The Moorestown Sun

About 20 years ago, this article
never would have existed, but
today its a necessity. School is
just around the corner, and stu-
dents and parents alike will be
flocking to different school dis-
trict websites to see their class
lists, download permission forms,
physical forms, and even track
their grades.
Parents of students at
Moorestown Township Public
School District can access all
three elementary schools, two
middle schools, and Moorestown
High School at the districts web-
site, www.mtps.com.
The district website is a great
source of information, breaking
news, and school changes for all
of the schools in the Moorestown
Township School District.
The welcome page features
breaking news information run-
ning down the right side of the
page.
Here parents and students can
view upcoming events and any
public documents that have been
released in the past few months.
Parents can access each indi-
vidual school page by clicking on
the schools tab at the top of the
welcome page and selecting an in-
dividual school. Here parents can
access specific information about
each school, school calendars,
and can receive faculty informa-
tion.
The website also offers three
specialized programs that par-
ents can sign up for to receive spe-
cific school information and in-
formation about their students.
All three of these programs re-
quire parents to sign up for an ac-
count and to log in with each
visit.

The Moorestown Sun
It looks as if voters will get
their say on liquor in
Moorestown Township come this
November. The township clerk
verified two petitions for referen-
dum questions to appear on the
upcoming ballot to allow for the
sale of liquor in the Moorestown
Township Mall.
Before the questions can be
placed on the ballot, the
Moorestown Township Council
members will have to approve
them, Township Clerk Patricia
Hunt said. A ruling on the two
referendums will most likely be
made at the Monday, Aug. 22
council meeting. Please visit
www.moorestownsun.com to see
the results.
Representatives from the Penn-
sylvania Real Estate Investment
Trust submitted two petitions to
the township clerk on Friday, July
30, to have the two referendums
placed on the November election
ballot for the allowance of liquor
to be sold at fine dining restau-
rants in the Moorestown Mall.
Voters will cast their decision
on two referendums. One will
allow liquor licenses to be sold in
the township for individual glass-
es of alcohol, while the second
will allow these licenses to only
be sold to fine dining restaurants
in the Moorestown Mall.
A PREIT representative, Chris
Russell, said the organization is
viewing the two referendum
questions as a matched set. He
did say that if the first question
allowing the sale of liquor in
Moorestown was passed and the
second question restricting it to
the mall failed, liquor sales would
still technically be allowed in the
township.
Technically yes, the first ques-
tion would remain. But we be-
lieve the reason why the question
did not pass four years ago is be-
cause people dont want it every-
where. We believe that if its re-
stricted, people will see the bene-
fit in the sale of liquor at the
mall, he said.
Russell said PREIT is looking
forward to disseminating some
more information to Moorestown
voters to help get these referen-
dums passed.
Were pleased that they were
certified. We were confident that
they had more than enough sig-

Motor vehicle crashes are the
leading cause of death among
teens in the United States, with
an average of 6,000 teens killed
each year and another 300,000 in-
jured.
In New Jersey during 2009,
there were 47,960 crashes involv-
ing teen drivers. Out of that num-
ber, 34 teen drivers and eight teen
passengers lost their lives. Preva-
lent factors in those fatal crashes
included speed, distractions, in-
experience and the lack of seat
belt use. All of these issues and
more are addressed in the course
curriculum.
Persons completing the course
may receive up to a 5 percent dis-

Although the course is free,

We arent even close to being excited

Hence, we were candidate-less.
Until now.
We hereby endorse Philadelphia
Mayor Michael Nutter for president
for one simple reason: The man tells it
like it is, which is way, way more than
what we are getting from any other
politician.
A week or so ago, Nutter threw po-
litical correctness out the window. Ac-
cording to recent reports, he spoke
with passion, honesty and sincerity.
And that's more than we get from most
politicians, who are worried only
about securing votes and pandering to
their political bases.
Nutter channeled Bill Cosby when
he talked about personal responsibili-
ty and addressing some of todays is-
sues. It wasn't the usual political fluff
we hear from officeholders. He didn't
blame society or unknown, unseen,
unavoidable forces of nature.
No, he said that parents need to be
responsible for raising their kids.
Now, it's sad that saying something
so obvious, so simple, so logical gar-
ners this much attention. It's sad be-
cause we've come to expect so little out
of our elected leaders. We've come to
expect excuses, lies and cowardice.
We're so conditioned to watching sup-
posed "leaders" dodge and duck basic
questions that, when someone just
says what's on his mind and steps up
to seriously address an issue, we're
blown away.
So, Mr. Mayor, how about it? Toss

Liquor wont help the
Moorestown Mall
In trying to separate the facts from the
fiction, I did some online research (the de-
cline of malls) and found that the problem
with Moorestown Mall is not that there is
no liquor, but that it is a mall.
Malls started to go out of vogue in the
90s and were helped along by the declining
economy of this past decade.
What has happened with our mall sim-
ply mirrors what has happened across the
country.
In fact, it is a problem in Europe, Aus-
tralia and other continents as well. Even
before the economy slumped, shoppers had
mall fatigue and headed for strip malls,
like our Centerton Square.
Here are just a few of the headlines I
found online:
n Atlanta Area Shopping Malls Fight-
ing For Survival, Atlanta Bankruptcy
News, Dec. 23, 2010.
n Lights Out for Mall Tenant, Wall
Street Journal, April 4, 2011.
n Recession Turns Malls Into Ghost
Towns, Wall Street Journal, May 22, 2009.
n Retail: Is the American Shopping
Mall Dead? The Daily Beast, Nov. 11, 2008.
PREIT and our mayor espouse the wis-
dom of changing the long-standing laws of
our town in the name of saving the mall
and property tax relief. It seems to me that
PREIT can always hold us hostage with
this mall-doing-poorly story to get what it
wants.
Here are a few questions for the mayor
and PREIT:
What if the liquor licenses are approved
and the mall still doesnt do well?
It doesnt seem likely that Moorestown
will revert to its former status. Now we
have to pay for high-priced drinks (plus tip
and tax) instead of bringing our own fa-
vorite bottle.
How many fine dining patrons visit a
mall before or after their fine meal? (This
is a rhetorical question).
Who decides what establishments will
be granted fine dining status and there-
by be able to obtain liquor licenses? This is
a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Does trying to limit this to the mall con-
stitute spot zoning (or something similar)?
Moorestown lost legal battles on spot zon-
ing before (multiple times).
Why would we want to emulate Cherry
Hill when, for all their liquor licenses, they
pay higher taxes than we do?
The upfront infusion to the tax coffers
from the first-time sale of the liquor licens-
es is a fleeting one-time event.
The yearly renewal fee is negligible in
terms of tax relief.
The average homeowner stands to possi-
bly get about $45 of tax relief per year from
this major change.
The administrative costs to handle
liquor licenses, plus the additional police
or police overtime that will be needed will
eat into this tax relief.
Once the liquor licenses are sold for the
first time by the town, future sales are pri-
vate transactions between the seller and
the buyer.
The township has no control after the
initial sale. Buyers with deep pockets for
lawsuits can challenge the spot zoning and
win. Then liquor is sold beyond the con-
fines of the mall.
This liquor license recommendation
that emerged from the Economic Develop-
ment Advisory Committee about five years
ago represents the interests of builders
and developers, not Moorestown citizens.
Fellow Moorestonians, please, do your
homework before heading to the polls in
November.
Linda Carskadon
Who really wants liquor
in Moorestown?
As a resident of Moorestown, I am disap-
pointed to see the most recent turn of
events regarding the two petitions put
forth to be on the ballot in November.
Regardless of what one thinks about ei-
ther of the two causes, the processes could
not be more different.
On one hand, the Open Space petition
was collected by local residents, certified
on each page, and each collector of signa-
tures signed that they collected the signa-
tures on their page, took an oath before a
notary and signed a statement to that ef-
fect.
Most, if not every signature, had the
signers address next to it.
In stark contrast, the collectors of the
liquor petition were, in most cases, not
from town. Many were employees of the
mall. Each page of signatures they collect-
ed only had the collectors initials on it,
maybe. And in many cases addresses do
not accompany signatures.
Yet the latter was certified per council
and the former was not. Very disappoint-
ing!
Maryanne Fallows
Vote No to liquor licenses in
Moorestown
In regard to the petitions regarding the
referendum on liquor sales in Moorestown:
Theyve got to be kidding!
Why would anyone be in favor of a refer-
endum that will not allow for liquor sales
in Moorestown on boats, planes, and trains
tsk, tsk, how restrictive.
please see LETTERS, page 7
Maybe the mall is not
an asset at all
I agree with Mr. Stanley
Ralphs eloquent letter to The
Sun, expressing his deep regard
for the intangible aspects of the
wonderful town in which we live.
Yes, the charm of our town is
difficult to describe and he said it
much better than I ever could.
I often tell people everyday of
my retirement living in
Moorestown is like being on vaca-
tion. It would be easy to chip
away bit by bit until we no longer
recognize it.
If these proposals are passed, it
is just a matter of time before a
smart restaurant owner on Main
Street tests them in court. Im
sure every food business in town
feels that they are also fine din-
ing.
Has anyone ever calculated the
costs to the township of harbor-
ing the Moorestown Mall in
terms of police, fire and emer-
gency workers, traffic, accidents,
etc.?
I think this information is im-
portant to those residents who
are swayed by money signs in
supposed tax revenue.
Regarding the vacancies at the
mall, perhaps the rents being
charged are too high?
We might just find that the
mall is not that much of an asset
to the township after all is said
and done! We might be better off
with the long-lost apple orchards
that used to grow on that side of
the highway.

Why should we have to
save the mall?

What a travesty of good and
upright government to allow this
political chicanery different
wording to take place.
Cant you just see the triumvi-
rate and their co-conspirators
laughing and rubbing their hands
together in glee when someone
came up with this gimmick
phrase to circumvent the five-
year time span required for the
reintroduction of the liquor refer-
endum question?
Wake up, Moorestown this is
just the beginning of the damage
these councilmen will inflict until
they can be voted out of office.
The morality of liquor is not the
question here.
Its the morality of the people
with the power.
There is no way to restrict the
sale of alcohol to the mall any-
way, despite what the unknowing
are led to believe. And although
the mall may be Moorestowns
biggest taxpayer, its impact is less
than 2 percent of the total rata-
bles. People moved to
Moorestown because it is a nice
place to live. If they dont like it
here the way it is, let them go else-
where. Just vote No to liquor li-
censes in Moorestown.

I really think it is interesting
how PREIT is trying to save their
investment in the Moorestown
mall by appealing to Moorestown
residents with the mailing of a
letter to support the sale of alco-
hol at the mall.
They want to build some high-
end restaurants that will be able
to sell liquor. Phone calls for sup-
port are also being made.
They promise they will build
a state-of-the-art 12 screen movie
theater for an attractive dining
and entertainment destination in
Moorestown.
The sale of six or eight liquor
licenses will generate $4 million
of revenue for the town, up front,
and $500,000 every year, there-
after, to help reduce property
taxes and improve local services.
What local services do they
mean? Will we need more police
officers? We just hired some part-
time ones for $20 an hour.
There are two referendums.
If we vote to pass the first one
to allow the sale of alcohol in
Moorestown, but we dont pass
the second one, that would re-
strict the sale of alcohol to restau-
rants at the mall only and
would prohibit liquor licenses in
other parts of town, for any pur-
pose, then we could conceivably
have a bar on Main Street. Ac-
cording to PREITs letter, these
restrictions could be renewed via
townwide referendum every
three years.
This is all supposition on
PREITs part. How do we know,
with todays economy, they will be
able to sell six or eight liquor li-
censes to generate the $4 million
income they are promising?
We have good restaurants 10
minutes away and right next-
door. Movie theaters are not gen-
erating the kind of income they
used to with people watching
movies at home.
There is also a large movie the-
ater 10 minutes away. How can
PREIT afford to build a new
state-of-the-art movie theater if
they are loosing money at the
mall?
Do we still care about the
restaurants on Main Street that
we have enticed to come here?
How will they feel about the com-
petition from new restaurants at
the mall(does this mean inside
or outside) where alcohol can be
served? Some have already said
they would like to be able to serve
alcohol. Some others have said
no they dont want it in
Moorestown.
Before you vote, get all of the
facts and think about what kind
of a town you want for the future.
If the sale of alcohol is approved
at the mall, then when will the
next time come that we vote for
the sale of alcohol on Main Street
or Chester Avenue?
One thing leads to another and
there is no real proof here that
liquor wont eventually creep
onto Main Street, as some already
would like.
I think we have been lead down
the wrong path by PREIT with
promises that have no proof of
succeeding in todays economy in
order to save their investment.
Plus, $500,000 is a drop in the
bucket for relief on our taxes.
Unfortunately, there will be
pressure put on the residents by
PREIT, and others, to vote yes
for this referendum in November.

Do we really need alcohol at the
mall, or on Main Street, to help
with such a small amount
($500,000) of tax relief ?
Is it really worth changing the
family atmosphere of our town,
which was named the best town
to live in by Money magazine,
and this was without the sale of
liquor at the mall or on Main
Street?
Is it our responsibility to save
the mall for PREIT?

Litterbugs in
Moorestown
Ive lived in Moorestown for 46
years and the town has changed
very much.
Take a walk in the evening
around 7 p.m. Note how much lit-
ter you see on the streets.
Next morning, walk the same
streets you walked the evening
before and note the trash thrown
overnight.
Have a trash bag with you and
gloves.
Where are these trash litter-
bugs from? Here in town?
This town wasnt like this 46
years ago.
I can name many changes.
By the way, does anyone re-
member the exact date
Moorestown became a dry
town? Surprise!

Long and Fosters Moorestown
Sales office was the sales leader
in several categories in the New
Jersey/Delaware region for the
month of July.
The Moorestown office fin-
ished No. 1 in the region in sales
volume and units sold, said
Terry Spahr, regional manager of
Long & Foster. In addition, their
sales volume was up six percent
versus July of 2010. They really
are red hot right now.
According to Manager Denise
Jasinski, During July, our aver-
age sale price also increased 12
percent from July of last year.
With such a wide variety of
homes to choose from at this
time, it really is a great time to
buy and sell, added Jasinski.
Long & Fosters new technolo-
gies and marketing enable our
agents to help their clients on an
even higher level. We just
launched our new Curbside
Shopper program, which gives
our buyers instant access to prop-
erty information via text message
from their cell phones or smart
phones. With one simple code and
using GPS technology, Curbside
Shopper gives buyers MLS infor-
mation on a property right when
they want it.
The Moorestown office also has
a satellite location in Medford
where they are available seven
days a week to serve the real es-
tate needs of the public.
With rates still very low, we
encourage anybody thinking of
buying or refinancing to call us
and get pre-qualified for a mort-
gage. Our in-house mortgage loan
officer has a wide array of financ-
ing products available to our
agents and their clients so they
can make their real estate dreams
happen, Jasinski said.

Joseph Thomas, a Moorestown
Township resident, will interpret
disease and self through avant-
garde Japanese dance.
Thomas first encountered
Butoh during an acting class ex-
ercise at the California Institute
of the Arts, in which students
were asked to move from one side
of a room to another within the
span of a single hour using the
entire hour.
At the time, the exercise
seemed pretty meaningless. It
was just a task to complete. But a
year later, I finally realized that
the point wasnt to get to the other
wall, but to experience the jour-
ney between the two walls,
Thomas, a Moorestown High
School graduate, said.
Butoh, a Japanese avant-garde
form of movement, appeared
after the Second World War as a
counter-statement to the contem-
porary Japanese dance scene,
which Butoh practitioners saw as
overly imitative of Western and
traditional dance. Butoh is often
characterized by slow, deliberate
and irregular contortions of the
body, performed in full-body
white make-up. The effect is both
eerie and compelling.
Thomas 35-minute program
called White Light is comprised
of two pieces. One, entitled
David, was inspired by
Thomas brothers battle with
Evans syndrome, a rare autoim-
mune disorder in which the im-
mune system attacks the bodys
own blood cells.
Ive always felt as though Ive
lived a pain-free existence in com-
parison to my brother. I asked
him to describe his experience
with Evans syndrome in an e-
mail, and now Im taking what
hes written and attempting to
embody it through Butoh so
that I can experience his pain and
embarrassment, too.
The disease is idiosyncratic.
The cause is unknown, and it
may be that the cause differs de-
pending on the individual.
The other piece in White
Light will be fully improvised to
a soundscape composed by
Michael Pisaro, chair in music
composition at the Herb Alpert
School of Music at CalArts. It will
explore themes of consciousness
and selfhood.
White Light will run for nine
performances at the 954 Dance
Movement Collective, from Fri-
day, Sept. 2 to Saturday, Sept. 17,
as part of the Philly Fringe Festi-
val. Tickets are $8. For more in-
formation or to purchase tickets,

By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
For the second time in about a
month, the Moorestown Town-
ship solicitor rejected a petition
to have a referendum question on
Novembers general election bal-
lot that would have asked the gov-
erning body to clarify the defini-
tion of recreation in its open
space trust fund.
Representatives from Save the
Environment of Moorestown,
Moorestown Save Open Space,
and Concerned Moorestonians
presented the township with a pe-
tition of nearly 1,500 signatures
from township residents who are
protesting the expenditure of
money from the Open Space,
Recreation, Farmland and His-
toric Preservation Trust Fund.
The township spent nearly
$217,000 from the fund on engi-
neering, design and bidding ex-
penses for phase one of the
K.I.D.S. initiative.
The petitioners were looking to
limit the way the Moorestown
Township Council could spend
the Open Space, Recreation,
Farmland and Historic Preserva-
tion Trust Fund, namely restrict-
ing the group from spending the
funds on active recreation.
However, the Moorestown
Township solicitor first rejected
the petition because it had sever-
al deficiencies, which made it
unacceptable. Representatives
changed several facets of the peti-
tion, including rewriting the ref-
erendum question, but it was
again rejected for a second time
last week.
Township Clerk Patricia Hunt
said the solicitor stuck with his
original ruling and said that the
proposed amendment to the open
space funding was not a permit-
ted amendment.
Also, the solicitor said the ref-
erendum question could not be
rewritten without getting new
signatures.
Throughout the process, Mayor
John Button has contended that
the use of the money from the
fund has been a perfectly legal
and acceptable use.
The Moorestown Open Space,
Recreation, Farmland and His-
toric Preservation Trust Fund
was created via referendum. It
contains money collected
through a one-cent open space tax
per $100 of assessed home value.
Betsy Schnorr, president of
STEM, previously said her group
has contended that the original
intent of the fund was not to be
spent on active recreation. About
1,500 residents in town agree, she
said.

traps in Moorestown and Wash-
ington Township on Thursday,
Aug. 18, from 7 to 11 p.m. Pesticide
was applied in a mist form by
truck.
Treatment took place in the
vicinity of the Hess Farm in
Moorestown on Lenola Road, and
near Mile Marker 16 on County
Route 542 (between Turtle Creek
Road and River Road) in Washing-
ton Township. No treatment is
planned for Maple Shade, since
the positive sample occurred near
the sewerage treatment plant,
where spraying recently took
place.
The division has now reported
a total 15 positive West Nile sam-
ples since the end of July.
