PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS
----
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 60
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. In a test, an examinee either guesses or copies or knows the answer to a multiple

choice question with four choices. The probability that he makes a guess is 1/3 and
the probability that he copies the answer is 1/6. The probability that his answer
is correct given that he copied it is 1/8. Find the probability that he knew the
answer to the question given that he correctly answered it.

2. If f(X) = Ke−|x| is p.d.f in −∞ ≤ x ≤ ∞. Find the value of K, find the variance of

the random variable and also find probability between 0 and 4.

3. The marks of 1000 students in a University are found to be normally distributed

with mean 70 and S.D 5. Estimate the number of students whose marks will be

(a) Between 60 and 75

(b) More than 75
(c) Less than 68.

4. When we take a sample from an infinite population what happen to the standard
error of the mean if the sample size is

(a) Increase from 50 to 200.

(b) Decreased from 225 to 25.

5. (a) A random sample of size 100 is taken from a population with S.D=5.1. Given
that the sample mean is x= 21.6. Construct 95% confidence interval for the
population mean.
(b) What can we say with 99% confidence about the maximum error, if the stan-
dard deviation is 2.06 and the sample size is 40.
(c) A sample of 100 iron bars is said to be drawn from a large number of bars,
whose lengths are normally distributed with mean 4 ft and standard deviation
0.6. If the sample mean is 4.2 ft, can the sample be regarded as a truly random
sample.

6. (a) At a certain large university a sociologist speculates that male students spend
considerably more money on junk food than do female students. To test her
hypothesis, the sociologist randomly selects from the registrar’s records the
names of 200 students. Of these,125 are men and 75 are women. She then

finds that the sample mean of the average amount spent on junk food per week
by the men is Rs.100 and sample standard deviation is 400. For the women
the sample mean is Rs.450 and the sample standard deviation is Rs.150. Test
the sociologist’s claim at the 0.05 level of significance.
(b) A coin is tossed 10000 times and it turns up head 5195 times. Discuss whether
the coin may be regarded as unbiased one.

7. The table below shows results of a survey in which 250 respondents were categorized
according to the level of education towards students.

City Against Neutral For

Elementary school 40 25 5
High school 40 20 5
College 30 15 30
Professional College 15 15 10

Test at the 0.01 level whether the classifications are independent

8. The marks obtained by 10 students in Mathematics and Statistics are given below.
Find the Coefficient of Correlation between the two subjects and the two lines of
Regression.

Marks in Maths 75 30 60 80 53 35 15 40 38 48
