HOW TO WIRE A PLUG

Tools required: T1.Pen knife T2.Pliers T3.Phillips/ cross head screw driver T4.Flat head screw driver T5.Marker T6.Wire Cutter Equipment required: 1. 3 pin Plug 2. fuse (if required) Objective: To wire a plug for an electrical appliance Background information: Generally electrical plugs in Singapore come with 3 wires. However some appliances will only have 2 wires- Live and Neutral. These appliances are double insulated and do not rely upon the earth wire for protection Brown/Red Blue/Black Yellow and green/green Live Neutral Earth

Proper installation of these wires is important and they must be installed in the correct location in the plug as well.

TIPS: A method for remembering the position of the wires: BLue- Bottom Left BRown- Bottom Right Additional information required: Rating of the electrical appliance- to ensure to correct fuse is used for the plug 1

Before starting:

Check that the wire for the appliance is in good working condition and there are no exposed wires, cuts, or loose terminations before installing the plug. Installing a plug and powering an appliance with damaged wiring is a safety hazard. Procedures: Remove the screws on the plug using a cross head screw driver (T3). Note that the top screw holds the plug together and the two lower screws hold the cord grip in place. Keep the crews as they will be reused later. Hold the wire up to the plug ensuring that the wire reaches the furthest end of the plug. Mark a line with a marker (T5) inside of the cord grip. ! NOTE: It is essential that the cord grip grips the outer insulation on the wire and not the inner insulation of the single wires. Using a pen knife (T1) carefully score the surface of the outer insulation, making sure that the inner insulation is not cut. ! NOTE: If the internal insulation is cut, proceed to cut the wire completely and start again. Grab the short end with a pair of pliers (T5) and remove the piece of insulation.

Marking

Hold the wire up to the plug and using a marker (T5) to mark the correct length for the wires and cut them to the correct length using a wire cutter (T6). ! NOTE: Take note of the positions of the various color coded wires

Markings

After cutting to the correct length, mark off 5mm from the end of the wires and remove the insulations using a pair of wire cutter (T6). ! NOTE: Exercise care not to cut of the internal wirings when stripping the insulations After removing the insulations, tightly twist the ends of the wires to prevent fraying. Feed the whole wire through the cord grip and Push each wire individually into the correct terminal and tighten the screws firmly using a flat head screw driver (T4). Ensure that no wires will be trapped when the top of the plug is replaced. ! NOTE: The cord grip screws must be tight to ensure the cord cannot be pulled out of the plug. Ensure that the correct fuse is fitted before proceeding! 3
