ESA to Shoot Down Dangerous Asteroid

The movie Armageddon showed Hollywood megastar Bruce Willis rocketing into space to help save the Earth from an impending doomsday collision with an approaching asteroid. If the European Space Agency (ESA) has its way, in 2015 they will seek to do the same thing, only this time its for real. European scientists have targeted an asteroid named 99942 Apophis, which has a small chance of impacting the Earth by the year 2036 if its present course continues. This is where this planned experiment is aimed. The ESA plans to launch a 500 pound satellite named Hidalgo, which is designed to smash into the asteroid and divert it off its present trajectory. Containing no explosives, the experiment is designed to test a method of impacting an oncoming asteroid, instead of blowing it up with a nuclear warhead, which could create thousands of asteroid fragments, as well as pollute space. While there are no known asteroids or other large bodies now heading towards Earth on a certain collision path, it would be folly to assume that such a possibility can never happen. Scientists have now proven that what wiped out the dinosaurs millions of years ago was indeed an asteroid, which impacted in the area of Central America where Lake Titicaca exists. If one looks at a map which shows the ocean floors terrain, theres a peculiar looking moon crater type shape which is clearly visible. This is where the impact point of the asteroid hit which wiped out most life on this planet, yet ironically paved the way for mammals such as human beings to prosper, at the expense of the dinosaurs.

If the ESAs mission proves to be successful, it will lead to the development of bigger asteroid killer satellites which will be stockpiled and readily handy should the need ever arise. Ironically, the United States is not participating in this mission. NASA has all but been grounded under the Obama administration, who last month ended even the space shuttle. Now, if America wants to send anyone into space, it has to hire other countries such as Russia to do the heavy lifting. The ESA is moving forward with their mission, without American help, because they understand the vital need to protect Earth from the impact of asteroids and large meteors. US has the most sophisticated deep space radar network which monitors all incoming objects from the distance of the Moon to Earth, it lacks capable interceptors to destroy the path of any large, incoming bodies. 1.0v1 Aug 12, 2011 Kal K.
