A career action plan is comprehensive in that it details past, present, and future experiences and goals. They provide a written way for you to identify and consider where you are going and how to get there in terms of life roles and training needs. 2. A career action plan is developmental so it can be used during the employment period with a company and even beyond. Since individuals are always in a state of transition, the plan includes elements that are responsive to the demands of any change in the employment life. They re not forms individuals fill out once and follow forever, but rather plans that are modified as new experiences are acquired or changing employment requirements are identified. 3. Career action plans are competency reference or based. They include essential information about abilities, interests, values, experiences, and achievements, and the information is linked with competencies, skills, knowledge, and attitudes required in work or to obtain new training.

Career Action Plan Elements The central elements of individualized Career Action Plans typically include: 1. Worker roles including related competencies, interests, and abilities. 2. Learner roles including a record of educational experiences and achievements. 3. Individual roles including information about personal values and health. 4. Family member roles including responsibilities. Such plans include action steps that enable you to analyze, synthesize, and apply the information acquired. It is important to design the plan in a manner that enables you to think in new ways about the information you have recorded. Possible barriers to the attainment of goals should be identified. Friendship and support groups should be noted, and role models should be identified. This process of planning, reviewing, revising, and applying is ongoing and cyclical. Developing a Career Action Plan The final phase of this career development program is designed to give you an opportunity to apply the concepts and skills that you have learned through the formation of your own personal career action plan. My Career Action Plan Defining my concerns I have carefully reviewed my situation, and the career area I would like to see improved related to... I am concerned about this situation because... I would use these indicators to consider my concerns to be satisfactorily resolved... The forces that I see as unfavorable to (blocking) the hoped-for change are... The solutions that I see to my concerns are... The major facts that relate to my concern are... I see the time frame for my career action plan to be operative as follows... REFLECTION PAPER ON PERSONAL VALUES Reflection on My Personal Values As I considered my personal values and the values taken into consideration in the simulations, I concluded that my personal value system had not changed but had expanded. Before performing the simulations, my personal value system consisted of values such as integrity, respect, trust, loyalty, and quality relationships. The new values that I have added to my value system are time and confidentiality. In the following sections, I will discuss my values on time, confidentiality, and loyalty an existing value.

Valuing Time Time has become one of my values because everything that I do and every decision that I make depends upon how I allocate my time to perform and complete my tasks. I also consider time to be an important value because I must consider it when I create and plan schedules to show when project assignments are to be completed. And, time plays an important role on my job when I have to set up conference calls with out-of-state PERSONAL VALUE DEVELOPMENT Every choice you have ever made and every decision that you have regretted comes back to a set of several core beliefs that many people refer to as their personal values. Your values weren't developed overnight and although outside influence plays a major role much of your values were determined by your own internal perception. Over your lifetime you have seen, heard, felt, and experienced certain situations and conditions that have helped shape your beliefs to what they are today. Your values are the foundation to your entire being and are subconsciously a part of your everyday life in one way or another. Generally most people do not purposely choose their values, most of them are learned subconsciously as children before the age of 10. Studies have shown that a child's social surroundings are the heaviest source of influence when it comes to developing personal values. Children tend to learn most of their behavior from their parents and older siblings, but as they get older they may be influenced by their teachers, coaches, friends, and even favorite actors or sports stars. All of these social interactions can have both a negative or positive influence over the development of our personal values. Another key influence in personal values comes from our life experience, as we go through life we are able to take all of our positive and negative experiences and add them or discard them from our current belief system. Not only do your values influence your choices but as you grow older your choices will influence your values. Research has also shown that our values can change by the people we surround ourselves with through the process of association. For example during an independent study a German psychologist found out that he could eliminate a person's fear of flying by simply having the patients sit down and talk with a professional pilot for 1 hour per week for several months. By placing attention to your values you are able to become more self aware, make ethical decisions, and prioritize the things that really matter to you. When you are more self aware you will know exactly what you're projecting to people when you interact with them, you will know exactly what you have done right and what you have done wrong in all aspects of your life. Understanding your own code of ethics and prioritizing your life will allow you live to your fullest potential, when you are able to proudly look yourself in the mirror you will have achieved what many like to call the height of empowerment. Sometimes people may feel the need to change their current set of values, although this isn't an overnight process it can be done with hard work and dedication. Since your personal values are a reflection of your life experiences the key to changing them is to change your life so that you have new experiences. By sitting down and consciously choosing which old values need to be removed, which values need to be retained, and which values need to be added you will be able to subconsciously command your brain to reprogram itself for change VALUE FORMATION AND EDUCATION Accomplishment by an individual in any field of activity depends on the level of skill which the person has acquired. Skill converts physical energy into useful productive force for achievement. Before the advent of public education and vocational training, individual skills were limited to what could be acquired from the family, by long apprenticeship and through personal experience. Opportunities for the individual were similarly restricted by the limited access to skills through these means. The formalization of curricula enabled society to impart much higher levels of skill to many more people (e.g. mechanics, engineering, medicine, etc.) thereby geometrically increasing the opportunities for individual accomplishment and the general social progress. Accomplishment in any field also depends on the attitudes, understanding, decisiveness and values with which the individual acts. The simple act of writing depends not only on the physical skill for forming letters and words, but also the attitude of the writer toward the act of writing, the subject matter and the readership. It depends on the writer's understanding of the subject and decision to communicate. In addition it depends on the values with which the writer performs the act of writing. Physical values such as cleanliness and orderliness determine the neatness of the writing and sequence of thoughts. Social values determine how tactfully the writer communicates his message. Psychological values such as patience, honesty and humility determine how both the author and the message are received and interpreted. Without the necessary attitude, understanding, decisiveness and values, the act of writing has minimal effect. Every act in every field has its own requirements for accomplishment. All these elements are needed in order for the act to lead to accomplishment and fulfillment. Carrying on a discussion requires not only the ability to speak, but also the ability to listen, a cooperative and open-minded attitude, the self-discipline not to interrupt or change the subject, the capacity to understand what is spoken and quickly decide what should or should not be said, as well as the tolerance, honesty, humility and patience needed to gain the confidence and sympathy of the listener. Without these other elements, speaking one's thoughts has minimal effect and can often be counterproductive.

The more complex, sophisticated and significant the act, the greater is the importance of these elements in determining its outcome. The act of selling, winning an election, managing an organization, negotiating an agreement, or leading a group depend more for their success on the person's values, attitudes and decisiveness than on the skills which the individual possesses. Every successful person exhibits these qualities. Every failure lacks them in some measure. Formal education and training programs focus almost exclusively on imparting physical, social and mental skills. They place very little conscious emphasis on the attitudes, the mental understanding and decisiveness, and the psychological values needed for these skills to result in accomplishment and fulfillment. Therefore, the overall effectiveness and accomplishments of the individual and the society are extremely limited compared to the opportunities that are available. If the requirements for success in each field of life are analyzed, most people would be found possessing only 25% of what is required for high achievement. Thus, the scope for improving personal effectiveness is enormous. Values represent the highest and most powerful individual capacity for accomplishment. As skills direct the use of physical energy, values direct the use of the psychological energy of the personality. Therefore the highest levels of individual and social accomplishment demand very high values. It is possible to evolve a formal curricula that does impart the values, attitudes, understanding and decisiveness necessary for achievement and personal fulfillment. In order to do so, it is necessary to fully understand the process of value formation and the ways in which values are acquired.
