VACATION WEEK

Alexanders Pizza of Eagle River brings tradition to your table

More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods for summer jobs. They came from a strong Italian community in Chicago where pizza was the staple at home and at college. Since there were no pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed, and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down at them jaundice-eyed and called them brash boys from Chitown. But now the pizzeria has become a landmark. Today, customers come from all over the country to try the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexanders on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexanders a thumbs up. Even though the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same the traditional method of making pizza at Alexanders. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the best, which is stressed by the owners. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9-month-aged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce that is made from tomato puree from pear tomatoes the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexanders offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and, finally, lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, Si mangia sempre bene! (one always eats well!). Employees at Alexanders Pizza have come from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange-student employees from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexanders Pizza. Alexanders success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and triple raised and the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is in every bite of crust as well. Although the brothers have experimented with high-tech, cost- and labor-saving methods, the pizza-making method at Alexanders remains traditional. At Alexanders, the pizza is cooked on a 150-pound stone deck. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and a choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. To entertain diners of all ages, Alexanders has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball machines, video games and several pool and foosball tables. Its a great place to host birthday parties for all ages. Alexanders Pizza, housed in a turn-of-thecentury remodeled building, is located in downtown Eagle River on Rail-

Lake Forest offers challenging nine-hole public golf course

Lake Forest Golf Club has a rich tradition of providing challenging holes, friendly service and knowledgeable golf pros to vacationers and local residents. The beautiful North Woods scenery of the historical course makes Lake Forest Golf Club a wonderful place to enhance your summer fun. You can come by land or by sea, golf pro Rick Pepper Freund said, referring to the courses location on the Chain of Lakes. The course can be accessed by boat on the channel between Voyageur and Eagle lakes. Guests are welcome to stop by for a game of golf or enjoy food and drinks at the clubhouse. The romantic history of golf at Lake Forest dates back more than 75 years. In 1917, a small group of wealthy regulars selected a wooded and hilly farm site with frontage on two lakes and established what was called Eagle Waters Golf Club. They carved a nine-hole golf course from the wooded hills and built a clubhouse. Eagle Waters Golf Club was private and catered to the elite group of cottage owners in the Everett Colony between Catfish and Cranberry lakes. Through the years, the golf club has entertained the rich and famous. On some days, as many as 100 caddies served the club. While the rest of the country struggled through the Great Depression, the driveways of local estates sported Fleetwoods, Rolls Royces and Cords. Many famous golfers played the course Walter Hogan, Ollie Meyers and Jos Hurado, the South American golf champion. In the 1950s, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his brother, Milton, also were frequent visitors. When Jim Mason purchased Eagle Waters Golf Club in 1963, he built the

Cranberry marsh and winery tours will be offered starting Thursday, Sept. 29, at 11 and 11:30 a.m., leaving from the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center. Pumpkin Fest planned Oct. 8 in Three Lakes

The Three Lakes Fire Department Auxiliary will sponsor its 19th annual Pumpkin Fest Saturday, Oct. 8, at Three Lakes High School from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fest will feature arts and crafts, a bakery table, lunch and homemade specialty foods, including soups. Cindy Starke of the auxiliary said there will be about 100 craft exhibits in the large and small gymnasiums and hallway. Besides the indoor crafts show, a farmers market will be set up outside the school. Pumpkin will be the featured food, according to Starke. There will be pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin cookies and pumpkin soup, she said. The featured soup recipes are taken from the Three Lakes Fire Department Auxiliary cookbooks, Kettle Creations, Volume I and Volume II. The cookbooks are on sale at Three Lakes businesses and will be available at Pumpkin Fest. In addition, appetizer and pumpkin recipe books will be available. The popular Sallys homemade cinnamon rolls will be back this year. Fresh cranberries will be for sale. There will be some bakery available with Splenda- brand sweetener, as well as sugarfree items. Every year, we order 500 caramel apples, and they always sell, said Starke. Long-sleeve Tshirts, sweatshirts and denim shirts with the new Pumpkin Fest logo will be available. Due to the success of Pumpkin Fest, the auxiliary is able to support the fire department. In the past, the auxiliary also has donated to the food pantry, assisted needy families in the community, presented scholarships, purchased two buoys for the Chain of Lakes and purchased a bench for the town beautification committee that was placed in the downtown area. While there is no admission fee for Pumpkin Fest, visitors are asked to donate a nonperishable food item for Three Lakes Christian Food Pantry. For more information on Pumpkin Fest, call Starke at (715) 546-2042.

St. Germain: A premier destination

St. Germain serves visitors and area residents as a premier destination. One might even say the community is Home of the Authentic Northwoods Experience. St. Germain offers a host of natural resources, recreational opportunities, dining, lodging and shopping for all seasons. The areas dense forests are marked by trails of all types, making way for hikers, bikers, snowmobilers, skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts. Just north of town on Highway 155, the Fern Ridge Trail offers hikers a variety of wildflowers, trees and nonflowering plants, making the trail beautiful during all seasons. The trail is only three-quarters of a mile, but has lots of challenging terrain. Three hiking loops of varied length provide pleasure walking on the Awassa Nature Preserve and Hiking Trail on the west edge of St. Germain. In addition, a half-mile nature trail with a printed interpretive guide is accessible to all, including wheelchair users. For a safe and scenic bike ride, try out the 12 miles of paved trail along the St. Germain Bike and within the community. St. Germain also is home to the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame, where you can learn about the history of snowmobile development and racing. Many different snowmobiles from early models to championship sleds are on display. The year-round fishing on dozens of lakes in the St. Germain area is legendary. Vilas County is dotted with more than 1,300 lakes and plenty of streams and rivers. St. Germain offers fishing for everything from crappies to trophy muskies. Canoeing, kayaking and boating opportunities beckon visitors to St. Germains many lakes and streams, including the St. Germain River and the Wisconsin River. There are many activities that visitors can take part in while visiting St. Germain. The St. Germain Golf Club, rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest, is challenging and fun. The 18-hole public golf course boasts woods and water. There also are a variety of mini golf courses, go-cart tracks and horseback riding facilities close to town. When visitors are done enjoying the great outdoors, there are plenty of things to see and do in the St. Germain area. This includes a wide array of community events and festivals throughout the year. A flea market is held every Monday through Labor Day from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the community park. Bingo is also held every Monday at the community center from June through August. The 52nd annual Colorama will take place in St. Germain Community Park Sept. 17. A crafts show will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Auctions, farmers market, wine tasting and pumpkin painting are all activities to be held at the festival. A variety of great food is always available from the chamber of commerce. More information on St. Germains lodging, attractions, trails and events can be obtained at the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce, located at the corner of highways 70 and 155 in St. Germain. Look for the big muskie and the statue of Chief St. Germaine. The phone number is (715) 477-2205. Those interested in learning more also can email info@st-germain. com or visit the Web site at st-germain.com.

Northernaire condominium owners buy into common amenities, including an indoor pool, fitness center, both indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a massive lounge

area, walking trails, fire pits, a spa and 1,800 feet of frontage on Deer Lake with docking space on the Three Lakes Chain of Lakes.

Northernaire offers luxurious condos on 1,800 feet of frontage on Chain

Under new ownership, the Northernaire offers all the luxuries to let you enjoy an incredible vacation home at an affordable price not seen in years. It was purchased from M&I Bank after a foreclosure, allowing the new owner to offer the deal of a lifetime to the public. This caliber of discount on these luxurious condos will never be seen again. A one-bedroom unit with 971 square feet starts at $99,900, and a two-bedroom unit with 1,414 square feet starts at $179,900. The twobedroom includes a onecar attached garage. Every condo is fully furnished with beautiful upholstered furniture, lamps, dishes, linens, hideaway blinds and stainless-steel appliances. All cabinet tops in kitchens and bathrooms are of the finest granite. Wood floors add to the experience of up-north luxury. Every unit features a whirlpool jet tub, a large man-size ceramic shower and gas fireplace for that winter evening relaxation after snowmobiling. Every unit has a lake view with a southeast exposure, making the morning coffee on the deck or patio a memorable vacation experience. The new owner, an experienced investor, realized early on that to complete this memory-filled complex would mean a great deal to the business climate of this area. With experienced crews, he has completed the tennis, volleyball and basketball courts. Let the fun begin! In addition, he was able to get approval from the Department of Natural Resources to install two new sets of docks so that a condo owners can have their own dock for a season. This assures access to the great Chain of Lakes for each condo owner. This condominium complex is unique in many ways. First, it is built on the site of the old Northernaire Hotel, which was billed as the Waldorf of the North. Next, it merges two concepts hotel and condo. This lets an owner choose to have their unit in the rental pool or not. With all of the units being fully furnished, the tenant has only to take their groceries. For some owners who have only a few weeks of a vacation or want to go south for the winter, they can rent out their unit when not there. The hotel management takes care of reservations, cleaning and maintenance and splits the income with the owner on a 60/40 basis, with 60% going to the owner. The rental income will offset the cost of ownership. The complex is built on 63 acres, with room for expansion in future years. There is a 24-unit lodge approved and 42 lots for freestanding cottages. They would be a part of the Northernaire Condominium Association and have access to the huge outdoor hot tub, indoor swimming pool, exercise room, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts and docks. The 1,800 feet of frontage on Deer Lake gives plenty of space for everyone, however, the owner says that expansion will only occur as the market changes. The Northernaire is located on Highway 32 east of Three lakes. The sales office is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Appointments can be made by calling (715) 848-8009.

VACATION WEEK

For educational fun, games, puzzles, visit Grandmas Toy Box in Eagle River
Wow theres nothing like this where we live! This is frequently heard at Grandmas Toy Box in downtown Eagle River. Customers from all over the country are pleasantly surprised when entering this specialty toy store for the first time. Although the stores main purpose is to provide educational and quality toys and games for young children, adults almost always find something they like, too. Games and puzzles are great for those rainy summer days. Sand and water toys are summer features, of course, but when did you last see a bocce ball or croquet set? Add rubber horseshoes and beanbag toss and your summer fun has begun. Unique frisbees and flying toys also are popular, as well as water shooters. All this and much more can be found at Grandmas Toy Box. There are many games on display for people to try, theres a preschool play area with a train table and farm yard, and many novelty items, which are great fun to try out. Its difficult not to have a good time when youre winding a jack-inthe-box or looking through a kaleidoscope. One of the most interesting sections in Grandmas Toy Box is the rock department. We literally have thousands of rock and mineral specimens, said store owner Kathy Holperin. Rock hounds of all ages will be delighted to find popular items such as amethyst, geodes, agate slabs, quartz crystal, petrified wood and polished stones. But the true geologist also will find rare collectibles like rough opals, Michigan datolite, peridot, turquoise, Michigan copper and much, much more. For shoppers who cant get to the store, eaglerivertoys.com is now available. Many of the toys are offered online. Grandmas Toy Box opens at 9:30 a.m. seven days a week, year-round. More information can be obtained by calling Holperin at (715) 4772227.

Apple Harvest Craft Fest set

The Apple Harvest Craft and Gift Fest will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3-4, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days at the Vilas County Fairgrounds in Eagle River. Admission to the show will be free. The newest in craft and gift items for the fall and winter season will be the main attraction at the annual Apple Harvest Craft Fest. There will be more than 100 artists and crafters from across the country on hand displaying and selling their handcrafted works of art and gift items. There will be entertainment on the grounds. Food will include hamburgers, brats, hot dogs, french fries and cheese curds, along with apple pies, caramel apple chunks with ice cream and other apple delicacies. There will be picnic table seating. The fairgrounds are located on Highway 70 West in Eagle River. For more information, phone (715) 675-6201.

Eagle River takes pride in four-star rating

Eagle River Golf Course is famous for its course conditions, challenging layout and North Woods beauty. It is open to the public for everyone to play. When golfers play at Eagle River Golf Course, they often are playing on the best course conditions available in the North Woods. Many of our customers rave every year about the overall playing conditions they experience at our facility. We take pride in giving the golfers a playing surface that is consistent with our four-star rating we receive every year from Golf Digests Best Places to Play, said Brad Missling, the clubs PGA golf pro. Golf Digest has given Eagle River Golf Course a four-star rating 10 years in a row. The customers playing the course are the people responsible for the rating the course receives. This rating reflects the value and awesome experience of playing at the Eagle River Golf Course, said Missling. Eagle River Golf Course offers the most affordable rates of any four-star rated golf course in the North Woods. People can be assured they are getting a great value when they choose to play golf at Eagle River Golf Course. The practice area also represents what customers should expect from a course with a four-star rating. A new putting and chipping green was built a couple of years ago. This was a huge improvement for people to practice all parts of their short game. A practice greenside bunker was put in so that people can practice their greenside sand game as well. The driving range has three levels of teeing surface with target greens and yardage signs. Last year, a gold set of tees was added to the golf course. The course now offers four sets of tees to make the course enjoyable for all skill levels. The new gold tees have become very popular with senior golfers. The undulating greens and narrow fairways keep the course challenging. The course has many of its holes carved out of the mature trees which remind golfers why they love to come and golf in the North Woods area. The abundance of wildlife is another unique characteristic the course has that golfers enjoy. Many white-tailed deer make the course their home, red fox have been seen and every spring the mallards enjoy the water on the course. Trees, water hazards and rolling hills have made the course into one of the most popular courses in northern Wisconsin, Missling said. The amenities do not stop with the course. The clubhouse offers a friendly atmosphere to enjoy a drink, food or snack after a round of golf. Golf outings are welcome. The restaurant can seat more than 100 people, plus the outdoor patio is a very popular spot to relax after golf. The restaurant overlooks the scenic course. The pro shop offers top pro-line equipment Course can help find the exact clubs a golfer is looking for. Eagle River Golf Course has two certified professionals on staff, PGA professional Brad Missling and LPGA professional Margo Rogers Anderson. Both are trained, qualified instructors to help golfers improve all parts of their game. Individual lessons are offered and made by appointment; group clinics and golf schools also are offered. Pricing information for lessons and golf schools can be viewed on the course Website at eaglerivergolfcourse.com. Back again this year is the customer appreciation card. For every fullprice 18-hole round golfers purchase, they will receive a stamp on their card. Once the card has been stamped five times they receive a free round of golf with the rental of a golf cart. Tee times are taken 30 days in advance, if there are 12 or more players, advance booking options are available. Online tee times are available which allows golfers the ability to book their tee times anytime of the day from their computer at eaglerivergolfcourse.com. Eagle River Golf Course is located at 457 E. McKinley St. in Eagle River. For more information, call (715) 479-8111 or (800) 820-1477. Rate information, an interactive hole-by-hole tour and additional golf course information and photos are all available by viewing the Web site

from the best vendors in the equipment industry. Mens club lines for sale are from Callaway, Titleist, Cobra, Ping, Taylor Made, Adams and Cleveland. Club fitting is available to ensure the equipment purchased fits the golfers swing. The pro shop offers mens clothing lines from Cutter & Buck, Adidas, Sun Mountain, Under Armour, Gear and Nike. Ladies lines carried in the pro shop include Antigua, Adidas, Annika, Nike, Sun Mountain, Gear and Cutter & Buck. We carry a wider selection of ladies clothes than any other course in the area. If we dont have an item you want, in most cases, we can spe-

cial order it for you and have it shipped to your front door, said Missling. Mens and ladies golf shoe lines are from Adidas and Foot Joy. The course usually orders around 100 pairs of shoes to start the year, so the course offers a good size selection at a wide price range, which makes their shoe selection the best in the North Woods. The bottom line when it comes to equipment and apparel, is that if customers are looking for that new driver for more distance, a new putter that is well balanced, new irons for maximum forgiveness or the newest wedges with zip groove technology, the pro shop staff at Eagle River Golf

Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexanders Family Pizza was rated #1! Out of 11 restaurants mentioned Alexanders was ranked number 1, an independent was second, and a national chain was third, both far behind in customer choice. Alexanders was found to offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexanders has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients. Alexanders Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.
