Since he ofcially announced his candidacy for president last weekend, Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas) has reminded Republican voters of his support for a U.S. constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Perry, who has emerged as one of the three leading GOP presidential contenders, has also reminded conservative party activists that he played a lead role in helping to pass a 2005 Texas constitutional amendment banning both same-sex marriage and civil unions. Political observers have said Perry appears to be pushing his credentials as a same-sex marriage opponent following criticism he received from social conservative leaders last month, when he said the New York State Legislatures approval of a same-sex marriage bill could be defended on the principle of states rights. The Republican National Convention in Tampa Bay, Fla., and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., are 13 months away, but many are already wondering how the two parties will address LGBT issues in their 2012 platforms. The platform from 2008 was a pretty good platform, as are most of the platforms of state Democratic parties around the country, said Michael Mitchell, executive director of the National Stonewall Democrats. LGBT activists meet with D.C. police chief

Thirteen representatives of the LGBT community met on Tuesday with D.C. Police Chef Cathy Lanier and other police ofcials to discuss what participants said was a range of issues related to police response to antiLGBT violence. It was very productive and a lot of information was exchanged, said Rick Rosendall, vice president of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance. According to accounts by Rosendall; Chris Farris, former chair of the local group Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV); and gay activist Nick McCoy, Lanier made it clear that she would take strict disciplinary action against police ofcers who fail to follow the departments policies for responding to calls for help by citizens, including LGBT citizens. The activists said Lanier was referring to the widely publicized incident in late July when ve lesbians were attacked and beaten by two male suspects outside the Columbia Heights Metro station and police ofcers responding to the scene refused to take a report. Two of the victims in the attack said the ofcers also released one of the attackers after initially holding him after the victims identied him as one of the men who assaulted them. Police have since arrested one of the two attackers on a charge of simple assault and making threats of bodily harm. The charges were listed as anti-lesbian bias-related crimes. Lanier has said the matter was under investigation but the ofcers could be red for failing to take a police report. Farris said Lanier also expressed concern and promised to look into reports by the activists attending the meeting that members of the departments Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit have been far less visible in the community over the past few years compared to past years. GLOV members have complained that ofcers and police investigators, such as homicide detectives, havent been calling on the GLLU for assistance in LGBT-related cases in an apparent violation of department policy. McCoy said that in response to concerns raised by transgender activists Earline Budd, Jeri Hughes, and others, Lanier promised to determine whether the department can improve its communication with the LGBT community when seeking help in solving crimes against transgender people. Hughes raised concerns that homicide investigators have yet to make visible progress on at least three unsolved murders of transgender women. She made a commitment to follow up on all of these things, said Farris. Among those attending the meeting, in addition to Rosendall, Farris, Budd, and Hughes, were Brian Watson of Transgender Health Empowerment; Ruby Corado and Jason Terry of the D.C. Trans Coalition; June Crenshaw and Shauna Fecher of Rainbow Response Coalition, a local group that monitors LGBTrelated domestic violence; A.J. Singletary of GLOV; and local activists Alison Gardner and Isaiah Toney. Deputy Chief Diane Groomes was among the police ofcials who joined Lanier at the meeting.

Chesapeake Pride to be held Saturday

Chesapeake Pride has its annual event slated for Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at Mayo Beach Park in Edgewater, Md. Its about 35 miles from D.C. just south of Annapolis. The event is free but organizers are taking donations at the gate to defray costs. Its the culmination of several Pride events scattered throughout the past week. Last Saturday, 50 went on an evening cruise and two discussions were held on weeknights. This is the rst year the event has had more than the Saturday beach party main day. Planning committee co-chair Kim Hinken said the expansion was a logical step since the event has grown by about 20 to 30 percent the last few years. Stephen J. Brown, 82
Stephen J. Brown, Ph.D., a former president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, died July 23 at his home in Dupont Circle. He was 82. Brown was born in Moline, Ill., and grew up in Washington. He died at home in his sleep, according to his friend, Donald Bitsberger, who said Brown was in relatively good health. The cause of death is unknown. Brown spent his entire career as a professor of English literature, teaching in Washington at George Washington University for several years and completing his career as professor of English at the George Mason University in Virginia. He was a graduate of Yale University where he earned his bachelors degree in 1950, and his Ph.D. in 1959. Brown also attended Clare College, University of Cambridge, England. Brown, who was gay, was a lifelong political activist in Washington working for gay rights. He was a Kennedy delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1968. Loyal Snyder, a longtime friend, said Brown was a kind, generous and caring man. He was a scholar with great interest in the history of homosexuality in Western literature. He was best known for his ready sense of wit and strongly held political opinions, Snyder said. Brown is survived by his sister, Virginia (Mimi) of Essex Falls, N.J. He will be missed by his friends, Donald and Diane Bitsberger, Snyder, and many friends from the Yale Class of 1950, the faculty of George Mason University, and the local D.C. political community. His marriage to the late Loraine Brown, ended in divorce. He was cremated and will be buried with his parents in Rock Creek Cemetery. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m. St. Patricks Episcopal Church, (4700 Whitehaven Parkway, N.W.) in Washington. Donations in memory of Brown may be made to the

LGBT event planned for MLK dedication week

An LGBT discussion event is planned for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Rayburn Building on Capitol Hill to coincide with the festivities surrounding the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial next weekend. The event, a joint effort conceived by the D.C. Host Committee, the Mayors Ofce of GLBT Affairs, National Black Justice Coalition, the Task Force and Human Rights Campaign, is planned to ensure gay visibility in the bounty of special events surrounding the dedication. Effort underway to award Kameny Freedom Medal

Activists say highest civilian honor should go to gay legend

An effort is under way to have gay activist Frank Kameny honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian award, from the White House. Long-time San Francisco-based activist/ blogger Michael Petrelis is unofcially spearheading the effort. He says Kameny is highly deserving. He is a civic-minded American who has brought America more freedom through his activism, Petrelis said. Listen, Frank is 86 years old. Before I was even born, he was doing gay activism work at a very dangerous time if you want to go through all the things hes done over the years, wed be here for the next two hours. Widely considered one of the most inuential gures in early gay liberation, Kameny was red from the Army Map Service in 1957 for being gay. He protested it and argued his case to the Supreme Court. In 1961 he and fellow activist Jack Nichols co-founded the Mattachine Society of Washington and by 1965, he was picketing colleague Charles Francis, Londons Peter Tatchell and law professor Art Leonard. Few people are as deserving of the Presidential Medal of Freedom as Dr. Franklin Kameny, wrote Richard Sincere, president of Virginia-based Gays and Lesbians for Individual Liberty. The effort, though, has not been without controversy. When Petrelis oated the idea in the comments section of a recent Blade article about a new White House interim LGBT liaison, some said the community has more pressing concerns. Kamenys been honored plenty over the years, wrote New Jersey-based trans activist Rebecca Juro. And this isnt something [that] should be high on our communitys agenda. What should be top on the agenda is that we still live in a country where in 29 states you can still be red or thrown out of your home just for being gay and in 35 just for being transgender. She reiterated her views during a phone interview this week stressing its not a matter of her not feeling Kameny is worthy; she just thinks the community has more pressing issues. Kameny concedes his house is overowing with accolades. One wall in his upstairs ofce is covered in plaques. Theres another mountain in a spare bedroom that havent been hung yet. A table in the dining room is full of freestanding trophies and mementos. A spare D.C. street sign designating three blocks of 17th Street N.W. in his honor is propped up on a living room sofa. Kameny says he would be highly honored if the White House chose to award him the medal, which comes in the form of star medallion surrounded by gold eagles attached to a blue-and-white ribbon. It would be very nice, Kameny said. It would sort of tie up what has been a very long effort and it would leave me feeling very content. Im deeply appreciative of Michael Petrelis effort. The White House has been noncommittal on the matter. Outgoing White House LGBT liaison Brian Bond told Petrelis that Kamenys name was in consideration. He sent me about 25 words in the tersest of statements back in 2009 when I rst proposed the idea, then Ive never heard from him ever again about this, Petrelis says. White House spokesperson Shin Inouye said in an e-mail this week, the best we can do is point you to the website. Lesbian tennis legend Billie Jean King has been awarded the Medal of Freedom. Harvey Milk, the slain pioneering member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, was awarded the medal posthumously. Kameny says he hopes hes most remembered for the phrase gay is good.

Gay man loses race for Rehoboth mayor

Incumbent accused of targeting gay-owned businesses

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. Gay businessman Tom McGlone lost his bid to become mayor of the resort city of Rehoboth Beach, Del., on Saturday, nishing behind seven-term incumbent Mayor Sam Cooper by a vote of 665 to 483. Gay restaurant owner Mark Hunker won his bid for a seat on the Rehoboth City Commission, the towns legislative body. His election leaves two open gays on the six-member commission. Commissioner Pat Colluzzi, a lesbian, was not up for reelection this year. McGlones status as an openly gay candidate did not emerge as an issue in a town that has long been a popular vacation destination for LGBT people in the mid-Atlantic region, including Washington and Baltimore. But he did emerge as an advocate for the towns tourist-oriented businesses, including bars and restaurants, which have complained that the Cooper-led town government was harming them through overly restrictive regulations. Among McGlones supporters were the owners of the popular gay restaurant and bar Aqua Grill. One of its two owners was arrested last year for allegedly keeping the establishments outdoor patio open beyond a required 11 p.m. closing time. Police later dropped the charge after discovering that Aqua Grill was exempt from the closing time restriction. Aqua Grills owners and customers, however, became outraged earlier this year when a town code enforcement ofcer informed the venue that it was in violation of another ordinance for ying a ag over the sidewalk in front of the restaurant two inches lower than the code requirement. Rehoboth gay activist Peter Schott said hes concerned that Coopers reelection will be viewed as a signal for continuing a regulatory enforcement program that some view as targeting gay establishments. Cooper has strongly disputed claims that the enforcement action was targeting any particular group or type of business. He said the enforcement effort targeted everyone found to be in violation of the towns rules and laws pertaining to excessive noise or other quality of life issues such as trash disposal. In an interview with the Blade last month, Cooper said he welcomes the towns diverse array of residents and visitors, including LGBT people. He said he was proud to have helped to build and maintain a town infrastructure that has resulted in a beautiful beach and boardwalk that attracts everyone to Rehoboth Beach. Observers familiar with Rehoboth said Cooper appears to have succeeded in portraying McGlone as someone who lacked sufcient experience to become mayor because he never served in an elective post in the town or on a town board or committee. McGlone argued that his experience as the owner of a successful nancial planning business, a masters in business administration degree, and his commitment to improving the towns relations with small businesses, among other skills, qualied him for the job. His supporters say he was well qualied to be mayor but note that the majority of the towns voters consist of longtime residents and homeowners who tend to support Cooper and agree with Coopers position on regulating bars and other nightlife businesses. Although McGlone had the support of some longtime residents, observers say his base of support came largely from the growing but minority faction of voters who own homes in the town but dont live there full-time. This group is eligible to vote under the Rehoboth election law, even though most live in D.C., Baltimore and other areas outside Delaware. They dont turn out to vote as often as the permanent, full-time residents. Well obviously Im disappointed, McGlone said after the election results were announced. But I think that as a result of my running we lifted the bar. And I hope the current government has their ears open in terms of the issues that came up during the course of the campaign because I think those are still valid issues even though I didnt get elected. Schott, who supported McGlone even though he lives just outside the Rehoboth town limits, said he and other McGlone backers were hopeful that a larger than usual turnout of voters, including new residents who tend to support entertainment businesses, would carry McGlone to victory. But the results indicate that didnt happen. The turnout of 1,148 people who voted for mayor in the Saturday, Aug. 13, election was slightly less than the 1,209 ballots cast for mayor in the August 2008 election. In that election, Cooper defeated challenger Paul Kuhns by a margin of 675 to 534 votes.

N.C. activists ght to avoid amendment

CHARLOTTE LGBT activists in North Carolina are battling a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage being considered by lawmakers this September. According to the Charlotte Observer, similar amendments had been proposed for years, but never reached full oor votes in the Democratic legislatures. With Republican control over both North Carolina houses, however, the amendment has its greatest chance yet of passing. Equality North Carolina hopes to send more than 50,000 postcards to lawmakers by the start of the September session in hopes of convincing them to vote down the amendment. If approved by a three-fths majority, the ban goes to the ballot where voters will have the nal approval. You cant have the tyranny of the majority impose their will on the people who need to be protected, Ed Crabtree told the Charlotte Observer at a gay and lesbian lm festival where Equality North Carolina collected 500 post cards for lawmakers.

White House to name full-time LGBT liaison

Insiders disagree over need for dedicated position

The White House disclosed on Aug. 10 that it was naming Raul Alvillar, an aide to Vice President Joe Biden, to serve as the interim point of contact for the LGBT community until a permanent liaison is named. Alvillar is gay. But on the following day, the White House informed Politico that it had selected a permanent replacement for the position held by Brian Bond, the current White House LGBT liaison, whos leaving his post later this month to work for the Democratic National Committee. According to Politico, White House staffer Stephanie Valencia was named deputy director at the White House Ofce of Public Engagement. Bond has served as deputy director of the Ofce of Public Engagement, where he has acted as LGBT liaison while performing other duties. Valencias appointment raised speculation among LGBT political insiders over whether the White House would be assigning the new LGBT liaison person to a new position within the Ofce of Public Engagement and whether the new post would be above, below, or the same as that of Bonds in the White House pecking order. The development comes at a time when Richard Socarides, the White House LGBT liaison during the Clinton administration, has criticized the Obama administration for not elevating the LGBT liaison post to the more authoritative title of special assistant to the president. Such a title, which Socarides held during Clintons second term in ofce, gave him access to the president, according to Socarides, who now serves as president of Equality Matters. White House spokesperson Shin Inouye informed the Blade last week of Alvillars designation as interim liaison to the LGBT community. This week, Inouye declined to say whether Valencias appointment was a signal that the new permanent LGBT liaison would be given a new title and new job duties in addition to his or her role as LGBT liaison. Inouye also declined to comment on whether the new LGBT liaison would have LGBT-related issues as his or her sole job portfolio or whether the new person would have other duties like Bond had. LOS ANGELES One of the most memorable faces from Will & Grace, has been signed to star in an NBC sitcom about two gay dads who are tasked with raising a 12 year old. According to Entertainment Weekly, Sean Hayes, who played the iconic Jack McFarland for eight seasons on the groundbreaking gay sitcom, will return to NBC to play one half of a gay couple that suddenly nd themselves parents. Hayes ofcially came out as gay last year, after years of speculation. When coming out to the Advocate, Hayes said I feel like Ive contributed monumentally to the success of the gay movement in America, and if anyone wants to argue that, Im open to it.

Bachmann faces questions about her LGBT views

WASHINGTON After refusing to say on NBC whether or not she considered a same-sex couple raising children a family, GOP presidential hopeful, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann told CNN Sunday that she would reinstate Dont Ask, Dont Tell, if elected president. I would be in consultation with our commanders, but yes, I probably will, Bachmann told CNNs State of the Union on Sunday. After winning the Ames straw poll in Iowa on Saturday, Bachmann visited two political talk shows this week, facing LGBT-related questions at both. On NBCs Meet the Press, when pressed by David Gregory as to whether a same-sex couple raising children is a family, Bachmann replied, You know, all of these kind of questions really arent about what people are concerned about right now. Bachmann also dodged a question about appointing LGBT people to administration positions and the federal bench.

Log Cabin to honor two Dont Ask repeal allies in Senate

WASHINGTON Log Cabin Republicans will honor Sens. Scott Brown (Mass.) and Susan Collins (Maine) at their national dinner on Sept. 20. The dinner will coincide with the same day that the law repealing Dont Ask, Dont Tell will go into effect. Brown and Collins who joined six other Republicans in crossing the aisle for repeal will be given Log Cabins highest honor, the Spirit of Lincoln Award, for assisting in ending the 17-year-old law that saw the discharge of nearly 14,000 troops, many mission-critical, such as Arabic linguists.

Inouyes statement that the new LGBT liaison would be in place in October also raised speculation that the White House has already selected that person. How could they declare the new person will start in October if they dont have someone lined up already? said one LGBT activist who asked not to be identied. The activist said Inouyes statement that the new person would be a full-time liaison to the LGBT community suggests that the White House may be changing the position from the one held by Bond by assigning all or most of the new liaisons duties to LGBT-related issues. Winnie Stachelberg, former legislative director for the Human Rights Campaign who now serves as senior vice president for external affairs for the Center for American Progress, said she has learned from White House sources that Alvillars interim appointment was limited to taking on Bonds duties as LGBT liaison at the White House. Raul is not taking over as deputy director of the Ofce of Public Engagement, she said. Raul is the interim replacement on the LGBT set of issues that Brian worked on. Stephanie has been named as the new deputy director of OPE, and her role and Rauls role do not intersect or overlap, Stachelberg said. Stachelberg, who lobbies the White House on LGBT-related issues, said she had no knowledge of the title or other responsibilities the new permanent LGBT liaison at the White House will have. But she questioned the need for a high-ranking White House ofcial to serve as the sole LGBT liaison for the Obama administration, as suggested by Socarides. I think its important to note that Brian was never the only point person in the White House, and they have really assembled a team, Stachelberg said. And while Brian has left that team, the team remains.

Encouraging signs of changing times in Cuba

In a development considered unthinkable just a few years ago, a transgender woman and a man identifying himself as gay were married in a public wedding in Havana on Aug. 13, with family members, friends and newly emerging gay activists attending the ceremony. This is the rst wedding between a transsexual woman and a gay man, the 31-year-old groom, Ignacio Estrada, told the Associated Press. We celebrate it at the top of our voices and afrm that this is a step forward for the gay community in Cuba, the AP quoted Estrada as saying. Although same-sex marriage remains illegal in Cuba, Estrada and his new wife, Wendy Iriepa, 37, told members of a large international media contingent covering the ceremony that their relationship and wedding symbolized some of the positive changes taking place in Cuba for the LGBT community. But the two said their relationship and wedding also represented a protest of sorts against the governments continuing crackdown against dissent and free speech. Estrada is a member of an independent gay rights organization that formed in deance of a strict government rule barring political organizations that are not approved by the government. Fellow gay dissidents were among those attending his wedding, he told the media. Iriepa told the Miami Herald that her relationship with Estrada prompted ofcials at Cubas National Sex Education Center in Havana, where she worked, to warn her about her association with a dissident. She later resigned from her job in protest over what she said were accusations of disloyalty to the government for her relationship with the man she chose to marry. Iriepa has disclosed publicly that she had gender reassignment surgery in 2007 under a new government policy that now includes such procedures as part of Cubas universal health care system. One of the leading advocates of the policy change, according to reports from government ofcials, was Mariela Castro, the daughter of Cubas current president, Raul Castro, and niece of Fidel Castro. In yet another development considered remarkable by LGBT activists in the U.S. and Canada who are familiar with Cuba, Mariela Castro has emerged as a champion of LGBT equality in Cuba in her role as director of CENESEX. She has organized a Gay Pride parade and is coordinating a CENESEX-sponsored campaign to discourage prejudice and discrimination against LGBT people.

Yet some U.S. gay activists with ties to LGBT people in Cuba say the pro-LGBT policies promoted by Mariela Castro are taking place within a political system that prohibits freedom of expression and any criticism of the Communist Party-led government that runs Cuba. While they see the changes that Mariela Castro has brought about as positive for LGBT people, these activists say LGBT people, like all other Cubans, remain under the control of a repressive government that denies its people freedoms taken for granted in other countries, including access to the Internet. Yes there is a trickling, if you will, of some freedoms here and there, said Heriberto Herb Sosa, president of the Unity Coalition, a Miami-based LGBT Latino advocacy organization. Sosa said his organization has developed a network of LGBT correspondents inside Cuba who communicate clandestinely with his group. He said some of them write articles for a Spanish language LGBT online magazine, Ambiente, which Sosa publishes. Unfortunately the regime really hasnt changed much in the way they offer this relaxation, he said. Its always if you play by the rules, if youre part of the Communist Party, if youre in favor of the government those are the people that are getting a little bit more freedoms, including those within the LGBT community. According to Sosa, while Mariela Castro has promoted LGBT-friendly programs, many dissidents are being thrown in jail or are being harassed and beaten as recently as last week. Other LGBT activists more supportive of Cuba argue that Miami-based Cuban Americans, such as Sosa, have a longstanding bias against the Cuban government, in part, because their parents or grandparents lost

nancial assets when they ed Cuba for the U.S. in the 1960s following the Fidel Castroled Cuban revolution of 1959. The politically inuential Cuban American community in South Florida has been credited with persuading Congress and at least eight U.S. presidents to continue the U.S. economic and trade boycott of Cuba, which critics say hurts the Cuban people more than the government. Cuban American organizations argue that the U.S. trade boycott is needed to set the stage for the eventual replacement of the current Cuban regime with a new democratic government. This is not our personal feelings or opinions, said Sosa. This is based on what we know is happening inside the island from actual LGBT leaders and dissidents and writers from within the island and every single day send us factual information as to what is going on. The international human rights advocacy organization, Human Rights Watch, has called on the U.S. to end the trade embargo against Cuba. But the group has also been highly critical of Cubas human rights record, saying little has changed since Raul Castro replaced his brother Fidel as the countrys top leader. Cubas laws empower the state to criminalize virtually all forms of dissent, and grant ofcials extraordinary authority to penalize people who try to exercise their basic rights, the group said in a June 1, 2011, statement. The European-based human rights group Amnesty International issued a statement in March saying that, in response to international pressure, Cuba released about 50 political prisoners who had been jailed since 2003. However, Amnesty International said the government was detaining a new crop of

political dissidents. Hundreds of pro-democracy activists have suffered harassment, intimidation and arbitrary arrest in recent weeks as the Cuban government employs new tactics to stamp out dissent, the statement says. The Obama administration has relaxed some restrictions that, in the past, have barred most U.S. citizens from traveling to Cuba and prevented Americans, including Cuban Americans, from sending money to assist Cuban relatives. But the administration earlier this year joined members of Congress in condemning the Cuban government for sentencing an American citizen, Alan Gross, to 15 years in prison for bringing satellite and other communications equipment into Cuba under a U.S. government sponsored program to promote democracy. Gross said he brought in the equipment to assist the islands small Jewish community obtain access to the Internet. Cuban authorities accused Gross of engaging in espionage activities on behalf of the U.S. government. With that as a backdrop, the U.S. State Department surprised some political observers in June when it included an LGBTrelated project in an ofcial request for proposals from independent contractors to promote democracy in Cuba. The request for proposals was issued by the State Departments Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. The bureau seeks proposals to strengthen grassroots organizations to create the conditions that allow meaningful and unhindered participation by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in all aspects of Cuban society, a State Department document

INDICATION: REYATAZ (atazanavir sulfate) is a prescription medicine used in combination with other medicines to treat people 6 years of age and older who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). REYATAZ has been studied in a 48-week trial in patients who have taken anti-HIV medicines and a 96-week trial in patients who have never taken anti-HIV medicines. REYATAZ does not cure HIV or lower your chance of passing HIV to others. People taking REYATAZ may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV infection. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Do not take REYATAZ if you are allergic to REYATAZ or to any of its ingredients. Do not take REYATAZ if you are taking the following medicines due to potential for serious, life-threatening side effects or death: Versed (midazolam) when taken by mouth, Halcion (triazolam), ergot medicines (dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, ergotamine, and methylergonovine such as Cafergot, Migranal, D.H.E. 45, ergotrate maleate, Methergine, and others), Propulsid (cisapride), or Orap (pimozide). Do not take REYATAZ with the following medicines due to potential for serious side effects: Camptosar (irinotecan), Crixivan (indinavir), Mevacor (lovastatin), Zocor (simvastatin), Uroxatral (alfuzosin), or Revatio (sildenafil). Do not take REYATAZ with the following medicines as they may lower the amount of REYATAZ in your blood, which may lead to increased HIV viral load and resistance to REYATAZ or other anti-HIV medicines: rifampin (also known as Rimactane , Rifadin , Rifater , or Rifamate), St. Johns wort (Hypericum perforatum)containing products, or Viramune (nevirapine). Serevent Diskus (salmeterol) and Advair (salmeterol with fluticasone) are not recommended with REYATAZ. Do not take Vfend (voriconazole) if you are taking REYATAZ and Norvir (ritonavir). The above lists of medicines are not complete. Taking REYATAZ with some other medicines may require your therapy to be monitored more closely or may require a change in dose or dose schedule of REYATAZ or the other medicine. Discuss with your healthcare provider all prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamin and herbal supplements, or other health preparations you are taking or plan to take. Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. REYATAZ use during pregnancy has not been associated with an increase in birth defects. Pregnant women have experienced serious side effects when taking REYATAZ with other HIV medicines called nucleoside analogues. After your baby is born, tell your healthcare provider if your babys skin or the white part of his/her eyes turns yellow. You should not breast-feed if you are HIV-positive. Also tell your healthcare provider if you have end-stage kidney disease managed with hemodialysis or severe liver dysfunction. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any side effects, symptoms, or conditions, including the following: Mild rash (redness and itching) without other symptoms sometimes occurs in patients taking REYATAZ, most often in the first few weeks after the medicine is started, and usually goes away within 2 weeks with no change in treatment.

Severe rash may develop with other symptoms that could be serious and potentially cause death. If you develop a rash with any of the following symptoms, stop using REYATAZ and call your healthcare provider right away: Shortness of breath General ill-feeling or flu-like symptoms Fever Muscle or joint aches Conjunctivitis (red or inflamed eyes, like pink eye) Blisters Mouth sores Swelling of your face Yellowing of the skin and/or eyes may occur due to increases in bilirubin levels in the blood (bilirubin is made by the liver). A change in the way your heart beats may occur. You may feel dizzy or lightheaded. These could be symptoms of a heart problem. Diabetes and high blood sugar may occur in patients taking protease inhibitor medicines like REYATAZ. Some patients may need changes in their diabetes medicine. If you have liver disease, including hepatitis B or C, it may get worse when you take anti-HIV medicines like REYATAZ. Kidney stones have been reported in patients taking REYATAZ. Signs or symptoms of kidney stones include pain in your side, blood in your urine, and pain when you urinate. Some patients with hemophilia have increased bleeding problems with protease inhibitor medicines like REYATAZ. Changes in body fat have been seen in some patients taking anti-HIV medicines. The cause and long-term effects are not known at this time. Immune reconstitution syndrome has been seen in some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS) and a history of opportunistic infection. Signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after starting anti-HIV treatment, including REYATAZ. Gallbladder disorders (including gallstones and gallbladder inflammation) have been reported in patients taking REYATAZ. Other common side effects of REYATAZ taken with other anti-HIV medicines include: nausea; headache; stomach pain; vomiting; diarrhea; depression; fever; dizziness; trouble sleeping; numbness, tingling, or burning of hands or feet; and muscle pain. You should take REYATAZ once daily with food (a meal or snack). Swallow the capsules whole; do not open the capsules. REYATAZ (atazanavir sulfate) About all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show your healthcare provider. For more information, see What important information should I know about taking REYATAZ with other medicines? and Who should not take REYATAZ? Some medicines can cause serious side effects if taken with REYATAZ. How should I take REYATAZ? Take REYATAZ once every day exactly as instructed by your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider will prescribe the amount of REYATAZ that is right for you. Always take REYATAZ with food (a meal or snack) to help it work better. Swallow the capsules whole. Do not open the capsules. Take REYATAZ at the same time each day. If you are taking antacids or didanosine (VIDEX or VIDEX EC), take REYATAZ 2 hours before or 1 hour after these medicines. If you are taking medicines for indigestion, heartburn, or ulcers such as AXID (nizatidine), PEPCID AC (famotidine), TAGAMET (cimetidine), ZANTAC (ranitidine), AcipHex (rabeprazole), NEXIUM (esomeprazole), PREVACID (lansoprazole), PRILOSEC (omeprazole), or PROTONIX (pantoprazole), talk to your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop taking REYATAZ without first talking with your healthcare provider. It is important to stay under a healthcare providers care while taking REYATAZ. When your supply of REYATAZ starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider or pharmacy. It is important not to run out of REYATAZ. The amount of HIV in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. If you miss a dose of REYATAZ, take it as soon as possible and then take your next scheduled dose at its regular time. If, however, it is within 6 hours of your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Wait and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not double the next dose. It is important that you do not miss any doses of REYATAZ or your other anti-HIV medicines. If you take more than the prescribed dose of REYATAZ, call your healthcare provider or poison control center right away. What are the possible side effects of REYATAZ? The following list of side effects is not complete. Report any new or continuing symptoms to your healthcare provider. If you have questions about side effects, ask your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider may be able to help you manage these side effects. The following side effects have been reported with REYATAZ: mild rash (redness and itching) without other symptoms sometimes occurs in patients taking REYATAZ, most often in the first few weeks after the medicine is started. Rashes usually go away within 2 weeks with no change in treatment. If you develop signs or symptoms of kidney stones (pain in your side, blood in your urine, pain when you urinate) tell your healthcare provider promptly.

Read the Patient Information that comes with REYATAZ before you start using it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet provides a summary about REYATAZ and does not include everything there is to know about your medicine. This information does not take the place of talking with your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. What is REYATAZ? REYATAZ is a prescription medicine used with other anti-HIV medicines to treat people 6 years of age and older who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). REYATAZ is a type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV infection destroys CD4+ (T) cells, which are important to the immune system. The immune system helps fight infection. After a large number of (T) cells are destroyed, AIDS develops. REYATAZ helps to block HIV protease, an enzyme that is needed for the HIV virus to multiply. REYATAZ may lower the amount of HIV in your blood, help your body keep its supply of CD4+ (T) cells, and reduce the risk of death and illness associated with HIV. Does REYATAZ cure HIV or AIDS? REYATAZ does not cure HIV infection or AIDS. At present there is no cure for HIV infection. People taking REYATAZ may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV infection. Opportunistic infections are infections that develop because the immune system is weak. Some of these conditions are pneumonia, herpes virus infections, and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections. It is very important that you see your healthcare provider regularly while taking REYATAZ. REYATAZ does not lower your chance of passing HIV to other people through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. For your health and the health of others, it is important to always practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Never use or share dirty needles. Who should not take REYATAZ? Do not take REYATAZ if you: are taking certain medicines. (See What important information should I know about taking REYATAZ with other medicines?) Serious life-threatening side effects or death may happen. Before you take REYATAZ, tell your healthcare provider about all medicines you are taking or planning to take. These include other prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. are allergic to REYATAZ or to any of its ingredients. The active ingredient is atazanavir sulfate. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in REYATAZ. Tell your healthcare provider if you think you have had an allergic reaction to any of these ingredients. What should I tell my healthcare provider before I take REYATAZ? Tell your healthcare provider: If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. REYATAZ use during pregnancy has not been associated with an increase in birth defects. ORAP (pimozide, used for Tourettes disorder). PROPULSID (cisapride, used for certain stomach problems). Triazolam, also known as HALCION (used for insomnia). Midazolam, also known as VERSED (used for sedation), when taken by mouth. Do not take the following medicines with REYATAZ because of possible serious side effects: CAMPTOSAR (irinotecan, used for cancer). CRIXIVAN (indinavir, used for HIV infection). Both REYATAZ and CRIXIVAN sometimes cause increased levels of bilirubin in the blood. Cholesterol-lowering medicines MEVACOR (lovastatin) or ZOCOR (simvastatin). UROXATRAL (alfuzosin, used to treat benign enlargement of the prostate). REVATIO (sildenafil, used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension). Do not take the following medicines with REYATAZ because they may lower the amount of REYATAZ in your blood. This may lead to an increased HIV viral load. Resistance to REYATAZ or cross-resistance to other HIV medicines may develop: Rifampin (also known as RIMACTANE, RIFADIN, RIFATER, or RIFAMATE, used for tuberculosis). St. Johns wort (Hypericum perforatum), an herbal product sold as a dietary supplement, or products containing St. Johns wort. VIRAMUNE (nevirapine, used for HIV infection). The following medicines are not recommended with REYATAZ: SEREVENT DISKUS (salmeterol) and ADVAIR (salmeterol with fluticasone), used to treat asthma, emphysema/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also known as COPD. Do not take the following medicine if you are taking REYATAZ and NORVIR together: VFEND (voriconazole). The following medicines may require your healthcare provider to monitor your therapy more closely (for some medicines a change in the dose or dose schedule may be needed): CIALIS (tadalafil), LEVITRA (vardenafil), or VIAGRA (sildenafil), used to treat erectile dysfunction. REYATAZ may increase the chances of serious side effects that can happen with CIALIS, LEVITRA, or VIAGRA. Do not use CIALIS, LEVITRA, or VIAGRA while you are taking REYATAZ unless your healthcare provider tells you it is okay. ADCIRCA (tadalafil) or TRACLEER (bosentan), used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. LIPITOR (atorvastatin) or CRESTOR (rosuvastatin). There is an increased chance of serious side effects if you take REYATAZ with this cholesterollowering medicine. Medicines for abnormal heart rhythm: CORDARONE (amiodarone), lidocaine, quinidine (also known as CARDIOQUIN, QUINIDEX, and others). MYCOBUTIN (rifabutin, an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis).

REYATAZ (atazanavir sulfate) BUPRENEX, SUBUTEX, SUBOXONE, (buprenorphine or buprenorphine/ naloxone, used to treat pain and addiction to narcotic painkillers). VASCOR (bepridil, used for chest pain). COUMADIN (warfarin). Tricyclic antidepressants such as ELAVIL (amitriptyline), NORPRAMIN (desipramine), SINEQUAN (doxepin), SURMONTIL (trimipramine), TOFRANIL (imipramine), or VIVACTIL (protriptyline). Medicines to prevent organ transplant rejection: SANDIMMUNE or NEORAL (cyclosporin), RAPAMUNE (sirolimus), or PROGRAF (tacrolimus). The antidepressant trazodone (DESYREL and others). Fluticasone propionate (FLONASE, FLOVENT), given by nose or inhaled to treat allergic symptoms or asthma. Your doctor may choose not to keep you on fluticasone, especially if you are also taking NORVIR. Colchicine (COLCRYS), used to prevent or treat gout or treat familial Mediterranean fever. The following medicines may require a change in the dose or dose schedule of either REYATAZ or the other medicine: INVIRASE (saquinavir). NORVIR (ritonavir). SUSTIVA (efavirenz). Antacids or buffered medicines. VIDEX (didanosine). VIREAD (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). MYCOBUTIN (rifabutin). Perry reiterates opposition to same-sex marriage

the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business. Perrys comments about the New York marriage bill drew an immediate outcry from anti-gay groups, including the Family Research Council. But in a subsequent interview with Family Research Council leader Tony Perkins, Perry noted that among his core beliefs is the view that marriage can only be between one man and one woman. While he remains a strong supporter of states rights, Perry told Perkins that the approval of same-sex marriage laws in states like New York could eventually lead to a situation where all states would have to recognize those marriages. Indeed to not pass the federal marriage amendment would impinge on Texas and other states not to have marriage forced upon us by these activist judges and special interest groups, he said. Rumors that have surfaced in Texas over the past decade about Perry having an affair with a male member of his administration, and his concern over the unconrmed reports, may explain why Perry hasnt been as outspoken against LGBT issues as the other GOP candidates in the race, according to Michael Mitchell, executive director of National Stonewall Democrats. The weekly Austin Chronicle, along with various state blogs, have reported on the rumors, some of which have questioned Perrys sexual orientation. Perrys supporters have called the rumors scurrilous, saying no evidence has ever surfaced to give them any credibility. Perry announced his candidacy on the same day that U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) won the Iowa straw poll among GOP presidential contenders, elevating her position in the eyes of most political pundits as one of the three top tier Republican presidential candidates based on polling numbers, fundraising capability and other factors. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who didnt compete in the Iowa straw poll, remains at the head of the pack of GOP presidential candidates, according to the pundits and polls. Perry is considered the other member of the top three. Romney and Bachman have each come out strongly for a federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Bachmann, whose husband operates a discredited ex-gay counseling practice, captured 29 percent of the nearly 17,000 votes cast in the Ames, Iowa, straw poll. Libertarian U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), came in second with 28 percent of the vote. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty came in third with 14 percent, prompting him to drop out of the presidential race. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum nished fourth with 10 percent, while businessman Herman Cain came in fth with 9 percent. Bachmann, Paul, Santorum, Cain, and

Pawlenty have each expressed opposition to same-sex marriage. Pawlenty came under re from conservative activists when he said he supported civil unions for same-sex couples. Dennis Coleman, executive director of the statewide LGBT group Equality Texas, said LGBT leaders in the state have yet to meet with Perry during his nearly 11 years as governor. Perry won election as lieutenant governor in 1998 and assumed ofce as governor in 2000 when then-Gov. George W. Bush resigned after winning election as president. Perry won election to full terms as governor in 2002, 2006, and 2010.

Coleman said Perry this year signed two bills considered to be benecial to the LGBT community, an anti-bullying measure and a suicide prevention measure. But Coleman noted that both bills enjoyed strong bipartisan support and did not include specic language mentioning LGBT people, even though the bills benet LGBT youth who are subjected to bullying and susceptible to suicide. According to Coleman and Mitchell, Perry has opposed nearly all LGBT-related bills introduced into the state legislature during his time as governor, including legislation to ban job discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Mitchell said Perry nevertheless has not been as outspoken in his opposition to LGBT-related issues as many of the other GOP presidential candidates, especially Bachmann and Santorum. Christian Berle, deputy executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, a national LGBT group, praised Perrys record in Texas on economic issues and his support for the anti-bullying and suicide prevention bills. We look forward to seeing Gov. Perry keep his commitment to states rights and the 10th Amendment when it comes to respecting the decisions of states to recognize relationships, Berle said.

Parties to debate LGBT issues as 2012 race heats up

vast majority of them talk about everything from the repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell, all the way up to and including marriage in some places. Certainly they vary state to state, given how strong LGBT people are organized in the Democratic Party there. Mitchell continued, So I have no doubt given the people who were involved in 2008 will continue to be involved now, the new crop of people we have coming in. The work that were doing at National Stonewall or rather that we will be doing, as we havent started working in earnest on a platform Im sure that the platform will be very good if not great on LGBT issues. Mitchell sees opportunities to address new LGBT issues in the platform, as several of the 2008 planks have been achieved, including passage of a federal hate crimes law and repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell. Our issues have shifted since 2008, so obviously we had the repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell and thats great but there are other issues around that implementation that we have to start digging into, Mitchell continued. I think its certainly better than what the other party is up to. The 2008 Republican Party platform denounced same-sex marriage, as well as non-discrimination statutes barring bias on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in areas like employment, public accommodations and adoption. Some moderate Republicans hope that the party will soften its anti-gay rhetoric next year, as public opinion on LGBT issues has shifted. The DNCs 2008 platform included a call to repeal Dont Ask, Dont Tell, increase funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and care, pass the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act and assure that federal funds would not be used to proselytize or discriminate in faithbased programs. The language also explicitly promised to ght discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and alluded to support for nondiscrimination laws in employment. Most strikingly, the platform stated, We support the full inclusion of all families, including same-sex couples, in the life of our nation, and support equal responsibility, benets, and protections. We will enact a comprehensive bipartisan employment non-discrimination act. We oppose the Defense of Marriage Act and all attempts to use this issue to divide us. But some LGBT Democrats are looking for more in 2012. Richard Socarides, president of Equality Matters and a former adviser to President Bill Clinton, wants to see the Democratic Party take a bold stance on issues dear to the LGBT community, including marriage equality. I feel its important for the Democratic Party to have a strong pro-LGBT platform, he said. The platform is very important. It reects what we stand for. The 2008 platform is not going to be good enough for 2012.

As we watch the Republican eld develop, it seems the GOP platform will be a total disaster, Socarides said, referring to the 2012 eld of GOP presidential candidates. Members of both parties, however, see 2012 as an opportunity to make headway. Log Cabin Republicans plan to actively participate in the process to revise the partys platform, said Christian Berle, deputy executive director of Log Cabin Republicans. We recognize there will be a lot of work to be done to strengthen the importance of reaching out to LGBT Americans as a part of strengthening the party, Log Cabins chairman emeritus, Bob Kabel, sits on the Republican National Committee, Berle noted. Kabel Log Cabins rst national chairman is the only openly gay member of the RNC, and the rst openly gay chairman of a state-level Republican Committee, as the chairman of the District of Columbia Republican Committee. Log Cabin Republicans have long had delegates of ours to the conventions and will work with other organizations to help us recruit more openly gay candidates, Berle said. Mitchell hopes to bring leaders from across the LGBT community directly to the DNC to communicate goals and ideas to the decision makers. I would hope that we are the point organization for other LGBT organizations who are looking to get included in the platform and that we can help guide people to the right folks. Thats the role I really see us as playing. Though both parties have a long wait to decide their platforms, Michael Czin, a regional press secretary at the Democratic National Committee, said that as soon as the state parties are ready, the process will begin moving forward. The process to draft the 2012 platform

hasnt started yet, but next year there will be a robust and inclusive process within the Democratic Party to draft the 2012 platform, Czin told the Blade. The process, just like in previous years will be representative of the many voices that comprise the Democratic Party. The platform is forged by the Platform Committee, a diverse group that consists of party delegates from all over the country, representing many constituency groups within the party. Mitchell said that Stonewall would be able to wield some inuence over the process of crafting the platform, especially if prominent LGBT Democrats are involved at high levels during its creation. [Stonewall Democrats] have close relationships with the folks who I expect will end up being players, Mitchell said. The folks who were all involved the last time around. We have a lot of those relationships already existing, and Im sure well be building relationships to gure out the best way to make the platform as LGBT inclusive as possible for both the LGBT community and our families. Berle sees a trend of Republican candidates taking less hard-right stances on LGBT issues. I think the candidacy of Gov. Jon Huntsman opens a great number of doors for LGBT Republicans to get behind a candidate, Berle told the Blade. He has the same position on marriage equality that the president does with his support for civil unions, that is striking a tenor with a wide array of gay and lesbian Americans, not only Republicans but Democrats and independents as well. You have an openly gay candidate in Fred Karger and you have Gov. Gary Johnson and Rep. Ron Paul, whose libertarian positions line up with the views of many LGBT Americans.

But not everyone sees platform language as relevant to the race, as candidates dont always tow the party line. Party platforms are interesting creatures these days, said Dana Beyer, executive director of Gender Rights Maryland. Theres a real dichotomy in my mind. I cant remember the last time I cared, as a voter, what the platform actually said. Maybe the early 70s, but it was so long ago I dont recall. She continued, However, as an activist, and a Democratic candidate, Im very aware that the platform speaks volumes about the partys values and priorities. And while it is still a long haul from the enunciation of those values in a platform to their integration into the life of the partys members, and particularly its leaders, you must start somewhere, and that somewhere is the party platform. Chris Barron, board chair of GOProud, played down the importance of platform language. Political party platforms are not worth the paper that theyre printed on, said Barron. No one in the country reads them, nor should anyone in the country read them. They have absolutely no impact whatsoever. What I care about? I care about the policies that the nominee of each party is going to put forward. Thats what [GOProud will] be focused on. Log Cabins Berle agrees the presidential nominee holds more sway than the platform committee in the end. In terms of the platform and the convention itself it will be driven largely through whoever is the Republican nominee, so there are a varying number of candidates who would have different positions in regard to redressing those issues, Berle said.

Lesbian couples uninformed about D.C. parentage law

American University law professor Nancy Polikoff, a nationally recognized expert on LGBT related family law, has issued an alert to lesbian couples in D.C. getting married isnt the best way to guarantee your rights as parents of children conceived through articial insemination. Polikoff said the enactment of D.C.s same-sex marriage law last year has overshadowed another sweeping law the city enacted in 2009 that provides samesex couples with all of the parental rights that heterosexual couples have through a legal status separate from marriage. Among other things, the law confers the status of legal parent on both lesbian mothers who plan a child using donor insemination, Polikoff said in a blog posting at the time the law was passed. She said the law gives full parental rights to the partner of the couple who doesnt give birth to the child as long as both partners sign an ofcial Consent to Parent form. Polikoff said that lesbian couples who marry in D.C. and other states also are given equal parental rights to a child conceived through articial insemination. But she said that the parental right of the partner who doesnt bear the child could be disputed or rejected by other states that dont recognize same-sex marriage. A signed Consent to Parent form linked to the citys sweeping parentage law provides much stronger legal protection of the parental rights of a lesbian couple in other states, said Polikoff. Yet many lesbian couples apparently are unaware of this form, which the city requires all hospitals to make available to female same-sex partners at the time one of the partners gives birth, Polikoff said. She noted that the form also clears the way for the names of both partners to appear on the birth certicate. We have to educate lesbians giving birth in D.C. about this form, Polikoff told the Blade. It has nothing to do with marriage. The couple doesnt need to be married. Plus getting your name on the birth certicate because of signing this form will be more protection in other states than getting on the birth certicate through marriage, she said.

Likewise, they want their children to attend school in a secure, welcoming environment. At Barrie School, an independent school entering its 80th year of educating Washington-area children, the teachers and staff work to ensure that children attend school in an accepting and diverse learning environment. Charlie Abelmann, Head of School, writes: We want children and adults in our community to grow and foster self awareness of bias, and to learn to recognize and challenge prejudice as advocates for justice. The veteran educators on Barries faculty are singularly dedicated to teaching each of their students, from age 2 to grade 12, a common theme: respect for self, others and the environment. Through Barries Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, the master teachers also prepare future educators to create vibrant, safe classroom settings. More than a mere motto, respect for self, others and the environment is a way of life at Barrie. The teachers are responsible for fostering a nurturing environment, but even the youngest of the children learn the importance of treating their fellow students with respect. Likewise, students in Barries Middle and Upper School regularly perform in student-led productions such as the annual SLAMSATION poetry slam, where they explore themes of identity and work to find their own voice. The overwhelming popularity and success of these events relies on the encouraging space the students and faculty create together. Kenna Armstrong, Head of Barries Lower School, knows well the importance of providing a safe, nurturing environment in which children can be encouraged to grow and learn. Through Barries Montessori program, our master teachers strive to present children with a deep experience conducive to learning, both in the classroom and on our 45 acre campus. We work to make sure each child feels welcome, and responsible for maintaining that respectful environment. Kenna continues: Our low adult to child ratio affords students a greater degree of personal attention than they can get at most schools. The multiple-year environment, which places students in a classroom for two or three years with the same teacher, allows students to form a deep, caring bond with teachers - and vice versa. Children get the chance to respectfully interact with each other on different levels: as learners, as peers, and as leaders. Many parents, whether their children attend public or independent schools, are concerned about bullying, and understandably eager to learn how schools work to prevent it. Like many experienced educators, Abelmann takes a proactive view on promoting a respectful, accepting school environment. It really does come down to respect, he explains. Students who learn at an early age the value and importance of respecting others for who they are, and celebrate each others diversity both in a school setting and at home, naturally develop the peer-to-peer relationships and sense of community that make a universal, unconditional acceptance less of a goal, and more of a starting point. We are willing to have the hard conversations with students to examine conflict, develop understanding, and solve problems. In that atmosphere, where disrespectful behavior isnt tolerated by teachers or by students, bullying becomes a non-issue. One of the goals of the project, the RFP says, is strengthening the capacity of grassroots LGBT organizations to register in Cuba as recognized non-governmental organizations. The document says the State Department has designated approximately $300,000 to fund the project. State Department spokesperson Evan Owen said that as of late last week a contractor had not been selected to carry out the project. Gay Episcopalian activist Charles Briody of D.C., who recently visited Cuba as part of a group called Pastors for Peace, said hes troubled that the Obama administration hasnt pushed harder to end the U.S. economic boycott of Cuba. Briody said he has experienced rsthand Cubas evolving attitudes on LGBT equality when family members of his Cuban boyfriend helped organize a commitment ceremony for the couple in his boyfriends hometown outside Havana. It was really wonderful, he said. Everybody was there, including the kids. It was recognition of our relationship for what it is. Briody, however, declined to disclose his partner Samuels last name, saying he was worried about possible consequences for Samuel from the U.S. government, not the Cuban government. I hope to bring him to Washington so we can get married, he said, adding that hes worried that U.S. immigration or visa restrictions could prevent Samuel from entering the country. Briody said that upon his retirement as a schoolteacher in Maryland in the near future he hopes to live part of each year in Cuba with Samuel. He said that during his recent visit to Cuba, he attended a brieng that a CENESEX ofcial held for about 100 members of the Pastors for Peace contingent. According to Briody, the ofcial said the Cuban National Assembly was considering a proposed law that would ban workplace discrimination in Cuba based on a persons sexual orientation or gender identity. My rst thought was, wow, Cuba might beat the United States in passing a national law protecting LGBT people from employment discrimination, he said. Repeated attempts to reach a Cuban government spokesperson for comment through the Cuban Interest Section ofce in Washington or through the Cuban Mission at the United Nations in New York were unsuccessful. The phones at both ofces were not answered. A staff member with the Swiss Embassy in Washington, which facilitates the Cuban interest section, said she receives frequent reports by callers who cant reach anyone at the interest section.

Growing rift between Lanier, LGBT community

Police chief, mayor must fully staff Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit
at MPD headquarters with the chief. In exchange for her saying it was a rookie mistake, the community issued a statement of continued support for her. It seems possible though I hope In the interim there has been a documented rise in hate crimes in the District with an overwhelming impact on the LGBT community, ranging from name calling, robbery and assault, to murder.

Although the chiefs concept of a GLLU spread out across the District is a nice idea conceptually, the MPD isnt ready to effectively implement that.

I continue to have a good relationship and like Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier on a personal level, but there is a growing rift between Lanier and the LGBT community. This is in stark contrast to the communitys strong relationship with former Chief Ramsey. The relationship with Lanier was good after her appointment but has since gone steadily downhill. In December 2006 Mayor-elect Fenty named Lanier as his police chief. She quickly held a small but important getting-to-know-you meeting with a diverse group representing the LGBT community arranged by Lt. Brett Parson, then head of the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU). This award-winning unit was the pride and joy of our community and an example Chief Ramsey often used when talking about good community policing. Chief Lanier spoke highly of the unit and committed to keeping it at full strength, a campaign promise made by candidate Fenty. Barely four months later there were rumblings about her lack of support for the unit and liaison units as a whole. In May 2007 Lanier issued a statement that she was going to begin changing, and in essence dismantling, the units. There was an outcry from the LGBT and the Latino communities and opposition to the changes from the D.C. Council forced the chief to back down. There was a stormy meeting

not the case that Chief Laniers moves against the liaison units since that time, and her lack of communication, have been partly a response to the community having called her out on the issue and winning. In October 2009, the chief again announced a broad change in the GLLU structure without any consultation with the community. She claimed it had been in the works for a year. Unfortunately by then, Mayor Fenty had also abandoned his pledge to the community. The chief announced there would be trained members of the GLLU in every precinct who understood and could deal with the issues impacting the LGBT community. The community responded and correctly stated that there had been no training and was then grudgingly allowed minimal input into the proposed training modules. By that time, the core unit of the GLLU was understaffed, without resources to respond to the community, and without a sergeant. Since then there have been continued battles with the chief over the structure of the unit and Lanier has continued to make changes without consulting the community, resulting in a clear diminishment of service to the community. Training of the new ofcers who are nominally part of the unit has been sporadic and until recently the community never received an accurate list of who these ofcers were.

There has been a Council resolution on hate crimes and two hearings held by Council member Phil Mendelson. At both those hearings, Chief Lanier has either downplayed the issue or told outright untruths about hate crime reporting. Recently, Lanier made another change to the leadership of the liaison units and now they report to a civilian in the department. She made no effort to discuss this and its possible impact with any community and didnt bother to inform the mayor who conrmed this at a town hall meeting with the LGBT community in June. The recent attack on ve lesbians in Columbia Heights and the fact that the ofcers responding let a perpetrator go and didnt le a report on the incident highlight what the community has been saying for years. Although the chiefs concept of a GLLU spread out across the District is a nice idea conceptually, the MPD isnt ready to effectively implement that. The community needs and demands a fully staffed and functioning core GLLU. I understand and applaud the overall success that the MPD has had in ghting crime. But in our community hate crimes are a major issue and they getting worse. The chief and the mayor, who as a candidate made a commitment to fully staff the GLLU, must work this out and abide by that commitment. Nothing less than our lives are at stake.

Its no secret that cigarettes are extremely dangerous to your health. Cigarette smoking takes the lives of more than 400,000 Americans each year and, according to a report from the American Lung Association, the lives of more than 700 District residents. Menthol cigarettes are just as cancer-inducing as regular cigarettes and because of the avoring, even more palatable for young smokers who quickly become addicted. Among African Americans, whose smoking rates are high, menthols are disproportionately the cigarette of choice.

The Districts LGBT community, too, should be alarmed by the widespread availability of menthol cigarettes. LGBT people smoke at 50 percent or more the rate of the general population. Our youth are exceptionally vulnerable: studies have shown LGBT youth to smoke at 2.5 to 9.7 times the rate of straight youth. Access to menthol cigarettes increases their chances of becoming smokers. In 2009, the FDA instituted a ban on cigarettes containing avors, herbs and spices. Farewell to vanilla, cinnamon, licorice, cloves and many other avors that are proven to be enticing to youth. Why should cool mint menthol be treated any differently?

In 2011, the federal Food and Drug Administrations tobacco advisory committee concluded, Removal of menthol cigarettes from the marketplace would benet public health in the United States. Hip-hop stars cat and mouse game continues

If you are anxious for down-to-earth Jersey girl Dana Owens (a.k.a. hip-hops Queen Latifah) to come out, dont hold your breath. If, however, youve derived pleasure from Queen Latifahs unintended Gotcha! moments of being outed and there are many so, too, have the media. But the medias cat and mouse game with the Queen leads us to another Gotcha! moment thats not. In the upcoming September 2011 issue of Sister 2 Sister (S2S) magazine, which features Latifah on the cover, the Queen, in an in-depth interview with its publisher Jamie Foster Brown, discussed everything from her days touring with fellow rap artists and her brothers untimely death to the beef between hip-hop and R&B recording artists Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim. In the interview, Queen Latifah also revealed to S2S the type of women she likes: Queen Latifah: I just like ladies who have class. Period. And if its T and A youre sellin, thats ne, as long as thats what youre selling. But you dont have to show everything, you know? You can hold some back and just be yourself and let your personality shine and let your individuality show. To me, thats sexier. A condent woman is a sexy woman, in my opinion. And I think guys nd that to be the same way. Jamie Foster Brown: Right. Queen Latifah: You dont have to show everything; you dont have to put it all out there to attract a guy. Because what kind of guy are you gonna attract? What is he really looking for? If you wanna be a booty call, I guess you can throw it all out there. (laughs) But if youre looking for a relationship with someone who respects you and respects things other than your body your mind, your spirit, your personality, your smile then you have to kind of exude that more so than just yo booty and yo titties. The blogosphere ran with plucked quotes from Latifahs interview, and news of her coming out proliferated blogs and respected news outlets like ABC. com, all heralding that the Queen is out. This is signicant because (A) Queen Latifah is amazing, and ladies should have some info on what reels her in and (B) because shes never discussed her sexuality before. After years of dodging questions, especially since the speculation about the split between her and longtime girlfriend Jeanette Jenkins, props to Queen Latifah for opening up about her love for ladies. Its not that I think a celebritys sexuality is any of our business. Its just that the choice to be open about it as a human being is a powerful one. Queen Latifah is a role model for many women. I believe her decision to come out will only continue to inspire them, wrote Ami Angelowicz at The Frisky blog. While there is a willingness of both the media and the public to believe that Latifah came out to S2S, these quotes are taken wildly out of context. And these quotes, understandably, can be taken out of context, because there is solid evidence of Latifahs sexual orientation. For example, long before this latest hubbub, the black celebrity gossip blog Bossip.com outed Latifah in September 2010 with photos of Latifah and gal pal and personal trainer Jeanette Jenkins in a tender embrace that was not intended for public viewing. The reliable chitlin circuit told us our closeted Queen was in the life. But when photos of Queen Latifah and Jenkins intimately embracing aboard a private yacht in France went viral on the Internet, the publics long-awaited Gotcha moment was revealed. For years it has been rumored that Queen Latifah has held private same-sex parties with all in attendance understanding they had to be on the down-low about it. That intimate and tender embrace Queen Latifah shared with her long-time friend/ trainer/ lover? aboard the yacht in France was supposed to be on the down-low, too. Part of what fuels the on-going urry of queries concerning Queen Latifahs sexual orientation was her spot-on portrayal of a butch lesbian in the 1996 movie Set it Off. Earlier this summer, Latifahs character on the show Single Ladies, which she produces, was accidentally outed, and worked out in a positive way for the character. Viewers and the blogosphere began to speculate that Latifah was channeling her personal life through her small-screen character. But Latifah would never publicly out herself. In a November 2007 interview with People magazine, denying rumors that shes a lesbian, Latifah said, My private life is my private life. Whomever I might be with, I dont feel the need to share it. I dont think I ever will.

Creating safer schools

D.C. plans to expand GSAs as students prepare for return to classes

Administrators within the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) are at the beginning of a long-term initiative to bring about more awareness and acceptance of the LGBT community in area schools. Through the intended growth of GayStraight Alliances (GSAs) across the school system, the visibility of LGBT students, families and teachers is expected to grow. Coming out of the 2010 school year one tainted by the tragedy of teen suicides as a result of bullying across the country DCPS administrators felt an increasing need for a formal LGBT outreach program. In 1998, the Gay-Straight Alliance Network was created to help empower students to unite and ght homophobia in schools. By 2005, the National Association of GSA Networks was formed, with the mission of uniting statewide organizations supporting GSAs and accelerating the growth of the movement nationwide. D.C.-based SMYAL is a member of the association. Carolyn Laub, founder and executive director of the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, sees tremendous growth in the movement over the past two or three years. Year after year theres just this incredible growth of the GSA movement, nationwide. That growth of the GSA movement is being supported by, fueled by, local and statewide organizations that are supporting the GSA clubs in their region, she says. Despite the growth, there are still some great cultural shifts that need to be made in some states for GSAs to take root.

Depending on what part of the country you are in, there are obstacles that might range from lack of administration support or teacher support in places where there is not employment protection for teachers, Laub says. Teachers will be reluctant to become a GSA adviser because they are worried about their own job security. Thats the case in places like Alabama. Teachers are reluctant to stick their necks out and become a GSA adviser. DCPS hopes to set an example for how a formal plan within a school system can bring about positive change. With only ve or six out of 20 high schools in the District having formal GSAs in place, DCPS staff feels the time is right to expand. In the news last year there was a lot of information about kids committing suicide and we just felt that something needed to be done. The moment was now, says Diana Bruce, director of health and wellness for DCPS. The DCPS looks to combat that fear and isolation in its schools through a publicity campaign. Over the past few months, DCPS has been meeting and consulting regularly with parents, social workers, teachers, openly gay students as well as organizations like SMYAL and The Trevor Project. These individuals and groups formed a steering committee to put together a road map for how the District can be more proactive in putting an end to bullying and bringing about more awareness of the presence of LGBT students. What they have come up with is being referred to as The LGBTQ Plan. The plan targets three groups: LGBT students, family and staff. DCPS staff met with each and conducted listening sessions. Not all of our schools are where we want them to be when it comes to welcoming and including LGBTQ students. Additionally, we

Long-time D.C. resident Michael Sainte-Andress has had almost as varied a life and career as you could imagine. The 61-year-old Houston native, known as Micci (pronounced Mickey) to his friends, had a penchant for performing early on. He studied dance and acting in high school in college, taught school for a year, then went into the Navy, which he says is one of the best decisions he ever made. All my commanding ofcers knew I was gay but they also recognized that I was smart and had leadership potential, he says. He continued to be out in most of his jobs. He mostly got away with it though he did get red from a phone company for having his then-boyfriends photo on his desk. I was always kind of aming and refused to tone it down, he says. Of course we werent quite that enlightened back in those days either. He enjoyed several years in what he says was then a thriving D.C. black theater scene and worked fairly constantly. He says he was a popular party guest, became known as a colorful character in D.C. and was known for his impersonation of Bette Davis singing The 12 Days of Christmas. By the 80s, he was working as a claims adjuster for national phone companies. He tested positive for HIV in the summer of 86 and after a long period of denial, depression and alcohol abuse, it ended up being a motivator of sorts. His friend Phil Pannell persuaded him to get involved with AIDS activism and thus began a lengthy period of work with the Inner City AIDS Network, the Max Robinson Center, Whitman-Walker, the Ryan White Council, the D.C. Health Consortium and many others. Believe it or not, AIDS has come to be the least of my health worries, he says. Ive been dealing with this for 25 years, I know how to handle it. Diabetes has been a much more serious thing for me in the last several years. I still face challenges, he says. Why should I have any less of a challenge than anybody else? You either accept that challenge or you let it destroy you. Thats my decision and I tell you, Ill be the last bitch standing honey.

2nd Sundance 5k planned for Aug. 28

Camp Rehoboth and the Seashore Striders will hold the second annual Sundance 5k: Run, Walk or Sashay! on Aug. 28 in Rehoboth Beach, Del., to kick-off Sundance Week, a Labor Day weekend benet. According to Chris Beagle, the races organizer, last years race brought about 210 runners and hes hoping for 300 this year. Registration begins at 6 a.m. on race day and the 5k kicks off at 7:30 a.m. The course, considered an out-and-back due to it starting and nishing at the same point, begins in front of the Camp Rehoboth Community Center at 37 Baltimore Ave. in downtown Rehoboth Beach. The course continues through town, crossing Lake Gerar, and heads north toward Cape Henlopen State Park. Just prior to the park entrance, runners will turn around and follow the same route back to Camp Rehoboth. Were having a local drag queen lead the race on a scooter, Beagle says. The top three overall male and female nishers will be awarded prizes as well as the top three male and female nishers in 15 age groups ranging from 9 and under to 70 and older. Prizes will also be presented to the top three walkers over all. Performance T-shirts will be provided to the rst 300 registered runners. Last year, the shirts were red and this year theyll be orange. According to Beagle, they hope to continue with the rest of the colors of the rainbow at future runs. There will also be a 1-mile fun walk where creativity and costumes are encouraged and prizes will be awarded in several categories. Taking place at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center (229 Rehoboth Ave.) Saturday and Sunday night of Labor Day weekend, Sundance started when the 10th anniversary party of Steven Elkins and Murray Archibald was rained out in 1988. Saturday, Sept. 3 is the Sundance Auction, both silent and live from 7 to 10 p.m. and will include food and an open bar. Sunday, Sept. 4 is the Sundance. The party begins at 8 p.m. with dancing until 2 a.m. There will also be an open bar all night. Sundance benets and a percentage of the race proceeds will go to support the Camp Rehoboth Community Center. Hawthorne prepping for Baltimore Fashion Week

As the rainclouds began to overtake the sunny skies on a hot summer day, Washington-based fashion designer Philip Hawthorne expressed both anxiety and excitement over his upcoming presentation at the 2011 Baltimore Fashion Week. Ive been so busy getting ready for the show for the last couple of months, says the designer who describes himself as a man of many talents when it comes to the arts. But Im ready for it. On Sunday, Hawthorne, who is gay, will be among several fashion designers to show off his latest collection to the fashion press, buyers and the general public at Baltimore Fashion Week taking place Aug. 18-21 at Harbor East. This years theme is the Mystique of Fashion, and will include international designers from Ireland and France. The path to Baltimore Fashion Week has been in the works for many years for the designer. I have been designing since I was 5 years old, I basically grew up around fashion, Hawthorne says. His mother, Carolyn, has been a dressmaker and seamstress for more than 40 years and he recalls sitting under her sewing machine for hours, watching her make at the time what I thought was magic. Hawthorne, armed with a strong emerging talent, would nd himself consulting his moms clients on the outcome of their outts. I would sketch out something and they would love it. In high school, he majored in drawing and black and white photography and is now in his second year at the Art Institute of Washington majoring in fashion and retail management. Effortless, classic and elegant is how Hawthorne describes his current collection and personal style, whether hes wearing jeans and a deep v-neck or a nice pair of slacks with a vest or a sweater. Relaxed t jeans and slim/straight leg pants for men and the Grecian couture look for women, are what he prefers. On a rooftop overlooking the city, he shared a preview of his collection. I love vintage and period pieces, he says. So when you see my dresses you can see a modern version of something that may have been worn in the 20s and 30s. In fact, his collection seems to borrow from the power suit that Yves Saint Laurent feminized in the 1970s, which was inspired by the fashion icon Katharine Hepburn during the 30s and 40s. Hawthorne wants to bring a modern twist to that. Not only is he debuting a 20-piece collection that ranges from sportswear and high fashion, he will debut as a menswear designer all in one show. That is a feat that can be very stressful for any designer at any level. Very few top designers such as Marc Jacobs or Rick Owens show their mens and womens collections all in one show. Its a great challenge, says the Baltimore native.

Gay singer asks ex why? on WTF

L.A.-based Broadway vet Zarley releases new EP Tuesday

Singer Matt Zarley opted for the no ller approach when crafting his new EP, Change Begins With Me. The project, which drops Tuesday and is anchored with debut single WTF, is the gay Broadway vets third collection, though a slew of remix maxis are also available on iTunes. He says the state of the industry inuenced his work with producers Mark Picchiotti and Andy Zulla for the indie release. The trend is more with EPs and really having an EP full of singles, he says on the drive home to West Hollywood from his chiropractors ofce (he threw his back out just before the early August interview). People can download individual tracks now, so its less important to do a whole album of songs. Theres no need for album ller anymore because if you do that now, people just wont download those songs. Each individual track needs to be single worthy. The project, also available in a sleek black gatefold CD digipak, has eight originals and two bonus remixes of WTF, one cleaned up for radio. It just felt cohesive to me this way, he says. We could have done two more songs but its kind of a waste of time and money unless you really have singleworthy cuts. Zarley, whos seen a few of his singles garner some attention on Billboards dance chart, has earned both raves and rejection. A blog review of his cabaret act last year found one writer praising his magnicent vocal instrument. But comments to an interview and link to the playful, tonguein-cheek WTF video (search it on YouTube) called the single typical cookie cutter, autotuned, dance pop you hear whenever you walk into any gay bar. Zarley, 42, grew up mostly in Californias Orange County and started his career at 12 dancing with Tony the Tiger for a Frosted Flakes commercial. He made his Broadway debut while still a teen in A Chorus Line and later did Cats, Kiss of the Spider Woman and Chicago. He eventually graduated to starring roles in stalwarts like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Whos Tommy, both on Broadway. He moved to New York at 17 and lived on the Upper West Side and Chelsea, then later in Brooklyn. Hes been back to L.A. for the last six years having tired of the New York stage scene. Doing theater in New York is interesting, he says. I kind of managed to sustain myself from show to show but it became sort of lateral moves all the time. There are very few who climb up the ladder in theater because the amount of opportunity versus the amount of people vying for the jobs is erce. It got to a point where Id done some great stuff in New York and I wanted to record and explore that direction more so I followed my heart and came back to L.A. Any regrets? There is a part of me that wonders what might have happened if Id stayed, he says. Zarley calls his music a little Bruno Marsish with some Maroon 5 and Babyface inuence. The songs, all of which he cowrote, trace what he calls a really tough break up thats addressed through tracks like Forgive Me (For Not Forgiving You), Apology and Ill Always Remember. Perfect is the second single and a video is planned. The album closes with the grandiose inspirational title cut that features a gospel choir. It was really putting things together and guring out what happened, Zarley says. With the exception of WTF, which was a whole other thing, the rest was pretty much that experience and my emotions.

Signature launches season with rotating musicals

Signature Theatre (4200 Campbell Ave.) in Arlington, is opening its 22nd season on Tuesday with two world premiere musicals, The Hollow and The Boy Detective Fails, part of the American Musical Voices Project Repertory Series, making what is believed to be theatrical history by running full productions in rotating repertory. The Hollow is a musical reinterpretation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow telling the story of an 18th century village and how rumors of a headless horseman are blamed on a stranger spreading new ideas. The Boy Detective is based on Joe Menos novel, telling the story of Billy Argo as he faces the mystery of the death of his young sister and crime-solving partner, Caroline. Conscious: one persons HIV story

Conscious, a popular HIV/AIDS activist and public speaker is bringing her one-woman show, Getting Unstuck: Homeless to Hollywood (H2H), An American Dream, to D.C. TheArc Theatre (1901 Mississippi Ave., S.E.) on Saturday at 6 p.m. Getting Unstuck features Conscious, who says sexual orientation is hard to label, telling her story of how she contracted the HIV virus 18 years ago, how she found out, how she reacted when told and how she forgave the person who infected her. It also touches on her recovery from sexual abuse, sexuality and success after tragedy. Conscious is the CEO of the Getting Unstuck Project, Inc., an organization dedicated to providing educational materials through plays, speeches and lms. She has also served as music manager for The Queen Latifah Show and has been producing and hosting the talk show She-Commerce on Oxygen. The show is produced by Consciouss brother, Troy Carter, who also works with Lady Gaga. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at igotunstuck.org.

Gay splash party at Six Flags

Six Flags America is hosting its rst splash party for the LGBT community today at Hurricane Harbor (13710 Central Ave.) in Bowie from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Attendees will have exclusive access to the water park, featuring wave pools, water slides and more. Zombie-themed Md. event joins undead craze with exercise

Earlier this year radio evangelist Harold Camping predicted that on May 21, three percent of the population would ascend to heaven and the rest of us would die a horrible death. Now he states that we have been given a ve-month reprieve and the new date of destruction is Oct. 21. So what will you be doing on Oct. 22? I have a full day planned and at some point in the afternoon, I will be running through the woods with zombies in hot pursuit of my warm esh. Just a typical postapocalyptic Saturday afternoon. One of the things you learn from being an athlete is to set goals for yourself. Whenever I accomplish a sports goal, I immediately begin thinking about the next one. Last summer after a successful romp in Germany at the Gay Games with fellow athletes from Team D.C., I went online and signed up to compete in the Warrior Dash in Southern Pennsylvania. Having the next goal in place gives me the motivation I need to stay in the gym and give my workouts some purpose. The Warrior Dash is a 3.5-mile obstacle course through the woods involving mud, re, ropes, water and an assortment of other obstacles. Last year the Warrior Dash exploded all over the United States and, as is typical of a nationwide phenomenon, copycats also started popping up. After completing the Warrior Dash, on that warm October day, I rushed home to transform myself into a zombie. With Halloween approaching, that nights activities involved a zombie pub crawl in the streets of Baltimore. About 60 of us dressed as zombies staggered from bar to bar and even invaded the meat department at Safeway. For me, it was a perfect day. Around the same time, I discovered the AMC television series The Walking Dead. Its about a group of people who survive a zombie apocalypse and their subsequent ght to stay alive amidst the constant threat of tireless zombies. On the heart pumping suspense scale, the show rates a 10. Several years ago there was a reemergence of the vampire genre. They started showing up everywhere in lms, television and novels. I found myself amused but not quite as excited about it as everyone else. I never made it through an entire Twilight movie and I have only seen a few episodes of True Blood. Unlike the vampires, the zombies revival has totally captured of my attention. The Walking Dead series ended in November and I wondered how I would fulll my zombie lust until the series started back up in 11 months. Thankfully, several of my co-workers were also hooked on the series, so all of our water cooler moments for the next several months were riddled with zombie talk. Even Brad Pitt has jumped on the bandwagon hes currently lming World War Z based on the novel by Max Brooks. In May, I competed in another Warrior Dash in Mechanicsville, Md. As we were walking out, covered from head to toe in mud, I was already wondering what event I was going to train for next. Someone handed me a yer. Some genius had thought to combine zombies with a sporting event. I had died and gone to zombie heaven. On Oct. 22, an event called Run for Your Lives will be contested in Darlington, Md. The competitors, wearing ag football belts, will navigate 12 obstacles throughout a 5K course in an attempt to make it to the nish line while avoiding zombies. Youre not just running against the clock, youre running from brainhungry, virus-spreading, bloody zombies. If the zombies grab all of your ags before the nish line, you are considered transformed. Economy, high gas prices push more buyers into mid-size market

Mid-priced used to mean middle-ofthe-road. But not anymore. Roller-coaster gas prices and a sluggish economy have pushed more car buyers into what was already the most competitive car market: midsized, mid-priced sedans. In response, some automakers such as Hyundai are upping the size of their budget-savvy compacts and blurring the line of what is and isnt a midsizer. Others, such as VW, are taking their midsize lineups and stripping them down to lessexpensive, barebones models. Yet despite cuts in horsepower and features, many of these typically bland sedans are getting makeovers that would make Lady Gaga blush. The result: dozens of midsize choices with mod, cuttingedge designs. To help you choose, here are three of the best.

Inniti G25 $32,000 Mpg: 20 city/29 highway 0-to-60 mph: 8 seconds Cargo space: 13.5 cu. ft. For Inniti, less is denitely more. The automaker is adding an all-new G25 model, built on the same platform as the popular G37 sport sedan. While this new addition gets a smaller V6, it also gets decent gas mileage and costs less. Thats a big plus, since a fully loaded G37 can top $45,000. And despite spitting out only 218hp, the G25 proves its ne for everyday driving and can emulate the G37s taut ride and suspension. Choice of two trim levels: a stripped-down base model or the Journey, with the same primo features as a standard G37 (heated seats/mirrors, dualzone automatic climate control, backup camera and iPod/ISB interface).

Thats a far cry from 1992, when VW sales in America basically tanked. But VW is employing the same strategy as Inniti, offering vehicles with reduced content, power and pricing. With the larger, completely redesigned Passat, this means offering a dozen versions from an underperforming base model to the clean turbo diesel to a zippy V6 Premium. All boast good mileage, as well as more cabin and cargo room than before. Exterior styling is, well, rather boring at least compared with the hipper Hyundai and Inniti noted above. heard that our staff wants more support around being able to be out, being able to have a picture of their spouse or partner on their desk. Some of our family members who identify as LGBTQ also said that they sometimes felt invisible, Bruce says. A key instrument in fullling the needs of the three groups is the idea of growing and enriching the role of GSAs in the public school system. The DCPS is essentially making a public statement regarding policies of tolerance and acceptance within schools surrounding the LGBT community. One way that we can support schools and staff who want to become advisers for GSAs is for DCPS centrally to communicate our values publicly, Bruce says. Its making small but signicant steps. In June, the school system made its rst appearance in the Capital Pride parade. And a new Facebook page (facebook. com/dcpslgbtq) has been established. So far, fewer than 100 have liked the page, but theyre just starting to get the word out about its existence.

DCPS intends to use the Facebook page to get information out to interested parties. Individuals will be able to nd out what schools have GSAs and their upcoming events and programming. While DCPS staff maintains control of the site and prohibits individuals from writing on the pages wall, they intend to regularly share photos and feedback/suggestions for programming through it. In the long term, DCPS hopes to develop a private Facebook group for GSAs and SMYAL ofcials to share information among leaders and school administrators. There are other plans that will be implemented pending funding such as a possible pilot program with 20 schools to study GSA benets, updating all familyrelated teaching materials to include LGBT representation and having Trevor Project suicide-prevention material and training in place. Andrew Barnett, executive director of SMYAL, praised the efforts. The Ofce of Youth Engagement at DCPS is showing great leadership in their work to make the system safer and more afrming for its LGBTQ students and other

constituents, and SMYAL has appreciated being a part of the effort, he says. Weve also been very impressed by the way in which Diana Bruce and her team have engaged so many different important stakeholders throughout the process. This critical work addresses one of our core responsibilities as a community: to provide a supportive path to adulthood for all of our young people. We look forward to seeing LGBTQ students have more opportunities to learn and thrive within DCPS as a result of this initiative. Louis Josey, 18, graduated last year from D.C.s Maya Angelou Public Charter School. Josey remembers always being comfortable with his sexuality and came out to his family at 12. Even though he was pretty comfortable with being gay, Josey, who plans to enlist in the Navy, believes a GSA would have helped. Theres always a need for some structure, he says. Even though we [other fellow LGBT students] were working together, it took us to talk to every single teacher and every person on staff to gure out what was necessary in order to get our voices heard. If we would have had some structured group

or organization there specically focused on incorporating everyone into the community then I think it would have been a whole lot easier, it would been a whole lot more participants, and it would have just been easier for us to acclimate into the school. Though the plans success is yet to be determined, organizers are condent. We nd it to be so powerful when students have the opportunity to network with each other online, Laub says. A bounty of resources are available to those hoping to start a GSA including live-stream online tutorials and national conferences and summits. GSA clubs take action to begin to change the school environment and they educate teachers and peers, they work to change policies, Laub says. Thats what we focus on in our National Gathering is how to help GSA clubs when you go back to your home state here are the concrete things that your GSA clubs can do to take action to make it better for LGBT youth. Not just to create a safe haven within your club, but then to work on changing the school environment.

AU sole D.C. college campus to win perfect gay score

Nearly double the number of schools from last year have received a ve-star rating on Campus Prides LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index, which was recently released. These 33 schools are all over the country; American University is the only school in the D.C. area to receive the perfect rating. Since 2001, colleges and universities are encouraged to update their Campus Climate Index with new data and information that reects their institutions continuing efforts to create safer, more inclusive campuses by answering more than 50 self-assessment questions. Some of the questions these schools are asked to answer include: Does your campus include sexual orientation in public written statements about diversity and multiculturalism?, Does your campus offer health insurance coverage to employees same-sex partners?, and Does your campus have a LGBT alumni group within the existing alumni organization? The schools that received a perfect rating excelled in eight areas: LGBT policy inclusion, LGBT support and institutional commitment, LGBT academic life, LGBT student life, LGBT housing, LGBT campus safety, LGBT counseling and health and LGBT recruitment and retention efforts. American University scored ve stars in all but two of these areas. The school received 4.5 stars for housing and residence life and only 3.5 stars for campus safety. According to the indexs report card for the school, campus police are not trained on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression issues. Tax savings galore for home buyers

Potential D.C. homeowners may not realize the thousands they can save under current rates

If ever there was a time to buy, its now. Rates are as low as they can possibly be and rents are higher than they have been in years. In the District, you can add terric tax savings along with an FHA loan to help move you into a property with only 3.5 percent of the purchase price as a down payment. With the low rates (you may even want to consider an adjustable rate) and these tax savings, your payment will likely be less than what you are paying in rent. The District of Columbia offers a variety of opportunities to save money on your home purchase. Types of savings range from a $5,000 tax credit, to limits on property tax increases, tax relief for senior citizens or disabled property owners and even programs that provide for ve years of real property tax exemptions for those who qualify for the program. Lets break it down: D.C. Homestead Exemption: The program for which the most people will qualify for is the D.C. Homestead Exemption, which gives homeowners two important benets: $67,500 is deducted from the assessed value of the residence to calculate property taxes and the tax rate applied to the assessment is the lowest tax rate imposed by the D.C. government (85 cents per $100). In order to qualify, you must own a property in the District of Columbia, occupy the property as a principal resident and be subject to D.C. income taxation during the period the property receives the Homestead deduction. If you own a property in D.C., live there full time and pay D.C. taxes, you qualify. Thats savings applied to yearly tax bill dependent on purchase price. D.C. $5,000 Homebuyer Tax Credit For those purchasing a home in the District of Columbia (who have not owned a home in D.C. within one year of the purchase) as their principal residence, this program provides you with a $5,000 tax credit. If you purchase a home with another person, you can divvy up the $5,000. Purchasers are only eligible for the entirety of this program if their modied Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is $70,000 as a single ler and $110,000 as joint lers. You are entitled to a partial credit if your modied AGI is less than $90,000 as a single ler and $130,000 as joint lers. This credit can also be spread out over ve years. Note: This is a credit, not a deduction so you will receive $5,000 off your total tax bill, not $5,000 deducted from your taxable income. D.C. Tax Abatement Program This great program allows for up to ve years of exemption from real property taxes for those who qualify. To qualify, the purchase price of your property must be $332,000 or less and your household income must be below the set household income limits ($56,820 for one person, $64,920 for two people, $73,020 for three people, etc). Not to worry, if you have already purchased a property, this program can be applied retroactively. If your house costs $332,000, thats a savings of about $14,000 over ve years. Additionally, the buyer is exempt from paying the Recordation Tax at settlement, which is 1.1 percent of the purchase price. An added bonus, the seller can elect for the 1.1 percent transfer tax he or she pays to be applied as a closing cost credit to the purchaser, instead of the seller paying the transfer tax to D.C. For a house that sells for $332,000, thats $6,640 in savings. Senior Citizen or Disabled Property Owner Tax Relief If you are disabled or 65 years of age or older, you may apply for this program which reduces a qualied owners property tax by 50 percent. To qualify, you must own 50 percent or more of the property or coop unit and the total adjusted gross income of the entire property or coop unit (excluding tenants) must be less than $100,000 for the prior calendar year. Two of the Charles units flew off the market this past week, and Gorman anticipates all eight units on Harvard Street will meet with similar success when they are completed in four to five months. Hes already looking for the next project to put in the pipeline and has found that for just about every shell thats offered for sale, there are usually two or three development companies fighting to get their hands on it. But the inventory is desperately needed in those areas as the population has increased steadily for the past decade in Washington, and specifically in popular locations like U-Street and Adams Morgan.
