2. Title of the Proposed Project.

Polymer Structured Cost Effective Walk-in Tunnels for Off -season vegetable production in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The world population is increasing rapidly. Cultivable area is decreasing day by day. Productivity of land has become stable. So we need a technology which gives more production per unit area. The population of the province crossed figure of 24 million this year which was at 5.500 million on independence. Annual growth rate varies from 2.33 to 3% per annum. Agriculture land is being squeezed due to its conversion from agricultural to commercial lands. Productive units are being converted in to commercial plazas. Food insecurity is ahead like a monster to swallow the needs of the inhabitants. Thats why it felt necessary to propose the said project. A project namely Off Season Vegetable

3. Proponent Information

Production through Walk-in Tunnels in Ten vegetable growing Districts of NWFP was approved under an umbrella project viz Agri-business development and diversification project. The aim and objective of the project was to build high roof tunnels in the farmers land with a ratio of 30:70 percent cost sharing (30% of the farmer share and 70%project share). High roof tunnel with a structure of GP pipe was a high cost project as one tunnel with the specifications mentioned in that project was at a cost of Rs. 1,00,000 to 1,25,000 per tunnel and there were 8~10 tunnels per acre.

If cost of one acre land to be covered with commercial based, high roof tunnels, calculated, it came to Rs. 8,00,000.00 to Rs. 10,00,000.00 per acre which definitely was beyond the financial approach of a poor farmer. It was keenly observed that the small land holding farmer even could not bear 30% share of the tunnel in that project. On a survey and meeting with a number of companies involved in construction of walk-in tunnel technology and experience sharing with the farmers using tunnel technology, it revealed that use of polymer structured tunnels are not only cost effective and with in the financial capacity of an average farmer but is also easy to move any where. The cost of a 14 tunnels in an acre sizing 200x12x6 comes to Rs. 1,50,000~1,75,000. The proposed project is designed as a medium size off-season vegetable farming unit, spreading over a land area of 11 acres. Off-season vegetables, such as, tomatoes, cucumber, brinjal, hot pepper, sweet peppers and watermelon can be cultivated viably using low cost tunnel technology. However for our convenience we have restricted our study for only the crop of Capsicum. The land can be utilized for green farming during the idle period to maintain the fertility of soil. Apart from green farming, the land can also be utilized for growing season al vegetables like potato, carrot, onion, garlic and cabbage etc., in the idle period, but this may affect the fertility of the land, resulting in reduction of yield of off-season vegetables. Therefore it is recommended that only off-season vegetables should be grown on the proposed land, with a

well chalked out sowing pattern. The estimated yield potential of the farm varies according to the selected type of vegetable. Green farming is done to maintain the fertility of the land with the help of any legume crop. When the crop is matured it is then incorporated in soil with the help of a Rotavator. What is Green House technology?
1. Green house technology provides a controlled and favourable environment for the crops to grow and yield high in all the seasons. 2. Saves crops from cold in winter, from heat in summer and from rain in monsoon. 3. Environment can be changed according to the need of the crop.

4. Goals & Objectives set to be achieved.

OVERALL OBJECTIVES

The need to protect crops against the unfavourable environmental conditions led to the development of protected cultivation practices. Plant growth is limited in certain climatic conditions either all through out the year or during part of the year because of adverse climatic conditions. The use of Walk-in Plastic Tunnel (W.P.T) is one such technology, which is being used for raising seedlings and commercial vegetable crop production in many countries. The winter season is of short duration, failure to raise nursery in time causes delay in transplanting and thereby poor growth and low productivity of winter crops.

The project will include the following main objectives leading to diversify the agribusiness resultantly improvement in socio economic conditions of the hard living farming community and to boost the productivity fetching higher prices using WPT. Introduction of off season vegetables and demonstration of the polymer tunnels will be provided to farmers in the site selected by the agriculture extension department which will provide a breakthrough in popularizing the technology and the socio economic benefit to farmers and also to earn the foreign exchange by exporting the off season vegetables. The technology provided will be a support to farmers to adopt it effectively and get the income from the land. Establishment of a link/ channel of all the stake holders so the farmers problems will be minimized. Efforts will be made to train farmers in controlling the insect pest attacks on off season vegetables grown in Walk in Plastic Tunnels. .
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

To construct 70 polymer structured walk-in tunnels in each year. The tunnels would be constructed on 210 acres having 14 Nos. tunnels / acre or 2940 tunnels during project period.

5. Rational for ADP Funding.

An amount of Rs. 38.892 million is required to be funded from ADP source. Detail of costs involved are annexed with the paper. For 12 Vegetable growing districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

6. Geographical Coverage (For whole province or specific district/tehsil) 7. Is Project aligned with CDS? 8. Nearest place where similar facility is available.

Yes. As mentioned above a project viz Off season vegetable production through walk-in plastic tunnel in 10 vegetable growing districts was launched under an umbrella project namely Agribusiness Development and Diversification Project which was funded by Federal Government was launched for a period of 3 years (2006 07 to 2008-09). As funds could not be got released during its 1 st year due to some technical problems, the project got its start in the next year i.e. 200708. Now the project has completed its phase. The tunnels constructed under the said project was GP pipe structured with a high cost which was beyond the affordability of a common grower. Secondly the physical target of the project was construction of 180 tunnels which covered 22~24 acres so the beneficiaries remained very low in number and the purpose of dissemination of technology and its demonstration for adoption by a common people could not be achieved in full. The Polymer structured tunnels are not only economical yet its adoption and accessibility would be greater than the tunnel of GP pipe already constructed. Secondly a renown company Engro Polymer & Chemicals Limited having suffic exprience and technical support in the field will assist the project and will provide training facilities through its staff free of cost.
