HABAKKUK LESSON #8 AND LESSON #9 WOE TO THE PROUD AND GREEDY WOE TO THE DRUNKARD WORLD CIVILIZATION STUDY,

LADY SHABUD AND THE MURDER OF SERVANTS AND MUSICIANS SO THEY WOULD SERVE HER IN THE AFTER LIFE. CHILDREN BEING BORN WITH DOWN SYNDROME IN UKRAINE HAVE A BLEAK HOPE OF SURVIVAL IN ORPHANAGES AN ASTOUNDING 95 PERCENT WILL DIE. IN AMERICA CHILDREN CONCEIVED WHO ARE PERCEIVED TO HAVE BIRTH DEFECT ARE ABORTED AT ALARMING RATES, ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF CHILDREN DIAGNOSED WITH D.S. ARE ABORTED. HUMAN TRAFFICING IS GROWING IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES AS WELL AS OUR OWN. PEDIAFILES HAVE MORE AND MORE WAYS OF BEING IN CONTACT WITH CHILDREN TO AFFLICT HARM TO CHILDREN THROUGH MULTIPLE MEDIA OPTIONS. TALK SHOWS BASH ON THE INSTITUTION OF MARRIAGE AND ENCOURAGE PRINCIPLES AND IDEAS WHICH DO NOT PROMOTE GODLINESS (ALL TARGETED TOWARDS WOMEN WHO ARE AT HOME DURING THE DAY). ARROGANCE GROWS WITHIN OUR COUNTRY EVEN AS WE SPEAK 1. What things are your eyes and ears exposed to either through personal observation or through exposure to the media that cause you pain or sorrow? Where is God? ABORTION, MARRIAGES BREAKING UP, PEOPLE FORSAKING GOD THE BOOKS TITLE IS LORD, WHERE ARE YOU WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN? WE MUST KNOW THAT HE IS THERE AND THAT HE IS GOING TO DEAL OUT RETRIBUTION TO THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW HIM AND WORSHIP HIM. EVERY MAN AND WOMAN WILL BOW BEFORE THEIR MAKER WHETHER THEY BELIEVE THEY HAD A MAKER OR NOT. WE HAVE SPENT MUCH TIME ON LOOKING AT: HABAKKUK/OUR RESPONSE TO PROBLEMS: CRYING OUT TO GOD ADMITTING OUR SIN TO GOD REMEMBERING WHO GOD IS UNDERSTANDING THERE IS A PURPOSE IN IT ALL KNOWING THAT GOD IS ON HIS THRONE AT ALL TIMES THE JUST WILL LIVE BY FAITH NOW WE ARE GOING TO MOVE INTO---HOW GOD DEALS WITH THE PROBLEM (THE CHALDEANS/THOSE WHO SIN AND SIN AGAINST US): BEHOLD FOR THE PROUD HIS SOUL IS NOT RIGHT WITHIN HIM HE IS GOING TO TURN THEIR SINS BACK TO THEM GLORY WILL ULTIMATELY GO TO GOD AND NOT MAN SIN WILL NOT GO UNNOTICED OR UNACCOUNTED FOR

2. Look at the following woes that God delivers to the Chaldeans: WOES: USED TO INTRODUCE A JUDICIAL IDICTMENT OR A SENTENCE OF JUDGMENT. 2.(TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE POOR) STEALING 2:6) Woe to him that increases what is not _______HIS, for how long and to him who loads himself with many _____________PLEDGES? 2. (COVETING OTHERS THINGS FOR YOURSELF TO MAKE YOURSELF MORE SECURE) COVETING 2:9) Woe to him who covets ____________EVIL gain for his house, that he may raise his nest on high, that he might be delivered from the power of disaster! 2:10) you give shameful counsel to your house, cutting off many peoples, and sin against your soul. 3. (MURDER AND INJUSTICE TO THE POINT OF WEARYING THEMSELVES) MURDER/INJUSTICE 2:12) Woe to him who builds a town with bloodshed, who establishes a city with iniquity! 2:13) Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts that the people feed the fire, and nations weary themselves in vain? 4. (TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OTHERS TO THE POINT OF PHYSICAL PERVERSION) DEBAUCHERY, LEWDNESS, FORNICATION? ADULTERY 2:15) Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbor, pressing him to your bottle, even to make him drunk, that you may look on his nakedness! 2:16) You are filled with shame instead of glory. You also drink! And be exposed as uncircumcised! 5. (ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE GOD FROM HIS PLACE AND MAKE GODS OF THEIR OWN FASHION) IDOLATRY 2:19) Woe to him who says to __________WOOD, Awake! To silent stone, Arise! It shall teach! A PREVIOUS DESCRIPTION OF WHAT THE CHALDEANS WERE LIKE: 3. To see a vivid picture of what the Chaldeans were doing to those around them read Hab. 1:6-11, give a synopsis of the passage. Be graphic and specific to help implant the impression in your mind. 1:6) POSSESS DWELLING PLACES WHICH ARE NOT THEIRS

1:7) TERRIBLE AND DREADFUL 1:7) JUDGMENT AND DIGNITY DERIVE FROM THEMSELVES 1:8) THEY CHARGE AND HASTEN 1:9) THEY COME FOR VIOLENCE 1:9) TAKE CAPTIVES LIKE SAND 1:10) THEY SCOFF AT KINGS 1:10) THEY DERIDE EVERY STRONGHOLD 1:10) THEY HEAP UP EARTHEN MOUNDS AND SEIZE IT 1:11) THEN HIS MIND CHANGES, AND HE TRANSGRESSES 1:11) HE COMMITS OFFENSE, ASCRIBING POWER TO HIS GOD PARALLELS WITH HISTORICAL EVENTS/PEOPLES WITH THE CHALDEANS? 4. Does the description of the Chaldeans remind you of any people group or time in history? Explain why? How do you see judgment and dignity being derived from ourselves and the worship of other Gods? I PARTICULARLY SEE AMERICANS MOVING MORE AND MORE AWAY FROM THE TRUTH OF GOD'S WORD AND REPLACING IT MAN'S THOUGHTS AND WAYS. WE HAVE LOST OUR DESIRE TO SEEK GOD' S TRUTH AND HAVE LOOKED TO OURSELVES TO FORM TRUTH. IT IS NOT THUS SAYS THE LORD..., BUT I THINK THIS MEANS THIS ..... AND OF COURSE MY WAY IS RIGHT AND DO NOT SAY IT IS NOT. WE ONCE BELIEVED MARRIAGE WAS SACRED, BUT NOW THINK WELL IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER. WE ONCE BELIEVED THAT GOD WAS THE ONE WHOM WE TRUSTED IN, BUT NOW IT IS OUR LEADER, BANK ACCOUNT, PSYCHOLOGIST, MEDICINE, RELATIONSHIPS , EDUCATION,ETC. WE GIVE CREDIT TO OUR SUCCESS IN OUR NATION TO OUR EDUCATIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS, TO OUR WISE BUSINESS DEALS, TO OUR INTELLIGENCE, OUR TOLERANCE, OUR ACCEPTANCE, THE LIST GOES ON. WE HAVE CREATED SO MANY IDOLS FOR OURSELVES IT IS NOT EVEN FUNNY. WE CONTINUALLY TRY TO MAKE OURSELVES SECURE IN OUR THINGS, ACCOUNTS, ETC. MOTIVES OF THE WICKED 5. Can you see the motives the proud have in the above passages? Pro. 4:22 MOTIVATIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1) 2:6 TO INCREASE WHAT IS NOT HIS 2) 2:9 TO SET HOUSE ON HIGH, 3) 2:12 TO ESTABLISH THEIR CITY, 4) 2:15 TO LOOK ON NEIGHBORS NAKEDNESS, 5) 2:19 TO MAKE A GOD OUT OF NOTHING INSTEAD OF WORSHIPPING THE TRUE GOD.

GREEDY, SELFISH, SELF SEEKING, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OTHERS, USE OTHERS, IDOLATORS,

6. Look at Exodus 20:1-17. Which of the commandments did the Chaldeans break? (Remember: this is who God chose to discipline Judah) GOD WAS TAKING SOMEONE CLEARLY MORE EVIL AND WICKED TO JUDGE HIS PEOPLE. THE CHALDEANS HAD NO RESPECT FOR GOD AND HIS WAYS. THEY SINNED NOT ONLY AGAINST THE PEOPLE, BUT AGAINST GOD AS WELL. 1) YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME 2) YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FOR YOURSELVES A CARVED IMAGE 7. We often look at the transgressions people commit and yet forget to look at the motives behind the heart of why people do what they do. How are you guilty of some of the same motivations as the Chaldeans (note: it may not be the same actions, but the motivations may be the same)? Do not take this question lightly, reflect on how you have impure motives behind the things that you do. God requires us to use the word of God to reveal the motives of our hearts. Read Heb. 4:12 FOR THE WORD OF GOD IS LIVING AND POWERFUL, and SHARPER THAN ANY TWO-EDGED SWORD, PIERCING EVEN TO THE DIVISION OF SOUL AND SPIRIT, AND OF JOINTS AND MARROW, AND IS THE DISCERNER OF THE THOUGHTS AND INTENTS OF THE HEART. You may not take money away from the poor or exact taxes out of people, but what do you do that would be taking from another? What do you covet that someone else has? How do you try to set yourself up high (aka. Protect yourself) and forsake God or others in the process? How do you take advantage of others to benefit yourself? How to you expose others or make them vulnerable? How do you create for yourselves idols instead of serving the living God?

8. We have studied the woes and now let's view at how God steps in and reveals their consequences.

1) 2:6 _______________CREDITORS will rise up suddenly? You will become their _____________BOOTY. THEIR SIN WILL RETURN UPON THEM . 2) 2:11 The stone will ____________CRY out from the wall, and the beam from the timbers will ______________________ANSWER it. WHAT THEY DID WILL TESTIFY AGAINST THEM. 3) 2:14 For the whole earth will be filled with the _______________KNOWLEDGE of the glory of the Lord, and as the waters cover the sea. THEIR GLORY WILL BE NOTHING, IT WILL ALL BE GOD'S. 4) 2:16 You are filled with _____________SHAME instead of glory. You also-drink! And be exposed as __________________UNCIRCUMCISED! The cup of the Lord's right hand will be turned __________________AGAINST you. And utter ________________SHAME will be upon your glory. THE SHAME THAT THEY CAUSED OTHERS WILL LEAD TO THEIR UTTER SHAME AND PROVE THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW GOD. 2:17 For the violence done to Lebanon will ______________COVER you, and the plunder of the beasts which made them afraid, because of men's blood THE SIN OF OVERTAKING THE LAND WILL BE ON THEIR RECORD. 5) 2:20 The Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep _________________SILENT before Him. THEIR MUTE IDOLS WILL BE TRUMPED BY THE SOVEREIGN ALL RULING GOD WHO SPEAKS AND DOES ACCORDING TO HIS PLAN.

9. We are now getting a glimpse into the bigger picture of God's ways with Judah and with those who do not know God. What do you learn about those who live in a state of sin? Can you see the justice and mercy of God? What encouragement do you find from knowing that God deals with those who sin against you? (2 Th. 1: 6-10) 2 Th. 1:6-10 SINCE IT IS A RIGHTEOUS THING WITH GOD TO REPAY THOSE WHO TROUBLE YOU, AND TO GIVE TO YOU WHO ARE TROUBLED REST WITH US WHEN THE LORD JESUS IS REVEALED FROM HEAVEN WITH HIS MIGHTY ANGELS, IN FLAMIN FIRE TAKING VENGENACE ON THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW GOD, AND ON THOSE WHO DO NOT OBEY THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. THESE SHALL BE PUNISHED WITH EVERLASTING DESTRUCTION from the PRESENCE OF THE LORD AND FROM THE GLORY OF HIS POWER, WHEN HE COMES, IN THAT DAY , TO BE GLORIFIED IN HIS SAINTS AND TO BE ADMIRED AMONG ALL THOSE WHO BELIEVE, BECAUSE OUR TESTIMONY AMONG YOU WAS BELIEVED. GAL. 5:19-21 NOW THE WORKS OF THE FLESH ARE EVIDENT, WHICH ARE ADULTERY, FORNICATION, UNCLEANESS, LEWDNESS, IDOLATRY, SORCERY, HATRED, CONTENTIONS, JEALOUSIES, OUTBURSTS OF WRATH, SELFISH AMBITIONS, DISSENSIONS, HERESIES, ENVY, MURDERS, DRUNKENESS, REVELERIES, AND THE LIKE; OF WHICH I TELL YOU BEFOREHAND, JUST AS I ALSO TOLD YOU I TIME PAST, THAT THOSE WHO PRACTICE SUCH THINGS WILL NOT

INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. I CO. 6:9-11 DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT THE UNRIGHTEOUS WILLNOT INHERIT THE THE KINGDOM OF GOD? DO NOT BE DECEIVED. NEITHER FORNICATORS, NOT IDOLATERS, NOR ADULTERERS, NOR HOMOSEXUALS, NOR SODOMITES, NOR THEIVES, NOR COVETOUS, NOR DRUNKARDS, NOR REVILERS, NOR EXTORTIONERS WILL INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. AND SUCH WERE SOME OF YOU, BUT YOU WERE WASHED, BUT YOU WERE SANCTIFIED, BUT YOU WERE JUSTIFIED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS and BY THE SPIRIT OF OUR GOD. 10. Why does knowing that God is just and that at time will come when He deals with the sins of man such an important thing to remember? 11. What did you learn through your study (personal study or in the classroom today) that was something you did not know or needed to be reminded of? Now, what are you going to do with the Word of God, will you obey or will you ignore it?
