hen it comes to
school, costs are
rising across the
board. Though tuition hikes
get most of the publicity, ad-
ditional expenses associated
with school can add
up as well, and school
supplies are no excep-
tion.
Though it was
once easy to send kids
off to school with a
pencil case, a couple
of notebooks and a few
other accessories,
todays students live
in a digital world, and
their teachers often
rely on technology to supple-
ment lesson plans. As a result,
the cost of school supplies is
higher than ever before, and
parents are left looking for
ways to give kids the tools
they need without breaking
the bank. To do just that,
consider the following tips.
Sign up for coupons on re-
tailer Web sites. When con-
sumers purchase a product
online, prior to finalizing the
purchase many online retail-
ers ask consumers to check a
box if they would like to re-
ceive e-mail newslet-
ters and coupons.
Parents who sign up
for such newsletters
and coupons can save
substantial amounts of
money and might even
be privy to special sales
not available to the
general public. In some
cases, its not even
necessary to make a
purchase to receive the
newsletters and coupons.

Frequently Asked
Questions About:
Q: Is a facelift the only way to
achieve a younger look?
A: No.
Dr. Wise offers numerous procedures and
techniques that create a more youthful,
refreshed look.
Q: What is involved with a
facelift?
A: Dr. Wise performs minimally-invasive
facial rejuvenation procedures that restore
the young architecture of the face and
minimize recovery after surgery. By tight-
ening the neck and defining the jaw line,
Dr. Wises technique has created a long
lasting, natural and youthful appearance
in over 3,000 procedures.
Q: Does it take a long time to
recover from a facelift?
A: No.
Dr. Wise incorporates a protocol that
accelerates healing and rapidly
decreases bruising and swelling. This is
achieved by an advanced surgical
technique, nutritional supplements, and
vitamins. Most patients are able to
resume their normal routine in a relatively
short time.
Q: What is fat transfer?
A: Surgeons who perform facial
rejuvenation procedures have long
recognized the importance of volume
enhancement. Recent techniques with fat
grafting have provided for predictable
and longer lasting results. Fat is the ideal
soft tissue filler substance because it is
from your own body and you can never
have an allergic reaction. Dr. Wise
frequently performs fat transfer in
conjunction with face lifting to achieve a
more natural, youthful look.

T
iger Woods has fallen
from the top of the
leaders bulletins, the
player money list, the TV talk
shows; hes lost his best en-
dorsements, the magazine
covers, he is no longer the
talk of greatness and the man
to beat on the golf course. He
has fallen from Grace, ruined
his marriage to a wonderful
mother and a beautiful
woman, from what the public
saw as perfection at his pro-
fession and from his stoic and
focused demeanor in front of
the camera. I think his fail-
ures and performance on the
fairways of late, has generated
as much interest and public
comment, as his successes and
triumphs gained for him just
a few short years ago. Tiger
Woods has proven a lot of
things in his career, the most
of which is that he is a human
being,handicapped by the
frailties, desires, weaknesses
and emotions that go with it.
He proved not to be unbeat-
able; however, he elevated
the other players to his level
of play, like Roger Bannisters
breaking the 4 minute mile
for the first time in human
history in 1954. It took hun-
dreds of years for a man to run
that fast, where today, hun-
dreds of athletes can do it. It
took one man to prove that it
could be done and then oth-
ers quickly reached and sur-
passed Mr. Bannisters time.
The same will be said of Tiger
Woods accomplishments on
the course and I believe it will
be Tiger himself, in time,
making those comeback
statements while wearing the
Green Jacket once again at
the Masters. But, until his re-
turn to greatness and back to
the top of his game, the
sportscasters will continue to
chastise and mock him, the
fans will continue to revel in
his slump and the other play-
ers will have a chance to say
they beat the Great Tiger
Woods.
Though the public and
the reporters might count
him down and out, the play-
ers and his true fans under-
stand his talent and what a
threat he can be. When he
regains his focus, concentra-
tion and technique, he will
attack the game like he never
did before and I predict he
will be a better player, sur-
passing his best scores, com-
ing back with feats of
amazement everywhere on
the grass, sand and circum-
venting water hazards. He is
a young man who found too
much success, too quickly and
at too young an age. He has
the most recognizable face in
the world, not just the sports
world and the pressure to per-
form and constantly be in the
public eye proved too much
for him, for the moment.
After all of this he fired his
caddy, Steve Williams, (rea-
sons unknown) who found
immediate success working
with the Australian Adam
Scott. Tiger is only 35 years
old, a young man in an old
game with plenty of time for
a comeback. He has a new
coach and caddy and will
begin again despite the nega-
tive noise from the gallery
and press box.
So too, will the stock
market recover, despite the
many prognosticators predic-
tions of gloom and doom.
The economy willrecover, un-
employment will ease, banks
will lend again, the housing
market will once again gain
traction and prices will rise,
interest rates will increase on
savings vehicles, gold and sil-
ver prices willfall, 401k and
IRA values will once again
increase in value, consumer
confidence will rise and with
increased spending not far be-
hind. This is why they call
the markets cyclical. It has
always happened this way and
always will happen this way.
The big questions are: Will
you be ready for it? Will you
be positioned for it? Will you
take advantage of the de-
pressed prices of today to
profit tomorrow? Will you
take action? A question you
never want to ask yourself is:
Will you miss the boat?
Think about this for a
moment. If you are at least
40 years old, economic
malaise, such as we are cur-
rently experiencing, has hap-
pened in 1973, 1987, 1990,
1994, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008
and fortunes were made in
the years immediately follow-
ing by average and ordinary
working folks like us. Based
on historical facts that you
can chart and judge for your-
self and without picking indi-
vidual winning stocks, you
can benefit from the cyclical
events of the stock, bond and
housing markets, just like the
tycoons do. In most cases, a
minimum investment to get
started can be as low as a few
thousand dollars, maybe even
less. My message for this par-
ticular column is to put a lit-
tle Tiger in your tank. Its
time to get back in the game
and be an investor again.
Maybe you need a new coach
or caddy also with new win-
ning ideas, strategies and
techniques to mitigate risk
that can ensure success.
Maybe even with a few guar-
antees* thrown-in that in-
sures your retirement income.
Would you like these features
for your invested dollars and
retirement portfolio? If so,
please consider me for the
coaching and caddying posi-
tions. Id like to help. Refer-

Everyone loves a winner, especially when they fall By Mark Charnet
C
lothing styles change
on a whim according to
what trend forecasters
see as the it items of the sea-
son. People looking to keep
abreast of certain styles or just
maintain a fresh supply of differ-
ent wardrobe options may find
that replenishing a closet can be
an expensive venture. But it
doesnt have to be.
Those without a set budget
may be able to afford monthly
shopping trips to add new pieces
to a wardrobe. However, the av-
erage person lives on a tighter
budget, and there may not be as
much room for discretionary
spending on clothing and acces-
sories. According to VisualEco-
nomics.com, a family of three
making about $64,000 per year
can expect to spend roughly 4
percent of those earnings on ap-
parel and services.
People interested in re-
freshing their selection of cloth-
ing more frequently should
consider alternative options
than buying retail. Here are
some ideas to think about.
Clothing Swap
A good way to socialize
and switch-up a wardrobe is to
host a clothing swap party. In-
vite around 10 friends or family
members to be part of it. Be sure
to have at least 2 or 3 of the
same-sized people so that there
wont be an abundance of items
to fit one person and not
enough to fit another. Shoes
and accessories are also accept-
able.
Set the rules for the event,
where each person is entitled to
take as many items as she has
brought. Encourage guests to
bring clean, gently used items
that are in good quality. Because
this type of get-together in-
volves some advanced work of
sorting through clothing, be
sure to give guests ample ad-
vance notice.
Have refreshments on
hand and opportunities to chat
over styles and options. What-
ever clothes are not taken by
others can be donated to char-
ity.
Consignment Stores
It used to be that consign-
ment stores were the stepchil-
dren of the retail world. Many
people viewed them as glorified
tag sales and didnt think they
were worthy of investigation.
Nowadays, consignment
shops are big business and good
places for savvy shoppers to
visit. Much like overstock stores
sell items on discount that are
on par with department stores,
consignment shops often offer
new or very lightly used items
for resale at a fraction of the
original retail price. Plus, theyre
an ideal place to look for unique
pieces and accessories that
might otherwise have been out
of budget.
Shop Basics
When buying new items at
a store, buy pieces that can be
put together in a variety of com-
binations. Stick to similar col-
ors and themes so that each
piece will work seamlessly. Con-
sider multi-layered items that
can be worn with a cardigan or
without; or go from the office to
a dinner date afterward. Re-
member, items that blend can
be worn more often because
they wont stick out in the
minds of others as something
flashy.
Consider Shopping Online
Shoppers are often amazed
at the wide variety of items that
can be purchased online. If a
shopper doesnt see something
in a store for the price she
wants, she can comparison shop
online. Although she cant try
on merchandise, with the ex-
ception of some sites that offer
a virtual model, many online re-
tailers offer free shipping on re-
turns.
Online shopping also takes
the hassle out of visiting several
stores, finding parking and deal-
ing with crowds. Plus, a shopper
can purchase things on her own
time, whether thats early morn-

Coordinate with teachers
ahead of time. Parents should
consult their childs teacher
before school begins and
throughout the year to deter-
mine if there are any special
projects or reports coming up
that require certain supplies.
For instance, kids might need
costly graphing calculators
next semester. If parents are
given advance notice, they
can shop around to get the
best deal. Talk to local school
officials to see if its possible
to make a list of school sup-
plies available at the end of
the year instead of at the very
beginning. If so, this gives
parents several months to
shop around for the best
deals.
Do your own homework.
Parents of college-bound kids
might think an e-reader
would make the ideal gift,
saving kids the trouble of lug-
ging all those books around
campus. However, parents
should do their homework be-
fore making any such pur-
chases. Thats because not all
textbooks are available as e-
books, and kids might end up
having to buy hard copies of
their textbooks anyway. Be-
fore kids head off to college,
examine their first semester
schedule and then look on-
line for each class correspon-
ding syllabus. If most of their
required textbooks are avail-
able as e-books, then an e-
reader might make a great
gift. If not, think of some-
thing else.
Dont make the bottom line
the determining factor.
Whether a student is in grade
school, high school or college,
his or her school supplies tend
to undergo more than their
fair share of wear and tear. So
parents looking to save on
school supplies should con-
sider that when shopping.
Though the less expensive
backpack might seem more af-
fordable, make sure it can
withstand the test of time and
all the wear and tear that
comes with being a students
backpack. If not, it will likely
need to be replaced before the
school year is out, which can
end up costing more money in
the long run.
Recycle school supplies.
School supplies can be recy-
cled. At the end of each se-
mester or school year, perform
an inventory of existing school
supplies. If last semesters
notebooks were hardly used,
theres no need to buy new
ones for the new semester.
Similarly, parents who have a
couple of students in their
household can embrace hand-
me-down school supplies just
like they do with clothes. If
one child finishes the school
year, but didnt quite use up all
of their supplies, save those
supplies for the day when their
younger siblings end up in the
same class.
ing or after the kids have gone
to bed.
Explore Tailoring
Think about how Molly
Ringwalds character turned
pieces of fabric into new cre-
ations in the cult 1980s film,
Pretty in Pink. With some
simple tailoring, just about any-
one can modify items to make
them look brand new. For those
who dont know their bobbins
from their seam-rippers, make
friends with someone who does
and enlist some help with fash-
ion redesign.

D
ear Doc:
Ive had enough of
this pain in the neck
(and its not my husband)!
Despite drugs and lots of ther-
apy, my shoulder and neck
pain has been progressively
worsening for years. What can
I do?
Had Enough
Dear Had Enough:
Next to spouses and inlaws,
faulty spinal mechanics is the
primary cause of most neck
pain. Functional problems of
the spine can usually be
traced to incorrect spinal
alignment due to abnormal
posture and previous trauma.
Closely associated with ab-
normal posture are other
causes of neck pain such as
repetitive strain, muscular
weakness, and degenerative
changes of the discs and
joints of the spine.
To find the right solution
for your particular problem,
you need to be accurately as-
sessed. Chiropractic physi-
cians are specialists in the
assessment and treatment of
muscle and joint problems,
including neck and neck-re-
lated pain. From a thorough
assessment, your chiropractor
can determine the most effec-
tive and appropriate course of
care. For example, Sandra
consulted her chiropractor for
help with neck pain that for
years had been getting worse.
She had tried various thera-
pies, exercise programs and
medication to find relief, to
no avail. When the chiro-
practor examined Sandra it
was apparent she had serious
malalignment of the verte-
brae in the lower part of her
neck. Infact, x-rays showed a
complete reversal of the nor-
mal cervical curve. Her chiro-
practor explained how her
neck pain was a direct result
of this abnormal spinal posi-
tion, which was causing
muscle weakness, disc com-
pression, nerve irritation and
gradual deterioration of her
spine.
Now that Sandra under-
stood why medication, work-
ing out and various therapies
were not the answer, she
chose to work hard to correct
the real problem: alignment
of her neck. Her treatment
involved specific, gentle chi-
ropractic adjustments and
other procedures to improve
joint mobility and restore
normal spinal curves and
alignment.The result? After
several months of dedicated
work Sandras x-rays demon-
strated near-normal spinal po-
sition. Her spine was now
able to move and work better,
finally dispelling her chronic
neck pain. The impact this
had on her life was enormous.
Not only was she happy again
and able to do the things she
loved, Sandra realized with a
healthier spine she had been
given a new lease on life!

atthew graduated with honors from New York
University in 1997 and began a satisfying career in
orthopedics specializing in spine rehabilitation. Ever
keen to learn and do more for his patients Matthew began
studying diligently for his certification in Orthopedic Manual
Therapy. This training exposed him to the concept of
Maitland Australian therapy, the Maitland Concept is referred
to as a concept and not as a technique. Emphasis is placed
not on the technique of treatment but on a basic philosophy-
a thought and decision making process, involving analytical
examination and assessment on which treatment decisions are
based.
Matthew has also had the thrill of studying with world-
renowned therapists Brian Mulligan and David Butler, further
expanding his clinical skills into more diverse orthopedic and
nerve injury treatments. Not to be missed, Matthew also
trained in the McKenzie Diagnosis and treatment of the spine.
Matthew believes the combination of this training and
education in the Australian, New Zealand and American
treatment strategies have allowed him to provide broader
range of treatment options thereby helping more patients.
Matthew has been a Director of Physical Therapy for 8

their respective communities. He is excited and eager to bring

D
ogs have a unique
way of introduction
to other dogs...they
sniff each others backsides.
They do this because each dog
has a unique scent that is
produced by their anal glands
or anal sacs. While many peo-
ple arent even aware that
these glands exist, they play
an important role in a dogs
behavior. They use this scent
to identify one another, as a
form of communication, and
when they were in the wild, as
a way to mark their territory
or scare off an enemy.
Anal glands are located
just beneath the skin on either
side of the anus. The glands
produce a foul and often fishy
smelling liquid. Whenever
your pet defecates, a small
amount of this liquid is ex-
creted, contributing to your
dogs personal fragrance. Most
people never even know that
these glands exist because in
most pets they dont cause any
problems. Although anal
glands can fail to empty
sufficiently and cause a
number of issues for your
pet.
The most common
problem with anal glands
occurs when the liquid
produced by the gland
becomes thickened; they
are unable to be ex-
pressed and cannot be
emptied. This results in
impaction which is ex-
tremely uncomfortable
for your pet. Typical signs
of anal gland impaction
include scooting (drag-
ging their rear ends along
the ground) or licking/biting at
their rear end. Sometimes
stools may become loose or
even a drop of blood can be
seen in them. The good news
is anal gland impaction can
usually be cleared up quickly
by your veterinarian. Your vet-
erinarian will manually express
or empty the anal glands. This
can be a onetime trip to the
vets office but for many dogs
anal gland impaction is an on-
going problem.
There are a variety of rea-
sons why a pet might have
trouble expressing its anal
glands. Sometimes it depends
on the thickness of the secre-
tion itself which may be too
thick to express easily. Also,
the consistency or bulkiness of
an animals stools can affect
anal gland function. Stools
which are too small or too soft
might not push on the glands
enough to cause expression.
That is why its important to
make sure your pet eats a
high quality diet which is
high enough in fiber to en-
sure large solid stools. A nat-
ural way to bulk the feces is
to add a small amount of
canned pumpkin to the diet.
An unfortunate sequel to
anal gland impaction is in-
fection and abscess of the
anal gland. If an impacted
anal gland is left untreated
and not expressed, abscesses
can develop fairly quickly. In
this case, your pet will expe-
rience moderate to severe
pain versus just discomfort.
The scooting or licking the
anal area becomes more fre-
quent and dogs will often
growl or try to bite when one
tries to touch them anywhere
in that general area. Anal
gland abscesses usually require
more invasive treatment like
lancing and draining the ab-
scess plus antibiotics. It is
therefore important to bring
your pet to your veterinarian as
soon as you notice any signs
that might indicate an anal
gland problem.
You are lucky if your pet
has never had an anal gland
problem. Now that you know
they exist, it is important to
watch for any signs of anal
gland problems in your pet and
to act promptly if they do.

D
id you ever notice the
little boy on the soccer
field who just could not
quite kick the ball, tripped over
people and had poor coordina-
tion when trying to dribble?
Or the little girl in ballet class
who had a difficult time imitat-
ing the teachers body move-
ments and sequencing the dance
steps? What about the first grad-
er on the playground who con-
stantly barged into other chil-
dren and just didnt seem to see
obstacles in front of him causing
him to trip and fall constantly?
Most people refer to these chil-
dren as clumsy, but there may be
a better explanation.
For the last 100 years poor
motor coordination or clumsiness
has been recognized as a problem.
Recently, the term Develop-
mental Coordination Disorder
(DCD) has been used when re-
ferring to children with motor co-
ordination difficulties. This is a
fairly common childhood disor-
der and is usually identified in
school age children between the
ages of 6-12. Studies indicate that
the prevalence of DCD is esti-
mated at 8-12% of all school-
aged children with more boys di-
agnosed than girls (2:1). As a re-
sult of the wide diversity in the
DCD diagnosis, finding its true
cause has been difficult and is un-
known at this time. Some spec-
ulate that DCD can be caused by
an injury that occurs before or
during the birthing process. Oth-
ers say that DCD is a result of
damage on the cellular level.
In order for a child to be diag-
nosed with DCD it must impact
on some aspect of his or her life.
These children often exhibit
poor balance, tripping on un-
even surfaces, an awkward run-
ning pattern, dropping items,
frequent tripping and falling,
difficulty imitating body posi-
tions and following 2-3 step
motor directions. These motor
problems will affect the childs
ability to complete motor ori-
ented tasks. Because of these
problems, children often per-
form poorly in sports demon-
strating slow reaction and
movement times. Since these
children do not feel successful
when participating in sports,
they may feel insecure. This in-
security can lead to a more
sedentary lifestyle for the child
thus causing poor muscular
strength, decreased muscle force
and ultimately weight gain. Un-
fortunately, children with DCD
may experience other difficul-
ties, besides the physical limita-
tions. These children may
exhibit psychosocial problems.
Because these children may not
excel in one area, they may seek
less socially desirable types of at-
tention. They may be the class
clown or act out more often
than the other children. Ado-
lescents with DCD have been
found to have fewer friends,
lower self esteem and more anx-
iety than their peers without
DCD.
Historically parents have
been told not to worry about
their childs clumsiness. The
child will outgrow the problem.
However, current research
states that children do not out-
grow clumsiness and without in-
tervention, will not improve.
Motor control processes
are complex and depend on in-
tegrating the sensory, percep-
tual, cognitive and motor
systems. A skilled Pediatric
Physical Therapist can work on
integrating all of these systems
to assist the child in working to-
ward age appropriate functional
goals. By breaking down com-
ponents of a task, practicing
each component repetitively
and translating the new skill
into the childs natural environ-
ment, motor skills can be
greatly improved, confidence
and self assuredness enhanced
and enthusiasm and participa-
tion in sports and age appropri-
ate games greatly increased. I
have worked with hundreds of
children with symptoms that
fall into this category with ex-
cellent and permanent results
that both parents and children
are greatly pleased with.
Gena Livingston is a pediatric
physical therapist, who brings over
five years of experience to Kids
Therapy Center of Riverdale.
Specializing in early childhood in-
tervention, Gena is very experi-
enced treating children with cere-
bral palsy, delayed motor develop-
ment, autism, torticollis, post-sur-
gical corrections, and athletic in-
juries. If you would like to sched-
ule an appointment or consult

odays kids are busier
than ever before. Be it
the increasingly com-
petitive nature of scholastic
life or the increase of two-in-
come households where kids
need something to do other
than come directly home af-
ter school, children today are
much busier than their
school-aged counterparts of
yesteryear.
While it can be fun and
beneficial for kids to partici-
pate in extracurricular activi-
ties, finding the right fit isnt
as easy as it sounds. When
helping kids find an extracur-
ricular activity, its best to
consider a host of factors. Es-
pecially keep in mind that
not all kids are the same with
respect to interests. And what
was enjoyed by their parents
wont necessarily be enjoyed
by them.
Getting Started
The best place to start is
to speak to kids about their
interests. Just because Dad
loved playing football doesnt
mean Junior is destined to be
a gridiron great. Kids have
their own interests, and those
interests can be cultivated
with the right extracurricular
activity. For example, a cre-
ative child might enjoy an
after-school art class a couple
of times per week. Parents
should also consider extracur-
ricular that can help kids
grow as people. For instance,
a child whos shy in public but
loves hamming it up at home
might embrace an after-
school theater program.
Once options have been dis-
cussed with kids, take in a ses-
sion or two before
committing to anything. The
shy youngster might visit the
local theater program and
enjoy it thoroughly, or he or
she might decide against it.
Either way, a visit will give
kids and parents a sense of
what the program is like and
whether or not its the right
fit. When visiting, observe
the nature of the program. Is
it an encouraging, vibrant en-
vironment? Do the adults and
kids involved appear to be
having fun?

Parents want their kids
to be as safe after school as
they are during it. When
looking for an extracurricular
activity, inquire about the
staff-to-child ratio and about
the staff s professional back-
ground. Any staff-to-child
ratio that is greater than 12:1
likely indicates a program
that is understaffed, which
mean kids could wont get the
attention they need. Also, ask

Church of Wayne is holding au-
ditions for its upcoming produc-

for the staff s references and
work history in the field of
child care. If certification is
necessary or recommended,
make sure the staff meets all
requirements.
Parents should also in-
quire about program costs.
Though many programs are
upfront about fees, some have
hidden fees that can add up.
Such fees can be for uniforms,
equipment, class trips, etc.
Extra fees dont have to ex-
clude a program from consid-
eration, but its better to
know about them in advance
than have them come as a
surprise.
Consider a Childs Grade
Level
A childs age and grade
level should also be consid-
ered when choosing an ex-
tracurricular activity. Consult
teachers about finding an age-
appropriate extracurricular
activity. For example, less
competitive activities that
emphasize fun might be more
appropriate for kids in kinder-
garten and the first grade. For
second graders, activities not
offered at school, like learn-
ing to play an instrument, can
help cultivate a childs inter-
est in a noncompetitive envi-
ronment. As kids reach third
grade and beyond, consider
more rules-based activities,
including team sports, as kids
at that age are more capable
of understanding rules and
handling losing than younger
kids. As children get older
and move on to middle
school, look for activities that
reinforce learning and help
develop a young persons
character, including their
ability to interact with others.
When looking for an ex-
tracurricular activity for kids,
parents should consider a host
of factors, including the
childs interests and age.

H
omeowners who
have had prior issues
with mold know just
how pesky a mold
problem can be.
When mold spores
land on surfaces that
are wet, mold may
begin to grow in-
doors. And the
growth of mold takes
just a matter of
hours. According to
the National Associ-
ation of Home
Builders, all it takes
is 48 hours for a
moist environment
combined with room
temperature to pro-
duce mold growth.
When mold
does begin to grow,
homeowners will
notice a less-than-
welcoming aroma
often characterized
as musty. In addi-
tion, mold growth,
which is most com-
mon in areas of the home like
the kitchen, bathroom and
basement where humidity and
moisture levels are higher, can
be unsightly and unhealthy.
In 2004, the Institute of Med-
icine linked indoor exposure
to mold with upper respiratory
tract symptoms, cough and
wheeze in people who, prior
to exposure, were healthy.
The IOM also found exposure
to mold can exacerbate
asthma conditions for people
who already have asthma and
even linked respiratory illness
in otherwise healthy children
to exposure to mold.
What such research
highlights is the em-
phasis homeowners
must place on remov-
ing mold from their
homes. While mold
is a natural part of
the environment
that is impossible to
eliminate entirely,
homeowners can
take steps to stop
mold growth in their
homes and protect
themselves and their
families along the
way. When address-
ing a mold problem,
keep in mind the po-
tentially negative im-
pact mold can have
on your health and
dress accordingly.
Wear long sleeves,
gloves, protective
goggles, and even a
mask or respirator that covers
the nose and mouth to reduce
your risk of developing a res-
piratory illness.
Fix leaky pipes and addi-
tional water problems. Mold
growth can cause cosmetic
damage that can never be re-
paired. But fixing leaky pipes

T
odays homeowners are
increasingly eco-con-
scious. As a result,
many homeowners take an
eco-friendly approach toward
home improvement projects.
Whereas homeowners once
worried most about their bot-
tom lines without regard for the
environment, nowadays a pro-
jects carbon footprint is high
on many a homeowners prior-
ity list. Whats more, eco-
friendly additions or adjust-
ments to a home might make
homeowners eligible for tax
breaks, and such projects often
make a home more appealing
to prospective buyers. Some of
the more common ways to
make a home more eco-friend-
ly includes:
Replace vinyl flooring with
natural linoleum or recycled
rubber floors.
and addressing other water
problems, including leaky
windows, is a good way to stop
future mold growth and pre-
vent further cosmetic damage
to the home.
Scrub and dry moldy sur-
faces. When addressing moldy
surfaces, scrub them hard with
detergent and water, once fin-
ished, dry the surfaces thor-
oughly. Going forward,
routinely clean areas of the
home that have had mold
growth in the past.
Discard certain materials
that fall victim to mold.
Porous or absorbent surfaces
will likely need to be dis-
carded once they have been
victimized by mold growth.
Ceiling tiles and carpets, for
example, are especially diffi-
cult to rid of mold once its
settled in because the mold
finds cracks and crevices in
which it essentially hides from
cleaning. In such cases, its
best to simply discard the
items and have them re-
placed.
Do not mask the mold prob-
lem. Painting or caulking over
mold wont work. When ap-
plied to moldy surfaces, paint
typically cracks. Instead of
wasting paint and time, scrub
and dry the surfaces, making
sure the entire mold is gone,
and then paint or caulk.
Leave big jobs to the pros.
Smaller mold growths can be
addressed by the average
homeowner. However, when
mold growth is especially
large or mold has grown on
valuable items, including
heirlooms, its best to hire a
professional. When doing so,
try to find one a friend or
neighbor can recommend, as
not all mold-removal special-
ists are created equal. If its
hard to find a recommenda-
tion, look for a specialist who
is affiliated with a professional
organization. Such organiza-
tions typically insist their
members have a certain level
of experience and training
before they can become
members.

W
ith the economy
still on the mend,
homeowners must
monitor their spending care-
fully. Such frugality is neces-
sary across the board, even
when it comes to home im-
provement.
While it's important not
to cut too many corners when
it comes to home improve-
ment projects, there are ways
homeowners can save money
without sacrificing safety and
quality.
Scale things down. A full-
scale kitchen remodel might
be a dream project, but home-
owners wary of committing
too much money to a project
might want to consider a
smaller scale project. For ex-
ample, instead of revamping
the entire kitchen, address a
single part of the kitchen,
such as replacing vinyl floor-
ing or refacing the cabinets.
Such projects don't require
the financial commitment of
a full-scale remodel but can
give the kitchen a whole new
look.
Chip in. Many home im-
provement projects are best
left to the professionals. How-
ever, much of the cost of such
projects goes toward labor, in-
cluding preparation before
the project and cleanup once
it's finished. When interview-
ing contractors, ask if there is
any prep work you can do to
reduce labor costs and if
there's a way to handle
cleanup yourself. Cleanup
might be somewhat tricky, as
certain materials might need
to be disposed of in accor-
dance to local laws. But prep
work might be easily handled
by homeowners and garner
substantial savings.
Shop around. In the current
market, homeowners looking
to make improvements must
recognize the market benefits
them. Shop around for a con-
tractor and get some compet-
itive offers. While it's not
always best to choose the
contractor who submits the
lowest estimate, the nature of
the current market suggests

all contractors should submit
competitive offers and be
flexible. Flexibility might
come with a few conditions,
such as more time to com-
plete the project, but those
conditions might be worth it
if it means saving money.
Make sacrifices in other
areas. Safety and quality
should always trump cost
when it comes to home im-
provement projects. If there
aren't too many ways to save
money on a given project,
make sacrifices in other areas
and factor those sacrifices
into the budget for the proj-
ect. Instead of a summer vaca-
tion at a resort, visit a nearby
hotspot that provides the
same R&R but for a fraction
of the cost of a more expen-
sive resort. Such sacrifices
don't have to be permanent,
but they can help weather the
financial storm until the proj-
ect is successfully completed.

projects no longer
need to be halted due
to missing tools or misplaced
measurements. Thanks to ad-
vancements in mobile phone
technology, homeowners can
now keep projects on schedule
thanks to a host of apps that
make it possible for even the
most forgetful do-it-yourselfer
to complete projects on time.
Carpentry apps provide rulers,
protractors, and a host of other
features that can help with
projects big and small, be it
hanging pictures in the family
room or completing a molding
project. Homeowners can also
make the most of sizing apps
that allow them to enter the
square footage of their homes
or individual rooms and com-
pare costs of supplies and ma-
terials. Those tackling painting
projects can take advantage of
painting palette apps that
make it easy to match colors
and compare colors for interior
or even exterior projects. Dry-
wall calculator apps enable
homeowners tackling the often
troublesome task of measuring
drywall to finish the project
much more quickly and with
significantly less stress.

reating simple, deli-
cious meals does not
have to be difficult.
With the right ingredients on
hand and a little know-how,
you can create tasty meals
right from your own kitchen.
Italian dishes full of flavorful,
fresh, tomato bases are some
of the most popular around.
Just think of the multitude of
pasta options or meat, seafood
and vegetable a la parmigiana
dishes.
Tomatoes: A staple of Italian
cooking
Tomatoes are the heart
of many popular Italian-style
or Mediterranean meals. Not
every home chef has the time
or the space to grow their
own tomatoes. Even still, cer-
tain varieties taste better than
others. Pre-packaged toma-
toes are a handy option for
home cooks. When shopping,
select high-quality, fresh-tast-
ing, garden-ripe tomatoes,
like those from Pomi.
Not all tomatoes are cre-
ated equal. Those from Pomi
are specially grown in Italy
and processed right next to
the fields where they were
harvested. These 100-percent
natural tomatoes yield some
of the freshest flavor for cook-
ing. Studies indicate that
cooked tomatoes are an im-
portant component in im-
mune system health.
Tomatoes are high in ly-
copene an antioxidant
that gives tomatoes their
bright color and can fend off
certain cancers.
You also want to look for
tomatoes that are safely pack-
aged, without the use of BPA
(bisphenol A), a carcinogenic
chemical that is often used in
plastics and in resin linings of
metal cans. Pomi stay-fresh
packaging is always BPA-free
and is specially designed to
ensure a long shelf life. These
tomatoes are always available.
So, just Pomi when the urge
to create delicious food strikes
you.
Secret of the professionals
The popularity of cable how-
to cooking channels has en-
abled home cooks to learn
some insider secrets from
some of the worlds most
renowned chefs.
For decades, Mario
Batali has wowed diners with
his culinary flair at several
successful restaurants, includ-
ing Del Posto and showed
his expertise on many long-
running television cooking
shows. He has also authored
several best-selling cook-
books. In his 2010 release
Molto Gusto, Batali an ex-
pert on authentic Italian cui-
sine routinely recommends
the use of Pomi tomatoes for
his collection of pizza, pasta
and antipasti recipes.
Inspired menu creation
Chefs looking to get started
on their next mouthwatering
culinary creation can con-
sider this recipe for Chicken
Breast Sorrento, courtesy of
Pomi.
Chicken Breast Sorrento
2 whole chicken breasts,
skinned
1 cup water
11/2 cups Pomi, strained
1 small onion
1 small carrot
3 tablespoons olive oil
Juice of one lemon
Salt and pepper
Lettuce for garnish
Simmer chicken breasts
in water, tightly covered, with
1/4 teaspoon salt, onion and
carrot until tender (about 1/2
hour), adding water if neces-
sary. Cool, drain, remove
bones and slice breasts. Mix
the lemon juice with olive
oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper
and Pomi. Pour a small por-
tion of the sauce onto a plat-
ter, place the sliced chicken
breasts on top and pour the
remaining sauce over the
chicken. Garnish with let-
tuce.

hough the housing mar-
ket might not be boom-
ing there are still buyers
out there looking for a place to
call their own. Some potential
sellers might prefer a patient ap-
proach to selling their homes,
choosing to do so when the
market rebounds and homes re-
gain some of their lost value.
Other sellers might not have a
choice and must make do with
selling in a lackluster market.
Regardless of which cate-
gory youre in, there are easy
ways to boost your homes value.
Making minor changes to a
home can add to your asking
price, whether youre putting
your home on the market this
week or waiting for the market
to rebound. The following tasks
might not take much effort, but
they pay dividends.
Work on the yard. An appeal-
ing lawn is still a great way to
catch a prospective buyers eye.
When a home boasts a lush
lawn and well-manicured trees,
its hard to ignore that For Sale
sign out front. If landscaping has
proven an Achilles heel in the
past, make an effort to take bet-
ter care of your property in the
months ahead. It doesnt take
long for even the most neg-
lected lawn to rebound from
disrepair. By the time you feel
confident to put that for sale
sign out front, you might just be
putting it up in a lush lawn no
buyer can resist.
Upgrade appliances. Prospec-
tive buyers wont be thrilled if
they walk into a home and see
outdated appliances. Some
might even feel older appliances
indicate a homeowner who
cared little about appearances
and might begin to wonder if
there are any additional areas
that might have been neglected
around the house. Stainless
steel appliances in the kitchen
and even new fixtures in the
bathroom are aesthetically ap-
pealing and tend to excite buy-
ers. Homeowners who arent
immediately putting their prop-

erty up for sale can gradually up-
grade their appliances to lessen
some of the financial toll such
purchases take.
Replace the carpet. A clean
carpet might make a world of
difference to a homes inhabi-
tants, but a new carpet will be
more appealing to prospective
buyers. Choose a neutral-toned
carpet that will boast a more
universal appeal.
Paint the home. A fresh coat
of paint or new siding is always
attractive to prospective buyers.
If your home hasnt had a new
coat of paint in awhile that
might make buyers feel the
home is musty or old. Many
buyers judge a book by its cover,
and sellers want their homes
exterior to be as attractive as
possible. Homeowners can also
paint rooms inside the home to
give it a fresh and welcoming
feel.
Clean up around the house. A
cluttered house will almost cer-
tainly repel buyers. Buyers want
a home thats roomy and well
kept, but clutter creates the op-
posite impression. Organize the
closets to make them appear
more roomy and clean up any
areas that have become clut-
tered consider temporarily
renting a storage unit to house
excess stuff from closets. Base-
ments or utility closets might be
handy for storage, but they
should be open and clean before
hosting an open house. The less
clutter a home has, the more
spacious it will appear and the
more money sellers can likely
demand for the home.
