GOI

GO-I

While listening to a whole lot of people I have been struck by the recurrence of one theme : We are constantly focused on our Goals, Outcome, Intention and also involved in judging the Intentions of others at a conscious and subconscious level.

Goals, Outcome, Intention

There seemed to be a lot of overlap and sometimes even some confusion regarding the difference within the three terms: Goals, Outcome, Intention. It made me explore in the last few years this whole issue of Intention.. and to my surprise, there has been serious consideration of this topic and many references from the ancient Scriptures, to the great Philosophers in Medieval times to the latest research by Neuroscientists. It would be an impossible task to even summarize here the various points of view. I will try and take a simple, everyday approach. I have experienced this to be a healthy, balanced and quite often - stunningly miraculous approach. I have
Allowing Success to Manifest

received similar feedback from many others who have played with this. I must say that there is nothing new here. However, it could serve as a simple reminder or offer a new perspective on what we already know. I share this here for your consideration and I hope that some of you find this useful.

Forming An Intention

Let us think of a scenario in a game of cricket.. The batsman has just hit a ball up in the air and there is a lone fielder in that region. The fielder looks up at the ball and forms the intention to catch it.. I want to catch the ball. I intend catching the ball.. And at that point in time the process of logical thinking stops.

Allowing Success to Manifest

page 6

Earlier, his Goal might have been to get this particular batsman out, and the outcome he had desired might have been to make a winning catch for his team. At that moment he is neither focused on the Goal nor on the Outcome. He has an Intention to catch the ball. The process of logical thinking is not involved at all. The fielders Mind cannot factor in the force with which the ball was hit, the trajectory of the moving object, the velocity and direction of the wind that day or his own speed. All those factors get into the act automatically and he finds himself at the right spot at the right time to receive the falling ball. Of course he has to be passionate about his game, needs to be in shape and have practiced at his craft. But he could not have used his logic and mind to work out a solution. There are so many variables at work here: The force with which the ball is struck, the angle at which it rises up, the force of the wind that day, the speed at which the fielder takes off, the distance he has to judge and so on If any of these variables change during the effort, the fielders body has to adjust and accommodate those changes. Most of this occurs automatically in split seconds without any conscious control on his part. It is taken care of by an in-built corrective mechanism which aligns to his intention. It may not, however, work perfectly on every occasion.

Zooming Out

Several experts who have studied Intentionality advise us to be very specific and articulate what we want, visualize it in its finest details, have pictures and imagery of it around us, experience it in our imagination as if it has already happened thus sending signals to the brain and out into the Universe for its manifestation and then let go and allow... This seems to work beautifully for some and partially for others - works for a while and then they feel stuck and frustrated. If you are one of them, it is like Damn, I am doing everything they are saying.. What is wrong? What am I missing? Why isnt this thing working for me?

A Buddhist Monk gives an example to illustrate a point: "I have been practicing mindfulness breathing for 20 years and no, I dont get any peace.. but Sandy there is so
Allowing Success to Manifest page 8

peaceful.. How does she do it..? Maybe I should do more of it 10,000 mindful breaths every day I can get a PhD in in-breaths and out-breaths..! Pretty soon Ill hyperventilate and pass out..!!"

765 5,698. 9,871.

Obviously, it is not about the focus on the number or the quality of breaths you take - however diligent and sincere the effort. It is about bringing ones attention to something that is happening in the present moment the breath and the benefit of practicing disengaging from the rattle going on in the head - thereby bringing ones attention to the Here and Now. One is then more available to Life. Another one: I am in this hole and I am pretty sure there is a way out. I havent got my eyes open, so I walk forward and bash
http://heal-empower.com 9

into a wall and say: Oh.. that didnt work.. And try that again.. I bash into the wall and, Hmm.. it didnt work.. Ill try it again.. bash into the wall.. Oh-oh.. Didnt work.. try it again.. We keep going, keep going and keep going.. Sooner or later I am bound to find a way through.! But all I need to do is feel my way through the wall, find the light switch, turn the light on and walk through the door! It can save me a lot of nose bleeds and cracks on the head - a lot of needless discomfort. We may pick up a particular approach/concept/method that are based in the finer components of a healthy, joyous and successful living experience. And then blindly go do it without paying mindful attention to what is going on. At times, we may just need to zoom out a bit. Scott cannot make an edible dish by just throwing in all the ingredients from the recipe book straight into the pan. Sure, something will come out as an end product.. but..! The ingredients in the right measure, the sequence in which they are added, some mixed together and marinated for a while.. full fire.. slow fire.. let it simmer for a bit.. It is a fascinating process and requires one to pay alert attention.

This Moment

This Moment

When we choose to direct our Mind towards a particular object of our attention we are forming an Intention. We can state an Intention in a simple short sentence/thought. But we usually dont or are unable to do so. More often, we have a fuzzy idea of what we want, are unable to state it directly and it is mixed up with a lot of other wants and feelings. We are also not clear about the reason behind this Intention. We may say, I want to be a great author, but not acknowledge that we are really seeking fame and fortune. We may say, I want to help a lot of people, but not acknowledge that we are really wanting to escape the painful feelings of dealing with existing relationships and situations. Or, we may say, I want to be a movie star, and not realize that we may have a dire need to be acknowledged or admired perhaps we havent been acknowledged enough in our growing up years.. there may still be unhealed wounds

http://heal-empower.com

11

from nasty past experiences, subconscious limiting beliefs, unprocessed emotions.. or not having the inclination for self-compassion, acknowledging and experiencing some of our own talents. There may be several reasons.

Living Totally in the Now

So the first step I would take, even before formulating an intention - is to do a little introspection and clear up the fuzziness. What do I really want to experience? What activity makes me really happy? John wants to be a published author through the best publishing house; be known as the most influential writer ever; interviewed by the world media all this by September 2012. Now, lets see whether John has done any introspection. Has he asked himself if his main passion is selfexpression using the writing medium? Or is he seeking fame and fortune? Has he asked himself: What is it that I really, really want most of all? Would I do this even if it did not bring me any monetary reward (it is perfectly fine to be richly, financially rewarded for it..!)? Can I see myself doing this for a long time?
Allowing Success to Manifest page 12

Would I be willing to undergo hardships, make space in my daily schedule and even give up certain other things in order to do this? Would I encourage and support others to do this? Do I see some real value in this endeavor for others as well as for myself? And then, another important question: Having reached that state/outcome which I desire, what will I be doing from that point on? Can I name that activity? Would I still enjoy doing the same (even if I chose not to)? Perhaps John then comes up with the statement/ thought: I enjoy writing. Or: I like to share some ideas and tell stories. Or he tries a few other statements until he feels very comfortable that he has caught the essence. He feels an Aaaha.. that is it.. A sense of peacefulness and joy with just that realization sets in. Now, in that state, he takes a deep breath and speaks it out loud and clear. After that he lets go of that thought; he has sent it out into the Universe/Existence/Nature.

http://heal-empower.com

13

He realizes that the main activity, Writing, is available to him right now. He can act in the present, fully focused in the moment. He can start writing anything not necessarily the book he has in mind. He enjoys writing; it makes him feel really good when he does it. He engages in that activity right here, right now. He now gets away from the idea and the mode of Becoming (in the future). John does need to do one more thing. He needs to trust that Universal Creative Energy that has an inbuilt mechanism to find and pull together the unlimited resources that make things happen. Our mind, however wonderful its capabilities, cannot match this Force. Let us consider another example: Mike has a natural talent to teach art in unique and creative ways. Everyone encouraged him to set up a Learning Center. He spent days articulating precisely the look and structure of the place, what he does there, how he feels with the bustling of students in his Center.. the smallest of details in place. He then visualized it all as if it had already

Allowing Success to Manifest

page 14

happened and then let it go. Very soon, things began to happen. People walked into his life who helped him find possible locations for his Center; he launched his website and started promoting it wherever he went. But there was no Center, yet! Months went by. He became anxious and stressed. His relationships at home suffered. His only focus was to find the funds to build his Center. It angered him when someone seemed non co-operative. He felt resentful when his friends did not loan him money. He experienced jealousy towards others who had their own learning centers. And he soon began maligning the work of others to pull them down. Some of the energy/effort shifted from the present into the future instead of remaining focused and active in the Now. He started indulging in activities that were unhealthy and non-productive. Of course it was healthy for him to make plans and work towards it. But the lucidity and flexibility to adapt to the natural unfolding of things were lost with a very tight structure.

http://heal-empower.com

15

The process became un-wholesome. A Healthy, wholesome approach would have set him on a smoother ride.

Wholesome?

Unhealthy Goal .. Here are two very subtle things to be mindful of that in the long run cause trouble as they are very cleverly disguised! To Become something: I want to become a good person. I want to be the best writer the world has ever seen. I want to be a kind and compassionate person. I want to be a good husband. I want to earn more money. I want to be enlightened. I want my heart to be more open to feelings of affection, love and care. Sounds like all are good things! To Get Rid of something: I want to get rid of my anger, jealousy, laziness, procrastination. I want to get rid of my difficulty around people. Sounds like these are good things to get rid of, dont they?!

Allowing Success to Manifest

page 16

What makes these unhealthy and problematic in the long run is a non-acceptance of the present moment I am not alright and I have to get rid of something - only then will I be acceptable. Also the focus is on.. it is me trying to become a compassionate person; it is me trying not to be angry; me trying to be rid of the fear problem; me trying to get enlightened; it is me wanting to be this and that there is a self-centered motivation that color the efforts however sincere and diligent. These are always tied up with the feelings of I, me and mine. I am feeling agitated, I need to get out... What we perceive as a Healthy Goal could perhaps be an unconscious attempt to escape from a painful situation/uncomfortable, unprocessed feelings. The energy behind the Intention becomes clouded. It is not very easy then to realize what is happening around us and to others in our surrounding during this self centered pursuit - thus causing us and others more disharmony and pain in the long run. If, however, one brings in Acknowledgment and Awareness of what is really going on, the very same Goals can be Healthy! Just the Awareness of it instantly brings about a new texture to the way one would look at things. With more acceptance of oneself in the present moment, one can set up Goals that generate a Healthy Intention an

http://heal-empower.com

17

thus, a Healthier Process. The result then does not generate as much pain or suffering. It leads to more joy, ease, flow and peacefulness Which is what we all want, isnt it? What is the point if we have that beautiful home, but living there does not fill the void of loneliness? What is the point if we achieve what we intend but are unable to enjoy the experience? When we are thirsty and wish to drink a glass of water, we choose to point and direct our minds to a Goal and Intend its fruitful achievement. We realize that we are thirsty. We may perhaps get up, walk towards another room, get a glass, pour water into it and drink from it. We not only direct our mind towards the achievement of it but also put in the required effort.. rather easily. If we use glassware and would like to use silverware, work towards it and someday go get it, that is fine. It seems healthy. However, if we cannot enjoy the glassware while it is there and feel dissatisfied until we get the silverware to drink the water from. well, we are in trouble! I wish to be a published author. I want to travel and teach around the globe. I want to enjoy a loving, harmonious relationship not because I dont like the pain or incompleteness I experience now. I want it because I want to direct and focus my energy to this new experience..
Allowing Success to Manifest page 18

This is Wholesome. This is Healthy. The Process is more Harmonious. The Process and unfolding of these Goals can be a healthy experience if we bring in acknowledgment of the real reasons.. and it can come together along the way. Choosing, directing and pointing the mind in this way and the effort that follow it come from a wholesome, balanced place. The Intention is Healthy.

Intend To Act, Act As Intended

Do take a look at this Re-frame. Instead of focusing on the Goal Process- Outcome model, let us do a re-frame. Goal Intention Action in the Present - Outcome

http://heal-empower.com

19

A Goal
I wish to write a book.

An Outcome
I want my book to be picked up by the best publisher, earn $millions, win the Booker Prize.. I want to be the CEO of a company that is progressive, has offices in 60 countries, travel around the globe I want a happy married life, have wonderful kids, have fun and laughter.. I want to be loved, cared for, supported, go out on group holidays, have great conversations.. I want to perform at the most prestigious event and win accolades.. I want a house in Paris, with 2 large swimming pools, a private organic garden

An Intention
I like to share my ideas.

I want to head an organization.

I like to share my progressive, leadership qualities and ideas. I enjoy sharing and experiencing my life with another.

I want a good relationship with my spouse.

I want to have more friends.

I love to engage with like-minded people.

I want to be a singer.

I enjoy expressing and emoting through my voice.

I want to own a house.

I enjoy my living space.

Allowing Success to Manifest

page 20

The Intentions stated can be put into action immediately. The more I do it (practice it), the better I feel, get good at it and am inspired to do even more of it. There is no painful effort - rather a Healthy directing of the mind. Universal Creative Energy that has an inbuilt mechanism is then left free to find and pull together the unlimited resources that make things happen moment by moment. I call it Amazing Grace.. Maya, a young lady presently employed as a school teacher deeply desires to become a famous movie star. After a period of reflection she realizes that she is trying to fill a void in her, an unfulfilled need to express her deepest emotions, to be acknowledged, respected and admired. She then attempts to re-frame her Goal and says: I enjoy expressing my emotions through various roles.. I love acting and playing different roles.. I also enjoy watching others do the same.. She sees the opportunity of having enthusiastic talent right in front of her. She gets together a group of students and teachers, and puts on wonderful plays and concerts. She also joins a community that does the same.

http://heal-empower.com

21

She is able to find her own avenue of self expression. She helps others find the same and participates in their expressions. She is on the way, instead of wishing, hoping and waiting to be discovered

Allowing Success to Manifest

page 22

page 23

So

So

In my observation and experience, there is a serious downside with the approach of desiring a very specific Outcome. I realize that am going on and on about this like a stuck record player.. !

Action For Present, or Future

I am going to Rain city next week..

http://heal-empower.com

23

Huh? But you are in Pleasant Weather city right now..!

Articulating the end result - what we want, visualizing in its finest details and experiencing it in our imagination as if it has already happened exactly the way we want it to be has its pitfalls: We could become very attached to the outcome like a chewed bubble gum sticking to our fiingers! We could be focused on the future and be caught in a spinning web of expectations. Not being able to stay detached from the final stated outcome we experience being anxious, fearful, restless and remain stressed in the present moment. We put life on hold, waiting for that big thing to happen. Everything else that is going on in our lives get the round pause button with two bars marked on it, leaving us and others frustrated and suspended in air.

Allowing Success to Manifest

page 24

page 25 We see signs of possibilities and in the ecstasy that follows, build castles in our heads using half a dozen red bricks! Without fully engaging in the present moment for what it is, we shoot off taking action on what we think is going to happen. We end up feeling confused and disappointed when it does not lead to that big thing we have been waiting for. We get caught-up in doubt, uncertainty, questioning, misgivings, jealous reactions to others success.. I have found EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique, TAT -Tapas Acupressure Technique, Meditation, Mindfulness and Awareness practice as very useful and efficient practices to help address these. Anubhav (Experience) and Raahi (Traveler) were having a chat: Raahi: I cannot believe that it is finally happening. I received an email from Jack. He works for Jill. Jill owns a large publishing house. This is my big opportunity for the book I mentioned to you last year. I am working on an email giving them a glimpse of my work. As soon as they have gone through it, I will take an appointment to discuss the way forward. That done, I will start writing my big book. That shouldnt take very long. You see, I have the entire book in my head. I have just to download it. I will have to figure the writing style. It will come. I will just go withthe flow. I was also thinking of starting a
http://heal-empower.com 25

blog so there is awareness of my work even before its release. Also a page on facebook. I think I will ask my wife to do that. She is really good with these things, you know.. Anubhav: What was Jacks email about? Raahi: Oh, that was about an interview for an article he is writing. He wants my view on some questions. Anubhav: Have you responded to that? Raahi: No, I dont really have much to say on that topic it isnt my cup of tea. I am more keen to strategize with the opportunity that I see here for my book. Anubhav: Have you mentioned that to him? Raahi: About his article and interview with me? Anubhav: Yes. Raahi: No, I havent. Maybe Ill do it. I dont know. Ill go with the flow. But am working on the email introduction to my book idea. I feel there is a lot of synchronicity here. Last week, a friend mentioned that I should write to this publishing house; beginning of this week I got an email from Jack.. right in my mailbox.. Tadaa..! Anubhav: Sure; but that is about the interview. Raahi: I know, I know.. But can you see where this is going?
Allowing Success to Manifest page 26

page 27 Anubhav: No, I dont see it.. yet! Raahi: Huh?

Sometimes we think we are remaining focused and active in the present moment. We dont realize that some of the energy, effort and attention shifts from the Here and Now. This is one very subtle but important distinction about being present in the moment and playing/ engaging with the present. Maya could have gone looking for contacts that could lead her to Directors or Auditioners for her big movie break, thinking that she is engaging in the present moment. Look closer. Wouldnt that be taking action for the future? John could go looking for potential publishers for his book that he someday hopes to write, believing that he is taking action in the now. But that again, is engaging in the present moment for something focused on the future! Both Maya and John will be taking action in the present when they just start doing what they say they wish to do. This would be engaging and experiencing the activity that brings them joy - right here in the present moment. The rest is automatic. Something, somewhere begins to bring it all together.

http://heal-empower.com

27

Remember the fielder in the game of Cricket? He practiced something he enjoyed doing. Practiced. He trained, ran as a daily routine. Practiced. He watched and studied cricket matches. Talked to peers. Found a mentor. Learned. Focused on improving his own weak areas so that he could play his best. A bowler comes in, throws a ball at the batsman. There is some predictability about the direction in which the ball could move or be hit. However, at that moment, no amount of practice can guarantee what that moment is to unfold. The bowler and the fielder both have an Intention to get the batsman out. The batsman has an Intention not to get out! All have practiced at their craft. And yet, no one can plan or predict the "Outcome". The intense focus of the moment brings about a certain letting go that allows the Universal Forces to bring together an Outcome that cannot be planned. Along the way, the Goals can even change and it doesnt really matter.. as Life unfolds in magical ways. Since we have engaged with Life in the present with our whole-hearted Intention, we flow along with Life and its magnanimity far more easily.

Allowing Success to Manifest

page 28

page 29

Ya, Right!

Ya, right..! Grrrr.

Raahi: Listen, I dont really understand this. I feel upset, anxious, angry, confused, frustrated, jealous.. Are you saying that I am not supposed to feel all this? Come on, I am human. Anubhav: Of course, we are human. Why would we strive to be anything else in this fabulous human-machine? I cant imagine being a frog, an elephant, an ant or an apple tree having this chat with you on instant messenger! It is natural to feel an entire gamut of emotions. Isnt that part of being human? If you are upset, how can you be calm? Sure, you can pretend..! Raahi: I dont get it. You say, be and act in the present moment. I am feeling frustrated about a whole lot of things in this damned present moment.. my wife is angry with me for not spending enough time with her, my boss is a *&^%@, I have loans to repay, my book - my ticket to financial freedom and happiness isnt happening.. it is tough. It is very easy for you to sit there and preach. What action should I take in your present moment?

http://heal-empower.com

29

And now I am even beginning to feel angry.. Anubhav: You do understand that it is human and natural to feel emotions. Raahi: Yes. Anubhav: You do see that there is nothing wrong with that? Raahi: Of course, it is wrong. I shouldnt be getting angry with you. You are a well-wisher. I should be able to manage my life better. I dont even know if I deserve any better. This is getting too complicated. Anubhav: Well.. Raahi: You know, just the other day I screamed unreasonably at a colleague. It really wasnt his fault. And last month.. I had to make a presentation to a new client. I knew the stuff. But I just didnt have the confidence. Even without meeting him the man seemed like a ferocious Lion in my head, waiting to pounce at me. I feel really stupid to even say this. But the anxiety was so real. I decided to make an excuse and have someone else do it. I feel so worthless. Anubhav: Situations do make it difficult for us to adapt and engage in a healthy way. There are also many subconscious programs and unprocessed emotions running that limit us.. and these show up in daily life. There are several methods that work as an aide in dealing with feelings that keep us stressed. One can practice applying them. Personally, I am only grateful that Life gives us enough opportunities to surface such limiting beliefs. We can work
Allowing Success to Manifest page 30

page 31 through them. How will they surface unless we engage actively with Life - heart-on? Raahi: Let me get this. It is OK that I feel this way? Anubhav: Yes. Raahi: And there are ways in which I can learn to manage myself and life in a less stressful way? Anubhav: Yes.. Raahi: I can do this while going about my life? I dont have to go on a sabbatical to get all sorted out? Anubhav: You are in order. You can begin to practice bringing in more awareness and self-compassion.. learn to address sensations and feelings that cause you stress at the time it happens. You will then be more available to Life and find it easier to navigate through it. Raahi: Hmmm.. Anubhav: The more you bring yourself into the present, things begin to fall in place in your Body and in your Life. When the body-mind system experiences more relaxation and less stress, the system gets a chance to re-organize itself toward well-being. The bodys intelligence gets to do its job of Supporting Life. Raahi: Hmmm.. Anubhav: I am not able to engage in a consistent meditative practice even though I am aware it is extremely useful. This is what I do as a basic practice: I bring my
http://heal-empower.com 31

attention to my breath 4 or 5 times every 15 to 20 minutes no matter what I am doing. Raahi: Oh! That seems do-able!! Anubhav: Yes. You dont have to try to take deep long breaths or breathe in a different way. The activity of breathing is on even though you are unaware of it! You are only bringing your attention to it. I know I am breathing in. I know I am breathing out. Saying it to yourself cuts off the chatter for a couple of minutes. Raahi: Interesting! Seems simple. Anubhav: Yes, isnt it? You may also want to explore Practicing Healthy Thoughts. Raahi: Like affirmations? Repeat positively phrased statements? Anubhav: Well, my preference is to engage actively with a healthy thought or idea. Raahi: Could you give me an example? Anubhav: Sure! Take these ideas: Everyday, I pleasantly uncover my abilities.. I look with wonder my perfectly unfolding life.. Now is the perfect time for my amazing good.. All doors now fly open for wonderful surprises. Take one idea and engage with it through your day whenever you remember. Play with it. Be open to it around you for you, for others around you..
Allowing Success to Manifest page 32

page 33 Raahi: What if I have a difficulty with it? Anubhav: That is a great opportunity for you to surface and be aware of any resistance. You can work through it using any useful method that you are comfortable with. Raahi: Hmmm.. this sounds easy. Anubhav: Well, it is certainly simple. You will only know how it works out for you when you play with it. You may also want to consciously spend regular time around those who have a healthy vibration; observe and play with young kids - they are so completely in the present. Life is a journey. Life is a mystery.. Let us not press the pause button trying to figure it all out Let us spend more time experiencing and sharing our unique journeys. Raahi: Got it.. Hey, thank for this! Anubhav: Sure! Any time..
