TAALMALA DIGI-60S OPERATION MANUAL 1.

GENERAL INFORMATION Congratulations on possessing the latest model of the Taalmala electronic tabla digi-60S. The digi-60S is a state-of-the-art digital musical instrument that has been designed by the pioneers in Indian electronic musical instruments. This instrument has a natural tabla sound along with sophisticated features unmatched by any other model of electronic tabla. These are : I. 60 thekas in various taals that can be played at any tempo. II. 10 of these can be modified by the user and stored in memory. III. A multi-functional digital display for indicating taal number, matra number, pitch and tempo. IV. Digital tuning of pitch with facility for fine tuning within half notes. V. Two settings for bayan. VI. Memory for storing the fine tuned pitch, tempo and bayan setting. VII. Two user programmable thekas that can be stored in memory. VIII. Operation on AC Mains on any voltage between 90- 260V or six internal dry batteries (C size). Added to these is the established stamp of quality and reliability associated with all Radel products. The volume and balance control knobs are provided on the top of the instrument. All other selections are made through a keypad. A conveniently located display on the front face shows the selections made. The keypad consists of 10 number keys for selecting any of the 60 thekas. Up and Down keys operate on either pitch or tempo depending on the mode of operation. The ALT, PGM/ MEM, START and STOP keys make up the rest of the keypad. 2. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS : I. Connect the AC Mains cord into the wall socket and switch the instrument ON by turning the VOL knob clockwise. The display would indicate 00 which is the selection for Teen taal. II. Set the BALANCE control to the middle setting SELECTING A THEKA III. Select the number corresponding to the desired theka. (Refer chart on the instrument). The display would correspondingly indicate the same. Press the START key. The selected theka would start playing at a tempo and pitch previously stored in memory. Select another theka and press its number. The theka will change automatically at the beginning of the cycle to the newly selected theka. CHANGING THE TEMPO IV. Press Up and Down keys to increase or decrease the tempo. The display would temporarily indicate the tempo in matras per minute. 4 ranges of tempo are provided - drut, madhya laya, vilambit and ati-vilambit. The default tempo is 'drut'. You can increase / decrease the speed within this range without stopping the theka. To select the next lower range, stop the theka and press the DOWN arrow once. Pressing this 3 times will set the Taalmala to ati vilambit. From this (slowest) range you can increase the speed upto drut (fastest range) without stopping the theka. FILLER-BOLS IN LOWER TEMPO:Filler bols are provided in the lower tempos to give a natural effect. These can be turned off / on by switching off the instrument, then keeping the 'START' button pressed, switching it on. CHANGING THE PITCH V. To change the pitch, press the ALT key once. The display would now indicate the pitch as per the western music scale (C, C#, D, etc.). Press the Up or Down key to change the pitch by half notes. FINE TUNING THE PITCH VI. To obtain any pitch in-between two standard pitch settings, press ALT key again. The display would now flash. Use the Up and Down keys to raise or lower the pitch as desired.

CHANGING THE LEFT HAND (BAAYAAN) DEPTH VII. Pressing ALT key again displays LH. In this mode, pressing Up or Down key changes the bayan gumki setting to a shallow or deep setting. VIII. Press ALT again to put the instrument back into the normal display (matra indication). SAVING INTO MEMORY IX. Pressing MEM key while the theka is playing causes the current settings of pitch, tempo and bayan into memory. These settings will be automatically recalled when the instrument is switched ON. 3. EDITING A THEKA The first ten thekas (00 to 09) can be edited by the user and re-stored in memory. This enables a user to customise a theka to his/her own taste. I. Select the theka required to be edited. Stop the theka if it is playing. II. Press PGM key and then Down key. The display would now indicate PE. III. Press Up key and step through the theka bol by bol till the bol to be changed is played. IV. Press the key with the new bol to replace the old bol. V. If any more bols are to be changed, repeat steps 3 and 4 mentioned above. VI. Finally, press START key to exit the EDIT MODE. The edited theka would now have replaced the original theka in memory. VII. Press START key again to play the theka. To restore the original factory setting of any theka press 'PGM' and '9' buttons one after the other. This procedure also restores thekas if they get corrupted at any time. 4. PROGRAMMING A NEW THEKA Two thekas can be programmed afresh by the user. These are stored in memory till such time that they are overwritten with a fresh theka by the user. These thekas are stored under theka numbers 98 and 99. I. If any theka is playing, stop it. II. Press PGM key followed by 1 or 2 to programme the theka under number 98 or 99 respectively. The display would indicate P1 or P2 as the case may be. III. Press the sequence of bols marked on the number keys. Bols located under the number are available by preceding the key with ALT key. IV. Press the START key to end the programming. V. The programmed theka would have automatically got stored in memory. WARRANTY Like all Radel products, the Taalmala digi-60S carries a warranty of 12 months from the date of sale. This warranty is subject to the standard terms and conditions of the manufacturer. All users are advised to ensure that the warranty counterfoils attached to this manual are returned to Radel Electronics Pvt. Ltd. within 15 days of purchase. In case of any problems, users are advised to contact the manufacturers without any delay giving details of the problem, date of purchase, dealers name and purchase document reference.
