A local lung cancer survivor is
striving to erase the stigmas at-
tached to the cancer and to raise
some money for a good cause at
the same time.
Heather Geraghty, 24, is a lung
cancer survivor after having two-
thirds of her right lung removed
just 23 days after being diagnosed
with the disease in December of
2010. Geraghty will be hosting her
own fund raiser to raise money
for the LUNGevity Foundation.
The event will be held at Caf
Fontanas at 30 E. Main St. in
Maple Shade from 7 to 10 p.m.
Tickets are $50 per person, and
will include a dinner buffet, draft
beer and wine. Door prizes will be
given to the first 200 attendees,
which include a Cure Lung Can-
cer wristband and entry into a
raffle for a $50 gift card for Caf
Madison in Riverside. In addi-
tion, music, a 50/50 cash raffle
and Chinese auction will be avail-
able.
Geraghty discovered a problem
on December 12, 2010, when she
experienced persistent chest
pain. Early the next day she re-
ceived a CAT scan at the Kennedy
Hospital Emergency Room,
which showed a mass in the mid-
dle lobe of the right lung. On Dec.
28, 2010, after a series of nonsur-
gical procedures, a biopsy deter-
mined the mass to be a non-cell
malignant tumor called mucoepi-
dermoid carcinoma. On Jan. 20,
2011, Dr. Joel Cooper of Universi-
ty of Pennsylvania removed two-
thirds of Geraghtys right lung.
Proceeds will benefit the
LUNGevity Foundation. The
foundation, according to its mis-
sion statement, tries to provide a
meaningful and immediate im-
pact on improving lung cancer
survival rates, ensuring a higher
quality of life for lung cancer pa-
tients, and providing a communi-
ty for those impacted by lung can-
cer.

It was a victory for open space
enthusiasts in Moorestown Town-
ship, as one of the larger working
farms in Moorestown will be pre-
served as open space for countless
generations to come.
Members of the Moorestown
Township Council unanimously
agreed to preserve the 42-acre
Browning-Hess Farm on Lenola
Road at a recent council meeting.
The township agreed to pay 20
percent of the cost to acquire the
property a little more than
$467,300 for Burlington County
and to preserve it for open space.
The township funding will come
from the Moorestown Open
Space, Recreation, Farmland and
Historic Preservation Trust
Fund.
Burlington County will pay for
the remaining 80 percent of the
preservation.
The Browning-Hess farm will
be preserved for open space
through Burlington Countys
farmland preservation program.
The township has been pursuing
this course of action for at least
the past year, Mayor John Button
said.
Its phenomenal for a lot of
reasons. We have very little open
space so to speak, or preserved
farmland, on the west side of
town. Its seven generations old
and originally they were down
the street a little bit. They really
wanted it to be preserved for all
those reasons, he said. Were
very close to Philadelphia, yet we
have an all American main street
with lots of open space and farm-
land. Its a terrific place to live.
The open space fund was estab-
lished for a variety of uses, this is
one of those great uses.
The seventh-generation farm
has long been a signature piece of
property in Moorestown, Button
said.
The members of council ap-
proved the measure unanimously
and the assembled crowd gave the
approval a long round of ap-
plause.
Debbie Hess, who owns the
farm with her husband David,
said it was a long time coming for
the oldest working farm in
Moorestown Township.
Were absolutely thrilled. Its
a dream come true for us, she
said.

ly looking at several other pieces

Best of the bunch
As the summer vacation is now
in full swing, we wanted to take
an opportunity to wish everyone
a happy, healthy season and pro-
vide an update regarding our on-
going contract negotiations with
the Moorestown Education Asso-
ciation. It has come to our atten-
tion that there is some misunder-
standing and/or misinformation
circulating in the community as
it relates to these negotiations. To
help clarify the board of educa-
tions position and the underlying
facts of the matter, we are releas-
ing this summary in conjunction
with the complete background in-
formation presented by the board
to the state appointed fact finder
and posted on the MTPS Web site.
No one is more interested in
finding a fair settlement than the
members of the board of educa-
tion. There is no gain in prolong-
ing negotiations. In our attempts
to find a settlement, both the
board and the MEA met an un-
precedented 16 times, including
an informal meeting last week.
Unfortunately, the offers present-
ed by the board of education and
the MEA have always been, and
remain vastly divided.
One of the key drivers in the
boards position is preservation of
programs and personnel. The on-
going constriction of our budget
and the increased cost of health
benefit premiums have already
forced us to reduce staff by 83 po-
sitions over the past two years. It
is because we value the extraordi-
nary personnel who make our
school system great that we are
opposed to raising the cost of
salaries and benefits as it will
force us to make additional cuts
to cover this additional expense.
And, as of this date, we are also
uncertain of the impact the re-
cently passed bill (S2937), regard-
ing the Teachers Pension and
Annuity Fund, will have on our

Many these days are hoping to
fill their stomachs with healthy
eats by filling their dinner plates
with local, organic produce and
meats.
But the question that begs to be
asked is, Well, where did it come
from?
If you shop at the Burlington
County Farmers Market in
Moorestown, some of those eggs
or chickens, if they were still
alive, could have basically walked
to the weekly outdoor market on
their own.
Each Saturday morning, Joann
Darmo, along with her husband,
brother and father-in-law, take
Cox Road to Hartford Road, arriv-
ing 2.1 miles from their origin
and approximately five minutes
later at 500 Centerton Rd., the site
of the Burlington County Com-
munity Agricultural Center,
home of the market, now in its
fifth year.
The Darmos children are part
of the fifth generation in the fam-
ily to work the farm.
Local is a big thing here. The
farmers market gets it the day
after its picked, Darmo said.
This is the fourth year the Dar-
mos have sold crops at the mar-
ket. If you head to the market on
Saturday, you can expect to find
the usual suspects such as toma-
toes, white corn, peppers, egg-
plant and cucumbers at their
peak from Darmos Farm. The
farm also carries peaches and
melons.
Darmo said the buying local
mentality has helped business at
the farms stand, which is open
every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Its cut down on diesel fuel,
transportation costs and time,
Darmo said. Its a big deal for
farmers and its helped us.
Is 7.7 miles still local enough
for you?
Thought so. Thats the distance
from Hunters Vegetable Farm in
Cinnaminson to the market.
The farm, owner Amy Hunter
said, has been family owned and
operated for nine consecutive
generations since 1760. The fami-
ly also operates a retail market
seven days a week at the 120-acre
farm at 1101 Union Landing Rd.
Hunter said the best tasting

Disagreement isnt
misrepresentation
I am offering a rebuttal to
Mayor John Buttons Lets Set
the Record Straight on a Few
Things. Instead of adding clari-
ty to the issue of using the Mu-
nicipal Open Space, Recreation,
and Farmland and Historic
Preservation Open Space Trust
Fund (often referred to as the
Open Space Trust Fund) for
things other than the intended
uses, Mayor Button excuses his
actions by saying that doing oth-
erwise will increase taxes. This
seems little more than a scare
tactic because no one in our
community would welcome a tax
increase in these tough econom-
ic times.
It is also ironic, because in
March and early April, Mayor
Button was leading the charge to
raise taxes for the K.I.D.S. initia-
tive through a bonding. However,
the bonding resolution did not
achieve the necessary four votes.
The mayor fails to make the real-
ization that he wouldnt need to
raise taxes or raid the Open
Space Trust Fund if he explores
other means to pay for the
K.I.D.S. initiative, including pri-
vate fund-raising, such as was
done with the Fullerton Park ef-
fort.
The mayor states that the
Moorestown Open Space Trust
Fund clearly implies a variety
of permitted uses (including
the K.I.D.S. initiative). This legal
interpretation was made by the
township solicitor. It is a legal
opinion and not legal fact. Legal
fact is established by a court of
law. Because a significant num-
ber of Moorestown voters dis-
agree with this legal opinion,
they are not misrepresenting
the facts. They simply disagree
with the legal opinion formulat-
ed to justify councils action. The
interpretative statement on the
2007 ballot referendum, which
was the guiding interpretation
for voters, gives a different inter-
pretation.
We are entitled to our opinion,
and just because it does not
agree with yours, we are not mis-
representing the facts. I am very
disappointed that you continue
to accuse a large number of
Moorestown residents of mis-
representing the facts, and ask
that you cease.
Given the 2007 referendum in-
terpretative statement, which
you continue to ignore, we con-
tend that the overwhelming
amount of Moorestown voters
did not approve of the 2007 Open
Space referendum with the ex-
pectation that these funds would
be used for artificial fields, score-
boards, and paved parking lots.
Most voters believed and contin-
ue to believe that the phrase
recreation and conservation
strongly implies improvements
that would be consistent with
the conservation and mainte-
nance of our precious natural
resources. Artificial turf does
not do that.
Mr. Mayor, you are missing
the key point. We are disappoint-
ed that you had to spend town-
ship resources to legally finesse
the justification to use Open
Space Trust Funds for the
K.I.D.S. initiative. When you
held the requisite public hearing
on the issue, you failed to listen
to the overwhelming sentiment
of the public. Countless resi-
dents stated that they didnt care
if it was legal, because it was not
ethical, and that it was a viola-
tion of our trust in this fund.
There are no misrepresenta-
tions of the facts here.

Time for Moorestown
to take its cut
My family has lived in
Moorestown since 1972. It is a
very livable, clean, well-adminis-
tered township and we have en-
joyed every moment.
Several years ago a referen-
dum was held regarding liquor
sales in Moorestown. Unfortu-
nately, the proponents of the
amendment failed to properly in-
form the residents of
Moorestown that the signs,
which reflected a bill number, re-
ally involved a bill to allow
liquor sales in the township. By
such lack of information, the
referendum failed.
As most people know, the
township would benefit in the
millions of dollars if liquor sales
were allowed in Moorestown. In

Peace no more
No longer a wonderful life in Trenton
R
emember way back when, oh, a couple of weeks ago,
when Democrat and Republican leaders in Trenton
joined hands and sang We Are the World?
Remember the good times? The times when everyone got
along? That new era of bi-parti-
sanship that would see politi-
cians from across the spectrum
standing shoulder-to-shoulder
to right the wrongs of our
world?
Umm. Nevermind.
The irrational exuberance
that we witnessed when a deal was reached on state worker
health and pension benefits all went away when Gov. Christie
vetoed a bill and Senate President Stephen Sweeney best bud-
dies only hours before called the governor a bunch of names.
Among the names were punk and Mr. Potter from Its a
Wonderful Life.
You may be hearing bells right now, but nobody is getting any
wings.
Sweeney was upset because he took the governors veto per-
sonally. The Early Intervention System was one of the cuts. Ac-
cording to NorthJersey.com, Sweeneys daughter benefited
from that program.
Was Sweeney over the top with his comments? Of course. But
its hard to knock someone for such an honest response. Our
guess it was more Dad than Senate President saying those
things.
The political maneuverings will play out. There may be an at-
tempt to override the veto. There may not be. Such an attempt
might be successful or not. And maybe the spirit of cooper-
ation has disappeared. At least for now.
But passion is a good thing. Standing up and fighting for
what you believe in is a good thing.
Perhaps there are ways to channel that passion in ways that
can bring us back around to righting some of those wrongs.

subsequent years, the township
would receive licensing fees on an
annual basis. At this time, the
Township of Mt. Laurel benefits
from liquor sales to Moorestown
residents and not the Township of
Moorestown. In these recessive
economic times, and the high real
estate taxes which the
Moorestown residents bear with
great resolution, the township
can easily and beneficially use
liquor sales licensing fees in a
number of way including the re-
duction of real property taxes.
I hope that the proponents of
the new liquor sales amendment
in Moorestown commence a cam-

aghty said she is hoping to edu-
cate people about lung cancer and
to erase the negative stigmas that
come along with the disease.
Many people, she said, when they
hear about lung cancer immedi-
ately think that it was brought
from smoking and deserved.
This is just so important for
people to know about. A lot of
people who have experienced it or
know someone who has experi-
enced it are afraid to come out
and talk about it, she said. The
stigmas are so strong with this
disease. Nobody is every blamed
for having diabetes, but people be-
lieve that lung cancer is brought
upon themselves. I didnt get lung
cancer from being a smoker.

district.
As presented in our materials
provided to the fact finder, the
Board of Educations proposal to
the MEA is a contract containing
salary increases of 0 percent in
2010-11, 2 percent in 2011-12, and 2
percent in 2012-13. In addition, the
district would change to the Di-
rect 15 health plan and allow em-
ployees to buy up to a more ex-
pensive plan if they so choose.
The health plan proposed by the
board of education does include a
prescription drug plan that auto-
matically reimburses members 90
percent of drug costs, usually
within 21 days.
Our calculation of net cost of
the board of educations proposal
was $2.5 million across three
years. If agreed upon, the cost
would fall within the overall pa-
rameters of the board of educa-
tions budget and the impact on
personnel and programs would
be minimized. The MEAs propos-
al included salary increases of
3.96 percent in 2010-11, 3.5 percent
in 2011-12, and 3.73 percent in
2012-13. In addition, they request
the district provide a private pre-
scription drug card. Our calcula-
tion of net cost of the MEAs pro-
posal was $5.8 million across
three years. Both this, and the
board of educations, calculations
include an assumption that
health care costs will increase 12
percent per annum. If accepted,
the board of education would be
forced to make significant cuts in
personnel and programs to meet
this cost. This could result in the
loss of curriculum and extra -
curricular programs, increased
class size, and cutbacks in servic-
es. To illustrate the positions of
both the board of education and
the MEA, we have created a table,
available at www.mtps.com.
As shown in this comparison,
the difference in cost between the
board of educations proposal and
the MEAs proposal is $3,314,007.
Increasing taxes cannot bridge
this divide. Per the state mandat-
ed cap of 2 percent, the districts
ability to increase revenue via tax
levy has been cut in half. Nor will
additional state aid cover this
gap. The fundamental truth is
that if we increase salary and
benefit costs by too great a mar-
gin it will come at the cost of pro-
grams and personnel. The board
of education values the excep-
tional teaching and support staff.
Accepting the MEAs proposal
would force us to cut programs
and reduce staff eliminating
many of the caring and talented
employees who have helped make
Moorestowns public schools one
of the best in the state. As elected
representatives of the communi-
ty, it is incumbent on the board of
education to represent and fight
for the best interest of the whole
Moorestown community. Our po-
sition throughout these negotia-
tions has been to offer proposals
that address the needs of all con-
stituents, while mindful of the
current economic situation.
At this stage in the negotia-
tions process, both the board of
education and the MEA have pre-
sented our information to the
fact finder. We hope to receive an
opinion this summer and expect
that it will provide the impartial
analysis of the financial reality of
the situation that will help estab-
lish a common ground from
which a settlement can be
reached. We value the trust the
community has placed in us and
we are working diligently to re-
solve this matter. We understand
your concern and appreciate your
patience.
The Moorestown Board of Educa-
tion.

are corn, cantaloupes and water-
melons. She said her family
brings an array of other vegeta-
bles to the farmers market each
week, too.
Buying local its the freshest
flavor. The corn gets to
Moorestown when it was picked
that morning, Hunter said. It
also puts local food money back
into the community.
The farmers market currently
hosts 20 local agricultural ven-
dors, with neighborhood farms
like Darmos and Little Hooves
Romneys, which sells fresh lamb,
eggs and fleece, all the way to
Princeton and Kennett Square,
Pa.
Other local vendors include
Busy Bee Farm, which special-
izes in pesticide-free lavender,
herbs and native plants. The farm
is located 15 miles away from the
market at 80 Patty Bowker Rd.,
Tabernacle.
Another Tabernacle vendor, Si-
mons Berry Farm, a fifth genera-
tion farm specializing in the pro-
duction of cranberries and blue-
berries, is providing the market
with fresh fruit, grown about 20
miles away. The farm is located at
108 Moores Meadow Rd.
And if you need a handmade
broom, stop by The Jersey Jerry
Broomsquire, who travels from
neighboring Mt. Laurel to the
market. The market is open every
Saturday until Oct. 29, from 8:30
a.m. to 1 p.m.

Do they not understand
that no means no?
Here we go again! The liquor in
Moorestown issue has already
been voted down twice by the peo-
ple. Do we have to have the same
question on the ballot every five
years until enough people who
dont know better finally get it
passed?
This is agenda pushing stupidi-
ty at its best. I certainly hope the
town council will refuse to put it
on the ballots in the future.
The whole argument for the li-
cense is foolish. If the restaurants
in question cant attract cus-
tomers without liquor, they need
new cooks and not booze. Besides,
almost every restaurant will
allow folks to B.Y.O. (bring your
own). If you like an alcoholic
drink with your meal, you al-
ready have the means. Keep
Moorestown dry.

Michael Iaquinto, an Edward
Jones financial advisor in
Moorestown, is supporting the
Moorestown School District by
using his office as a drop-off loca-
tion for a school supplies drive.
Local residents and businesses
may help those less fortunate in
the community by bringing in
items to the Edward Jones branch
office during regular business
hours now through Sept. 7.
Were asking Moorestown res-
idents to donate school supplies
or volunteer their time, Iaquinto
said. These donations can add
value as one more student will be
provided with the appropriate
tools to begin or continue his or
her learning and development.
