new world record italian Bm4-: not our strongest race

Strong tailwind? no, the weather conditions were not extraordinarily fast. Wednesdays new world record of the italian coxless four is therefore all due to their own effort.

According to Simone Ponti, one the crewmembers of the coxless four, the Italians did not put all their power in yesterdays race. We had a good start and at the 1000 meter mark we were already so far ahead that we lowered our rating and lengthened our strokes. That this would result in a new world best time we really did not expect. The previous record of 5:52.47 was improved by almost a second to 5:52.57. The fact that this is only the first day of the WU23 promises good things for the rest of the championships. We are very happy, but we havent given our best yet, and perhaps our competitors have done the same thing. On Thursday we will have a light training session so we can race on full power in the semis on Friday.

The netherlands

First day, fast times

In this first daily news The Netherlands, the organising country, is in the spotlight. In order to have a good preparation to the World Championships in 2014, the organisation has done everything to make a success of this tournament. As usual with the hosting country, the Low Countries have entered many crews. This quantity of boats, however, does not do wrong to the quality of the competitors. Much is expected from the BM2x, of which the stroke already took part in the single scull at the WU23CH last year. Moreover there will be beautiful chances for the sweeping ladies in both the BW2-, who won their heat easily on Wednesday, and the BW4- who already rowed fast earlier in the season. Finally, all these the Dutch ladies will start in the BW8+ on Sunday, in which trump Kirsten Wielaard will also take a seat. More than 1/3 of the Dutch team was part of the juniors team in the past. The other 2/3 are (former) student rowers. Within a few years, these young people have developed into athletes that can measure themselves internationally during this tournament.

Yesterday, the first races gave a spectacular kick-off to the WU23. only four boat categories raced their heats, yet times came very close to the current world records. Italy set a time of 5:52.57 in the BM4-, 1.47 seconds faster than then old world best time set by the Germans in 2005. With this new record they made a big statement towards the competition. Germany also came very close the world record in the BLM4x. Their time of 5:49.88 was a mere 2 hundreds of a second slower

than the world best time. In the BW2Americans Grace Luczak and Felice Mueller set a time of 7:15.53 and were 1.46 seconds slower than the world record that was set by Mueller (with another partner) last year. The day ended with the official opening of the tournament. A march of rowers carrying an oar with their nations blade and enthousiastic speeches welcomed all athletes and supporters. The worlds best jump rope players warmed up the rowers for the tournament.
