FIRST QUARTER, WEEK THIRTEEN

God showed His ultimate power over all things when He raised Christ from the dead.
The grave is defeated. Satan and the grip of sin lose. God wins. Christ is alive!
The penalty is paid. Our relationship with God the Father is now possible.
Nothing, not even death, can overcome the power and greatness of God.

Dear Sunday School Teacher,

Your ministry as a teacher for our Lord has eternal value! When we view our ministry in light of
eternity, we see its importance and the privilege that God has entrusted to us. In Psalm 78, the
Bible also reminds us of this great calling: One generation commending the Gospel to the next.
Treasuring Christ Curriculum: The ministry resource that you hold in your hand is produced
and shaped by the local churchThe Bride of Christ. We have three primary strategies that
guide us. First, we desire to produce a Gospel-centered curriculum that allows every child, babies to
high school students, to study the same Scripture passage each week. Second, we seek to equip
parents to thrive in their God-given role as their childs primary discipler. We want this resource,
therefore, to connect the church and the home by providing the Connecting Church and Home
resource within the curriculum. Third, we want to respond to the
desperate need for curriculum resources around the world. We
desire to bless the nations with a tool that will help them reach
the world with the Gospel of Christ.
Quarter One: God on Display
Every relationship begins with an introduction. God introducing Himself to us is the heartbeat of
this study.
God on Display is a major theme that runs throughout all of Scripture. Gods desire to have communion with those He created is seen from cover to cover of the Bible. In the first few pages, we see
God communing in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. The theme of communion continues
to be seen through the role of the Old Testament tabernacle and temple. In the New Testament,
God became incarnate in Jesus, God with us. After Jesus, the Father gives the Holy Spirit to believers
and institutes the Church. Fellowship in the Church breeds community, both with God and others
made in His likeness. As believers, we are guaranteed that we will spend eternity in communion
with God, dwelling in His presence.
God is on display: everywhere; in the past, present and future; and in our lives as believers. Let us
live continually to display Gods greatness and love.

Enter the Story
Southern Gospel music has been around
for decades. Some of the first concerts I ever
attended featured Southern Gospel music.
I remember sitting in the front section of a
church sanctuary with my Dad when I was
young, anxiously awaiting the Kingsmen to
take the stage; it was a great night.
One of the most memorable and remade
Southern Gospel hits is The Champion of
Love. Phil Cross wrote this song and a group
called the Cathedrals made it popular, but
even after many years, this song still is one of
the best known of all Southern Gospel recordings. Here are the lyrics from the second verse
and chorus:
He [Jesus] left His hometown
To enter this arena
To raise His hands in victory for me
An angry crowd crucified
This King who wore their crown
And they gladly watched the
Champion going down
But I will never count Him out
For Im a witness of
The day He rose to retain the title
Champion of love
He is higher than the highest
Greater than the great
No one will ever take His crown away
Hes more mighty than the mightiest
He reigns from above
Hes the all-time, undisputed,
undefeated, Champion of love

Story Outline
Here is a working definition of resurrection:
A new life after life after death in the popular
sense, a fresh living embodiment following
a period of death-as-a-state (N. T. Wright, The
Resurrection of the Son of God, pg. 31). There is
LIFE, what we know now. Our physical life of
eating, drinking, sleeping, playing basketball,
singing, playing with our kids, watching NCAA
hoops, working, paying bills, etc. Then, there is
LIFE AFTER DEATH. This is the what happens
when we die part.
In the first century, most people believed that
something happened to you after you died.
This view wasnt necessarily a biblical view,
but most believed in an afterlife. However,
what Christians should believe and what the
Bible teaches is that there is LIFE after life after
death. In other words, Jesus Christ is just not

Luke 24:1-12

somewhere in a spiritual state. No, He is alive;

He is LIFE. Jesus appeared in bodily form to
the disciples, to women who had been His
followers, to other people and even to large
crowds after His resurrection. And because He
is LIFE after life after death, He offers eternal,
abundant life after death to us.
Jesus resurrection from the dead (the fact that
He came back to life after being crucified) was
prophesied, predicted and seen firsthand by
other people. Many scriptural accounts tell
of the resurrection of Jesus, but our Treasure
Story will concentrate on one passage from
Luke 24.
In the last two verses of Luke 23, we read that
a few women who had been followers of Jesus
watch as His body is buried in a tomb. They
then go prepare spices for a proper burial
for Him because they did not think His body
had been adequately prepared for burial.
These spices were aromatic and would help in
covering the smell of Jesus decaying body.
Luke 23:55-56: The women who had come
with Him from Galilee followed and saw the
tomb and how His body was laid. Then they
returned and prepared spices and ointments.
On the Sabbath they rested according to the
commandment.
Early on the morning of the Sabbath, day
three after Jesus death according to the timeline found in Scripture (Luke 23:54, Luke 24:1,
John 19:31), the women who had prepared the
spices returned to the tomb to lavish the
spices on His body. These women would
most likely have still been in mourning. They
had just witnessed the cruel death of the

FOR YOUR EDIFICATION

Savior they all loved. They had seen Him die

and then be buried. Mourning for Jesus would
still be dictating their thoughts and actions.
Lauren Winner, a Christian Jew, says that
Judaism understands mourning as a discipline, one in which the mourner is not only
allowed, but expected, to be engaged (Mudhouse Sabbath, pg. 28). But the women came
upon an unexpected scene when they arrived that would quickly change their state of
mourning to one of wonder and joy.
Luke 23:54: It was the day of Preparation, and
the Sabbath was beginning.
The women encountered three astonishing
finds when they arrived at the place where
Jesus was buried. First, the stone was rolled
away from the entrance to the tomb. This tomb
was probably cut out of stone, like a cave of
sorts, and a large disk of stone was placed in
front of it.
Luke 24:1-2: But on the first day of the week,
at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking
the spices they had prepared. And they found
the stone rolled away from the tomb.
Next, they were astonished to find the body
of Jesus not there. Just two days earlier, the
women had witnessed His body being laid
in that very tomb. Where had He gone? Dead
men dont walk. Had someone taken their
Jesus? Had robbers stolen Him? Bewilderment and confusion must have visibly been
seen on their faces. Do you wonder if the
spices fell to the ground when they realized
He had vanished?

FIRST QUARTER, WEEK THIRTEEN | GOD ON DISPLAY

Victory Over Death

Luke 24:1-12

Luke 24:3: But when they went in they did not

find the body of the Lord Jesus.
The third astonishing part of that pre-dawn
morning was the appearance of two men who
appeared in dazzling apparel, heavenly beings (or angels according to John 20:12). They
spoke to the bewildered group of mourning
women, but their question probably puzzled
them even more: Why do you seek the living
among the dead? (Luke 24:5) To them, Jesus
was dead. The men from heaven reminded the
women of how Jesus prophesied about His
own resurrection. Three times in Lukes Gospel
Jesus tells about His coming death (Luke 9:22,
9:44, 18:32-33). The men were reminding them
of the truth of Jesus prophesy, the must of the
fulfilling of this miracle.
Luke 24:4-7: While they were perplexed
about this, behold, two men stood by them
in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the
men said to them, Why do you seek the living
among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.
Remember how He told you, while He was still
in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise. After the men
spoke these words, the womens response,
which had first been one of reverence and fear,
now turned to exclamation. They returned
to the eleven disciples and others who were
gathered with them and proclaimed what
the men in dazzling apparel had shared with
themJesus is now risen! Now women were
not viewed as the most reliable source for important information in those days nor were
they respected among men. The disciples at
first did not believe them. But rightly so, who
would have believed such a story?

FOR YOUR EDIFICATION

Luke 24:8-11: And they remembered His

words, and returning from the tomb they told
all these things to the eleven and to all the
rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna
and Mary the mother of James and the other
women with them who told these things to the
apostles, but these words seemed to them an
idle tale, and they did not believe them.
But Peter, who had just denied Jesus in front
of town people before the crucifixion, was
the first to run to the tomb and verify the
womens tale for himself. Its astonishing that
God chose Peter to be the first to confirm
the validity of their story. Peter had so many
amazing moments with Jesus during His
earthly ministry, and yet had denied Him at
the end. But God had not forgotten about
Peter. He let Peter see the empty tomb for
himself, renewing his faith, letting him marvel
at what God had done for him and all people in
the resurrection of His Son.
Luke 24:12: But Peter rose and ran to the
tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the
linen cloths by themselves; and he went home
marveling at what had happened.
Other passages found in the Gospels describe
how Jesus appeared to the disciples, other
people and to multitudes. Luke 24:13-15 tells
of a walk He took with two men on the way to
Emmaus. Luke 12:36-37 depicts His appearing
to the disciples. John 21:9-14 even describes
how the resurrected Christ ate breakfast with
the disciples.

Victory Over Death

Luke 24:1-12

The importance of the resurrection is that

Jesus conquered sin. Perfect justice and perfect
grace were met in His death and resurrection:
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift
of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
(Romans 6:23). God offered the right penalty
that was due when Jesus died for the sins that
we committed. When the resurrection took
place, death was defeated.
This glorious news should give us freedom
to live for Him and produce gratitude in us
that makes us want to please our Savior who
died and now lives. In Pauls first letter to the
church at Corinth, he writes of the truth and
hope of the resurrection and gives this charge
to the believers: Therefore [because of the
resurrection], my beloved brothers [those who

believe in the Gospel of Jesus], be steadfast,

immovable, always abounding in the work of
the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is
not in vain (15:58).

What was it that within a few

days transformed a band of mourners into the
spiritual conquerors of the world? It was not
the memory of Jesus life; it was not the inspi-

ration which came from past contact with Him.

But it was the message, He is risen. That mes-

sage alone gave to the disciples a living Savior;

and it alone can give to us a living Savior to-

day. J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and

Liberalism, pg. 42

Gospel Truths About God

God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins (John 3:16). Paul says that Jesus was put to death
for our trespasses and raised for our justification (Romans 4:25). When Christ was raised from the
death, it was Gods declaration of approval of Christs work of redemption (Wayne Grudem, Bible
Doctrine, pg. 264).

If He really and truly paid sins penalty fully, since sins penalty

is death, then the only way this could be shown is as He is raised alive again from the dead. The
resurrection of Christ, then, is necessary to prove and show that His payment for sin was full and

final. He finished paying sins penalty! He rose from the dead! Bruce Ware, Big Truths for Young
Hearts, pgs. 137-138

Gospel Truths About Man

The reason that Christ had to come to earth, live a perfect life, die on a cross a sinners death,
and raise victoriously over the grave is because a price had to be paid. Man is sinful. Man sinned
against a holy God so then the penalty of death had to be enforced. Man could not have paid that
penalty for himself.

Sin is directly opposite to all that is good in Gods character, and

just as God necessarily and eternally delights in Himself and in all that He is, so God necessarily
and eternally hates sin. Wayne Grudem, Bible Doctrine, pg. 211

Gospel Truths About Redemption

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:17-23 that if a Christians hope in Christ is only in this life, then we are to
be pitied. Christ not only offers Christians life abundantly here on earth, but also for eternity. We are
to be thankful to a gracious God for giving us the hope of the resurrection of Christ. The hope of an
eternity with God, for LIFE after life after death, is ours because of the truth of the resurrection. Our
penalty has been paid; we have been made right with a Holy God. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift (2 Corinthians 9:15)! Life is all about grace.

Jesus showed us, by His resurrection, a new kind of human life,

a life in which His body was made perfect, no longer subject to weakness, or death, but able to live
eternally. Wayne Grudem, Bible Doctrine, pg. 262

Christ tells His disciples that because He lives, they shall live
also. He is sufficient for them as a fountain of life to them. Jonathan Edwards, from his

Luke 24:1-12

Mark 16:1-8: When the Sabbath was past,

Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of
James and Salome bought spices, so that they
might go and anoint Him. And very early on the
first day of the week, when the sun had risen,
they went to the tomb. And they were saying
to one another, Who will roll away the stone
for us from the entrance of the tomb? And
looking up, they saw that the stone had been
rolled backit was very large. And entering
the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the
right side, dressed in a white robe, and they
were alarmed. And he said to them, Do not
be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who
was crucified. He has risen; He is not here. See
the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His
disciples and Peter that He is going before
you to Galilee. There you will see Him, just as
He told you. And they went out and fled from
the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had
seized them, and they said nothing to anyone,
for they were afraid.
Luke 9:22: The Son of Man must suffer many
things and be rejected by the elders and chief
priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the
third day be raised.
Luke 9:44: Let these words sink into your ears:
The Son of Man is about to be delivered into
the hands of men.
Luke 18:32-33: For He will be delivered over
to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. And after flogging
Him, they will kill Him, and on the third day He
will rise.

Luke 24:13-15: That very day two of them

were going to a village named Emmaus, about
seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were
talking with each other about all these things
that had happened. While they were talking
and discussing together, Jesus Himself drew
near and went with them.
Luke 24:36-37: As they were talking about
these things, Jesus Himself stood among them,
and said to them, Peace to you! But they were
startled and frightened and thought they saw
a spirit.
John 19:12: From then on Pilate sought to
release Him, but the Jews cried out, If you
release this man, you are not Caesars friend.
Everyone who makes himself a king opposes
Caesar.
John 21:9-14: When they got out on land, they
saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on
it, and bread. Jesus said to them, Bring some of
the fish that you have just caught. So Simon
Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore,
full of large fish, 153 of them. And although
there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus
said to them, Come and have breakfast. Now
none of the disciples dared ask Him, Who are
you? They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came
and took the bread and gave it to them, and so
with the fish. This was now the third time that
Jesus was revealed to the disciples after He was
raised from the dead.
Acts 2:24, 32: God raised Him up, loosing the
pangs of death, because it was not possible for
Him to be held by it. This Jesus God raised up,

Luke 24:1-12

Acts 4:10-12: Let it be known to all of you and

to all the people of Israel that by the name of
Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified,
whom God raised from the deadby Him
this man is standing before you well. This
Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the
builders, which has become the cornerstone.
And there is salvation in no one else, for there
is no other name under heaven given among
men by which we must be saved.
Acts 10:40-41: But God raised Him on the
third day and made Him to appear, not to all
the people but to us who had been chosen by
God as witnesses, who ate and drank with Him
after He rose from the dead.
Romans 6:4: We were buried therefore with
Him by baptism into death, in order that, just
as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory
of the Father, we too might walk in newness
of life.
1 Corinthians 6:14: And God raised the Lord
and will also raise us up by His power.
1 Corinthians 15: Now I would remind you,
brothers, of the Gospel I preached to you, which
you received, in which you stand, and by which
you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word
I preached to youunless you believed in vain.
For I delivered to you as of first importance
what I also received: that Christ died for our
sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that
He was buried, that He was raised on the third
day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that

FOR YOUR EDIFICATION

He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

Then He appeared to more than five hundred
brothers at one time, most of whom are still
alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then He
appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last
of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared
also to me. For I am the least of the apostles,
unworthy to be called an apostle, because I
persecuted the church of God. But by the grace
of God I am what I am, and His grace toward
me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked
harder than any of them, though it was not
I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so
you believed.
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the
dead, how can some of you say that there is
no resurrection of the dead? But if there is
no resurrection of the dead, then not even
Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not
been raised, then our preaching is in vain and
your faith is in vain. We are even found to be
misrepresenting God, because we testified
about God that He raised Christ, whom He
did not raise if it is true that the dead are not
raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even
Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not
been raised, your faith is futile and you are still
in your sins. Then those also who have fallen
asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we
have hope in this life only, we are of all people
most to be pitied.
But in fact Christ has been raised from the
dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen
asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man

Victory Over Death

Luke 24:1-12

has come also the resurrection of the dead. For

as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be
made alive. But each in his own order: Christ
the firstfruits, then at His coming those who
belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when
He delivers the kingdom to God the Father
after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For He must reign until He has
put all His enemies under His feet. The last
enemy to be destroyed is death. For God has
put all things in subjection under His feet. But
when it says, all things are put in subjection, it
is plain that He is excepted who put all things
in subjection under Him. When all things are
subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will
also be subjected to Him who put all things
in subjection under Him, that God may be
all in all.
Otherwise, what do people mean by being
baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead
are not raised at all, why are people baptized
on their behalf? Why are we in danger every
hour? I protest, brothers, by my pride in you,
which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die
every day! What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the
dead are not raised, Let us eat and drink, for
tomorrow we die. Do not be deceived: Bad
company ruins good morals. Wake up from
your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not
go on sinning. For some have no knowledge
of God. I say this to your shame. But someone
will ask, How are the dead raised? With what
kind of body do they come? You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body
that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of

FOR YOUR EDIFICATION

wheat or of some other grain. But God gives it

a body as He has chosen, and to each kind of
seed its own body. For not all flesh is the same,
but there is one kind for humans, another for
animals, another for birds, and another for fish.
There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies,
but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and
the glory of the earthly is of another. There is
one glory of the sun, and another glory of the
moon, and another glory of the stars; for star
differs from star in glory.
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What
is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory.
It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is
sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.
If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual
body. Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam became a
life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is
first but the natural, and then the spiritual. The
first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the
second man is from heaven. As was the man of
dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and
as is the man of heaven, so also are those who
are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image
of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image
of the man of heaven.
I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the
perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold!
I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but
we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the
trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised
imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this

Victory Over Death

Luke 24:1-12

God showed His ultimate power over all things when

He raised Christ from the dead. The grave is defeated.
Satan and the grip of sin lose. God wins. Christ is alive! The
penalty is paid. Our relationship with God the Father is
now possible. Nothing, not even death, can overcome the
power and greatness of God.

My Mission As Teacher:
Think about the funerals you have attended in your life. If the funeral was for a believer who
had died, what was the difference in the tone at the funeral? Was there joy amidst the crying?
Was there a celebration of life and a reason to celebrate because the person was now in heaven
worshiping Jesus?
How should this truth of the resurrection change our behavior and conversations with our lost
friendsnot only at Easter but every day? Who do you know that needs to hear the good news
of the risen Christ?

Prayer Points:
Pray that you would not let sin defeat you. Pray that you would live in the truth of the resurrection every day.
Pray that your students would know and understand by faith that Jesus lives and He is not
dead. Pray that no confusion would grip their minds this week. Pray that the Holy Spirit would
enable their ears and minds to hear this glorious truth.

Luke 24:1-12

Jesus died on the cross for all the sin (bad stuff) in the world.
1 Corinthians 15:3: For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received:
that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.
Some women who were followers of Jesus came to the place where He was buried to put
some spices in His tomb and on His body. They came three days after His body was buried in the
tomb. Nowadays we put flowers and gifts on peoples headstones, but back then they put spices
on the dead bodies.
Luke 24:1: But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the
spices they had prepared.
Jesus wasnt in the tomb. The stone had been moved. Two men in dazzling apparel stood by the
opening where the stone had been.
Luke 24:2-3: And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they
did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
The women didnt know what to think. They didnt know what was going on. They were also
scared. What scares you?
Luke 24:4: While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling

They asked the women why they were looking for Jesus.
Luke 24:5-7: And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said
to them, Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember
how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the
hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.
The women were so excited to find out that Jesus was not there. He was not dead. He was alive!
They ran back to tell the rest of Jesus friends.
Luke 24:8-11: And they remembered His words, and returning from the tomb they told all
these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary
the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, but

Luke 24:1-12

But Peter wanted to go to the empty tomb to see for himself, and he marveled at what he
found. Why do you think Peter was especially anxious to see if the testimony of the women was true?
(Answer: Peter had denied Jesus just days before the resurrection.)
Luke 24:12: But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths
by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
How did this truth of Jesus being raised from the dead, being alive, change the rest of Peters life?
Peter was one of the leaders in the early church. Acts 2:14 tells us that he preached to many
people in Jerusalem:But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them:
Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.
Peter told others about Jesus: As for the word that He sent to Israel, preaching good news of
peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout
all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed
Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing
all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. And we are witnesses of all that He
did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put Him to death by hanging Him on
a tree, but God raised Him on the third day (Acts 10:36-40).
Church history tells us that Peter died for his belief in Jesus. Jesus also told Peter this would
happen: Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk
wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will
dress you and carry you where you do not want to go (John 21:18).
Because Jesus is alive, we should live our lives doing work for the Lord, treasuring Him above
all else: Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work
of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Victory Over Death

Luke 24:1-12

Jesus resurrection from the dead (the fact that He came back to life after being crucified) was
talked about long before Jesus even came to earth. Jesus Himself predicted His own death while
He was here on earth: And He strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, saying, The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. Let these words sink into your ears: The Son
of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men (Luke 9:21-22, 44).
Many scriptural accounts tell of the resurrection of Jesus, but our Treasure Story will concentrate
on one passage from Luke 24.
Jesus came to earth in human form, had a body and died a real death.
Luke 23 records that a few women (who had been followers of Jesus) watch His body being
placed in a tomb and then leave to prepare spices for His burial. These spices were aromatic and
would help in covering the smell of Jesus decaying body: The women who had come with Him
from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and
prepared spices and ointments (55-56).
What do you use to cover up body odor? Perfume, deodorant, lotion? What is your favorite scent?

Scent Sensations
Humans can detect over 10,000 different smells.
Dont eat garlic or onions. Some people release the smell of these
plants through the pores in their skin.
Anosmia is the condition that makes people unable to smell.
Your sense of smell directly affects your sense of taste.
Sweet Pea is the best-selling lotion for teen girls at Bath & Body
Works. It smells like violets at first and then berries.
Right Guard is the best-selling, cheapest mens deodorant.

Smell can evoke a wide range of emotions such as happiness and
fear. Rhinencephalon, which literally means smell-brain, is the
region of the brain that controls the sense of smell and also
influences the entire emotional tone of a person.

Luke 24:1-12

Jesus rose from the dead. His body was no longer in the tomb. He had a bodily resurrection.
Early on the morning of the Sabbath, day three after Jesus death according to the timeline
found in Scripture (Luke 23:54, Luke 24:1, John 19:31), the women who had prepared the
spices had returned to the tomb to lavish the spices on His body. But they came upon an unexpected scene.
The stone was rolled away from the entrance to the tomb. This tomb was probably cut out
of stone, like a cave of sorts, and a large disk of stone was placed in front of it.
The body of Jesus was not there. Just two days earlier, the women had witnessed His body
being laid in that very tomb. Where had He gone? Dead men dont walk. Had someone
taken their Jesus? Had robbers come and stolen Him?
Heavenly beings appeared wearing dazzling apparel (angels according to John 20:12).
They spoke to the startled and bewildered group of mourning women, and their question probably puzzled them even more: Why do you seek the living among the dead?
(Luke 24:5) To the women, Jesus was dead. Then the men from heaven reminded them of
how Jesus prophesied about His own resurrection. Three times in Lukes Gospel Jesus tells
about His coming death (Luke 9:22, 44; 18:32-33). The men were reminding them of the
truth of Jesus prophesy, the must of the fulfilling of this miracle.
Luke 9:22: The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief
priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Luke 9:44: Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into
the hands of men.
Luke 18:32-33: For He will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. And after flogging Him, they will kill Him, and on the third day
He will rise.
Knowing these truths, what should our response be? The women ran and told the disciples.
Peter came and saw the empty tomb for himself and then went away marveling at what he had
seen. What is the best news youve ever heard? What did you do with that information? Did you
tell other people or did you keep it to yourself?

Who is your favorite superhero?

What is the job of a superhero? To defeat the bad guys, right? Well, if the ultimate bad guy is
Satan, than the ultimate Superhero is Jesus because of His resurrection.
The importance of the resurrection is that Jesus paid the penalty for our sin: Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same things, that
through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and
deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery (Hebrews 2:14-15).
What is the bad news?
Romans 6:23a: For the wages of sin is death.
What is the good news?
Romans 6:23b:But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Deaths penalty had been paid. God offered the right penalty that was due when Jesus died for the
sins that we committed. When the resurrection took place, death was defeated.
Now what? What are we to do with this good news?
This glorious news should give us freedom to live for Him and produce gratitude in us
that makes us want to please our Savior who died and now lives. In Pauls first letter to
the church at Corinth, he writes of the truth and hope of the resurrection and gives this
charge to the believers: Therefore [because of the resurrection], my beloved brothers
[those who believe in the Gospel of Jesus], be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in
the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain (15:58).

you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the
dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our
preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting
God, because we testified about God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise if it
is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has
been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your

Luke 24:1-12

John 20:17: Jesus said to her, Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but
go to my brothers and say to them,I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and
your God.
John 20:19-28: On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked
where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to
them, Peace be with you. When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then
the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As
the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. And when He had said this, He breathed on
them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven
them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.
Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the
other disciples told him,We have seen the Lord. But he said to them,Unless I see in His hands the
mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into His side,
I will never believe.
Eight days later, His disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors
were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then He said to
Thomas, Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side.
Do not disbelieve, but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God!
John 21:4-14: Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know
that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, Children, do you have any fish? They answered Him, No.
He said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast
it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom
Jesus loved therefore said to Peter,It is the Lord! When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he
put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. The other
disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but
about a hundred yards off.
When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread.
Jesus said to them,Bring some of the fish that you have just caught. So Simon Peter went aboard
and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the
net was not torn. Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. Now none of the disciples dared
ask Him, Who are you? They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to
them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples
after He was raised from the dead.

Victory Over Death

Luke 24:1-12

The disciples of Jesus and others died for their beliefs that Jesus rose from the dead. Not many
will die for a lie. Church history and early records document the deaths of some of Jesus followers.
The following men knew the resurrection to be true:
Peter John 21:18-19a: Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and
another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. (This He said to show by what
kind of death he was to glorify God.)
Stephen Acts 7:54-58: Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground
their teeth at him. But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and
Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And he said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the
Son of Man standing at the right hand of God. But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped
their ears and rushed together at him. Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the
witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
James Acts 12:1-3: About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged
to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword, and when he saw that it pleased
the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread.
Paul (beheaded by Nero in Rome) 2 Timothy 4:7-8: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to
all who have loved His appearing.
The greatest witness to the resurrection of Jesus is the life of a believer. The Gospel of Christ
should radically impact every moment of our lives. The truth of the Gospel should change our hearts
and behaviors.
Corinthians 15:1-11: Now I would remind you, brothers, of the Gospel I preached to you, which
you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word
I preached to youunless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what
I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried,
that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He appeared to
Cephas, then to the twelve. Then He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time,
most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then
to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared also to me. For I am the least
of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But
by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary,
I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

Victory Over Death

Luke 24:1-12

Romans 6:1-14: What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By
no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have
been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with
Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of
the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in
a resurrection like His. We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of
sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has
died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live
with Him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer
has dominion over Him. For the death He died He died to sin, once for all, but the life He lives He
lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey
its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments
for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who
have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as
instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over
you, since you are not under law but under grace.
From these verses, we learn that we are dead to sin. Jesus died
so that we could be free from sin. We walk in LIFE because
Jesus rose from the dead. Our old way of life (sin, flesh and self)
is dead, in the grave, and it will stay there. We are ALIVE to Christ!

treasure
Treasure Point: We have victory over sin and death through the work of Christ
on the cross and the empty tomb. Our lives should reflect this truth.

My Mission: (15 minutes)

Our mission may not involve hanging on a cross, being jailed,

or being burned at the stake . . . but we have other, more invisible obstacles. Ours is a society
built by pride, materialism, and dedication to the status quo. In a world built on free will instead
of Gods will, we must be the Freaks. While we may not be called to martyr our lives, we must

martyr our way of life. We must put our selfish ways to death and march to a different beat. Then
the world will see Jesus. Michael Tait, Jesus Freaks, pg. 8

How will your life look different this week because of the truth of the resurrection? How will
you engage your own heart with the Gospel daily and why does it matter that you do this?
Do you have friends who dont know Jesus, who arent really living life because they havent
found the LIFE, Jesus? How will you engage them this week with the Gospel?

Prayer Time: (10 minutes)

connecting church and home

Have you ever received or written a love letter? The one thing that makes a love letter effective is the
recipients belief in the authenticity of the author of the letter. The love letter means so much more
when the one receiving it has seen love on display prior to receiving the letter. Imagine receiving a
love letter from someone you have never met. How would it make you feel? What would be missing?
In Gods love letter to usthe Biblewe read in John 15:13, Greater love has no one than this, that
someone lay down his life for his friends.

connect
God displayed His love to us in the resurrection of His Son. How significant is this? The birth, life, death
and resurrection of Christ are the turning points in world history. There is a great temptation to view
this as something basic that we have already heard and know. This would be a huge mistake for us as
parents to make. This coming Sunday, your children will study Luke 24:1-12. Jesus victory over death
provides access for us to receive this same victory over death and also to have daily victory over sin.
The Gospel is not something we grow past. Its something we grow deeper into every day.
What does it mean to the Christian faith that the tomb is empty?
Treasure Verse: The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who
gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in
vain (1 Corinthians 15:56-58).

Acts 20:24: But I do not account my

life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I

may finish my course and the ministry that I received
from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the Gospel of the
grace of God.
