Learning how government works

Manistee Catholic Central students attend Washington Workshops seminar
By KEN GRABOWSKI
AssociAte editor
MANISTEE Middle school students at Manistee Catholic Central have been making educational trips to Washington, D.C. through the Washington Workshops program every other year since 1989, but when a new opportunity for high school students presented itself to advisor Pete Solwold back in the spring, it was too good for him to pass up. Solwold was informed by officials from the Washington Workshops group that funding was available for several students to take part in an allexpenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the government focused program. It was an opportunity that Manistee Catholic Central seniors Alex Kowalkowski and Michael Drew felt was something they couldnt pass up. Although the program was similar in nature to what they had attended several years ago, this one was much more intense in terms of learning how government functions. Back in late May, the Washington Workshops group

I am tossing my hat in the ring HAVE A STORY IDEA? to become the next president
COMMUNITY CALENDAR
After watching the Sunday morning news shows this past weekend and their interviews with the socalled 2012 presidential candidates from both parties I decided it was time to toss my hat in the ring. That is right folks, I am officially announcing my candidacy for the office of the president as the Do Nothing Party candidate. Our platform is We plan to do nothing over the next four years and we will deliver. Can the other parties deliver on their campaign promises in the same manner? I think not. After listening to some of those other candidates, I have come to the conclusion that I am just as qualified (or unqualified if you will) to run as they are. All it takes is a lot of double talk, smiling and a bus tour across America (or in my case a Dodge Caliber road trip) and come January 2013 my new address will be 1600 Pennsylvannia Ave. Washington D.C. (the D.C. stands for Dont Care.) I figured now that I am running for president it would be best if reporter Ken Grabowski interviewed candidate Ken Grabowski on the issues. Reporter: I see that you want to be referred to like other candidates by past titles like Gov. Romney and Speaker Gingrich. What is the last elected office you held? Candidate: You can call me Mr. Vice President. Reporter: I dont recall you being vice president of this country.

Candidate: I wasnt. I was vice president of my fifth grade class at Washington Elementary School. Reporter: I see ... Why is your brochure on what your canididacy would bring to this country blank? Candidate: When is the last time you saw a president deliver on any of what they said during the campaign? I am a politician who delivers what he promised, and in this case, that is nothing. Reporter: The office of the presidency requires foreign policy experience. Do you have it? Candidate: If I stand on the roof of my house at night and look to the west I can sometimes see the lights of Wisconsin. Reporter: Wisconsin isnt a foreign country. Candidate: Have you seen what the Republicans have done to the unions and middle class in that state? That sure isnt America. Reporter: What do you feel would correct the lack of bi-partisan politics in Washington? Candidate: Dont re-elect any of the current legislators.

Reporter: What would you do to lower the high unemployment numbers? Candidate: Well, I could continue on the course that the Republicans and Democrats have set for us.That amounts to doing nothing until their benefits run out, so they go off the rolls, thus lowering the numbers. Reporter: What is your solution to reducing the deficit? Candidate: Good question, Ken. I have in-depth knowledge of the problem and have studied it closely and determined what we currently are doing isnt working. I plan to study the situation, evaluate the situation and get feedback from America. Because less is more and the American people deserve our best effort. Reporter: Huh? That is double talk and doesnt make sense. What is your plan for this country? Candidate: My plan is a comprehensive one that will focus on making America great again. Reporter: You are still not answering my questions or saying what you plan to do or how you will do it. You are not telling me anything useful that will help this country. Candidate: That is why I am just as qualified as all my opponents seeking the presidency, and I will remain that way until I... See you next Wednesday. Residents encouraged to stride toward healthier lifestyles at Manistee Labor Day Bridges Walk
As a part of the Get Michigan Moving program, the City of Manistee Non-Motorized Transportation Committee is organizing a Manistee Beach, Bridges and Riverwalk Community Labor Day Bridge Walk on Labor Day, Sept. 5 starting at 9 a.m. from Fifth Avenue Beach parking lot. Like the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk, the Manistee event is five miles long, with walkers having the option of taking shorter routes. Throughout Michigan communities are organizing Labor Day Community Walks in an effort to link communities together for health, fitness and active living and as an important step toward living healthier and more physically active lives. The walk will take participants across both bridges that span the Manistee River Channel, on the Riverwalk, and through downtown Manistee on River Street. By holding local events all across the state, we hope to double or even triple the number of walkers on Labor Day and bring attention to the importance of physical activity for the health of Michigan, said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Michigan Fitness Foundation. She added that a physically active Michigan is a healthier Michigan as her organization works to encourage residents to take advantage of opportunities to enjoy Michigans beautiful parks, trails and lakes while hiking, biking and swimming their way to fitness and health. WASHINGTON: From Page 1

City Central. That led to one of their teachers saying they would like to try it out, but they had never heard of the program, said Solwold. I talked to them about my program, but no one said they could do it like we do with the fundraising. Tom said money was available now, so I said I can find two or three kids to go and then several came from Traverse City. I said we are in if you can pay for it, because we didnt have the money for it in our funds. Kowalkowski said the Traverse City teacher contacted him and Drew directly. She had six students from Traverse City Central and West high schools that were interested in going. They said the Washington Workshops group was very accommodating. We had a very early flight, so they even paid for a room for us and our parents the night before the flight, said Kowalkowski. The program is more demanding than the middle school one. It required that those attending do more research and actually write a law. Both Kowalkowski and Drew said they found the experience to be a very educational one. We went and visited with Rep. Bill Huizenga (R, Zeeland) and sat in on one of his committee meetings which was really neat, said Kowalkowski. What was also nice was you see big name people like Michele Bachmann and others walk by. Drew pointed out that another highlight was visiting the Coast Guard facilities. We saw some great technology there and it was really cool, said Drew. Another thing they did was to separate into three different committees to discuss various hot topic issues. Drew was on the energy efficiency committee and Kowalkowski served on one for gun control. Each committee had to take a side on it, and Michael talked on his for quite a while, said Kowalkowski. Drew agreed that he enjoyed it, and said they made good progress on his bill. Ours passed, but we had to add a few amendments to it, said Drew. Kowalkowski said the 60-plus students that were there from Florida and Michigan voted on the bill. They said that was an interesting concept in seeing how legislation develops and moves on to become law. It is really interesting for them to see how a law is made, said Solwold. That experience is much more than any sight seeing that takes place while they are in Washington, D.C. Both Drew and Kowalkowski said the concept of serving an internship with the Washington Workshops is something they would be interested in pursuing down the road. They said both the middle and high school experiences have been good ones. However, the two Manistee Catholic Central seniors agreed that at this point in time they arent looking at politics as a future source of employment. Both were in agreement in their line of thinking in regard to that matter. I considered it before and it is interesting, but I dont think I would want to make a career out of it, said Kowalkowski. Drew also pointed out that they had a lobbyist come talk to them about what they do in Washington. It proved to be an interesting concept to the world of politics and the way things operate in Washington, D.C. He was lobbying for agriculture issues, said Drew. The two students said another activity they took part in was a debate that was set up by a professor from George Mason University. They were broken up into groups with each being assigned one of the memorials in Washington, D.C. We had to argue why our memorial shouldnt be eliminated, said Kowalkowski. Both agreed that the entire experience was a great one and something they would recommend to anyone.

asked if we were interested in getting more involved in the high school level, said Solwold. The only time we had our high school program with them in the past was we would fund two seniors or upper-class members to go to the inaugural week presidential ceremonies. (Washington Workshops) Tom Cross called and told me that he had the opportunity to get scholarship money for an advanced six-day program at the high school level. They have wanted to get more of a high school program going. It is something they hope to keep going if the funds are available. What they would like to do is get a couple representatives from each state, and they feel that is something they could handle. Solwold said for years he has tried to get other school districts interested in the program, but because most of them had so many things already taking place they just couldnt get the funding together for it. This time he tried talking to someone at Traverse
