Before using your st orage syst em, some st eps are required t o
inst all and configure t he syst em and prepare your host server.
The inst ruct ions in t his guide are designed t o get your st orage
syst em up and running quickly. I f you prefer det ailed inst ruct ions,

NOTE: AMS 2100/ 2300 st orage syst ems are delivered in a pret est ed
configurat ion, wit h t he t rays posit ioned in a cert ain locat ion. When t he sit e
t eam inst alls t he st orage syst em, t he t eam should arrange t he t rays as t hey
were t est ed ( a piece of paper supplied wit h t he st orage syst ems shows t he
t est ed t ray locat ions) . I f t he t rays are not inst alled in t he proper locat ion,
t hey generat e HDD ident ificat ion error messages I 6G100 at power up.
However, if t he sit e t eam performs an inst allat ion from scrat ch using
maint enance mode ( soft reset ) from t he Web, it does not mat t er how t he
t rays are arranged.

Pr epar i ng f or i nst al l at i on
1. Unpack i t ems
a. I nspect all shipping cart ons for signs of damage. I f you see damage,
cont act t he shipper.
b. Loosen t he band around t he cart ons and open all cart ons.
c. Remove all accessory boxes, packing mat erials, and envelopes from
t he cart ons.
d. Have at least t hree people remove t he base unit and any expansion
unit s.
e. Open and remove t he bag in which t he base unit is enclosed. Repeat
t his st ep for any expansion unit s you may have ordered.
f. Compare t he it ems received t o t he packing list . I f any it ems are
missing or damaged, cont act t he shipper immediat ely.
g. Each base unit has a key for locking and unlocking t he front bezel.
Place t he key( s) in a safe place.
h. Please keep all packing mat erials and cart ons in case you need t o
t ransport or ship t he base or expansion unit .

To complet e your inst allat ion, you need t he following it ems.
Management consol e
An I P address for each management port on t he base unit .
A PC t hat will act as a management console and meet s t he following
requirement s:
Processor: 1 GHz ( 2, 4 GHz recommended)
Random Access Memory: 1 GB ( 2 GB recommended)
Disk space: 1. 5 GB or more
Video resolut ion: 800 x 600 dot s per inch ( 1024 x 768 or higher
recommended) , 256 colors or more

5. I nst al l dr i ves
Drives are preinst alled. To inst all addit ional drives:
a. Wear an ant i- st at ic wrist st rap connect ed t o t he chassis of t he base
or expansion unit .
b. Place a finger under t he blue lever at t he t op of t he drive t ray. Then
gent ly pull t he lever forward.
c. Holding t he lever, gent ly pull t he drive t ray t oward you unt il t he t ray
is about half way out of t he slot .
d. Hold t he t op and bot t om of t he drive t ray and remove it from t he
unit .
e. I f t he slot where t he drive is t o be inst alled has a filler, remove t he
filler.
f. Orient t he new drive so t he gold edge connect ors on t he rear of t he
drive are at t he rear of t he drive t ray and t he label on t he drive faces
t he right .
g. I nsert t he drive int o t he rear of t he drive t ray and slide t he drive
forward unt il t he 3 rect angular hooks on t he drive ( 2 on t op and 1 on
t he bot t om) ent er t he rect angular holes on t he t op and bot t om of t he
drive t ray.
h. Place t he drive on t he slot s guide rail, t hen gent ly slide t he drive int o
t he slot ( shown by t he arrow in Figure 1- 3) . St op pushing when t he
blue lever at t he t op of t he drive t ray st art s t o rise.
i. Secure t he drive t ray in t he unit by pushing t he blue lever t o t he t op
unt il t he lever snaps int o place.
j . To inst all addit ional drives, repeat st eps C t hrough I .
To avoid damage t o t he array or array component s due t o elect rost at ic
discharge ( ESD) , wear an ant i- st at ic wrist st rap when handling t he array.
Connect t he clip t o an unpaint ed part of t he array chassis frame t o safely
channel any st at ic elect ricit y generat ed by your body t o ground. I f no wrist
st rap is available, ground yourself by t ouching an unpaint ed part of t he
array chassis frame.
NOTE: Drive slot s t hat do not have a drive must have a filler. I f a slot does
not have a filler inst alled, insert a filler int o t he slot . I nsert t he filler slowly,
so t he lat ch ( round dent ) on t he filler moves t o t he right .

6. At t ach t he f r ont bezel
At t aching t he front bezel is opt ional. To at t ach it :
a. The front of t he bezel has t wo hooks, one on t he lower right side and
one on t he upper right side.
I nsert t he hook on t he lower right side of t he bezel int o t he hole on
t he bot t om right part of t he base unit .
I nsert t he hook on t he upper right side of t he bezel int o t he hole
on t he t op right part of t he base unit .
b. Aft er t he hooks are engaged, gent ly push t he bezel against t he base
unit s front panel unt il t he bezel snaps int o place.
c. Lock t he bezel by insert ing t he key in t he keyhole and t urning
count erclockwise.

a. Connect one expansion unit t o t he base unit :
Use a supplied ENC cable t o connect t he PATH# 0 port on
cont roller 0 t o t he ENC0 I N port on t he rear of t he expansion unit .
Use a supplied ENC cable t o connect t he PATH# 0 port on
cont roller 1 t o t he ENC1 I N port on t he rear of t he expansion unit .
Gat her t he excess part of t he ENC cable in a circle, t ight en it
gent ly and secure, and place it inside t he rack.
b. To connect a second expansion unit t o t he base unit :
Use a supplied ENC cable t o connect t he PATH# 1 port on
cont roller 0 t o t he ENC0 I N port on t he second expansion unit .
Use a supplied ENC cable t o connect t he PATH# 1 port on
cont roller 1 t o t he ENC1 I N port on t he second expansion unit .
Gat her t he excess part of t he ENC cable in a circle, t ight en it
gent ly and secure, and place it inside t he rack.
c. To connect addit ional expansion unit s, follow t he pat t ern in Figure 1-
6 on page 12.

9. Power -up t he base uni t
a. Confirm t hat bot h power recept acles on t he rear of t he base unit are
connect ed t o working out let s. The green LEDs above each recept acle
should be ON and t he green front panel READY LED should blink.
b. Press t he Pow er swit ch on t he lower right side of t he front panel of
t he base unit t o t he ON posit ion:
The base unit performs it s Power On Self Test and t he act ivit y LEDs on
t he drives flash and t hen go ON. Aft er a few minut es, t he front panel
READY LED goes ON.

10. Set Java Runt i me par amet er s i f necessar y
Aft er you inst all t he st orage unit s, use t he supplied Navigat or 2 soft ware t o
configure t he st orage unit s. I f you int end t o use t he Advanced Set t ings in
Navigat or 2 on client s running t he Microsoft Windows, Solaris, or Linux
operat ing syst em, download JRE v6. 0 ( see page 5) and set t he JRE
paramet ers described in t he following sect ions. Ot herwise, skip t o St ep
11. I nst all and log in t o Navigat or 2 on page 17.

I f your client runs Microsoft Windows, perform t he following procedure:
1. Click t he Windows St art menu, point t o Set t i ngs, and click Cont r ol
Panel . The Windows Cont rol Panel appears.
2. From t he Windows Cont rol Panel, double- click Java Cont r ol Panel . The
Java Cont rol Panel appears.
3. Click t he Jav a t ab. The Jav a t ab is displayed ( see Figure 1- 11) .

4. Click Vi ew in t he Java Appl et Runt i me Set t i ngs sect ion. The Java
Runt ime Set t ings dialog box appears.
NOTE: Before accessing Advanced Set t ings, ent er t he following memory
set t ing in t he Java Console on t he browser PC: - Xmx 192m. Ot herwise,
Advanced Set t ings will fail, and you will be locked out and unable t o access
Advanced Set t ings unt il t he login t imes out ( 20 minut es) .

1. From an XWindows t erminal, execut e t he <JRE installed directory>/
bin/jcontrol t o run t he Java Cont rol Panel.
2. Click Vi ew in t he Java Appl et Runt i me Set t i ngs sect ion. The Java
Runt ime Set t ings dialog box appears.
3. I n t he Jav a Runt i me Par amet er s field, t ype - Xmx 192m.
4. Click OK t o exit t he Java Runt ime Set t ings dialog box.
5. Click OK in t he Jav a t ab t o close t he Java Cont rol Panel dialog box.
11. I nst al l and l og i n t o Navi gat or 2
The following procedure describes how t o inst all and log in t o Navigat or 2.
a. Find out t he I P address of t he management console ( e. g., using
ipconfig) . Then change t he consoles I P address t o 192. 168. 0. x
where x is a number from 1 t o 254, excluding 16 and 17. Writ e t his
I P address on a piece of paper. You will be prompt ed for it during t he
Navigat or 2 inst allat ion procedure.
b. Disable pop- up blockers in your Web browser. We also recommend
t hat you disable ant i- virus soft ware and proxy set t ings on t he
management console when inst alling t he Navigat or 2 soft ware.
c. I nsert t he Navigat or 2 CD in t he management console CD drive and
follow t he inst allat ion wizard.

The following procedure describes how t o add arrays. As part of t his
