Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Prayer before the Sacrament of Reconciliation

Receive my confession, O most loving and gracious Lord Jesus Christ, only hope for the salvation of my soul. Grant to me true contrition of soul, so that day and night I may by penance make satisfaction for my many sins. Savior of the world, O good Jesus, Who gave Yourself to the death of the Cross to save sinners, look upon me, most wretched of all sinners; have pity on me, and give me the light to know my sins, true sorrow for them, and a firm purpose of never committing them again. O gracious Virgin Mary, Immaculate Mother of Jesus, I implore you to obtain for me by your powerful intercession these graces from you Divine Son. St. Joseph, pray for me.

A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

By the late John J Cardinal Carberry

Keep them; I pray Thee, dearest Lord. The priests whose lives burn out before Thy consecrated shrine. Keep them, for they are in the world, Though from the world apart. When earthly pleasures tempt, allure -Shelter them in Thy heart. Keep them and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain, When all their life of sacrifice for souls seems but in vain. Keep them and remember, Lord, they have no one but Thee. Yet, they have only human hearts, With human frailty. Keep them as spotless as the Host, That daily they caress; Their every thought and word and deed, Deign, dearest Lord, to bless. Amen

Prayer for our new Ordinary: Bishop Daniel Conlon

All praise and glory are Yours, Lord Jesus: You have made us Your body, Your Church, and help us to bear fruit for our heavenly Father. You chose St. Peter as the rock, and sent him to feed Your flock and to strengthen his brothers and sisters. Continue to help Your Church Through the guidance of our Pope, Bishops, and Priests; and keep us faithful in Your service, at Christ the King Parish Grant our new Bishop Daniel Conlon, holiness of life and wisdom to direct and guide our diocesan family so that we may grow in your love. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, the High Priest. Amen.

Dear Friends in Christ, The Pastoral Staff, Deacons, and I hope you are enjoying your summer. It has been hard for so many without electricity, flooding, those without employment, parishioners battling with health issues, and the details that weigh heavy on our shoulders. How do we deal with all of those challenges? Has your faith been your strength? The staff is so blessed to listen, support and help, in anyway they can. Thank you for the ways you support the staff and deacons in the walk of God at Christ the King. We are in this together, right? What's happening at Christ the King? Congratulations to our parishioner Rich Spada for being appointed as State Deputy of Illinois of Knights of Columbus. I want to thank Bishop Siegel for celebrating our 5pm Mass. What an inspiring homily. Thank you to our parish knights and parishioners who welcomed our guests from all the Dioceses of Illinois. A number of guests told me they felt at home. As you know in caring for a home, there are a lot of expenses. Our home at Christ the King is being updated and cared for. The concrete walk in front and back of school/religion formation building is being done. We are now in compliance with the insurance company and the village put their stamp of approval on the work. Please give to the gold envelope, which helps to maintain our campus. Every dollar helps, every gift a blessing! The Administration Commission has pointed out to me large cracks in the lower parking lot. This needs to be repaired. Also, the lots will need to be seal coated. Thank you for all who give to the gold! As we celebrate this new week, let us keep in mind our second reading. St. Paul reminds us that we are not praying alone, but rather we go to God accompanied by the Holy Spirit who is always praying with us. Let us pray for our new Bishop Daniel who was installed on Thursday by Cardinal George at our Cathedral. Remember those priests who have been appointed to new parishes this year. I pray in thanksgiving as I begin my ninth year as your Pastor and 23 years a Priest. God Bless all of you! In Christ,

The Alpha Course

What is it? Alpha is a 10 week course that will ignite and inspire conversations about Jesus Christ. It is a practical introduction to the Christian faith. This is a place where guests have an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The course will meet for 10 weeks with a one day retreat in the middle. Each session, people enjoy food, laughter and learning about the teachings of Jesus in a fun and friendly environment where no question about Life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile. There is no charge to attend the Alpha Course. Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for anyone. People attend Alpha from all backgrounds, religions and viewpoints. They come to investigate questions about the existence of God, the purpose of Life, what happens after death, the teachings of Jesus and more. Many guests have never been to church; others may have attended Church occasionally but have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome. Where and When will it begin? Christ the King Parish is proud to announce that Alpha will begin on July 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Life Center. It will run for 10 weeks with a one day retreat. We will have hospitality, conversation, a 45 minute DVD and round table discussions with members from the parish. I have a relationship with Christ and would like to discover more about the Alpha course. Can I come? Sure and bring a friend! This engaging series will refresh and possibly rediscover many biblical facts for every Christian. You can register for the Alpha Course by calling Eileen Maggiore at 630-396-6076. eileen@ctklombard.org

n the celebration of Mass we raise our hearts and minds to God. We are creatures of body as well as spirit, so our prayer is not confined to our minds and hearts. It is expressed by our bodies as well. When our bodies are engaged in our prayer, we pray with our whole person. Using our entire being in prayer helps us to pray with greater attentiveness. During Mass we assume different postures standing, kneeling, sittingand we are also invited to make a variety of gestures. These postures and gestures are not merely ceremonial. They have profound meaning and, when done with understanding, can enhance our participation in the Mass.

SITTING
Sitting is the posture of listening and meditation, so the congregation sits for the pre-Gospel readings and the homily and may also sit for the period of meditation following Communion. All should strive to assume a seated posture during the Mass that is attentive rather than merely at rest.

PROCESSIONS
Every procession in the Liturgy is a sign of the pilgrim Church, the body of those who believe in Christ, on their way to the Heavenly Jerusalem. The Mass begins with the procession of the priest and ministers to the altar. The Book of the Gospels is carried in procession to the ambo. The gifts of bread and wine are brought forward to the altar. Members of the assembly come forward in procession eagerly, attentively, and devoutly to receive Holy Communion. We who believe in Christ are moving in time toward that moment when we will leave this world and enter into the joy of the Lord in the eternal Kingdom he has prepared for us.

STANDING
Standing is a sign of respect and honor, so we stand as the celebrant who represents Christ enters and leaves the assembly. From the earliest days of the Church, this posture has been understood as the stance of those who have risen with Christ and seek the things that are above. When we stand for prayer, we assume our full stature before God, not in pride but in humble gratitude for the marvelous things God has done in creating and redeeming each one of us. By Baptism we have been given a share in the life of God, and the posture of standing is an acknowledgment of this wonderful gift. We stand for the proclamation of the Gospel, which recounts the words and deeds of the Lord. The bishops of the United States have chosen standing as the posture to be observed for the reception of Communion.

MAKING THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

We begin and end Mass by marking ourselves with the Sign of the Cross. Because it was by his death on the Cross that Christ redeemed humankind, we trace the Sign of the Cross on our foreheads, lips, and hearts at the beginning of the Gospel, praying that the Word of God may be always in our minds, on our lips, and in our hearts. The cross reminds us in a physical way of the Paschal Mystery we celebrate: the death and Resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ.

KNEELING
In the early Church, kneeling signified penance. So thoroughly was kneeling identified with penance that the early Christians were forbidden to kneel on Sundays and during the Easter season, when the prevailing spirit of the Liturgy was one of joy and thanksgiving. In the Middle Ages kneeling came to signify homage, and more recently this posture has come to signify adoration, especially before the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. It is for this reason that the bishops of this country have chosen the posture of kneeling for the entire Eucharistic Prayer.

BOWING
Bowing signifies reverence, respect, and gratitude. In the Creed we bow at the words that commemorate the Incarnation. We also bow as a sign of reverence before we receive Communion. The priest and other ministers bow to the altar, a symbol of Christ, when entering or leaving the sanctuary. As a sign of respect and reverence even in our speech, we bow our heads at the name of Jesus, at the mention of the Three Per-
