AN AFRICAN URBAN LEGEND

The year is 1890. The place; the office of Johannes Rissik, Surveyor General of the Zuid-Afrikaanse Republiek, De Oude Raadzaal, Church Square Pretoria. Sytze Wierda, close friend of Rissik and architect to the President Paul Kruger. Wierda and Rissik are pouring over the general plan of the tract of lush farm land, less than 10 miles from the dusty street of the new gold mining town of Johannesburg. This piece of prime real estate had been granted to Wierda by Kruger for his work in constructing the very building they were standing in and influencing architectural design in the capital. Wierda had long admired this valley so much so that Rissik had named it after him - Wierda Vallei. Rissik had told Wierda that there was a small stream on the property called the Skilpad Loop or Tortise Stream. Eventually they found it on the plan but topographically was inconclusive. All that was found was a note from the surveyor that said it had a steady flow and a proliferation of tortises in the general immediacy of the stream. Sytze Wierda proceeded to build the stylish farmhouse, very close to Skilpad Loop, but before he and family could move war reared its ugly head. Wierda sent his family back to Holland and he stayed on to take up arms with the Boers. By 1903 the war was over and Wierda was allowed to return to Weirda Vallei but his Skilpad Loop had been renamed Turtle Creek. This little bit of remarkable local history emerged as Wierda House was demolished in 1994 for the office park directly behind Linger Longer and Turtle Creek, which had been built a year earlier. All that remains of the original homestead is a buttress and some of the fine English oaks and Birches planted by Wierda in 1912. Despite the fact that Wierdas Turtle Creek has long dried up, its namesake remains an interesting and charming oasis in the middle of the burgeoning Sandton business district, a place to take a moment over a glass of great South African wine and contemplate our history, our people, our future, our Africa - our home! The year 2006 signified the beginning of a new chapter in the Turtle Creek history. The business was bought by the long standing management team of Carlos de Freitas and Walter Ulz.
