Invention Of Ice Cream
By : Sumona Das Posted on : 04 May, 2006

Did anyone invent ice cream? Clearly it was not one person who created this gift to humanity, for surely he or she would have already been awarded the Nobel Prize. Short of world peace and cures for terrible diseases, what better mark of progress and civilization could there be than the advent of ice cream in general and, if I may say so, chocolate ice cream in particular? Ice cream debuted in China 4000 years ago among the nobility in the form of a milk and rice concoction packed in snow. Fruit ices and a form of sherbet followed. In the Middle Ages travelers brought these treats back to Italy, where it was still a dessert reserved for the upper crust. Improved cheaper refrigeration techniques in the 16th century brought ice cream to the masses, probably the most important dot on the timeline of history until the discovery of antibiotics 400 years later.

Did You Ever Wonder
By : Sumona Das Posted on : 04 May, 2006

Previous | Next
Total Views : 1018

Did you ever wonder where some of the old hackneyed came from? Here are some facts about Europe in the 1500s: Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the custom today of carrying a

bouquet when getting married. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children-last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water." England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a "bone-house" and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the "graveyard shift") to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be "saved by the bell" or was considered a "dead ringer." And that's the truth... Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake." Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence, the saying "It's raining cats and dogs." There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house, which posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence. The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying "dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a "thresh hold." In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving

leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes the stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, "Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old." Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man "could bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat." Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or "upper crust."

After you die, your body starts to dry out creating the illusion that your hair and nails are still growing after death. Hair is made from the same substance as fingernails. The average surface of the human intestine is 656 square feet (200 m). A healthy adult can draw in about 200 to 300 cubic inches (3.3 to 4.9 liters) of air at a single breath, but at rest only about 5% of this volume is used. The surface of the human skin is 6.5 square feet (2m). 15 million blood cells are destroyed in the human body every second. The pancreas produces Insulin. The most sensitive cluster of nerves is at the base of the spine. The human body is comprised of 80% water. The average human will shed 40 pounds of skin in a lifetime. Every year about 98% of the atoms in your body are replaced. The human heart creates enough pressure to squirt blood 30 feet (9 m). You were born with 300 bones. When you get to be an adult, you have 206. Every human spent about half an hour as a single cell. There are 45 miles (72 km) of nerves in the skin of a human being. The average human heart will beat 3,000 million times in its lifetime and pump 48 million gallons of blood. Each square inch (2.5 cm) of human skin consists of 20 feet (6 m) of blood vessels. During a 24-hour period, the average human will breathe 23,040 times. Human blood travels 60,000 miles (96,540 km) per day on its journey through the body

Falling Trees
By : deepak verma Posted on : 29 Sep, 2005

In the Solomon Islands in the south Pacific some villagers practice a unique form of logging. If a tree is too large to be felled with an axe, the natives cut it down by yelling at it. (Can't lay my hands on the article, but I swear I read it.) Woodsmen with special powers creep up on a tree just at dawn and suddenly scream at it at the top

of their lungs. They continue this for thirty days. The tree dies and falls over. The theory is that the hollering kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works. Ah, those poor nave innocents. Such quaintly charming habits of the jungle. Screaming at trees, indeed. How primitive. Too bad thay don't have the advantages of modern technology and the scientific mind. Me? I yell at my wife. And yell at the telephone and the lawn mower. And yell at the TV and the newspaper and my children. I've been known to shake my fist and yell at the sky at times. Man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a stepladder for most of an afternoon. We modern, urban, educated folks yell at traffic and umpires and bills and banks and machines--especially machines. Machines and relatives get most of the yelling. Don't know what good it does. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking doesn't always help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.

We almost heard that ancient ends antiquity bestow us various wonders which are excessive lucrative and auxiliary for life. Here are few marvelous miracle which show the yielding power of nature. Basically, we have heard about the Bermuda Triangle but the scientist are unable to find out the hiding enchantments moving forces of the triangle. Now, I am going to tell you few exciting wonders similar to that miracle of sea. In 1930, the Niviarsiaq region of America originates an immense lake. Where the water is too icy cold and the taste as sweet as honey. Here, the peoples try to drink more than glass of water but they cant. Presently the scientists have failed to discover the hideous mystery of this lake. Then in the intermediate edge of Chile country and Argentina where large stream of water flows, named Rio Grande. Here the taste of the water is too quainter sour. Even the taste of the lemon is too low pungent than this river. For the enjoyments, most of the tourist, scientist and the citizens of this country uses salt and sugar in the river water and make an equivalent drink for their satisfaction. What a great miracle! Without paying pelf the people get and make excellent punch for their pleasure. On the other side named Agareneiaki situated in East Africa. Where the taste of the river water is as exotic as beer. Usually, the people are accustomed to take advantage and use the water for their drink purposes, because, its taste like beer. And the strange thing is that Agareneiaki is found to be zero percent of alcohol. Not harmful for health. Then in the 19th century, scientists discovered a lake in the country of Algeria where

the water of the river basically is used for the ink purposes. In this river, the water is as dark as blacken blue. And the scientists found the exact reason for this blacken fluid. They said in this region, due to the excess of iron and lead oxide in the river water can make quite excellent chemical for ink purpose. With lot a heard about this marvelous lake. Now, the next miracle is, in the island of Belgian situated a lake let named Hornoye. Here, the amazing ground is that, the lake hates male to bath there and thats why its passing currents when, if any of males get ready to bath there. On the other side, if females supposed to bath in the lake then it produces an insane magic where the inner core of the female create a sensational power. Then the next astounding miracle is in the Ireland where we found an amazing river. Here, if any of items dropped into the river it becomes as hard as stone. Presently the scientist are unable to find out the exact reason for that. Lastly, we heard that humans are versatile and change their color frequently. But heres the awesome river which was not found earlier in the Australia. Here the water change it's color with the monsoon arising. Wow! Simply great, cant imagine na.... See in the month of November and December the color of the river becomes dark blue. Then in the month of June it becomes green and in the August and September it becomes as white as milk. But the colors never ever affected negatively in the base of the river.
