WHAT IS ISO 9001?

The International Organization forStandardization(ISO)isaworldwide federation of national standards bodies established in 1947 whose mission is to promote the development of standardization to facilitate the international exchange of goods and services and develop cooperation in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological, and economic activity. ISO 9000, the family of standards, was developed to provide global standards for quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA). It is a logical extension of the TQM philosophy, which stresses a systematic, integrated, consistent, organization-wide commitment to continuousimprovementwithinanorganization. ISO 9001:2000- QualityManagementSystems Requirementsspecifies therequirements foraqualitymanagementsystem.ItistheonemostdirectlyapplicabletoPBsdailybusiness activities and defines a framework of minimum requirements to demonstrate our ability to provide services that fulfill customer and regulatory requirements and enhance customer satisfaction. The key factor in the standard is Top Management involvement in the program and PBs leadership has demonstrated that over the years and continues with the ISO 9001:2000certifications. Over 150 countries have adopted the ISO 9000standards as theirnationalstandard;in the U.S. it has been adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society for Quality (ASQ). In Hong Kong, the government mandated that contractorsobtainISO9001certificationbyApril1996tobeabletocompeteforgovernment projects.Similarly,thegovernmentofSingaporehasrequiredISO9001certificationby1999 for contractors competing for government contracts larger than $21.5 million in total construction value. In fact, many U.S. customers are now requiring consultants and contractors to have project management systems that conform to ISO 9001 because it ensuresaconsistentapproachtoproductdelivery. THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS

PB delivers professional services that include: planning; design (drawings, specifications, cost estimates); project management; program management, engineering/scientific consultancy; and construction management services. It is essential that these services meet client and PB requirements. This means that all contractcommitmentsaremet,andallservicesareprovidedinaprofessionalmanner and executed with the utmost regard for the protection of public health, welfare and safety. The implementation of PBs formal quality management system ensures that theseobjectivesaremetandtheISO9001processprovidesfurtherassurancethatour qualitysystemworks.
