(2m) Question focus is on people so you should comprehend aspects about their lifestyle, dwellings, government system etc. You should support your answer with evidence. The Funan people were ruled by a king as Source A shows that the King lived in a storied pavilion. Some of the Funan people were traders as Source A shows that they traded in gold, silver and silk. b) What inferences can you draw from Source B about the Shang Civilisation? (4m) Source B shows a bronze axehead. I can infer that the Shang people were advanced as they had the knowledge to make bronze which was used to make objects. I can also infer that there were craftsmen who were skilful as they knew how to carve inscriptions on the bronze axehead. The inscriptions on the axehead suggest that the Shang people had a system of writing using pictographs. The existence of the axehead suggests that the Shang people might have faced attacks from enemies and thus used the objects as a weapon for defence. Hence I can infer that the Shang civilization was advanced. c) What does Source C tell you about life in the Indus Valley Civilisation? (4m) Source C shows a stone chessboard. I can infer that the Indus people must have leisure time to invent games to keep themselves occupied. From the gridlines on the chessboard, I can infer that the Indus Civilisation must have occupations like craftsmen who were skilful to utilize tools in order to carve.

I can also infer from the different playing pieces of the chessboard that the Indus people must have formulated rules pertaining to the game. Hence I can infer that the life of the Indus Civilisation must have been organized and peaceful as they have time for games. d) Study Sources B and C. In what ways are the sources similar? (5m) This question requires you to explain the similarities between Sources B and C and not about the features of civilization. Reading and understanding the question is key to a good answer! Sources B and C are similar in showing that there were craftsmen in the Indus and Shang Civilizations. This is supported in both sources where there must have been craftsmen who made the bronze axehead for the Shang and the stone chessboard for the Indus. Source B shows inscription in the bronze axehead. Source C shows the gridlines and different playing pieces of the chessboard. Hence both sources are similar in showing that the craftsmen were very skilful as they were able to carve objects out of bronze and stone. In addition, Sources B and C are similar in showing the advanced technology in both civilizations. This is supported where both the bronze axehead and stone chessboard would require technical knowledge of making bronze and cutting stone. Often they were ruled by kings as seen in the case of the Shang and SEAsian kingdoms. The well-planned cities of the Indus further attest to the existence of government and leaders. These early civilizations had different occupations. These included craftsmen, traders and farmers. These different occupations meant that the early civilizations were able to specialize in their area of expertise and contributed to the different needs of society.
