Preventing slide concerns Knights

AURORA Following an extremely encouraging4-1startlastfootballseason, South Dearborns Knights pulled a completereversalinthesecondhalf. Thats exactly the type of momentum swing fourth-year head coach Eric Lows (13-18)andcompanywouldliketoavoid asthe2011seasonopensFridaywiththe first of two meetings with longtime rival Lawrenceburg. It was the total opposite of the year before, when we won four of our last five, said Lows, a former Knights standout and Ball State captain. preseason roster. But injuries cleared the way for the track sprinter to blossom in the month of September, earning him allconference and county Newcomer of the Yearhonors. SDs core receivers are second to none in the area, in fact, with athletic wideouts CameronLouden(62,171,Sr.)andAdam Bailey(510,168,Jr.)peggedasthestarters,backedbyjuniorJacobCreemer(59, 167) and senior Charlie Wetzler (511, 146). Third-year senior Trent Luhrsen (62, 178), a second-year starter on both sides of the ball, will enter in doubletightendsets. Rugged fullbacks A.J. Hummel (510, 182), a junior, and Brad Bruner (60, 192),asophomore who boosted last years 5-2 reserve team, should provide the backfield blockingpunch. South Dearborns offensive line is packed with size, strength and starting experience. Massive AllEIAC senior guard Chase Rollins (61, 282) returns as a fourth-year starter with attitude - as do rangy tackles Steve Flanagan (66, 234) andTravisHensley(64,226),boththirdyearmen. Senior center Jon Case (61, 232) also is a third-year starter with aggressive tendencies.Whenherecoversfrompreseason illness, junior Dustin Conety (61, 194), who performed well as an injury sub last year, should compete for the other guard spotwithclassmatesDanielWaldon(59, 178)andDarrellWalker(59,198). Obviously,SDskeyoffensiveissuewill be at quarterback, where neither of smallish junior candidates Josh Faller (510, 164)orClayHensley(510,150)stepped forward significantly in the preseason. Bothareathletictypes, withFallerthebetterrunnerandHensleythepocketpasser. How well the Knights pro-style attack prosperswillhingeonthosetwoindividuals.AnddontbesurprisedifformerbackupQBLuhrsenseesspotduty, particularly inspecialformations. Trying to scheme against South Dearborns veteran defensive lineup is apt to give opponents plenty of headaches this fall. Knights 4-4 scheme allowed 188 rushing yards and 109 passing per game lastyear. The front line will be formidable, from thethree-manendrotationofrangy,physicalsecond-yearmanBenMay(64,227), along with the 66 Flanagan and 64 Hensley, to the down tackle platoon of juniorsTreyGrubbs(511,207)andEvan Hurr(60,255)withRollinsandCase. Linebacker is an area of SD strength, too, with Saunders moving inside to join senior Robert Schwarz (59 171), and the outside spots a split-time proposition between seniors Jamie Barron (510, 162)andJakeEmerson (59, 167), with Hummel and Bruner. And the Knights best athletes will share timeinthesecondary, with Bailey, Adams,Wetzlerand senior Robert Fitzpatrick (511, 178) at the corners. Louden, at safety, needs just two more picks to break Adam Klingelhoffersschoolrecordforcareer interceptions(10). Specialteamsshouldbesolidwith the return of senior kicker/punter Kyle Kelly and deadly return artists Adams, Louden and Bailey. Rollins and Conety repeataslong-snappers. Some newcomers who could add to the picture in include junior Austin Miller (60, 181), a two-year basketball starter listed merely as an athlete/linebacker, and juniorOT/DTTrentSchoster(510,213). Picking up Lawrenceburg in games one and eight this season, for the first time since the 1980s, has helped South Dearbornbalanceitsscheduleforthefirsttime in ages. No longer will long stretches of roadgameshampertheKnightsprogress. Another issue that hangs over the program is whether this will be Lows final season. The last Knight to be named an Indiana All-Star was promoted to elementary school principal last year, and could be requiredtogiveupcoaching. marks the bicentennial of an event that changed the course of history in North American and the world. In 1811, Nicholas Roosevelt did what many thought was impossible; he successfully guided a steamboat up and down the Ohio River and eventually to New Orleans, a major feat for the time. The Rivers Institute at Hanover College, the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati are proud to partner in an event hat will educate and celebrate this turning point in history. The communities from Madison, Louisville, and Cincinnati and the surrounding areas are invited to enjoy a cruise up and down the Ohio River, special charters and even a Steamboat Race in the town of Madison.
