Developing Narrative Skills A program for 6 to 8 year olds.

This learning resource contains a instructional manual, 11 colour narrative structure A4 cards and a story narrratives A3 colour poster. The narrative program has been specifically designed for 6 to 8 year olds and is the third in a series of four resources. Research reports that narrative ability correlates with literacy and academic achievement. In addition, narrative programs typically enhance comprehension and written expression ability.

Instructional Manual

Designed by Speech Pathologists, the program empowers educators with a process that explicitly instructs this vital skill. The program presents a range of narrative tasks in the order of ascending complexity (i.e. pre-narrative, oral narrative retells, written narrative retells and finally narrative generation tasks). The manual outlines how to instruct 6 to 8 year old narrative ability and recommends over 45 suitable picture books. It includes summaries on how the narrative structure relates to each book. Narrative Story Structure for Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell


The text below outlines the language model teachers should provide for students aged between 6 to 8 years. Students of this age should be able to produce a retell containing the introduction, a problem, insights into the character(s) feelings/thoughts, three events and an ending.

Beginning
When? Once upon a time Who? a duck What? lived and worked Where? on a farm in the country. Remember: Ask the children to recall at least 5 jobs (household or farm based) that the duck attended to.

They waited until it was nearly dawn/sun rise. The animals quietly crept into the house and up the stairs. They climbed under the farmers bed so that they could push him out of bed and then chased him off the farm.

The next morning the animals found the duck (by himself as usual doing his jobs) and explained that the farmer was longer on the farm.
