Better cycle parking facilities

Our last survey showed a good level of support for secure on-street cycle parking in the neighbourhood. This would be a facility where your bike could be stored overnight behind lock and key. Some residents told us that the facility would prevent their bicycle from being stolen whilst others said it would mean not having to carry their bicycle up several flights of stairs. Residents in Morat Street, Liberty Street, Hackford Road and Cranworth Gardens were most in favour of on-street cycle parking and we plan to introduce a unit in each of these roads if there is sufficient demand. Each unit would:

Streets for People

store up to 14 bicycles be available for residents who do not have somewhere safe to store their bicycle (priority would also be given to residents who are willing to give up their car parking permit) be approximately 1-2 parking bays long and be fixed on the road opening out onto the pavement

Generally speaking the facility would cost around 5 a month to use. This cost would cover the fees for an external company to manage and maintain the unit. However, we are currently looking at various options including local housing providers or the community taking ownership. This could reduce the cost. Please let us know if you would like to get involved via the questionnaire.

Following our initial consultation events last year the Grass Routes Steering Group* have been working up some exciting design ideas for the neighbourhood based on your feedback. This leaflet and questionnaire explain the proposals and are a chance for you to help us develop the final design. Please return your questionnaire to us free of charge by Friday 29 July 2011. To find out more about the Grass Routes Project please come to our outdoor exhibition on Saturday 16 July between 11am to 2pm outside the Londis store located at 70-74 Caldwell Street. If you would like more information please contact Patricia Witter on 020 7926 2320 or at pwitter2@lambeth.gov.uk. Our website address is www.lambeth.gov.uk/grassroutes. *The Grass Routes Steering Group is made up of Caldwell Gardens TRA, Lambeth Council, Streets Ahead, Reay and Durand primary schools, Hyde Southbank and London and Quadrant Housing Associations, and your ward local councillors.

D. Cleaner streets
Several of you complained about the cleanliness of the streets and in particular the issue of dog fouling on the pavements. We will be installing more bins in the area. We have also passed your feedback onto our StreetCare team. If you would like to report any problems with street cleaning please contact our Streetcare and cleaning team on 020 7926 9000 or email StreetCareCallCentre@lambeth.gov.uk. Its now time to fill out your questionnaire and tell us what you think of our plans. Please return your questionnaire by Friday 29 July 2011.

Those of you who responded to our consultation last year told us you wanted: A. B. C. D. more greenery and a new community space in Isabel Street lower traffic speeds and better crossing facilities better cycle parking facilities cleaner streets

B. Lower traffic speeds and better crossing facilities

You asked that we lower vehicles speeds. To do this we want to make the neighbourhood a 20mph zone. This would make the environment safer and more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists. Drivers would also benefit by having more time to react to other road users. We have extended the project area north and south of Hackford Road as this creates a logical boundary for a 20mph zone. 20mph zones must be self-enforcing and therefore we would need to introduce traffic calming measures on some streets to slow drivers and to encourage a consistently low speed throughout. We have carried out a traffic survey to identify the streets where traffic calming measures are essential. These streets are shown on the A3 map in pink and the plans are described here.

We have used your priorities to develop some plans which are explained here.

A. More greenery and a new community space in Isabel Street

The clear message from last years consultation is that you would like more greenery in the neighbourhood. We plan to increase the number of trees on some streets by extending the pavement into the road and planting trees (please see section B build-outs). We also plan to create a pedestrianised green community space in Isabel Street framed around the areas connection to Vincent Van Gogh who lived in Hackford Road between 1873-1874.

Caldwell Street would have a raised zebra crossing to slow speeds and provide a safe crossing point for children at Reay Primary School. Cycle friendly humps would also be introduced along the road to consistently reduce the speed of traffic. Hillyard Street would have a raised table or build-out at the junction with Cranworth Gardens. Please tell us your preference using the questionnaire. Southey Road would have a raised table or build-out at the junction with Cranworth Gardens. Please tell us your preference using the questionnaire.

The neighbourhood where I live is quite beautiful, and so quiet and intimate that you almost forget you are in London.
Vincent Van Gogh Isabel Street would be greened with olive and almond trees which both featured in Van Goghs paintings as well as plants and herbs such as rosemary and thyme. The front image on this leaflet shows how Isabel Street could look and the layout is shown in more detail on the back of the A3 map enclosed. The main aspects are also described here. Isabel Street would:

The streets highlighted in green on the A3 map have relatively low speeds and could have raised build-outs with trees. Each build-out would be approximately 2 metres in length. We work closely with the emergency services and develop projects with their input. The emergency services recognise that traffic calming helps save lives. For more general information on 20mph zones please contact us.

be greened with trees, plants and herbs be flush so that the road would be at the same level as the pavement. This would be extended into the junctions with Liberty Street and Hackford Road have an infant area with some play equipment have an area for ball games for older children have seating for people to meet and enjoy the space

Isabel Street would be access only for Morat Street residents who could exit into Hackford Road via Isabel Street. There would be no vehicle access from Liberty Street into Isabel Street. Vehicles would still be able to drive up and down the full length of Liberty Street and Hackford Road. Example of a raised zebra crossing Example of a cycle friendly road hump
