Fisherman Choose Side

Help Pirates Pummel Shooters
By Andrew Nelson and Hunter Congress

Mataguay Scout Ranch

Vol. IV Issue 4 July 28, 2011 Family Friday Edition

The bang of the rifles and whip of arrows mark the tell-tale start of the shooting sports Rugged O. The shooting sports Rugged O was very relaxed while campers shot balloons with arrows and glow sticks with bullets. Archers lined up with their bows and arrows to shoots balloons at targets and increase their accuracy. The scouts picked up their choice of balloon and tried popping others when told to fire. Scouts were laughing and enjoying their music, while staff were thinking about what was going to happen later that night. The archery and shooting groups merged as the archers brought over their water balloons, in preparation for the fight. James Walker played Ride of the Valkyries as the scouts marched not to Ragnarok but rather to their fates. Shooting sports thought they would have the advantage against the Pirates but the Fisherman sided with the Pirates. They slowly snuck up in boats and stole the shooting sports water balloons. In the starry night, the war becomes chaos as the scouts didnt know which side was which. Eventually the skirmish ended and the scouts talked about what they could have changed and how the outcome could have ended differently.

A scoutmaster made the closest thing to a flying squirrel aquatics director Adam Pringle has seen all week.

Big Splash

By Andrew Nelson, Hunter Congress Troop, Justin Lemler Big Splash was held at the Parker pool at 3:00 on Wednesday. The purpose of the event was for the scoutmaster to have the highest score they could get out of 30 of the three available categories. The categories were most creative, most painful and biggest splash. There were three judges: Bananaman, Spider-man and Chick-atobi who Representing the staff was a chicken wearing a Hawaiin shirt, a grass skirt, and carrying a coconut drink. First, the scoutmasters lined up and were called to jump in by the Aquatics director, Adam Pringle. The scoutmasters jumped in individually to rack up the most points in the first category of most cre-

ative. Robert Babbe, a scoutmaster who participated in the event said, "the funniest jump was the scoutmaster with the whole uniform that fell in." The chicken was staff which was the reason it always got straight 10's from all judges. The most painful category was where the scoutmasters did what they thought would make the most excruciating sound. In this category mostly belly flops were attempted. One of the scoutmasters did a belly flop on top of a chair. This time the chicken made a face at the pool staff and they beat the chicken up. Robert Babbe stated that the pain jumps were their favorite. The crowds favorite was big splash. The scoutmasters ran in the direction of the judges, trying to get maximum soakage. Spiderman broke his streak of American Idol judge and gave his first maximum score, a 10, of the day.

The Weekly Brief

Game Day
By Diego Fierro, Hunter Congress On Game Day everyone's tension was building up for the afternoon games. Even breakfast, everyone felt the competition rising just walking through the dining hall. These fierce rivalries soon broke out as soon as the triathlon started. Then this led on to the games, these games were swim relay, tug-a-war, poker shooting, caterpillar races, and the bucket brigade.

Waterdogs

Avation

By Steve Shoemaker & Casey Brown On Wednesday a group of campers went out to Warner Springs for aviation Although aviation is flying, we were going to go up in gliders. We went to a nearby office to receive a number on a slip of paper, our place in line.We had two options for the ride's movement: rollercoaster, and going straight. I, Steve, chose rollercoaster. We went straight up (battling 2g's), then went down and, for a couple seconds, literally floated above our seats. Sometimes we would turn 90 degrees but never upside-down. I, Casey, went for the straight, calm ride. Being able to see the sights and scenery was fun. It was scary being released from the towplane, and the rough landing. It felt good to finally get off. It was awesome to finally drive back to Mataguay.

By Andrew Nelson and Hunter Congress Over 20 scouts rolling around and jumping in the water at 6:30 is the definition of waterdogs. Here at the Camp Mataguay waterdogs, every person has barks of excitement as they shiver in wait for the session to start after a cold shower. The session starts with jumping in the heated pool and swimming toward the instructor. Later, the instructor commands the dogs to roll on the ground and to fetch kickboards and finally end their swim by making a whirlpool and swimming around the pool. Aquatics director Adam Pringle thought it was particularly funny that he could treat them like dogs and yell commands. Pringle said he has worked with waterdogs for seven years but the camp has been doing it for decades. "It beats the hell outta (sic) running!" Pringle exclaimed.

Barbeque

By Ammon Pond Everyone danced, the grill sizzled and flared, and the mass ate watermelon at the Wednesday barbeque at the Silva lodge. People were dancing and singing. When the staff got into the dancing, it got more crazy.

The staff getting appropriately dancy during the barbeque.
