London Indaba: Black student leaders meet to Share, Learn and Connect

The ACS Leadership Summit paves way for stronger, more effective black student leaders writes Marie Shabaya This year, the African Caribbean Society (ACS) network will grow from strength to strength with the 3rd annual ACS Leadership Summit. The summit features relevant workshops, engaging talks and invaluable opportunity to create peer and industry networks for attending delegates. This years summit is bigger than ever before with a record number of delegates attending to date. 100 delegates representing 43 UK University ACS are expected to attend. With keynote talks from accomplished leaders including Tottenham MP - David Lammy, Deutsche Bank, Director Ozioma Emeagi and Outsourcery CEO - Piers Linney. The summit also includes skills workshops from Google amongst others, with an emphasis on building entrepreneurial skills. Founder of the ACS Project, Hugo Obi, who has proactively developed links between the African Caribbean Society network and industry noted, This years summit programme has been created with a focus on empowering [delegates] to lead [their] local ACS communities more effectively. The student leaders attending have proved their worth by opening up opportunities for their members. Outgoing KCL (Kings College London) ACS president Mike Nosa- Ehima commented, Our goal is to cater for the social, educational, cultural and professional needs of our members. KCL ACS was recognised as the 2010/11 Society of the Year by Kings College Students Union. The Summit is endorsed by a number of high profile corporate brands such as Google, Deutsche Bank, Bank of England, legal firm Simmons & Simmons as well as Pearson. Founder Hugo Obi states, We are very appreciative of the brands that share our vision and demonstrate this through their continued partnership. Last years theme, Leadership in a new decade, echoes in this years program with both keynote speakers sharing with the student leaders their respective visions on effective leadership. Incoming Warwick ACS President - Sinead Banful captured this theme brilliantly in her statement; We will take Warwick ACS to the next level, and serve communities beyond our university. Illustrating that the student leaders, via the summit, are being given tools to lead beyond their local network.
