplete elements filled in from other Neanderthal
casts. It was featured in the AMNH January,
2003 exhibit The First Europeans: Treasures
from the Hills of Atapuerca.
This reconstruction, more vividly than individual bones, illustrates how Neanderthals
differed from modern humans. Skeletal contrasts with modern humans can be noted in
the structure of the pelvis and rib cage.

Cranial endocasts provide a representation of the area inside the cranial cavity, which allows for an estimate of the volume of the brain. They provide the details of the outer surface of the brain, taking into
account that the space within the cavity is also filled with soft tissue structures such as blood vessels and
nerves. Because endocasts are useful for comparing relative sizes of different areas of the brain, they are
instrumental in evolutionary study. We would like to thank Ralph Holloway, Professor of Anthropology at

A 9-year-old female from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Sometimes called the pygmy chimpanzee, the smaller Bonobo species
is distinct from the common chimpanzee, P. troglodytes. Humans,
chimpanzees, and bonobos share a common ancestry, with humans
splitting off around 6 million years ago. Exclusively licensed to Bone
Clones by the San Diego Natural History Museum, a percentage of the
sales goes to the Museum to further its research.

The smallest of the great apes, Gibbons and Siamangs are known for
their remarkable gymnastic ability and extremely long arms. While they
have much in common, several characteristics distinguish the Siamang
from Gibbons. Most noticeably is its impressive throat sac, which
inflates to a size equal to the size of its head. The Siamang also has
webbing connecting its second and third digits.

Old World and New World Monkeys

The term Old World Monkey refers to monkeys of Africa and Asia. New World Monkey
refers to those found in The Americas. Generally, New World Monkeys live in tropical
environments and are smaller than their counterparts in other continents and are primarily
arboreal. Old World Monkeys are generally larger in size and prefer ground dwelling. All
monkeys are primarily herbivorous and are considered to be intelligent.
From afar, size is a distinguishing external characteristic between these two types of
Monkeys. Up close it is noticeable that in Old World Monkeys (who share the infraorder of
Catarrhini with humans and apes), the nose faces down and the nostrils are closer together
than in the New World Monkeys (Platyrrhini), whose nostrils are further apart and open to
the side.
Though both groups of monkeys share a similar diet, their dental morphology seems to have
diverged. Some, but not necessarily all, New World Monkeys have long, prehensile tails
useful for suspension in the trees while freeing up the hands for grabbing food. Old World
Monkeys do not have prehensile tails but do have opposable thumbs. These ground dwellers have also developed roughened bottoms that offer protection while sitting and sleeping
on the ground.
Another noted difference between these two groups of primates is their care of their young.
In New World Monkeys, the father often has greater involvement in rearing than is found in
Old World Monkeys.

The Art of the Model Maker

The University of Aberdeen Zoology Museum exhibits an interesting and beautiful collection of anatomical and zoological models dating from the 19th century to the present.
They title their exhibit The Art of the Model Maker. The Museums web page www.abdn.ac.uk/
zoohons/models provides a fascinating history of this specialized artistry that replicates biological
and anatomical forms.
In the 1800s materials like plaster, papier mache, wood and fabrics were used to recreate the natural
forms. In Dresden, Germany, a father and son applied their glass blowing techniques to the creation
of glass models of animals and plants. In France, a young medical student developed sophisticated
anatomical models. In small family workshops in France and Germany, amateur naturalists with an
eye for the artful created unique objects that endure today. These models became useful teaching
tools for the medical or biology student of the time. Each model was a meticulous, one-of-a-kind
representation of the original.
As materials and techniques progressed in the 20th century, the art of the model maker continued to
evolve. Although the copies used today in learning about human anatomy and animal osteology,
for example, are still sometimes referred to as models, they are created by forming a mold of the
original that in turn produces identical, multiple copies which are commonly referred to as replicas.

Arctodus simus (Cope-1897) became extinct 11,000 years ago. Specimens have been
found in several locations from Mexico to Alaska. These bears were extremely large,
and weight estimates have been in excess of 1300 lbs. This individual died 28,000 years
ago and was approximately 5 feet at the hip, standing about 12 feet tall. Both upright
and quadruped versions are available, as are all postcranial parts. Please inquire.

may sometimes feed on fish or invertebrates. With a torpedo-like
shape, they average 10 feet long and weigh around 1,000 lbs. We
were able to retain all parts of this complex skull, including the inside
of the braincase

Manatees are members of the order Sirenia, from the Latin Siren.
Could it be that this massive, half ton mammal fueled the mermaid
myth? Certainly, the Manatees tail inspires our image of the mermaid,
as does the up and down swimming movement achieved with this wide
paddle. These gentle animals are more closely related to Elephants,
Hyraxes and Aardvarks than to seemingly similar cetaceans (whales
and dolphins).

About the Elephant Bird
Aepyornis maximus
The Elephant Bird is considered the largest bird in

history. Possibly existing for nearly 2 million years
in Madagascar, it faced extinction by the middle of
the 17th century. The ancestors of the Elephant Bird
may have arrived in Madagascar during the Miocene,
as early as 24 million years ago. Related to other
flightless birds like the ostrich and emu, this heavyset herbivore measured approximately 10 feet and
1,000 pounds, three times the weight of an 8-foot
ostrich. This member of the ratites (Running Birds),
was known locally in the 1600s as Vouron Patra.
These birds were hunted by local inhabitants, and
may have been seen by the first Europeans to visit
the island. Likely not a fast runner as indicated by the
relative lengths of its leg bones, it may have relied on
its massive size and pointed beak to defend itself.

Mammoths belong to the order Proboscidea, which also includes the American Mastodon and the African and Indian Elephant. The
larger species of Mammoth, which appeared about 4 MYA, became extinct about 10,000 years ago, while some of the smaller species
existed until about 4,000 years ago. The specimen here is a Woolly Mammoth discovered in Alaska. Chosen for its quality and size, our

modern Great White Shark, Carchorodon carcharias, but are much larger and thicker and have finer serrations. Both C. megalodon and C. carcharias had a common boundary, although research suggests the
Great White frequented the cooler waters while Megalodon was found in warmer waters. Sometime following the Pliocene, as the ocean currents changed and the waters cooled, the now infamous C. megalodon
shark became extinct. The enormous size of the fossil teeth is reflected in the body size, with that of Megalodon approaching 60 in length, while the largest recorded modern Great White measured 19 6. All the
teeth (230 in the 5-row version) are cast from original Megalodon teeth and painstakingly secured to the jaw
frame one by one. The metal stands, as shown, are included along with a schematic of the layout. We are
grateful to Babiarz Institute of Paleontological Studies for lending us the original teeth which they selected
with meticulous care.

About Teeth
Mammoths and Mastodons belong

to the order Proboscidea, which also
includes the African and Indian Elephants. The Mastodons teeth have
cone-shaped cusps and are built for
chewing leaves, twigs and other plant
species. The teeth of the Mammoth
have long ridges, suitable for grinding
grass. As is the case with all Proboscideans, a worn down set of teeth would
be replaced by another, for a total of six
sets during their lifetime.

Rhincodon typus
As the largest fish in the ocean, its ironic that the whale shark would choose
the smallest organisms, plankton, as their main nutritional source. It uses
about 5,000 tiny teeth to filter feed. The largest recorded whale shark was
forty feet in length, though they are thought to grow even larger. These sharks
can open their jaws to over three feet wide to maximize feeding.

How did Bone Clones get started? and
How did you come upon the name?
Bone Clones is the result of one persons intense interest in animal behavior. That interest led him,
many years ago, to perform a necropsy on a Monitor Lizard that died in his possession. He wanted
to know the cause of death, unknowingly entering the field of forensic study. This reptile provided
the first skeleton that he studied and then articulated, fusing his interest in osteology with his artistic
inclinations.
Examining the relationship between the bony structure and locomotion in reptiles led to exploration
of the ways in which adaptation to environment influenced the development of living organisms. After
many years of study and practice came the idea of replicating skulls and skeletons of endangered
species so that others --- many others --- could have access to generally unavailable osteological
material.
Experimentation began in mold making and skull casting. In order for the replicas to be truly credible,
it was imperative that they be virtually indistinguishable from the original .
After the first cast, that of a Gorilla skull, was completed, it seemed that the results deserved a
uniquely descriptive and memorable name. A naming contest was soon in progress. After several
possibilities were considered and rejected, one clever person suggested Bone Clones. We knew
immediately that it was the perfect name.
So perfect, in fact, that it invites imitation. We are flattered but want to make sure that our customers
are not confused. Please take note: one (singular) Bone leads to (multiple) Clones. The company is
Bone Clones, Inc., the product is Bone Clones and the website: www.boneclones.com
The interest of one individual led to a multi-faceted exploration of possibilities in the reproduction of
animal and human structures in their skeletal forms. The vision of one individual, with an abundance
of enthusiasm and high expectations, motivates others.
Bone Clones is now a team effort. We appreciate the interest
so many of you express in our company and in our products.
