EMPLOYMENT
Information on how to apply for employment authorization for spouses in J-2 status are available at the International Centers website listed below. J-2 employment authorization is for any type of work, full- or part-time, onor off-campus. A job offer is not necessary. F-2 and H-4 dependents CANNOT obtain permission to work under any circumstances. Family Matters
COOKING IN AMERICA CLASSES
The Friends of the International Center offer cooking classes for international spouses on Thursday mornings during the academic year. More information is available at the Wednesday Coffee Hour.

AMERICAN-ENGLISH-IN-ACTION (AEIA) TUTOR PROGRAM


International spouses as well as scholars and students are eligible to apply for a tutor if they need help with English conversation. Applicants must speak and understand enough English to communicate with a tutor. All of the tutors are volunteers. There is an annual $50 registration fee for scholars and spouses; for registered UCSD students this service is free. WEDNESDAY COFFEE HOUR


Every Wednesday from 10:00am to 12:00 noon, volunteers from the Friends of the International Center and the community coordinate an informal gathering of international spouses. Small children are welcome. The Coffee Hour usually attracts over 50 spouses and many children. A child-free group also meets and plans many activities during the year. Newly arrived spouses are encouraged to come to the International Center any Wednesday its a wonderful way to make new friends and to share information.

FRIENDS LIBRARY
The Friends of the International Center maintains the Friends Library where books may be checked out. Included are books on learning English, on culture, travel and history of the U.S. and other countries and cookbooks.

OCEANIDS NEWCOMERS GROUP


http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/oceanids Oceanids, UCSDs support organization, has a special Newcomers Committee that organizes monthly events for new faculty members and researchers at the university. Their activities include a garden wine party in the fall, a December holiday party, whalewatching, picnics and potluck suppers. New international spouses may also want to participate in many of their other interest groups. The Oceanids Pavilion is located at the International Center.

CHILD CARE AND SCHOOLS


UCSD DAYCARE CENTER
The UCSD Early Childhood Education Center, located at 9224 Regents Road in the Mesa Married and Graduate Student Housing Complex, accepts children from ages eleven months to six and one-half years old. Whole-day care is provided and the cost for care is based on the childs age. There is usually a long waiting list for this program; waiting list applications are available on request by calling (858) 534-2768. KITCHEN AND BABY FURNITURE EXCHANGE


Oceanids offer kitchen equipment and baby furniture for a small rental fee to international scholars and their families. They provide this service to those who will be at UCSD for less than one year. Located at the International Center, the Exchange is open Wednesdays from 10:30am to 12:00 noon.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATIVE NURSERY SCHOOL AT UCSD INTERNATIONAL CENTER


The International Cooperative Nursery School at the UCSD campus provides pre-school education for children aged 2-5 years. Applications are welcome from parents who are UCSD students, staff, faculty and members of the community not associated with the university. Programs for children aged 3 1 / 2 years to 5 years are Monday/ Wednesday/Friday mornings/afternoons or Monday-Friday morning/afternoons. The program for children aged from 2 years is on Tuesday/Thursday mornings. All programs run from September-June with traditional US holidays and there is also a summer program from mid-June through midAugust. If you would like more information the contact details are below. ENROLLMENT AND IMMUNIZATIONS
For school registration, go to the front office of the elementary or secondary school serving the area of San Diego in which the family lives and take the students birth certificate and documented proof of immunizations from a physician which must show day, month and year of each immunization. A student must have received at least one of each type of required immunization before enrolling in the school. If the parent has no record showing the child has been immunized, the child must begin a new series of immunizations before he or she can attend school. PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS
Children enrolled for first grade will need to have a physical examination, including TB test, as part of the Child Health and Disability Program. The school nurses at school sites have the forms parents need. The exam may be obtained from the childs private physician or arrangements can be made with the school nurse. The physical examination may be done up to 18 months before to 90 days after entry into first grade.
